Factors That Control Hair Length In Golden Retrievers

7 Tips to Manage Golden Retriever Shedding

Did you know that the long hair on a retriever is a result of a recessive genetic mutation? This mutation occurs in the FGF5 gene, which controls the hair cycle and length on your golden. The topcoat will only grow to lengths that this gene allows.

On the same note, there are additional factors that affect a retrievers hair length.

Short Hair Golden Retrievers Coats

Golden Retrievers as well as some other breeds of dog are commonly referred to as the double coat. The first coat is the undercoat, which is composed of short hair that is densely packed that is designed to keep your dog dry and warm.

Second coats are also known as the top coat. The medium-long hair on the upper coat totally covers the undercoat , and is the coat well be discussing during this post.

Golden Retriever Personality And Temperament

Golden Retrievers generally have a great temperamentthey are often friendly with children, other pets, and even strangers. They enjoy being the center of attention.

Golden Retrievers also love affection and being petted and will nudge you gently so that you continue to pet them.

It is very rare for a Golden Retriever to show any sign of aggression.

Short Hair Golden Retriever

There is no official short haired variety of the Golden Retriever breed. But, some Goldens will naturally have shorter hair than others. For instance, many field bred Goldens have shorter fur, which helps them avoid tangles and injuries when retrieving game! However, most Golden Retrievers will have longer fur with plenty of feathering.

What About Golden Retrievers And Allergies

Now, if youre looking for a golden retriever with a short coat for allergy purposes, you might be barking up the wrong tree.

For one, its not exactly the fur that causes allergic reactions.

Most people are allergic to dander , and possibly the saliva and urine .

So getting a golden with shorter fur wont necessarily help you if youre allergic to goldens.

There will still be dander everywhere, and theyll probably have a hard time not licking your face because theyre so full of love

Golden Retrievers Aged Under 2 Years

A Golden Retriever generally doesnt grow its whole mature coat until it gets to roughly two years of age. If your dog is still younger than this then theres a good chance that their hair is still growing and they could be considered a short-haired Golden Retriever.

The longer adult coats tend to start coming in when your dog gets to three months of age.

At first, your Golden will begin to grow feathered hair around the tail, and then the fur starts to grow over the rest of the body. The tail is usually the starting point though. Eventually, the fur will start growing longer towards the head too.

A Golden can sometimes begin to grow the feathers on the tail when they reach 3 months old. Sometimes though the feathers will grow much later in life.

In the vast majority of cases, Goldens dont tend to grow their mature coats until they reach 3 years of age. Not only that, but gender can also come into play since males and females can grow their fur at different speeds.

First Signs Of Hair Growth On The Golden Retriever

It is a good idea to look for some of the first signs of hair growth on your Golden Retriever.

While you may be excited to see that full coat come in, you will have to wait a few months to see much of it.

Most Golden Retriever puppies are not going to start seeing the longer hair until they are close to three months, and this is often going to be the hair that grows on the tail first, rather than the lush and thick hair that you want over the rest of the body.

Once the tail starts to grow longer hair, the dog owner will start to see other areas growing as well.

It does not take long for the puppy to start showing some of the longer hair that will make up that full coat later on.

This growth marks a departure away from all the puppy fluff and will be the beginning of the full coat that you should see with the adult dog.

If the coat of the puppys parents took a long time to grow in, then it is more likely that the puppy will take longer to grow that full coat as well.

Under most circumstances though, the short, fluffy coat of the puppy will last for the first three months.

Then it will slowly start to change into the longer coat.

This does take a few months to happen and there are exceptions, especially if the dogs parents took longer to get the full coat.

Short Haired Golden Retriever Why

Recently, the American Kennel Club hasnt recognized any short haired Golden Retriever. The reason is simple: To this Club, short hair doesnt come from the pure breed.

So, if one day, you realize that your Golden Retriever doesnt look like others and you still dont know why. Dont worry, there are three reasons as follows:

Different Types Of Retrievers Are Sometimes Confused For Goldens

GROOM your GOLDEN RETRIEVER at HOME like a BOSS!

Other than a mixed breed, another option would be that you dont have a Golden Retriever at all, but another retriever breed altogether.

Other common retriever breeds can include:

  • Curly-coated Retriever the tallest of the breed, the curly-coated retriever is easy to spot with its mane of tight curls. This breed can be black and even silver and often produce a more wavy coat when mixed with a pure Golden.
  • Chesapeake Bay Retriever usually a variation of brown, they can be slightly red or lean more toward golden straw. They have a shorter, slightly wavy coat, and a mix would produce a long wavy coat.
  • Flat-Coated Retriever as the name would suggest, this breed has long flat hair, though its usual black coat easily identifies it. You can read more about Flat-Coated Retrievers in my article here.

Check Your Dogs Ancestry

When thinking about why your dog has shorter hair, its worth checking the ancestry of the dog to check that it isnt the reason for your dogs slightly shorter fur.

There are some ways that you can do this.

  • Ask for the dogs parents documents and then manually check the lineage.
  • If the above action is not an option then you can also conduct a DNA test on your dog.

It can be very helpful to do both of these things just to double-check.

Easier To Spot Ticks And Fleas

Since short-haired golden retrievers have less hair, its easier to spot ticks and fleas.

This is important because ticks and fleas can cause irritation and even disease in dogs.

However, giving a short haircut doesnt mean that you can protect them directly from fleas and ticks. You have to prevent those from other measurements and medications.

How To Get A Golden Retriever With Shorter Coat

The length of Golden Retrievers fur coats is dependent on their heritage. This means that if you want to get your hands on a Golden Retriever with short hair, you will need to locate a breeder that has Golden Retriever parents that have short hair. Their infant will most likely have short hair too.

When Does Golden Fur Grow To Full Length

Golden Retriever Short Haircut

Typically, Golden Retrievers grow a healthy coat of fur within about a years time. Some dog experts and veterinarians also attempt to guess their age by inspecting their fur. Still, considering the number of breeds and mixes out there, wed suggest to bring this number up to approximately a year and a half or maybe even two.

In other words, if you see a Golden Retriever happily strutting about sporting short and bouncy fur, and if they seem only about a year old, then chances are that their fur coat is still going to grow a little longer.

Long Coats And Allergies

To be perfectly honest, it is not the coats that people are allergic to when they say they have an allergy with dogs. The allergy is likely from the dander, which is dead skin cells. The allergy could also be from the urine or the dogs saliva.

This should be known before purchasing a Golden. Truth be told, when the coat on a Golden is trimmed or cut, this could cause health issues for the Retriever and it could also ruin the gorgeous coat of the Golden Retriever.

Another issue you will need to consider before choosing a Golden Retriever. If you are considering a Golden, but want short hair to eliminate the shedding. You likely do not want a Golden. Most animals, dogs and cats included, do shed at least twice a year. Some animals, it may be minimal, for others, it seems endless.

You may also find hair in some of the strangest locations. Even if you take your Retriever to a groomer, this will not entirely prevent loose hairs from floating all over the house. Including landing on your dinner plate. There is likely going to be dog hairs everywhere including the furniture and also rooms that the dog never enters.

There are a few things that you can do to help minimize the amount of hair floating through your home.

  • Brush your Golden Retriever on a daily basis
  • Bathe the Retriever every other month
  • Be sure to feed them a high quality dog food

Coming to another important question when do the retrievers grow hair?

Most of the time, a Golden Retriever starts to grow hair when they are three months old. Once it starts, there is no going back. They will start to grow hair on their tail, known as feathering. When they are eight months old, this feathering will become more visible. You will be able to see the hair pretty well once the dog is two-years-old.

Differences In Physical Characteristics

Update on golden summer haircut

While English Cream Golden Retrievers have shorter hair, they do not shed less than their American and Canadian cousins.

The second factor in which Goldens differ is by color. Goldens are known for their luxuriant locks, which come in a variety of golden hues. Between Goldens, there is little color difference. Unlike Labrador retrievers, Golden Retrievers tend to stick to a limited color palette.

The American Kennel Club only allows Golden Retrievers if they are lightly, perfectly or dark golden . British and Canadian Kennel Clubs, however, accept more coat colors, including cream.

Despite the attractiveness of the gold hue, some Goldens do not fall inside this spectrum. Golden Retriever colors can range from pure white to mahogany, red and even black. They are not as common as they once were, but they are still found.

All Golden Retrievers, regardless of variety, have a similar temperament. For new dog owners, they are an excellent choice since they are easily trainable. Also, they are loving and affectionate, as long as their fur parents treat them right.

Theyve Got A Unique Coat

As has been said, Golden Retrievers belong to the long hair breed because they have a very long and dense coat. However, there is nothing to ask all the Golden Retrievers to have this feature. Some Golden Retrievers can be found with short hair, but they are confirmed to be the standard one when they are tested. In these cases, they have the key in their genes. They may have some genetic variation that makes them a short-haired coat compared to the same dog breed.

However, you must know that this is a very rare case. Youll know this if youre holding a group of same-parent dogs, and theres going to be one of them whose hair is short. So its definitely because of the gene problems.

Certain Health Conditions Can Cause Hair Loss

If you think your Goldens hair is shorter than it should be, you should take your dog to the vet to double-check that health conditions arent having an effect on their coat. It can be especially problematic when certain health conditions are contracted at a young age since it can result in permanent damage to the dogs coat.

In some bad situations, health conditions can result in hair loss for your dog. Sometimes dogs may even lose their hair in clumps.

For this reason, you may begin to think that your dogs hair is shorter than it necessarily needs to be. In reality, though, your dog just has less hair because they have lost it, which isnt a good thing.

Golden Retriever Puppies Do Not Have Long Hair

Your Golden Retrievers puppy coat is soft and fluffy and lacks any feathering that an adult Golden has.

It takes up to two years for your Golden Retriever to have his full adult coat.

Its a slow process, but you will start to notice feathering on your puppys tail around the age of 3 to 4 months.

This new hair growth will be darker than the rest of your puppys coat.

Golden Retrievers have feathering along their tail, legs, and belly.

The speed at which your Golden Retriever grows his adult coat is determined by genetics.

All About The Golden Retrievers Coat

One of the most distinctive features of this breed is the Goldens lustrous, beautiful coat. Golden Retrievers can range in color from light golden to a darker, more reddish gold.

Their fur is double-coated, meaning that there is a thicker, denser undercoat beneath their longer, silkier overcoat.

When it comes to grooming, youll most likely need to brush your Golden once or twice a week to remove dead hairs and keep the dogs coat healthy. To help keep your dogs fur and skin in good shape, a bath once every two months or so may be needed.

Golden Retrievers shed year-round, but twice a year they will blow out their undercoats in preparation for a change in seasons. During these periods, youll find your Golden Retriever shedding significantly more. Instead of brushing every few days, youll probably need to give your dog a daily brushing.

Youll also find feathering on the dogs coat, which refers to long hairs that stand up straight instead of lying flat against the dogs body.
