The Beautiful Golden Retriever

bringing home my 8 week old golden retriever puppy! (first days)

This type of dog originated from Scotland, and is of medium build, making it the perfect pet for all sizes of homes. This type of dog was originally bred by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks in the late 19th century. He saw the potential in his dogs and encouraged the breeding of flat-coated retrievers to tweed water spaniels to create this golden-coloured type.

Other dog breeds have been interbred during these early years, until you see the well-recognized golden retriever we have today. It is a recognized registered breed in North America, and these types of dogs are often entered into dog shows. This breed is highly intelligent and easy to obedience train. In the past they have been used in hunting, while today are commonly trained as guide dogs.

What To Feed A Puppy When His Stomach Is Upset

An Imbalanced diet causes stomach upsets in puppies as well as adult dogs. Whenever you see them suffer from diarrhea, vomiting, or loose stool, you need to discard what youre feeding it and choose among the following things.

I used shredded chicken most of the time, as even suggested by the American Kennel Club. But you could also use:

  • Meshed boiled potatoes,
  • Probiotics, and
  • Chicken and plain rice.

These things help rejuvenate the gut ecosystem of the puppy. I usually make sure that my dog is eating a small amount of curd each day just so it stays away from these conditions.

But as you know, things could get worse with a dog. Not just food, but its types, toxicity levels, even stress and anxiety cause diarrhea in dogs.

Stomach upsets could also lead to dehydration. Ive talked about it above and the foods you could feed the type to treat it.

What If My Golden Retriever Puppy Wont Eat

There are many things that could cause a puppy to lose interest in their food, such as infections, pain, organ problems, or the way youre feeding them. Here are a few of the most common reasons why puppies stop eating as much as they should:

  • Stress: Your dog could be in a chaotic home, or perhaps he is being bullied by other pets in your home like the cat. Children can abuse pets as well.
  • Digestive upset or obstruction: They may eat food that they shouldnt.
  • Digestive infections: There are many viruses such as Parvo, intestinal worms, bacteria, etc.

Getting A Golden Retriever Puppy

Choosing to adopt or go through a breeder for your new golden retriever puppy is a personal choice that requires research. Thankfully, there are many resources out there to help you find a rescue or breeder that offers healthy, ethically-sourced golden retriever puppies.

Knowing what youre in for when you get a golden retriever puppy is an important step in being a responsible pet owner. Whether you find a responsible breeder or are planning on adopting, its up to you to be prepared for an energetic and friendly addition to your household.

What Do I Need To Train My Golden Retriever

Do you need some cuddles?

Good news is that in order to train a Golden Retriever puppy you wont need a huge bunch of equipment. But theres a bunch of other things youll need:

  • A treat pouch. Say bye to that sticky, meaty feeling in your fingertips.
  • A soft collar: Something that is comfortable around their neck, doesnt pull on their hair, and doesnt fall off easily.
  • A harness: One that doesnt pull or tighten on your puppy when they walk is fab. Golden Retrievers are strong so a harness will be a good friend when youre teaching them lead walking.
  • A 2 metre training lead: Long enough to give your Golden Retriever puppy space to sniff the flowers, but too long so they wander off into someones picnic.
  • A piece of non-slip vet bed or a soft mat: For a cosy bed, warm nights, and good dreams.
  • Treats: The more smelly, the better. Weve written more about the best training treats here.
  • Two identical toys: Great for swaps! The name says it allyour Golden Retriever puppy will love retrieving, so identical toys will be great for all the games we have in store for you in the Zigzag Puppy training app.
  • A soft grooming brush: That lustrous Golden Retriever coat will need some grooming especially those feathers on their legs.
  • A crate and playpen: Its optional, but youll love it. Trust.

How Often Should You Feed A Golden Retriever Puppy Conclusion

That was all about feeding your Golden Retriever puppy. Ive tried not to leave out anything because its the question of your dogs health.

As a mom to one, I feel your struggles. Start feeding it ground dog food 4 times a day at room temperature with multivitamins and 50 g of cerelac or forex. Two times should be dog food and two times cereal.

To spice things up, top off the meals with chopped apples, mashed bananas, and boiled potatoes. Avoid giving the puppy some foods that I mentioned, especially raw meat.

You can, however, feed it certain veggies and fruits. When the pups tummy gets a little disturbed, feed it curd or probiotics. And when it reaches its adult height, slowly transition from puppy food to adult food.

I hope Ive helped you.

How Much Water Should A Golden Retriever Puppy Drink

Golden Retrievers are known to be naturally, highly active dogs and because of this, they drink a lot of water. In general, Golden Retriever puppies require approximately one-half cup of water every two hours. You should observe your puppy to ensure that he is drinking the right amount of water.

It is a good thing if your Golden Retriever gets lots of exercise and if he likes to drink a lot of water after getting exercise. They are a breed that is expected to be engaged in physical activity daily, so this is not an issue.

Continued Training: Adolescent Golden Retrievers

After one year, your golden retriever is technically no longer a puppy. They remain in their adolescence from about 1-3 years old. Sometimes during this period, even after a puppy has been very successfully trained, adolescent dogs might regress in their training. Dogs, like humans, like to test their boundaries. The best way to set a boundaryis to keep setting it without wavering.

This training at this age is also important to follow in the event you adopt a golden retriever in their adolescence

They Were Born To Fetch

13 Things You Need For Your New Golden Retriever Puppy

I remember sitting on a footbridge one summer with my first Golden, Duke. I was dangling my feet over the side, and not surprisingly, my sandal fell off and dropped into the creek below. Before I even realized what had happened, Duke stood up, trotted down the stone steps, waded into the creek, collected my sandal, and brought it back to me. When our eyes met, it was clear that Duke and I were equally surprised by his actions. It’s just one of those moments where you realize, as retrievers, these dogs were born to fetch.

This natural retriever instinct is linked to the breed’s tendency to carry items in its mouth. This may be a harmless habit, such as picking up a toy and prancing about when they are excited, but it can also be a problematic chewing issue. In addition to mental and physical stimulation, proper obedience and plenty of toys should help combat chewing.

Few things make a Golden happier than a game of fetch.

Best Length And Width Of Leash

We use a 6 foot long 8 mm wide leashes for most situations. The 8 mm width is wide enough to be safe, but small enough to wad up in your hand when you need your leash to be smaller. We use these leashes with both puppies and adults.

For me, an 8 mm leash is always sufficient in width for me and my dogs. However, if your dog is a puller or if you have arthritis or other problems with your hands or shoulders, a thicker leash would be more comfortable in your hand. Check out the Mendota leashes.

However, there are a few situations where I prefer a shorter leash and if you dont need to be going back and forth between lengths, it is easier to just put the correct size on your dog to begin with.

For training loose leash walking, I like to use a 4 foot leash. For this training, I dont need the extra 2 feet. However, if working with puppies away from home on sit/stays and down/stays, I need the extra 2 feet that a 6-foot leash provides. If my plan is to do both heeling training and stay training away from home, Ill use a 6 feet leash and wad the leash up when I dont need the extra length.

If you plan on adjusting the length of your leash for various applications, make sure you get an 8 mm leash. A thicker leash can be a bit cumbersome when you wad it up in you hands to make it shorter.

For adult dogs, if you are 5 ft. 5 inches or shorter, a 12-inch leash is a good length. If you are taller, youll want a longer leash, either 18 or 24 inches.

Can You Feed Your Golden Retriever Puppy Raw Food

Some dog owners prefer to feed they are golden retrievers raw food as opposed to kibble. A diet that is raw means that you only give him raw bones, row organs, raw meats, as well as fruits and vegetables. Many consider this raw diet to be better than kibble.

In all truth, kibble may not be ideal for your Golden because dogs are carnivores who require high amounts of protein. Many of the kibble on the market has approximately 60% carbohydrates.

Dogs need more protein and fats for good nutrition. When dogs consume too much carbohydrates, they tend to have health problems from being overweight.

However, there are downsides to a raw diet because one must be careful about the way the food is prepared and stored.

You would need to think about the bacteria like salmonella and E Coli coming from the uncooked liver, meat, and eggs which can affect your dog and even be fatal if not handled properly. It can also cause issues with the pancreas if introduced too abruptly.

When your dog is on a raw diet, the amount of food you give him would need to be adjusted, as he may actually need to eat less. Many people who give dogs raw food only feed them once or twice per day.

Where Should Your Puppy Sleep The First Night

Do I like you? Do you want to be my friend? #KOYA #boyfriend # ...

We raise and train all of our service dog puppies to sleep in a crate beside our bed. Basically, our nightstands are wire dog crates.

For our Golden Retriever and Labrador Retriever puppies, we use a 36-inch Midwest Life Stages Dog Crate. The Midwest crates come with a wire divider that allows you to resize the crate as your puppy grows.

If youre Lab or Golden is a little larger you might need the 42-inch crate. We needed the 42-inch crate with Apache.

One essential item we put in the crate with our puppies on the first night is the Calmeroos Puppy Toy with Heartbeat and Heat Pack. This has helped many of our pups sleep through the first night without a peep.

When Should I Switch From Puppy Food To Regular Food You Ask

The clear sign of your puppy turning into an adult is its height, as noted by Blue Buffalo, which is also my favorite dog food brand. Anyways, that height is different for different breeds.

The following chart would guide you well.

Dog Breed Size
Giant Dogs Up to 2 years

The Golden Retriever puppies usually mature at the age of 10 to 12 months. Thats the age when you should start transitioning from puppy food to adult food.

Many owners neuter their dogs at around this age. Also, because of an increased tolerance and reduced growth rate, adults dont need as much calories per day as puppies do.

Vets cite this as reason for switching to adult food. It has low calories but more fiber. Perfect for an adult dog.

When youre switching the food, know that there will be instances of stomach upsets, mood swings, and a decreased appetite.

So, youve to do it quite carefully, as it seems.

Blue Buffalo suggests that you should gradually decrease the quantity of puppy food and increase that of the adult kibble for a week. That way, the chances of the dog running into gut issues may reduce.

There still will be something wrong. A little looseness in the stool and all. To counter that, add curd to the meals.

Or, better yet, buy a vet-recommended probiotic product and use that to keep the pups gut ecosystem healthy.

This is exactly how you change from one brand to another also.

How Do I Get My Golden Retriever To Calm Down

One of the best ways to help your golden retriever calm down is to provide them with plenty of exercise. A good game of fetch or a long walk will help burn off some of their excess energy and help them to focus.

You may also want to try some basic obedience training with your golden retriever. This can help them to learn to listen to your commands and can help to redirect their attention when they start to get too excited.

Finally, make sure that you are providing your golden retriever with plenty of opportunities to socialize. This can help them to learn how to interact with other dogs and people in a calm and relaxed manner.

Why Is My Golden Retriever Puppy So Crazy

Golden Retriever Puppy First Week Home – Professional Dog Training Tips

Many people ask why their golden retriever puppy is so crazy. The answer is simple: they are just puppies! Puppies are full of energy and need to burn off that energy somehow. The best way to do this is to provide your puppy with plenty of toys and playtime. A tired puppy is a good puppy.

If your puppy is still acting crazy after you have provided them with plenty of toys and playtime, then they may need more exercise. Take them on long walks or runs, or to a dog park where they can play with other dogs. If all else fails, you may need to consult a professional trainer to help you train your puppy.

How Much Is Too Much Or How Less Is Too Less

Ive met owners that start feeding their pups cerelac or farex in hopes of weaning them off. Thats a good idea only when you know that youre doing it right.

Feeding the dog those foods 4 times a day is seriously going to hurt it.

What happens is that your pup starts losing muscle mass and bone density because theyre not getting enough nutrition even though you think youre feeding it the recommended times of meals.

Im not saying that either of the human baby food isnt good for pups. They both do well, only if you supplement them with proper dog food and multivitamins.

Also, feeding them too much could cause sugar and milk poisoning.

So, youve got to follow a balanced diet to save the poor from all sorts of evils of dietary imbalances.

I could finish everything here but I have a way of taking things slowly and into definite categories, so you dont get confused and reconsider your decision to own a pup.
