Golden Retrievers Saved From Slaughter Arrive In Miami From China

MIAMI, Fla. A golden retriever rescue group based in South Florida awaited the arrival of 20 dogs from China being flown into Miami along with 20 eager dog lovers waiting to take their new pet home.

A spokesperson for Golden Rescue South Florida said the dogs were abused in China and would have most likely been butchered and ended up in the dog market as food.

Unfortunately, they have meat markets, they eat dogs, so were saving them from the slaughterhouses, the meat markets some of them are owner surrenders, Kristine Minerva, rescue coordinator, said.

The dogs arrived Sunday morning in Miami via China Air. Local families adopting the animals were interviewed prior to picking up their retrievers. Golden Rescue said they make sure that the owner and home are the right fit for the rescued pup and that the accommodations are suitable for the dogs.

The group raised money to bring the golden retrievers here they said it costs a minimum of $2,600 per dog.

It was a big undertaking along with several months of planning including the dogs needing customs paperwork to enter the United States, along with medical exams upon arrival.

China is just one international location for Golden Rescue South Florida. The nonprofit organization has rescued retrievers from Turkey, South Korea, and Puerto Rico, as well as working with other animal advocacy groups and shelters in South Florida.

Why Help International Rescues

The demand for rescued Goldens in Southern California exceeds four times the availability of domestic rescue Golden Retrievers. Given the opportunity, SCGRR began to work with several international rescuers to help save Goldens in other countries as we have wonderful families waiting for the perfect companion.

Many of our rescue partners have no funding, They are good Samaritans doing what they can out of pure passion for these gentle souls. This is the case for our overseas partners on the ground in China , South Korea, and Turkey.

SCGRR provides the structure in Southern California to welcome dogs from these countries, providing immediate veterinary care, placing them into foster homes, and ultimately adoption. We reimburse these international rescue partners for a variety of expenses such as crates and water bottles for travel, paperwork fees, airline fees, boarding, or vaccines. Most receive basic medical treatment and required vaccines before arrival, but conditions such as heartworm treatment, advanced dental care, and glaucoma to repairing poorly triaged broken bones or abscesses from trauma these are dealt with under our supervision here, with our rescue veterinarians, just as we would our domestic Goldens.

The average cost to support the independent rescuers and get these precious pups to the U.S. over $1000 for each golden.

Please consider donating to help an International Rescue Dog, and give them a chance at their American dream.

VASS, N.C., May 6, 2022 China Rescue Dogs, a leading International non-profit dog rescue based in the United States, is in the middle of an urgent dog rescue effort in China. Shanghai Animal Rescue reached out to China Rescue Dogs for help after they discovered a dog breed farm north of Harbin were selling all their dogs into the meat-trade. 46 adult Goldens, 8 puppies, and 22 Corgis were going to be trucked to Yulin to be slaughtered for the 2022 Yulin Dog Meat Festival.

The living conditions at this dog breed farm are just awful, exclaimed Jill Stewart, President and Founder of China Rescue Dogs. It is heartbreaking that this breeder was going to just discard their entire inventory of dogs to be slaughtered. We had to do something. Doing nothing was not an option.

Despite international pressure, dog slaughterhouses and eating dog meat are not outlawed in China. Even though the local government no longer sponsors the Yulin Dog Meat festival, it continues to take place every year in June. With no national animal rights laws in place in China, most dogs have little chance at living a full life.

Yulin happens every day in China, said Brandy Cherven, Vice President of Operations for China Rescue Dogs. Dogs are still brutalized, tortured, and eaten due to outdated beliefs of gaining more wisdom, warding off evil spirits, or keeping cool in the summer months.

The mission of China Rescue Dogs is to rescue and rehabilitate dogs from the meat trade in China and provide them with loving homes in the U.S. and Canada. Working with trusted rescues and shelters in China, we first remove the dogs from imminent harm, treat the physical and psychological injuries from severe abuse and neglect, and socialize the dogs so that they can be integrated into loving family environments. Then, in partnership with other rescues in the U.S. and Canada, we locate adoptive for the dogs and arrange transportation of the dogs from China to their new forever families in the U.S. and Canada.

Finally, we hope that, through our rescue efforts, we also shine a light on the dog meat trade in China and other countries and, thereby, encourage others to advocate for the end of the dog meat trade and speak up for those who have no voice.

Goldens Without Borders Rescue

With a Golden Retriever rescue in every state and more than 80 Golden Retriever rescues in the U.S., we saw a great need to help the thousands of Goldens that are killed each year in overseas countries from the horrific dog meat trade.

We are exclusively an international rescue and we rely on both passenger and cargo flights to safely transport our rescued Goldens home to America. We are a 5013 nonprofit run entirely on donations and 100% by volunteers. We are a foster based rescue with no physical location and no paid staff. We are a platinum member on GuideStar for our transparency.

Golden Retrievers Rescued From China Meat Market Brought To South Florida

MIAMI Twenty golden retrievers rescued from a meat market in China now have homes in South Florida.

They arrived Sunday in Miami to meet their loving forever families.

A South Florida rescue organization raised $60,000 to bring them to the U.S.

“This is the happiest day in 2020 for me. The fact that we’ve been waiting so long for these dogs to arrive, it’s been such a long journey and to have her here means everything. It truly is making our year,” said Katie Brown, who adopted one of the dogs.

Once the dogs got a check-up, a quick bath and some snacks, they were ready to go home with their new families.

The rescue coordinator said the event was six months in the making with work bringing the dogs to the U.S. starting in June.

The Only Hope For These Dogs Is Finding Homes In Other Countries Like The United States

An estimated 10 million dogs are killed and consumed each year in China. The majority of dogs who end up at slaughterhouses are stolen pets and retired breeding dogs. Dogs are rarely leashed in China and are easily snatched from their owners and forced into a waiting car. Golden Retrievers are one of the meat trades most popular dog breeds.

Volunteers in China are working hard to save these dogs from a terrifying fate. They approach butcher shop owners when they see a dog tied up behind the premises and plead for the dogs release. Other rescuers watch for large trucks filled with stolen dogs en route to the slaughterhouses and do their best to stop them. But the volume is overwhelming.

In late February, a RAGOM volunteer traveled to Beijing to answer a plea for help. In China, rescuers are inundated with Golden Retrievers who have been saved from these restaurants, meat trucks, and slaughterhouses. Nicole was there to make connections with local rescuers and to bring dogs back to Minnesota.

Once rescued, dogs are housed by kindly volunteers in China. However, the facilities are full beyond capacity, sometimes housing as many as 500 1,000 dogs. Adoption of larger breeds, which are still banned in many areas of China, is not likely.

The dogs only hope is to find homes in other countries. Dog rescue organizations around the world are answering the call to get these dogs out of China and into adoptive homes. RAGOM has joined this effort.

The long journey of 31 rescue dogs is finally over.

According to a release from China Rescue Dogs, the animal welfare nonprofit rescued the canines 16 golden retrievers and a mix of French bulldogs and pugs from the dog meat trade in China in April.

Unfortunately, the dogs’ journey to the United States to find homes was delayed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s one-year ban on importing dogs into the U.S. from more than 100 countries, including China.

The ban, which went into effect in July 2021, was implemented in response to the alarming number of dogs bought from foreign countries that arrived in the U.S. with false rabies vaccination certificates the year prior.

In June, the CDC extended the ban through January 2023 but also adjusted the ban to allow dogs from restricted countries to enter the U.S. with CDC approval.

Through working with the CDC and with assistance from other animal lovers, China Rescue Dogs was able to get the 31 rescue dogs they saved from the meat trade into the United States on Sept. 23 after a three-week stay in Vancouver, Canada.

Chinas Dog Meat Trade

CAUTION: The information below will be disturbing.

Chinas dog meat trade has been going on for decades. The tradition of eating dogs in some areas may have started during periods of famine when the only option for survival was to eat the stray dogs. Unfortunately, as a result, this has continued into prosperous times. As you read through this account of the dog meat trade, you must keep in mind that this is not a cultural tradition and that there is a rapidly growing outcry against the practice not only internationally but from the Chinese people themselves. Please dont paint the Chinese people with a broad brush.

You may be under the misconception that there are dog farms in China, similar to our cattle ranches: dogs are bred, born, raised then taken off to the slaughterhouse for a humane demise. You couldnt be further from the truth. Many of the dogs rescued from the dog meat trade are stolen pets! Due to the lack of awareness dog ownership responsibilities and of the risk, many people in China do not keep their dogs on leashes. Dog meat trade vans will cruise the streets of Beijing and surrounding towns looking for dogs. Here is a possible scenario: someone is walking his/her dog down the street , a van pulls up, a guy jumps out and snatches the dog before the owner can react. Most of the time, in cases like this, the owner will never see that dog again! Millions of pet dogs are stolen every year and sent to slaughterhouses.

In Shanghai, there are still COVID lockdown restrictions. Then, in the United States, theres a year-long ban on importing dogs from over 100 countries, which was put in place in July 2021. So, the areas of North America that can adopt these dogs are limited for now. If the ban is lifted in July, then people in the United States may be able to give these dogs homes.

These organizations are determined to make sure all the dogs make it to safety. To see updates on the rescue, you can visit . You can also donate to help bring more dogs to safety.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif., Sept. 27, 2022 China Rescue Dogs, a 501 organization, committed to rescuing and saving dogs from the slaughterhouses, meat trade, abuse, and neglect in China, has rescued into the U.S. the first large shipments of dogs from China following the Center for Disease Control and Prevention dog ban.

This truly was a global effort with teams from China, Canada and the United States all coming together to save these dogs from slaughter, acknowledged Jill Stewart, President and Founder of China Rescue Dogs.

The dogs were all saved in April 2022 from a dog meat breeding farm in China. Their rescue was featured by People:

To know these dogs now have a second chance at life and will experience love for the first time, makes all the time spent on a project like this worthwhile, said Brandy Cherven, Vice President of China Rescue Dogs. They were being sent to the slaughterhouse when we stepped in and saved them.

There are 10 other rescue organizations that have helped find these pups their forever homes. Of the 31 survivors now in the U.S., 16 are Golden Retrievers and 15 are Frenchies and Pugs. Other dogs from the April 2022 rescue have already been adopted in Canada.

The Golden Rescue From China

Combine 4 Chinese rescues, 10 golden retriever rescues from the U.S., dozens of volunteers, thousands of dollars in donations and the result is 105 dogs rescued from China. Approximately 75 of the dogs were golden retrievers. Some of the dogs had been family pets. Early on in the pandemic Chinese citizens were instructed to give up their pets. Dogs were filling up the shelters some were found on the streets. There was a sense of urgency to rescue them before the onset of the cold winter weather. Their lives in China were not assured.

This mission was not for the undetermined. As if there werent difficulties in the first place, the COVID virus presented the biggest obstacle as it changed the process from challenging to quite formidableand that occurred mid-operation!

Pre-COVID, dogs would fly on the same plane as their flight volunteers. Dogs would have to be considered as luggage, but their crate time was less and the process much less costly.

Thanks to the generosity of those who donated, 105 dogs were rescued and will find homes here in the States. We are honored that among all the rescue associations involved, As Good as Gold contributors provided the second largest dollar amount in contributions to this effort.

This rescue was headed by Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest , China Rescue Dogs Paws Across the Ocean A Team of Rescues Working Together.
