Sunscreen On Sunny Days
While the Golden may be the sunshine of your life, they still need protection from the actual sun. Light colored dogs are more prone to sun burn.
Just like humans, dogs can get skin cancer. Its important to apply a dog-safe sunscreen to the tips of the nose, around the eyes, ears and tummy. Ask your veterinarian for a good sunscreen recommendation.
English Cream Golden Retrievers Have A Lifespan Of 10
Many people think that English Cream goldens live longer than other types of goldens.
The lifespan of a golden retriever does not necessarily have to do with the color of the coat or the type of golden retriever.
The more important thing to consider if you want a golden retriever whos likely to have a long, happy life is to find a quality breeder that breeds healthy dogs.
Yes, you may find many English Cream golden retriever breeders breed healthy dogs, but you also may find other golden retriever breeders produce healthy pups as well.
Personality: Are English Cream Golden Retrievers More Mellow
Yes. Typically, English Cream Retrievers are calmer than their American counterparts, but that doesnt mean they have lower activity levels, especially as a young pup. But overall, theyre easier to train.
In general, Golden Retrievers are known for having that puppy-like trait throughout their life, but English Cream Goldens are said to mature faster, especially when a lot of time and attention is placed into training and socialization.
That doesnt mean they need less attention and love. No matter what type of Goldie it is, theyll always look for affection, like when it comes to scary things, like escalators:
All Golden Retrievers are kind, loving, and great with children. Theyre extremely affectionate and gentle. For these reasons, theyre known to be great therapy and service dogs.
These social pupper-flies are great with other dogs and cats even if introduced later in life. They are a very patient breed and tend to get along with all people and pets.
Unfortunately, their social nature makes them susceptible to social anxiety. Theyd rather always have someone with which to engage.
Like what we mentioned earlier, English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly trainable. Theyre intelligent, loyal, and are eager to please their owners.
Youll be able to quickly teach your pup commands like Sit, Stay, and Come. With positive reinforcement and a few treats, almost nothing is impossible with this breed.

How Much Exercise Do They Need
Golden Retrievers are energetic dogs who need plenty of exercise to help them stay in shape. An active lifestyle can also help prevent stress, frustration, and boredom, which can result in bad behaviors like chewing up your favorite shoes or damaging the furniture.
Your veterinarian can tell you how much exercise is right for your dog, but a good rule of thumb for Golden Retrievers is to get them moving for at least 30 minutes two times a day. That should tire out your four-legged friend. If its too hot for a walk, you can take your Golden Retriever for a swim. These dogs were bred to fetch birds from the water and tend to enjoy a nice dip in a lake or pool.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England
No, most English Cream goldens youll find in America are not from England.
Just like French fries are not from France.
All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.
Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:
- The Netherlands
So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?
According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.
And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.
So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, English Champions.
The English seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later were calling them English Cream Golden Retrievers.

Originating From The Serene And Picturesque Hills Of The Scottish Highlands The Golden Retriever Is The Very Epitome Of Loyalty And Affection
The first major breeder was Dudley Marjoribanks, the Baron of Tweedmouth, who created the golden retriever in the 19th century by crossing a yellow retriever with the now-extinct tweed water spaniel, plus a mix of the bloodhound and Irish Setter. He intended for the breed to be a superior hunting dog which could retrieve dead game from all kinds of rugged terrain on land or water. The technical term for this type of retriever or hunter is a gundog. Its distinguishing quality is the impeccable and lustrous double coat of orange, golden, or light-colored fur. According to the American Kennel Club, it is one of the most popular breeds in the country.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Smart
According to canine psychologist, Dr. Stanley Coren, and his book, The Intelligence of Dogs, golden retrievers are the fourth smartest breed, behind Border Collies , Poodles , and German Shepherds .
This is great because theyre easy to train and intuitive.
However, because theyre so smart they can be mischievous, especially if theyre not mentally stimulated.
In fact #12 we talked about how to mentally stimulate them, which included lots of training and puzzle toys.

The Blooming Popularity Of The Golden Retriever
The same, unfortunately, cant be said for Guisachan. The Golden Retrievers ancestral home changed hands many times over the ensuing decades, with much of its 20,000 acres eventually partitioned and sold off. The great house itself became an albatross, and in 1939, the roof was removed in order to lower the tax bill. A tangle of trees and underbrush began to grow where there were once drawing rooms and wine cellars.
In 2018, Friends of Guisachan , a non-profit group created to share information about the breeds birthplace, erected a life-size bronze state of a Golden Retriever in the Scottish village of Tomich, along the road to Guisachan. That same year, the group paid to clear the trees from the ruins, and began a campaign to stabilize what remains of the structure.
With its crumbling masonry and gaping window frames, Guisachan is a reminder that the monuments we humans build to the times in which we live often do not outlast us. Dogs, however, are somewhat more resilient. Like those wildflowers for which the first trio of Golden Retrievers were named, they can settle and thrive in unlikely places. And as their popularity blooms, they brighten their new landscapes, always carrying with them a whiff of the people and places that brought them into being.

Early Retriever Coats And Colors
In the early days retrievers were mostly black. Modern coat colors in retrievers often include a rich chocolate brown and various shades of gold or yellow.
But the browns and yellows are created by recessive genes and the default for our original retrievers was the dominant and at the time most popular, color black.
Retrievers were often simply classified by coat type so we had curly coated, wavy coated, and flat coated retrievers.
English Creams Have A Broader Head Than American
This is one of their many but rarely noticed differences from the other types of Goldens. They are known for their balanced head shape and also have a deep muzzle, rather than a straight one which is commonly seen in other types of retrievers. Based on the Kennel Clubs standards, the skull should be broad without looking like it is bulging.

Are English Cream Golden Retrievers Rare
They arent rare because an English Cream Golden Retriever can give birth to an average of 8 puppies in a litter.
Most people ask this because some breeders advertise that they have rare White Golden Retriever puppies for sale. This should be considered a scam because they arent actually white, but just lightly golden in color.
Words like platinum or white are marketing terms used to trick buyers into paying more. These terminologies are also frowned upon by the AKC and KC as any Golden Retriever color thats too light or dark is considered a fault.
What makes English Golden Retrievers expensive is their bloodline, so you can expect to pay a price of $1,000 to $3,000 for a puppy.
Also, keep in mind other costs associated with taking a puppy home for the first time.
There Are Three Types Of Golden Retrievers
While you might think all Golden Retrievers look very similar, the breed actually has three different colors — golden, light golden, and dark golden — as well as three different types — English, Canadian, and American. There are subtle differences between the types of Goldens, but they all fall under the same breed.
How do you know what type of Golden Retriever you’ve got? Check their build and coloring. Canadian and American Golden Retrievers tend to have the same build however, Canadians have a thinner coat than the Americans. English Golden Retrievers have a stockier build than the other types, and also tend to have a light golden to white color. To get an idea of what color coat your Golden Retriever puppy will have when it matures, take a look at its ears. The tip of the ears usually show what color the pup will be after they lose their puppy coat. No matter which type of Golden you have, they’ll have an even, enjoyable temperament. Goldens are renowned for their calm, playful, and friendly disposition.
