Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy

13 Things You Need For Your New Golden Retriever Puppy

Training your golden retriever puppy is one of the best things you can do both for them and with them.

  • Itll help the two of you bond and communicate
  • It will give them confidence as you challenge them and they overcome those challenges
  • It will mentally wear them out
  • Itll help them learn whats appropriate and whats not, and everyone will be happier for it
  • Itll give them more freedom as you learn they can be trusted

Puppies are surprisingly smart and you can start training them as soon as you bring them home.

They have short attention spans and like to have fun, so short training sessions and training games work best.

Theres a lot that goes into training that we cant cover in this article, but you can read more about training your golden retriever puppy here.

P.S. A lot of people think that training is just obedience training, like sit and stay, but it also includes life skills like crate training, potty training, how to not jump on people or bite them, and how to not pull on the leash.

A Foldable Pool Because Goldens Love Chilling By The Pool During The Summer As Much As You Do

Promising review: “Very well made, durable, sturdy. Bottom does not get affected with dog’s incessant scratching, as dogs love to do in water. Perfect size and height for my 75-pound golden retriever. He loves to play and lie in it on summer days. Easily folds along the creases to put away. After one summer season, it is still like new. Happy with the product.” BBM

How To Make Sure Your Golden Has A Great Temperament

The Complete Guide To Raising A Golden Retriever Puppy Golden Hearts

Making sure your golden retriever puppy has a great temperament is important. As we said, some of this comes built in, but you also have to work on it. There are two major things you need to do.

As mentioned prior, dogs are often the product of their masters upbringing.

If you want to ensure your golden has that loveable personality, start socializing them at a young age. Dont be afraid to take them to the dog park and meet some new friends. Training is a must, and golden retrievers are usually eager to please.

It also helps to get a puppy from a reputable breeder, not from any pet store or puppy mill. At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we breed and raise our puppies with the love and attention they deserve.

What To Get For The House When Bringing Golden Retriever Puppy Home

First off, youre going to need to purchase a few of the essentials, namely food, a water bowl and a food bowl, a collar, a leash, an ID tag and a bed for it to sleep on, just to name a few. There is some controversy surrounding having a leash, leading to many owners choosing to have a harness instead because leashes have been found to harm the dogs neck if pulled on too much during the walk.

An ID tag might not sound essential, especially if you are planning on micro chipping your pooch, but in some states, it is required by law and its always a good idea to have your name and number listed just in case Rover decides to make a break for it.

A couple toiletries you should consider getting are shampoo, toothpaste and a toothbrush, a brush to keep their coat nice and smooth, and poop bags for the inevitable accidents on walks.

Finally, dont forget the all-important treats and toys. Your puppy will need a lot of stimulation so having a couple chew toys or balls will not only help with bonding, but will also spare your precious furniture from his attempt to alleviate boredom.

Create A Sleeping Area

Youll need to make sure you make a sleeping area for your dog. Even if your dog starts to prefer sleeping on the bed with you and you are okay with that, youll still want to give your dog its safe sleeping area thats all its own. Thats usually where a crate comes in handy.

If you purchase a crate, youll want to make sure its big enough for your golden retriever so it can stand up and turn around inside of the box.

Crates not only provide an excellent place to sleep but come in handy when crate training and potty training. Many owners also purchase dog beds to put inside the crates or to put on the floor for the dogs when they dont get to sleep in the bed with their owners.

To create a sleeping area for your dog, here are some products youll need:

  • #8 BeddingYoull want to make sure your puppy has a soft bed to sleep on at night. Its up to you if you wish to a puppy-sized one or a larger one that your dog will grow into later.
  • #9 Dog crateMany owners choose to crate train their puppies. If you want to do that, youll need to buy the right size crate. Its a good idea to purchase one that is big enough for your golden retriever when it is fully grown, and use dividers for now to alternate the size.

To Raising A Golden Retriever Puppy: Play

9 MUST Have Accessories for a Golden Retriever Puppy

So Ive already covered the fun things you can do with your Golden Retriever Puppy for exercise, but your pup will need some solo playtime as well. That is where some really great dog toys come in. This critter is on of our favorite toys for Golden Retriever Puppies.

Best Stuffed Toy

This stuffed dragon comes in a lot of colors and sizes. It is fairly sturdy so it can handle a lot of shaking and a little bit of tugging. Plus it is just really cute and will pose well with your pup for all sorts of photos.

Make sure to watch your puppy carefully. You may need to change types of toys as your puppy gets older. Some Goldens can be toy destroyers, and part of raising a Golden Retriever puppy is accepting that you may be cleaning up a lot of fluff from stuffed toys. Ripping up toys and scattering the remains is fine and lots of dogs find it fun. But if your puppy is eating his kills then you will need to switch to other types of toys. Many companies claim their toy is chew proof but there is no such thing. However if your puppy becomes a moderate chewer, here are two that my dogs enjoy.

Best Ball Toy

This ball is made of tough rubber and is a different texture than the ever ubiquitous tennis ball. My dogs can pop, skin and take apart a standard tennis ball in about 5 minutes, making it both a hazard and a waste of money. These Chuckit balls last a long time and my dogs dont seem to be able to pop or chew them.

Common Health Problems In Golden Retrievers

Like any purebred dog, Golden Retrievers may encounter some breed-related health problems throughout their lives. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions.

Golden Retrievers are amongst a group of breeds classed as Category Two by The Kennel Club. These are breeds of dog that have been highlighted as having points of concern visible features which, if exaggerated, might potentially affect the breed in the future and cause health and welfare concerns. For Golden Retrievers, this is because they can have short legs in proportion to their body and a tendency to become overweight.

Some of the conditions Golden Retrievers are more prone to developing include:

  • Ichthyosis a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair.
  • When To Buy A Larger Collar For A Golden Retriever

As a golden retriever owner, its important to know when to buy a larger collar for your pup. Golden retrievers are medium to large sized dogs, and their necks can range from 12 to 20 inches. They also have a thick coat of fur, which can make finding the right size collar tricky. Here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a collar for your golden retriever.

The Complete Guide To Raising A Golden Retriever Puppy Golden Hearts

Puppies, like children, need to understand boundaries and know the rules of the household. Training your Golden Retriever puppy is essential, he or she needs to understand what is good behavior and what is not. Don’t Miss: Dog Bed For Golden Retriever

If Youre A Couch Potato Then This Dog Is Not For You

Golden Retrievers have high energy levels and they need to burn this energy off. Give your dog one or two hours of exercise every day otherwise shell mess up your home. Theres plenty of activities you can do, as Goldens are great companions for walking, running, playing in the park, swimming, and even hiking.

Besides running, Golden Retrievers need mental stimulation to thrive. You can teach her obedience training by yourself, as these dogs are known to be among the most obedient breeds. Other stimulating activities where Golden Retrievers register great results are canine freestyle and agility training.

Golden Retrievers were bred to work, so they need to be active to stay happy. Furthermore, the lack of exercise will generate a series of medical problems, including obesity and other related issues, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or problems with ligaments and tendons.

Make A Plan And Stick To It

Before your golden retriever puppy arrives, build a routine and make a game plan for how you will handle situations. Puppies need a lot of care as they are learning, and knowing how you expect to handle accidents or missteps, such as accidental potty indoors, can help you remain strict but loving as you train your puppy.

On top of that, keeping a routine such as set food times, walk times, and play times can help your puppy get the ropes more quickly. They will learn approximately when it is time to do certain things and allow you to get work done as they make naps fit your schedule.

Golden Retrievers Have A Massive Appetite

Goldies have an insatiable appetite, which is why they are prone to obesity. Portion control is very important to this breed to prevent excessive weight gain.

Also, you should hide their food supply because this doggo is quite a clever one. They can steal treats if you leave them in the open or inside an unlocked cabinet.

A complete and balanced diet is also a must for Golden Retrievers. You literally have to invest a few more bucks to get high-quality food for this large breed. Otherwise, their coat will become dull, and their fur may fall off.

Additional Golden Retriever Puppy Supplies To Have At Your Home

What You Need To Know Before Getting a Puppy, Especially A Golden Retriever

In addition to the supplies that you need to bring with you to pick up your puppy, there are a few supplies that youll need right away at home. Whether you bring it to our home or not, a treat bag is important to continue the training.

We recommend getting a 24 inch crate, rather than sizing down a larger crate. Your puppy can use it until he is about 4 months old and these first few weeks at home are when the portability of a small crate can be a tremendous help. The cost of the smaller crate is minimal compared to the benefits of using a smaller crate during these house training weeks. Once your puppy outgrows this crate, he will be sufficiently house-trained to move into his adult-sized crate left in a more permanent location.

    Dog Bed

We have several different recommendations for dog beds discussed below. However, we most highly recommend the Kuranda bed. The Kuranda bed is a raised cot that Golden Retrievers especially love because it is cool. Weve spent hundreds of dollars on beds and our dogs prefer these raised cots more than any other. More details as to why is discussed below. In addition, if you are getting a Summer Brook puppy, we use the Kuranda bed for some of our training exercises. Therefore, this bed will make for a good transition for your puppy moving from our home to yours.
