We highly recommend a wire crate. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are 8-10 weeks of age. It is during this 2 month period of time that youll need to move the crate around from room to room. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling.

In fact, for those families driving their puppy alone to the Atlanta airport , we recommend getting a 24 inch wire crate so that your puppy doesnt have to drive the 2 1/2 hour trip to Atlanta in a small airline carrier. Though youll probably have to leave your crate in Atlanta, the extra cost will make your trip much more pleasant. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here.

The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. If you have the room, the larger size is better for boys, but dogs like to be cozy so even though a 36-inch crate might look small for a big boy, he will be happy in it if you dont have space for such a large crate as a 42 inch one.

We prefer wire crates in most cases because they give more ventilation and Golden Retrievers like it to be cool.

Sizing A Dog Collar: The Two

After you receive your collar, youll always want to double-check that the collar fits your dog comfortably and securely. You can do this with the two-finger test. After securing the collar around your dogs neck, make sure it has enough room to move around. The collar should not be pressing into your dogs skin that means the collar is too tight.

Place two fingers between the collar and your dogs neck. The collar is fitting correctly if it feels snug. If you have to force your fingers underneath the collar, the collar is too tight. If there is a lot of extra room between the dogs neck and collar, it is too loose.

You should also ensure that the collar cannot slip over your pups head. If the collar can be slipped past your dogs ears, it is too loose and should be tightened accordingly.

Additional Golden Retriever Puppy Supplies To Have At Your Home

In addition to the supplies that you need to bring with you to pick up your puppy, there are a few supplies that youll need right away at home. Whether you bring it to our home or not, a treat bag is important to continue the training.

We recommend getting a 24 inch crate, rather than sizing down a larger crate. Your puppy can use it until he is about 4 months old and these first few weeks at home are when the portability of a small crate can be a tremendous help. The cost of the smaller crate is minimal compared to the benefits of using a smaller crate during these house training weeks. Once your puppy outgrows this crate, he will be sufficiently house-trained to move into his adult-sized crate left in a more permanent location.

Dog Bed

We have several different recommendations for dog beds discussed below. However, we most highly recommend the Kuranda bed. The Kuranda bed is a raised cot that Golden Retrievers especially love because it is cool. Weve spent hundreds of dollars on beds and our dogs prefer these raised cots more than any other. More details as to why is discussed below. In addition, if you are getting a Summer Brook puppy, we use the Kuranda bed for some of our training exercises. Therefore, this bed will make for a good transition for your puppy moving from our home to yours.

Dog Collar Sizing Chart By Weight

Weight will give you a basic idea of where to start when looking for the correct collar sizing for your dog. Below will offer you a starting point of what sized collar to buy based on your dogs weight:

• Dogs up to 10 pounds will likely need a collar with a length of 12 or less
• Dogs between 11-25 pounds will likely need a collar with a length of 11-15
• Dogs between 26-55 pounds will likely need a collar with a length of 13-18
• Dogs between 56-80 pounds will likely need a collar with a length of 16-24

While these measurements are a good starting point, it is not guaranteed that the measurements will be 100% accurate. True measurements can vary based on neck size and weight distribution. Therefore, it is best to measure your dogs neck using a cloth measuring tape if possible.

Some pet parents really like the idea of having their dogs name written clearly on the surface of the collar. But others feel that this is a dangerous thing to do. The concern in the past has been that knowing a dogs name might make him an easy target for thieves. But most dogs are always supervised when outdoors, and many dogs are also microchipped so proof of ownership is more easily accomplished.

How To Help Your Puppy Get Used To Wearing A Collar

For a puppy, wearing a collar or harness for the first time probably feels like when we wear an itchy sweater. It can take some time for them to become comfortable wearing something around their neck and body. Some puppies adjust to wearing a collar quickly, while others react much more dramatically.

Desensitizing a puppy to having a collar put on and wearing it is very similar to the process seen in the video above for head collars.

• Step One: Show your puppy the collar and then give them a treat. Repeat just showing them the collar, followed by a yummy treat. This is building a positive emotional response to seeing the collar.
• Step Two: Hold the collar out for your puppy for them to sniff. If they touch the collar with their nose, give them a treat. This is called targeting the collar and is increasing their positive emotional response.
• Step Three: With the collar unclipped, gently loop it under your puppys neck. If your puppy is tolerating this part well, you can clip it closed. If your puppy is showing some nervousness about this step, dont worry about closing the collar around their neck just yet. Give a treat and then immediately take the collar off. Repeat.
• Step Four: Add duration to wearing the collar. Treat after putting on their collar but start to wait longer and longer before taking it off.

To 12 Inches For A Golden Retriever Puppy

Youll need a collar thats 10 to 12 inches long for a Golden Retriever puppy. This size will fit most pups from 8 weeks to 6 months old. If your puppy is on the smaller side, you can start with a smaller collar and adjust it as he grows. Some collars come with extra links that you can add or remove to customize the fit.

Best Length And Width Of Leash

We use a 6 foot long 8 mm wide leashes for most situations. The 8 mm width is wide enough to be safe, but small enough to wad up in your hand when you need your leash to be smaller. We use these leashes with both puppies and adults.

For me, an 8 mm leash is always sufficient in width for me and my dogs. However, if your dog is a puller or if you have arthritis or other problems with your hands or shoulders, a thicker leash would be more comfortable in your hand. Check out the Mendota leashes.

However, there are a few situations where I prefer a shorter leash and if you dont need to be going back and forth between lengths, it is easier to just put the correct size on your dog to begin with.

For training loose leash walking, I like to use a 4 foot leash. For this training, I dont need the extra 2 feet. However, if working with puppies away from home on sit/stays and down/stays, I need the extra 2 feet that a 6-foot leash provides. If my plan is to do both heeling training and stay training away from home, Ill use a 6 feet leash and wad the leash up when I dont need the extra length.

If you plan on adjusting the length of your leash for various applications, make sure you get an 8 mm leash. A thicker leash can be a bit cumbersome when you wad it up in you hands to make it shorter.

For adult dogs, if you are 5 ft. 5 inches or shorter, a 12-inch leash is a good length. If you are taller, youll want a longer leash, either 18 or 24 inches.

Harness For Your Golden Retriever

Harnesses are a great alternative to collars. It is a safer option because even if your dog pulls, it will not hurt your pup. Harnesses with a front leash attachment is also a great training tool if you are in the process of doing no pull training.

A harness wraps around the dogs body, so if your dog does pull, the force is distributed around the dogs shoulders and behind the armpits. If you look for a padded harness like one of ours, this will also minimize any chaffing in those areas.

Going On Your First Walk

If youve taken the time to carefully get your puppy used to their collar and leash, then you should find this has paid off by the time they go out on their first walk.

That said, you have to remember this is the first time your pup has been allowed to walk outside of the house or garden, so everything will be new and exciting, with lots of interesting smells to sniff and areas to explore. So, dont be surprised if theyre not such a star on the leash out in the open as they are at home.

Its important to maintain the loose leash rule and be consistent with it, if you dont want to raise a dog who pulls.

If your dog is lagging behind, lure them on to follow you using some extra-delicious treats. Again, high-value treats are key here, to compete with all those lovely smells and other distractions.

If your pup is pulling ahead, youll need to use a different tactic. Every time they pull, stop completely still and dont start going again until theyve relaxed and are no longer putting pressure on the leash. This way theyll learn that when they pull they actually get where they want to go slower, rather than faster.

This might mean things are very slow-going at first, and you may not even get particularly far from your own front door, but it will pay off in the end.

As ever, be sure to treat and praise your pup when theyre walking nicely on the lead.
