Why Is Health Testing Important

6 âTypesâ? Of Golden Retrievers You Didnât Know About

Unfortunately, not every breeder tests their dogs according to the Golden Retriever Club of America standards. At minimum, a golden retriever should be tested for Hips, Elbows, Eyes and Heart. It is equally as responsible, in our mind, to also test for additional genetic components, such as Hereditary blindness, skin conditions, etc. At Sleepy Morning Goldens, we know that it is our duty, not only as a responsible breeder, but to take the necessary steps to better the breed. If you purchase a puppy from a breeder that does not test all these categories, it could could end up costing you thousands of dollars, not including an unsurmountable amount of heart ache for family and pain for your dog.

The cost of surgery to fix Hip Dysplasia is around $4,500, and the cost of a total hip replacement can be upwards of $14,000. It is a red flag if a breeder were to say that some of their dogs were tested, and some that were not “because their parents passed,” or “we have never had a problem.” It is very likely that they failed the test, but are just not telling you, or the failed exam was not submitted to OFA for reporting, because they are heavily invested in the dog. Some may not even test for certain categories, as they fear they may not pass.

Don’t just take our word for it, do some of your own research at the Orthopedic Foundation For Animals website, and find out exactly why we test for these very important things.

Is There A Big Difference Between Canadian American And English Blockheads

The difference between blockhead puppies doesnt exist, no matter if theyre Canadian, American, or English / British. Once theyre grown up, they all have a head shaped like a block.

Its the other things that set them apart like the Canadians height, the Americans light coat, or the British muscular body.

All of the three listed blockhead Golden Retrievers can compete in dog shows, but they must be bred and raised up to the breed standards and have a pedigree.

The judges take into consideration a bunch of factors that will either disqualify a dog or make him a champion.

For starters, the first thing all judges look at is the dogs weight and height. On average, male blockhead Goldens weigh from 65 to 75 pounds. Golden Retriever girls should weigh from 50 to 65 pounds.

Males are always taller than females, at 23 to 24 inches at the withers. Goldie girls are 21.5 to 22.5 inches tall. If a Golden Retriever stands out from these measurements, he wont satisfy the judges requirements.

All dogs should have a symmetrical body and a lovely appearance. Their eyes should be deep set, the muzzle is supposed to be straight, while the ears are short and set above the eyes.

As for the colors, the eyes are mostly deep brown, while the nose can be black or deep brown, too.

What Kind Of Subtypes Of Goldens Exist

Golden Retriever Puppies Michigan

I know this is a surprise for most of you. Yes, Golden Retrievers come in three subtypes. Youve probably seen all of them, but didnt know they were different types. Thats because the differences between the three Golden subtypes arent that big of a deal.

Golden Retrievers come in three varieties: the English Golden Retriever, the American Golden Retriever, and the Canadian Golden Retriever. The official kennel clubs like the AKC and the CKC have approved these types of Golden Retrievers.

As I said earlier, the differences arent that noticeable. The biggest difference is in the size of the dogs. For example, Canadian Goldens are usually taller than the other two, almost up to two inches.

But, they have thin hair and a short, darker coat unlike their American and English counterparts American Golden Retrievers usually come in lighter coat shades, while their triangular eyes are always dark in color.

Compared to the British version, theyre smaller and have less muscle mass.

Lastly, English Golden Retrievers are bigger than other members of the breed. Theyre still smaller in height than Canadian Goldens, but theyre bulkier and have more muscles. British Goldens fashion a lovely long, feathered coat in cream shades.

Whats interesting about English Goldens is that they have a broad head. Their forehead is also wide. Thats why many people have problems with finding differences between English Goldens and blockhead Golden Retrievers.

How To Acquire A Blockhead Golden Retriever

If you specifically want a block head Golden Retriever dog, you can buy it from a breeder.

Searching online for a term like, say, blockhead Golden Retriever puppies for sale near me may give you links to local breeders selling the same.

What you need to know is that most breeders simply sell Golden Retriever puppies, without specifying whether or not they are block headed.

Thus it is not always that you may find a breeder specifically offering block head Golden Retriever puppies for sale.

In any event, even the breeders may not know whether or not their puppies will grow into block head dogs.

It is worth remembering that the puppies normally have to grow for several months, before their head shape is properly defined.

Thus it may not be reasonable to expect to find a breeder specifically offering a blockhead Golden Retriever for sale.

If you go further, and specifically assert that you want big blockhead Golden Retrievers for sale, chances of finding them may be even lower.

Often, the best you can do is simply buy a random Golden Retriever puppy. If it turns out to be a block head, well and good. And if it turns out to be a slender head, that should be alright too.

After 6 or so months though, the Golden Retriever puppies head shapes tend to be well defined.

Thus if you must get a block head Golden Retriever, you may need to wait until that age.

What Is A Blockhead Dog

A blockhead dog is simply one in which the head assumes a broad square structure.

So dog head structures fall into two categories. There are dogs with slender heads. Then there are dogs with broad and square heads.

It is the dogs with the broader, square heads that are referred to as blockheads. Others may refer to them as boxy head dogs.

In the slender and blockhead dog breeds, the latter tend to curry more favor than the former.

People seem to regard the square head as a sign of genetic superiority.

That is why, for instance, you will see someone paying a lot of attention to Golden Retriever or Goldendoodle head shape.

Thus a blockhead dog is simply one whose head is broad and square. That is as opposed to one whose head is long and slender.

Slender Head Golden Retriever

the strange truth about English Cream Golden Retrievers

If you are looking for a show dog, then you will want to use the block head Golden Retriever to do this. The reason for this is that they are showy and have bigger heads. This does not mean that they are necessarily any better than the second option of Golden Retriever, the Slender Head Golden Retriever.

For this breed of dog, the domed or narrow head is going to be found. This is preferred for some pet owners because they look pretty cute with this kind of head. The only difference between them and the block head breed is the side of the head. They have the same temperament and the same health factors so that should not determine whether you choose one or another. It is all a matter of personal preference.

History Of The White Golden Retriever

It is well known that the Golden breeds have roots in Europe and Scotland as far back as the late 1860s. Goldens were originally breed by a British Aristocrat, Lord Tweedmouth, who mixed a yellow-colored Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel. Today, the Tweed Water Spaniel breed is extinct, but they were previously known for being enthusiastic retrievers used for hunting and calm, loyal dogs in the home. Their descendants continue to hold these characteristics. Though this cross breeding is where the Golden Retriever originated, there are now various colors of Retrievers that stem from this common ancestor.

White Golden Retrievers are the perfect dog for families and make the perfect family pet. Their calm temperament and sweet disposition mixed with their intelligence and loyal nature prove to be a combination that is easy to love.

Blockhead Golden Retriever Health Issues

Like all other Golden Retrievers, the block head Goldies may be quite prone to skin allergy problems.

Further, like all other Golden Retrievers, the block head Goldies may be prone to some degree of snappiness.

There are also some ophthalmological problems that the block head Golden Retriever may be more prone to. Those are eye problems that all Golden Retrievers tend to be prone to.

Responsible blockhead Golden Retriever breeders go to great lengths to minimize the incidence of these health problems.

But their efforts are not always fruitful, and block head Goldies remain prone to these sorts of problems.

Thus when adopting a block head Golden Retriever, you need to know that these are issues that may affect it. That is just as they would affect any other Golden Retriever dog.

What Sets The Two Head Types Apart

The answer to this question is a pretty obvious one.

Its the head shape that sets apart these two types of Golden Retrievers. If you thought there were some major differences other than the head shape, Im sorry I have to disappoint you.

Blockhead and slender-head Golden Retrievers dont have the head shape because their bones arent positioned the same way. This results in either a wider head with rounder eyes or a narrow or wedge-shaped head with slender heads.

I do need to inform you that slender or wedge-shaped heads dont occur with British Golden Retrievers.

I mean, they do, but theyre so extremely rare! Theres really no point in discussing which head shape is the better one. The unique shape doesnt affect a dogs cognitive possibilities or make it better than the rest for any reason.

If you really dont mind which head shape your dog will carry, you wont have issues bringing home a Golden Retriever as your new family pet.

From Puppy To Mighty Paws: Raising A Blockhead Golden Retriever

When it comes to coat color or type, we can almost always determine what a puppy will look like. By looking at its parents, we can tell whether they will be big or small once they grow up.

But, its hard to tell which puppy will be a blockhead Golden Retriever and which one will not. There is no magical calculation that guarantees us well get a blockhead, not even if both parents have the same head shape.

The head type wont even be noticeable until the puppy grows up. This process is a long one and it sometimes takes 12 months for the signature head shape to come in.

So, if youre looking to strictly buy a blockhead puppy, Im sorry to inform you that you could make a big mistake. If the puppy grows up to be a slender-head Golden, you cant blame the breeder.

Even if you pick out the most reputable breeder, no one is there to blame. This is only a matter of fortune.

There is an unwritten rule that light-colored Goldens or Blondies are more prone to having a blockhead. Still, we cant be 100% sure that this head type will occur with every light Golden Retriever.

Raising a blockhead Golden Retriever is no different than raising a regular Golden.
