How Often You Should Feed Your Golden Puppy

Large Dog Agility – 2013 Purina® Incredible Dog Challenge® St. Petersburg

A puppy should remain with his littermates and mother until heâs eight weeks old.

Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. So youâll split the amounts suggested into each daily feeding at the same scheduled intervals every day.

Feeding at the same times every day will help the puppyâs ability to digest his food and for him to have a source of energy throughout the day.

From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding.

After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm.

Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines.

Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted.

Give him about 15 or 20 minutes to eat, then pick up any food thatâs left. Most puppies will learn to eat while the foodâs down.

If he misses a couple of meals and has no interest in the food, consult with your vet to determine whether anythingâs wrong.

Donât free-feed your golden retriever puppy. If you leave the food down all the time, heâll probably overeat and become overweight.

This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight.

How Much Fat To Feed Your Golden Retriever

The most important nutrients for dogs is quality protein and fat. For puppies, the Association of American Feed Control Officials recommends at least 22 percent protein for growing puppies and 18 percent protein for adult dogs. These are minimum recommendations youll find that most good quality dog food exceeds these recommendations.

Fat should comprise at least 8 percent of a Golden Retriever puppys diet while only 5% of an adults diet. Fat is important because it provides your dog with energy as well as adding a pleasant flavor to dog food. It also improves your dogs skin, coat, heart and brain function, especially fatty acids such as Omega-3 and Omega-6.

Golden Retrievers are a beautiful breed of dog- they have a lovely rich coat that ranges in color from light gold to a darker gold, hence their name. Their coat is dense and water-repellent, and their legs, tail, and chest are covered in feathering. Feeding your pooch quality food will help maintain their lustrous coat.

Different Dogs Different Diets

Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua!

Large breeds have special requirements, and its important that they be met. For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk.

Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility.

With proper nutrition, you can lessen your dogs chances of developing conditions such as arthritis and hip dysplasia.

What Is Fresh Dog Food

Freshit sounds great, but what does it actually mean? Theres no legal definition of fresh when it comes to dog food, but our experts say there are four common attributes most fresh foods share:

  • Fewer preservatives and additives. Most fresh dog food brands say their products have fewer ingredients that prolong shelf life, like preservatives and other additives.
  • Must be refrigerated or frozen. Because fresh foods have fewer preservatives, they must be stored in the refrigerator or freezertheyre not shelf-stable.
  • Minimal processing. Its common for other types of dog food to be processed to change its shape or texturethats how ingredients like chicken or sweet potato become pellets of dry kibble, for example. Fresh dog food, on the other hand, uses less processing, so you can often recognize the ingredients it includes, such as carrots or peas, just by looking at it.
  • Familiar ingredients. While the specific recipes will vary from one food to the next, fresh foods for dogs are typically made of ingredients you might find on your own dinner plate. Think of proteins like turkey or beef, and fruits and veggies like spinach and blueberries. Fresh foods usually contain at least one source of protein, along with fruits, vegetables and sometimes a source of carbohydrate, like rice or potatoes.
  • Adult Golden Retriever Nutrient Needs

Between the ages of 12 to 15 months a Golden Retriever will need to be transitioned to adult kibble. An adult Golden Retriever will need a high level of protein and healthy carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes or brown rice, to keep him energized.

Glucosamine and chondroitin should be found in the list of ingredients, as they support his bones and joints, and his is particularly important for larger breeds such as the Golden. All meat and fish meals are a great source of these ingredients, as are animal organs and cartilage.

It is particularly important, especially if he is a show pooch, for the Golden to have plenty of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, such as fish oils, flaxseed and folic acid to ensure that his skin is hydrated, which in turn promotes a healthy looking coat.

Feeding Amounts By The Puppys Age

The following amounts are suggested by many golden retriever breeders and other knowledgeable people:

    • Two-month-old puppy should be fed about 1 ½ cups per day
    • Three-month-old puppy should be fed about 2 cups per day
    • Four-month-old puppy should be fed about 2 ½ cups per day
    • Five-to-six-month-old puppy should be fed about 3 cups per day
    • Six-to-seven-month-old male puppy should be fed about 3 ½ to 4 cups per day
    • Eight-month-old puppy should be adjusted depending on his growth.

Throughout his first two years, while heâs growing, the amount of food you feed will have to be modified depending on his growth and growth spurts.

Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast.

Periodicallyeven weekly test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding.

Another gauge regarding when to increase his food allotment is if heâs finishing all of his kibble at two out of three meals. You can then increase the amount he eats.

You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed.

Donât give him any supplements unless your vet says to do so.

A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires.

Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs.

You donât want your pup to grow too fast and suffer health problems. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth.

Do Golden Retrievers Need Special Dog Food

According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, adult dogs require a minimum of 18% protein in their diet, and puppies need at least 22%. Protein provides the building blocks for strong muscles in puppies. And in adults, it supports lean muscle maintenance. For most dogs, higher protein content is a good thing.

Fat provides your dog with a concentrated source of energy in the form of calories. It should make up at least 8% of the diet for puppies and 5% for adult dogs. This is where your Golden Retrievers needs start to differ.

Small dog breeds have a faster metabolism and need a higher concentration of calories in their diet. For large breeds like the Golden Retriever, however, excess calories can lead to unhealthy weight gain. Obesity increases the risk for other issues like bone and joint problems. As such, Golden Retrievers need a protein-rich dog food with low-to-moderate fat and calorie content.
