First of all, Goldendoodles are a mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Goldendoodle coat types are determined by the percentage of each dog in their puppies.

Goldendoodle hair comes in three types. These types are curly, wavy, and straight. The curlier the hair, the higher the percentage of Poodle in the Goldendoodle, and the straighter the hair, the higher the percentage of Golden Retriever in the Goldendoodle.

Read on to learn more about the different Goldendoodle hair types. Also, about how these types are determined and ways to take care of each coat type.

Lack Of Proper Care And Grooming

Being a family dog, Golden Retrievers requires a lot of care and grooming. You need to brush your pets skin coat daily followed by a proper bath once a month. Besides this, parenting a pet involves cleaning the ears, hair, teeth, and paws.

Apart from this, your pet also needs regular grooming. And if you fail to care for your pet, its health degrades. As a consequence, the hair of your Golden Retriever becomes wavy.

Do Dog Breed Golden Retrievers Have Hair Or Fur

If youre a newcomer to the world of dog owners, you might not know that fur and hair are two different things. While fur refers to a coat that covers the body with dense strands of protein, hair is a smaller version of it.

Curly Golden Retrievers fur is usually wavy or curly because its water-repellent top layer is shorter than the bottom layer .

Mixing these two layers causes curls or waves to appear on your dogs coat. However, their water-repellent properties are now weakened because of this mixture.

Thats why they need to be treated with special care if you want your Golden Retriever to stay healthy and beautiful for a long time.

Genetics Is The Reason For Your Golden Retrievers Curly Hair

I

Genetics plays a huge role in virtually everything that your Golden Retriever puppy inherits from his parents.

Genes passed down from your pups parents not only determine your dogs coat colour, but also the length and texture.

So, this means that if your pups parents had a curly/wavy coat, then your pup will as well.

Ive discussed how genes play a role in determining the colour of your Golden Retrievers coat, as well as the length of your Golden Retrievers coat in my previous articles.

Now, well look at how genes determine texture.

Your Golden Retrievers curly or wavy coat is a genetic trait that is inherited as a semi-dominant gene, which runs in the family.

The KRT71 gene and variants within the gene are responsible for giving your Golden Retriever a curly, wavy or straight coat.

There are 2 versions of this gene:

Alleles: N = No Curl C = Curl

Dogs with two copies of N/N will have a straight coat.

Dogs with N/C are expected to have wavy coats.

Dogs with two copies of C/C will have a curly coat.

The reason curly hair is a semi-dominant gene is that only one copy of the gene is required to produce a wavy coat.

But, two copies of the gene will produce a very curly coat.

Hopefully, that gives you a bit of understanding as to the texture of your Golden Retrievers coat.

But, genetics isnt the only reason for curly hair in your Golden Retriever.

Golden Retrievers Are So Popular In Movies Due To Their Obedient Nature

Golden Retrievers are often featured in movies and television shows, including Air Bud and Homeward Bound. While the breed is certainly cute, it’s not their beauty that gets Goldens so many television spots. It’s their mellow nature, combined with their trainability.

Golden Retrievers are easy to train, and they perform reliably and consistently. That’s what makes them such popular guide dogs, and it’s also what led the breed to take first in AKC obedience trials when they were introduced in 1977.

The Personality Of A Golden Retriever

These dogs have a heart larger than their head. They love their owners with their entire being and are so eager to please.

This makes them easy to train because they are so obedient.

If you have kids, Golden Retrievers will love them.

They are super gentle and friendly around small children and make great lifelong companions.

While these dogs are good at hunting and can attack birds, Golden Retrievers dont use these skills in guarding.

In fact, they dont make great guard dogs as they seem to lack the instinct.

Golden Retrievers love going outside and getting exercise, but they can adapt to smaller environments, unlike curly-coated retrievers.

These dogs can adapt to apartments just fine.

Where To Adopt Or Buy A Curly

The curly-coated retriever offers the agility and lovable personality that retrievers are known for, and its unique coat makes it stand out among its peers. However, since they’re less popular than Labrador and golden retrievers, they’re not as likely to be found in local shelters. To find one of these special retrievers to join your family, check out breed-specific rescue groups that help these lovable dogs find new homes.

If you’re planning to adopt a curly-coated retriever as a puppy, there is a dedicated community of breeders to learn about. Research responsible breeders that provide relevant genetic testing results and take excellent care of their dogs. CCR puppies typically cost between $1,000 and $2,500, but prices can vary depending on pedigree and availability. Prospective adopters should also prepare to join a waiting list for puppies.

Is Your Goldens Wavy Hair Normal Or Not

You easily tell whether their wavy coats are normal or not by checking their parents and really checking their coats.

If you have gotten your dog from a good breeder, chances are they will have the full history of the parents and the coat types. If one or both of their parents had wavy coats, then it could be genetic.

However, having wavy parents is very rarely the case with dog breeders who try to make their dogs as close as possible to the common perfect image of a dog breed, which in the case of goldens will mean having a fluffy golden coat and not a wavy or curly one.

When is a wavy coat not normal?

Sometimes, however, it will not be because of their genetics or nature and it can be traced to something else.

Sometimes goldens with curly hair may suffer from a lack of coat growth and the reason may be a problem with their diet such as:

  • Not getting enough nutrients
  • Too little food

Also, it may be because they are not receiving proper grooming or they are not active enough.

If they eat good amounts of high-quality foods that give them the nutrients that their body needs, they are active, they have daily exercise, and they have a proper grooming routine, their coats should be perfectly healthy and normal.

Can I Straighten My Golden Retrievers Hair

In most cases, if your adult Golden retriever has curly hair it is likely to stay that way for its life. It may change slightly over time, but there isnt a lot that you can do to get it straight. There are a few things however that have helped owners get a bit of a smoother look.

  • Blow-dry your dogs hair after bathing or swimming.
  • Use a high-quality conditioner when bathing.
  • Embrace the waves and curls.

Being Wet Causes Curly Hair & Crimped Ears

Show Grooming for Golden Retriever with #Hydra

Have you ever noticed that when your Golden Retriever is wet his fur starts to get curly or crimped?

This is especially true around the ears.

My Golden Retriever, Ellie gets crimped ears and the hair along her butt becomes super curly.

It turns out that the curls actually serve a purpose! They repel water so that the fur doesnt become soaking wet.

Ear crimping seems to be pretty common, and its really cute. But, many owners have issues with matting behind the ears, because hair tends to be curlier there.

Again, brushing is important, to avoid mats from forming.

Most of the time, the curls and crimping go away after you brush them, however, in some Goldens the crimping stays even when the fur is dry.

This cute Golden Retriever in the video below is fortunate enough to have beautiful ear crimping all the time:

Although most breeds, like the American Golden Retrievers, have dark golden-colored straight hair, some of the English Golden Retrievers have wavy hair. However, I do not think that hair type can be a problem as long as the pet is healthy and happy.

But having said that, managing curly hair for sure is a tedious job. Since the curls can easily entangle, matting in your Golden Retrievers curly hair is the most common problem.
