Dog Dandruff: Frequently Asked Questions

If you start to notice that your dogs fur is covered in white flakes, youll probably have a million questions running through your head. Dont panic! Dandruff in dogs is quite common, and in most cases, it can be easily treated.

Weve compiled some of the most frequently asked questions about dandruff in dogs so you can figure out how to properly treat your pup as quickly as possible:

Other Causes Of Dry Skin And Hair Loss

Hormonal diseases can cause changes to skin and hair growth. Hypothyroidism and Cushings disease can result in a dull and brittle coat, dry skin, hair loss, pigmentation and secondary infection.

Both conditions can be diagnosed with blood tests but it can sometimes be challenging to interpret the results. Hypothyroid dogs may have low energy and weight gain and can be treated with lifelong medication. Dogs with Cushings disease will normally drink and urinate excessively, have thin skin that bruises easily, a pot-bellied appearance and a higher chance of urinary tract infections. Once diagnosed, medical treatment is usually effective but again needs to be lifelong.

Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis an uncommon birth skin defect causing skin cells to grow abnormally. The condition is reported in a range of breeds, including the Jack Russell Terrier, Cairn Terrier, West Highland White Terrier and Golden Retriever. Fine peeling as a pup is often unnoticed but as the patient ages, large flakes of skin come away, sometimes with underlying darkening of the skin. Diagnosis is via skin biopsy and treatment is difficult, involving special shampoos, supplements and treating secondary infections.

Epitheliotropic lymphoma

Although dry skin can sound simple, and may be so, it is always worth getting your pet checked by a vet in case there is more to it than meets the eye.

If your dog does have dry, flaky, itchy skin this winter, you should know that youre not a bad pet parent and that youre not alone! Seasonal dry skin can be a concern in dogs just as in people and its not a life-threatening condition. Changes in grooming practices, adding moisture to indoor air and a quality dog food can help reduce and possibly eliminate the effects of winters dry air on your dogs skin and coat.

Should I Be Worried If My Dog Has Dandruff

In most cases, dandruff in dogs is nothing to worry about. Its often just a symptom of stress or cold weather and will go away on its own in time. However, there are a few instances when dog dandruff is something to be more concerned about.

If your dog experiences itchiness, has an odor emanating from his or her skin, excessive dandruff, hair loss, irritated skin, or other signs of discomfort, you should bring them to the vet as soon as possible.

Incorporate Fatty Acids Into Your Pups Diet

A lack of omega fatty acids in your dogs diet could also be causing their dandruff. If this is the case for your pup, try incorporating more fatty acids into their diet. You can do this with pills or by adding oil to their food. Overall, its just important to prioritize feeding your dog a healthy and well-balanced diet.

Using Immunotherapy To Treat Skin Allergies

  • 1Ask your vet how immunotherapy works. Immunotherapy, also called Allergen Specific Immunotherapy , is usually the best choice for treating CAD. It can help your Golden Retriever achieve remission without the use of other medications . ASIT works by gradually desensitizing your dogs immune system to the allergens causing the CAD.XResearch source The immunotherapy medicine, commonly given by injection, contains small amounts of the specific allergens to which your Golden Retriever is allergic.
  • By exposing your Golden Retriever to small, measured amounts of the allergens , your dogs immune system would slowly become more tolerant of the allergens over time, therefore lessening the allergic reaction.XResearch source
  • Results of the skin tests your vet performed to diagnose CAD would indicate the specific allergens.
  • Immunotherapy is most helpful for dogs that have skin allergies for longer than two to three months at a time and have not responded well to other skin allergy medications. It is a lifelong treatment.
  • 2Have your vet perform the immunotherapy injections. Immunotherapy injections are usually given about once every one to four weeks. Your vet will let you know how often your Golden Retriever will need the injections. It may help to schedule several appointments at one time to make sure your dog receives stays on schedule with the treatment.
  • Why Shouldnt You Use Human Shampoo And Conditioner

Firefighter rescues golden retriever from icy Colorado pond

Unlike humans, Golden Retrievers have a different body structure, metabolism, and functioning. Thus, the products beneficial for humans might not be effective for your pal.

Further, the skin and hair of this breed are more sensitive than humans. Hence, the harsh chemicals used to wash out oil and greasy from human skin can damage the skin coat of your pet.

Besides this, the pH level of Retrievers differs from humans. Therefore, human shampoos and conditioners can cause skin irritation, drying out, rashes, itching, and allergies in your pet. So, this shampoo might be harsh in your pals skin that leads to life-threatening consequences.

    How Do Dogs Get Ichthyosis

This disease is inherited and multiple puppies in a litter may have the disease. It has what is called a recessive mode of inheritance, which means that both parents must carry the gene for the puppies to show signs. The parents may have two disease genes or one normal gene and one diseased gene, so they look normal. If the puppies in the litter get one disease gene from each of their parents they will be affected with the scaling disease, which can be seen when you look at them. Alternatively, if they just get one diseased gene and one normal gene, they will look normal but will be at risk of passing the disease on if they have puppies in future.

What Are The Clinical Signs Of Seborrhea

In dogs, seborrhea usually affects skin areas that are rich in sebaceous glands, especially the skin along the back. The affected areas of skin often flake off like dandruff that can be seen on the dog’s bedding and other places where the dog lies. Some skin areas may be red and inflamed, with either a dry or oily feel to the lesions, and may be worse in areas with skin folds, such as the feet, neck, lips, armpits, thighs, and underside. Many dogs will have an odor associated with seborrhea. This odor is usually worsened if the seborrhea is complicated by a secondary bacterial or yeast skin infection.

Ichthyosis Will Not Affect Summer Brook Puppies

36 abandoned Golden Retrievers rescued from Turkey

However, starting in 2018, we had bred it out of most of our dogs and had mostly clear dogs with a few exceptions that were carriers. These carriers will never be bred to anything except a clear. Because Ichthyosis is carried on a recessive gene, there is no chance of a puppy being affected as long as at least one parent is clear. All of our breedings involve a clear parent.

We have had two dogs with an affected DNA diagnosis in the past. Neither of these two past Summer Brook affected dogs had symptoms that anyone except for me was aware of.

Since my experience with Ichthyosis was insignificant and because statistics from ichthyosis indicated that an affected diagnosis didnt necessarily mean a problem, I was hesitant to place much importance on the test. However, since then, I have talked to many breeders who know of dogs with significant issues. Though these issues dont cause problems for the dog himself, the flaking can be a major inconvenience for the families of indoor dogs. All Summer Brook puppies are inside companions. Therefore, we dont want to risk causing families to deal with black flakes all over their home.

    Susceptibility To Skin Allergies

Atopic dermatitis is a heritable condition that some Golden Retrievers develop as an inflammatory reaction to things like tree pollens, grasses, ragweeds, dust, mold and insects such as fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Food intolerances can also cause skin allergies and gastrointestinal disorders in Golden Retrievers.

As there are so many possible causes, it is important to bring your dog in for veterinary treatment as soon as you notice a change in her fur, skin, or an increase in itching, scratching, chewing or licking herself. The veterinarian will need your help in tracing the onset of your dogs condition, so be sure to give a detailed account of when the signs began, how they are progressing, and how your dog is behaving. Also, be sure to report on your dogs nutrition, environment, normal behavior , and any grooming products you have recently used.

The veterinarian may conduct standard laboratory tests, such as blood count, blood biochemistry profile and urinalysis to rule out hyperthyroidism, bacterial or fungal infections, or parasites.

The most important tests are those of the skin itself: a scraping of your dogs skin will be analyzed for fungal and bacterial cultures. If the veterinarian identifies any growth on your dogs skin, a biopsy may be taken and submitted to a pathologist for examination in order to determine the presence of parasites, infection, or cancerous cells. If allergies are suspected, allergy testing may be recommended, or your veterinarian may elect to treat symptomaitcally. If a food reaction is suspected, you may conduct an outpatient elimination trial and report your dogs condition to the veterinarian regularly.

    1. Atopic Dermatitis

Among the common skin allergies that are affecting every canine breed is atopic dermatitis. But it is more likely to develop in breeds such as Poodles, Cocker Spaniels, Bulldogs, and Golden Retrievers/ This condition is often due to pollens and other inhaled protein particles. As a result, this leads to hypersensitivity.

Sometimes it is induced from an indoor or an environmental allergen. When golden retrievers have this, they may experience intense itching which affects the face, abdomen, and feet. As well as rhinitis, asthma, conjunctivitis. There are also few cases that some dog breeds experienced discoloration of the coat due to atopy or atopic dermatitis.

Unfortunately, atopic dermatitis is incurable but it has readily treatment to alleviate its worsening condition. If this condition becomes worse, your goldie might affect its behavior leading to aggressive behavior and even shy away from people.

    2. Flea allergies

Another everyday struggle and most debilitating to the golden retrievers are fleas. They are the usual suspect why some goldies are itching excessively to the point that they feel very irritated. Flea allergies are rampant especially when its midsummer to fall, and in warmer climates, it can be year-round.
