What Good Breeders Prioritize

Reputable breeders breeding companion dogs have two priorities:

If a breeder seems to prioritize any other quality above that then they might not be what youre looking for.

Reputable breeders care a lot about their dogs so theyll be asking you a ton of questions.

To help further decide on whether or not a breeder is reputable, the next section covers a big list of questions for you to ask a breeder.

What You Should Expect To Pay For A Golden Retriever

The price of a golden retriever varies depending on where you live, what the dogs are bred for, and other factors.

Most golden retriever puppies go for $500-3,000.

If a puppy is close to either of those end ranges, youll definitely want to ask why.

For instance, why are the puppies $500?

Is it because the breeder is inexperienced and just trying to get started?

Are they skimping out on vet bills or feeding their dogs cheap food?

Or why are the puppies $3,000?

Is it because they come from champion bloodlines?

Is the breeder is experienced and takes their time to properly care for the mother, socialize and stimulate the puppies, feed them the best food, and take them to the best veterinarian?

Or is it because the breeder is a good salesman and can charge a premium for their puppies?

No matter what the price is, its a good idea to understand why the puppies are priced the way they are.

Questions To Ask About The Breeder Themselves

Why did you choose to breed golden retrievers?

You want a breeder that truly has a passion for the golden retriever breed.

How long have you been breeding golden retrievers?

At what age do you start to breed your dogs?

Goldens must be two years old to receive final clearances on their hips and elbows, so if a breeder tells you they start to breed their dogs before two years old, watch out.

Do you provide registration papers?

They should provide AKC registration papers for you.

Do you participate in any dog sport or activities?

Most good breeders are involved in something other than just breeding.

Their dogs participate in sports, shows, or are even therapy dogs.

Is there a contract when I buy the puppy?

There should be a contract that covers costs, refunds, responsibilities, etc.

Do you require the puppies to get spayed/neutered?

If they do require the pups to be spayed or neutered, this will be in the contract.

What happens in case something goes wrong?

See if theres some sort of health guarantee as part of the contract.

This is also a good time to feel them out and see if this has ever happened before.

Do you have any references I can talk to?

Good breeders will have previous happy customers.

History Of Golden Retriever’s Puppies For Sale

Contrary to the popular belief that Golden Retrievers are descendants of Russian sheepdogs, they were bred in the Scottish Highlands by one Lord Dudley Majoribanks of Tweedmouth. These dogs were bred over 50 years during the mid-1800s to create the “perfect gundog” that could handle the rugged terrain of the area and the stormy weather conditions. A cross between Majoribanks’ yellow retriever and the now-extinct Tweed water spaniel, the Golden Retriever, was formed.

The Golden Retriever made its grand appearance at the 1908 British Dog Show. The Kennel Club in England finally recognized the Golden Retriever as its distinct breed only three years later, in 1911. However, at this time, the breed was categorized as “retriever – yellow or golden.” It was not until 1920 that the breed was officially named Golden Retriever. Over time, these pups made their way to Canada and later America, where the American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1932. Their popularity has continued to soar over the years, as they have continued to hold their spot in the top 5 most popular dog breeds in various countries.

Pick A Puppy From A Litter Or Choose The Right Dog In A Shelter

Delaney

I believe that this aspect not as important as finding a reputable breeder or shelter. There are mainly two reasons for this. First, a puppy bought from a reputable breeder is far less likely to develop expensive health issues or significant behavioral problems, two of the main things people want to avoid. The second reason is that a reputable breeder or shelter will be able to guide you when choosing your pet by knowing their animals and making sure to understand your expectations and goals. In that case, they will give you the best possible advice.

To choose a dog from a litter or shelter, look for a healthy and shiny coat. You should be able to feel the dogs ribs but not to see them. Eyes, ears, and genitalia should be clean and not inflamed. Get the dogs attention to test sight and hearing. Finally, pick one that will match your level of energy.

Its okay to pick a laid-back dog or puppy if you mainly want a low-maintenance cuddling buddy. In the same idea, choose a high-energy puppy or dog if you have a very active lifestyle. Although energetic dogs will require a lot of daily exercise and activity and will most likely need more training, they will be the perfect companion to go on many adventures with you.

Once you have your dog, dont forget to get a dog license . Check our new dog owner guide to know everything you need to get ready to welcome a dog home in a few minutes. Its a 5-minute read packed with helpful information for future and new dog owners.

Aggie And Armani Our A Team

We have been growing out two males with the intention of keeping one of the two boys to carry on Armanis lineage in a future stud dog. We have now made our decision of which of the two boys we should keep for ourselves. This means that we have one male puppy ready for his forever home. Photos provided in the photo gallery below. This beautiful boy Argus is crate trained, sleeping through the night, been meeting lots of clients checking in for dog boarding, had a few trips to town for socialization, a few car rides, and has been entirely house raised from birth.

Reasons To Choose A Reputable Breeder

I touched on this in the intro, but here are five reasons to choose a reputable breeder:

  • Health is inherited. If you have two healthy parents , the puppies are likely to be healthy as well.
  • Temperament is inherited. Everything that was said about health also goes for temperament.
  • Inbreeding is a major problem with golden retrievers where dogs that are too closely related can produce unhealthy puppies. Responsible breeders will know and take steps to prevent this.
  • Socialization is important to raising healthy puppies and its the breeders job to socialize them at first.
  • If anything were to go wrong, you would want a breeder with integrity to help navigate the problems, whether that ends up in a refund, a replacement puppy, etc.
  • Exercising An Golden Retriever Dog To Buy

Golden Retriever Puppy First Week Home – Professional Dog Training Tips

Just as water and food are vital parts of every dog’s day-to-day life, exercise is just as important to the Golden Retriever. However, the amount of exercise your pet needs varies depending on their age puppies do not need nearly as much as adults. A good rule of thumb to follow is the “5-minute rule.” The rule states that your puppy has been alive for every month, they need no more than 5 minutes per month. So if your puppy is only four months old, they need no more than 20 minutes of exercise per day. When they are in their puppy stage, they can get their exercise from brisk walks or a few games of fetch.

In general, adult Golden Retrievers need at least one good hour of exercise per day. No two dogs are the same you may find that your dog can only handle 45 minutes of exercise, whereas another dog may need up to 2 hours of exercise every day. As your pet grows and you learn more about them, you will find out what works for them and what does not. If you are tired of playing fetch and going on brisk walks, try introducing a new exercise method for your dog. Some suggestions are hikes, swimming, or running.
