Are Golden Retrievers Good Guard Dogs

Golden Retrievers Are Best Dog Ever #3 | How Smart Is Golden Retriever?

No. Due to their size and body build, Golden Retrievers often produce the illusion of a good guard dog. Because of their friendly demeanor, however, the Golden Retriever is far more likely to greet intruders with affectionate kisses and tail-wagging rather than barking or growling.

While it is certainly possible to train a retriever in the art of guarding, owners should be aware that this sort of training goes directly against the nature and personality of this particular dog breed. For this reason, owners who desire extra protection should consider more suitable breeds .

Does this mean that a Golden Retriever wont defend their family in times of need? No! In fact, retrievers are well-known for their active defense of owners when danger arises. Owners who expect their retrievers to actively guard their house when they are away , however, should not expect positive results.

This is largely due to the dogs natural responsiveness to its owners emotions. When the retriever senses fear from their owner, their protective instinct prompts the dog to guard their owner from danger . Without their family present, however, the Golden Retriever wont sense the natural fear expressed by their owner in times of an intrusion, thus prompting the dog to display its natural love and friendliness to would-be burglars .

Golden Retrievers are well known for their beautiful coats.

Are Golden Retrievers Smart How Smart Are They

Golden Retrievers have been branded as Americas favorite family dog and for a good reason. They are known for being incredibly friendly, loving, and undeniably loyal canine companions. He is known for his research into canine behavior and his determination that the smartest canine breeds can pick up new commands in less than five exposures and have an obedience percentage of about 95 percent.

Golden Retrievers are easy to train and can pick up on human emotions with little additional training. In fact, Golden Retrievers are so smart that their intelligence level matches that of a two-year-old human!

Are Golden Retrievers Mischievous

Golden retrievers are very smart and love to play.

Those are both good qualities until you as the owner dont want to play!

Heres a quick story about my golden retriever, Oliver.

It was easy to teach him the drop it command as a puppy.

He was very young when he learned that when were playing tug, or if he has something in his mouth, drop it means open your mouth and drop it.

However, hes also so smart that hes learned that stealing rags from the kitchen gets us to play his favorite game, which is keep away.

When he takes a rag from the kitchen and we ask him to drop it you can literally see the gears in his head spinning as he asks himself, Should I be obedient and drop it? Or should we continue to play my favorite game?

The combination of golden retrievers love of playing and their brains can sometimes drive you wild.

And its not just Oliver.

Corens Dog Intelligence Criteria

Stanley Coren requested the help of nearly 200 North American obedience trial judges to help him with his intelligence trials. He asked them to help assess and rank dog breeds based on the following criteria.

Corens dog intelligence trial criteria was based on two factors:

  • The number of repetitions necessary for the dog breed to learn a new command. Smarter dogs, like Golden Retrievers, required fewer repetitions to learn basic commands.
  • The success rate that a dog breed obeys a known command on the first attempt. Breeds with a high success rate were considered more intelligent as well.
  • Only dog breeds with a minimum of 100 responses were included in Corens final rankings. And as the third most popular dog breed in America, Golden Retrievers received an enormous number of responses. So, didnt have any problems qualifying.

In addition, only breeds that were recognized by the American and/or Canadian Kennel Club participated in the evaluations. In other words, no mixed breeds were included in Corens trials. Fortunately, Golden Retrievers are recognized by both clubs.
