9 MUST Have Accessories for a Golden Retriever Puppy

Kongs the best thing in the world to get some peace and quiet We are now the proud owners of 6 kongs, and once a week, I make a big batch of yogurt, pumpkin, and peanut butter all mixed together and stuff the kongs full. I will add in half the yogurt mixture, then add kibble, then top it off with more yogurt mixture. We then freeze them. Each frozen kong will take Coconut anywhere from 20-30 minutes to eat and she loves them!

You can also just stuff them with treats, or just peanut butter, or really any mixture of anything. I highly suggest freezing them, though.

Lickimats same idea as the Kong, but this time you spread it out onto a mat that has a bunch of grooves and edges, so when you put the yogurt, pumpkin, and peanut butter mixture into it and freeze it, it takes them a lot longer to get out of each crevice!! 30 minutes of silence thank you!

Bowls these bowls work great. They are a little on the small side, but perfect for puppies. Coconut still uses them We also place them on top of these cute bone shaped waterproof mat for spillage purposes.

Slow Feeding Bowl we had to transition Coconut to the slow feeding bowl because we would put her food down and literally 25 seconds later it was gone. I was literally SHOCKED the first time that happened and was like there is no way that is good for her enter this wonderful bowl. It makes it way more difficult for them to actually get to the food.

Golden Retriever Puppy Supplies: Crates

We highly recommend a wire crate. Though wire crates usually have a divider so that you can size the crate down, we recommend that you go ahead and purchase a 24 inch wire crate along with the correct size for your dog when he is grown. Most puppies can use the 24 inch crates for about 2 months after they are 8-10 weeks of age. It is during this 2 month period of time that youll need to move the crate around from room to room. It is also helpful to have a smaller crate when traveling.

In fact, for those families driving their puppy alone to the Atlanta airport , we recommend getting a 24 inch wire crate so that your puppy doesnt have to drive the 2 1/2 hour trip to Atlanta in a small airline carrier. Though youll probably have to leave your crate in Atlanta, the extra cost will make your trip much more pleasant. If you want this option with a Summer Brook puppy, you can have a small icrate shipped to our home address for you to pick up when you get here.

The best size crate for adult girls is a 36X24X27 inch wire crate. For an adult boy, use either a 42X28X30 or 36X24X27 inch wire crate. If you have the room, the larger size is better for boys, but dogs like to be cozy so even though a 36-inch crate might look small for a big boy, he will be happy in it if you dont have space for such a large crate as a 42 inch one.

We prefer wire crates in most cases because they give more ventilation and Golden Retrievers like it to be cool.

Collar, Leash, Harness, and Dog Tags

Although your pup may not be able to go on full neighborhood walks at a young age, its a good idea to get him used to the concept of wearing a collar, leash, and dog tags.

However, avoid retractable leashes whenever possible: Although they seem easier during walks, retractable leashes are actually dangerous, especially for young puppies who are still getting the hang of walking on a leash. Keep your puppy on a regular leash with a maximum of six feet of space between you both.

Snowy Pines recommends slip leads: Slip leads are what puppies are taught to walk on from a young age at Snowy Pines, since they give you as the walker more control over the puppy as he gets the hang of normal walks. You also dont have to worry about your puppy slipping out of their collars if they get frightened.

On your pups collar, the dog tags should state his name, home address, and phone number. You can also opt for an embroidered collar if your puppy seems bothered by the noise or extra weight of the dog tags. Many puppy owners choose embroidered collars since dog tags should be removed when the puppy is left alone as they can pose a hazard.

They Are Prone To Waxy Ears

Unfortunately, Golden Retrievers are prone to waxy ears. This tends to be a result of poor air circulation due to their long ears.

Although it is not always the case, waxy ears can be the symptom of a more serious problem, such as an infection or mites. If left untreated or if not treated correctly and consistently, ear problems can become chronic and affect the dog’s quality of life.

The most common cause of ear infections in Golden Retrievers is yeast. After swimming or bathing, take the time to dry your dog’s ears. Effort should also be made to keep ears clean. There are solutions available for purchase or that you can make at home that, in addition to cleaning and soothing your Golden Retriever’s ears, will also change the pH level, creating an environment yeast should not thrive in.

Be careful Goldens will eat almost anything that resembles food, regardless of whether or not it is good for them.

Must Have Accessories For A Golden Retriever Puppy

First of all congratulations on your new Golden Retriever Puppy raising him is gonna be a rollercoaster and you gonna love it. Its not easy raising a puppy, be it any breed, but having a few necessary things around will definitely help you.

In this article, we will go through various canine accessories and products you must have to take better care of your little furball.

Whats A Whelping Box And Why Should You Use It

MUST HAVE DOG PRODUCTS WITH TWO GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

First of all, a whelping box or also known as a nesting box is a place where you can place your dog who is in labor which eventually a place where she will deliver her puppies and raise them for about six weeks or so. Its actually the puppys first place where there is comfort and safety together with her mother.

However, its sometimes tricky to let your female dog get accustomed to a whelping box. Sometimes they will find some other place where they think its a much better place than your whelping box.

With regards to its design and structure, every nesting box should have four sides and have a bottom. Normally the measurements of the sides are approximately 12 to 18 inches tall, with an opening or an entrance at the front serving as the female dogs point of entry.

The standard whelping box normally has a pig rail or an inner rail around the structure that is about 4 to 6 inches above the bottom box. The importance of this is to prevent any accidents like pinning a newborn puppy or accidentally roll over her puppies.

Secondly, you should use a whelping box or a nesting box for your female golden retriever because its ideal protection for the mother dog and also for her puppies.

Its more secure and hassle-free so the mother wouldnt constantly catch her missing puppies while on the run. At least in an enclosed space, theres a boundary where the puppies wouldnt roam around freely but with only with restricted boundary.

They Are Family Members

As a family pet, especially with children, the breed has few equals, but Golden Retrievers are more than just a family pet they are loyal best friends and loving family members.

Although the breed is capable of living outdoors, Golden Retrievers were bred to work closely with humans and do the best living indoors as part of a family. At times, the breed’s desire to be with their family may even come across as needy. There are days my Golden does not leave my side. She will follow me from room to room and stay within arm’s reach regardless of what I am doing. In my experience, if you’re looking for your Golden, they are probably at your feet. Be careful they are a tripping hazard.

If you’ve ever seen the heartbreaking stare of a Golden Retriever watching its family leave on an outing, you’ll likely agree that this is not an independent breed that is happy to be left alone all the time.

Do You Still Want A Golden

We believe that it was important for you to know up front all the reasons that you might not want a Golden, so that you can make a well thought out decision that is best for your family and best for a prospective puppy. But we also know that a well-bred, well-trained Golden can be a joy for its lifetime and if this is the right breed for you, we are very happy to help you connect with reputable breeders. An Indoor/outdoor Shower Wand For When You Want To Wash All Your Golden’s Hard

Promising review: “I have three golden retrievers with A LOT of fur. This thing makes washing them so much easier. The pressure is awesome and rinses through their thick fur much faster than any other shower attachment Ive tried. I also love that it can be twisted to different settings or so the water stops running without shutting the water off each time. Would highly recommend.” Shannen Cobb

Meeting Another Dog: How To Introduce Your Puppy To A New Dog

Its important to socialise puppies when theyre still young to really make sure theyre at their friendliest and kindest with other dogs as adults. In humans or dogs worlds, everybody likes a friendly guy.

A good way to do this is by organising a visit from one of your friends dogs.

PRO TIP: The other dog should be friendly with puppies, and up to date with their vaccinations!

How to do it

  • With your friends dog on the lead, bring your puppy into your garden, or a friends garden if you dont have one. .
  • Sit quietly with your friend and their dog.
  • Let your puppy decide when they want to say hello to the other dog. At this stage they might be a bit wary, or they might be partying their heads off. Either is fine!
  • PRO TIP: Just remember theres no need to force your puppy to come say helloletting them take control of how they want the interaction to go will make them feel much more confident.
  • Give your puppy a treat while your friend gives their dog a treat gotta make it a nice experience for both doggies.
  • Repeat giving them treats around 5 times during the visit.
  • PRO TIP

We know that all you may want is to let loose in some off lead play. But lets not get ahead of ourselves, keep the adult dog on lead for now there will be plenty of time to play later on. Dont worry youre not being a Debbie Downer, youre just making sure your puppy is safe, and is able to go one step at a time!

How We Build This Programme: Push Drop Stick

Doing the same thing, at the same difficulty day in day out leads to boredom, frustration and ultimately poor performance when training your Golden Retriever. By using the Push Drop Stick method to increase difficulty gradually we can get better and faster results.

Essentially, you do the same thing 5 times and see if you get all 5 right:

    • You did? Great youve got yourself a treat and push onto the next level of difficulty.
    • If you get 3 or 4 right stick to the level where you are
    • Only 1 or 2 right? Lets drop back to a slightly easier level of difficulty.

Did The Breeder Request A Meeting And Interview

9 Things you MUST KNOW Before Getting a Golden Retriever!

A good breeder will ask you questions. In fact, theyll ask you lots of questions.

Passionate breeders want to be sure that their puppies are going to good homes and will be taken care of for years to come. Its not uncommon for them to request that you come to visit their facilities in person and conduct an interview so they can get to know you better.

    Some common questions may include:

    • Why do you want a dog?
    • Do you have the time to meet your puppys needs?
    • What is your daily work or school schedule like?
    • Who is responsible for this dogs care?

Additionally, visiting the facility in person will give you a good idea of how the breeder takes care of its dogs. A healthy kennel should be clean, have dog-friendly flooring, plenty of pens, fresh water, and staff members actively on the scene. There should also be plenty of ventilation, doors, and windows.

Snowy Pines facility is located on a 120-acre property in the heart of the Ozark Mountains. They encourage visitors at any time so that prospective families can see just how they operate, even behind closed doors.
