Lonely Golden Retriever Gets Kitten Best Friend And They Do Everything Together

Sometimes, our pets need another friend to hang out with them at home other than us. Then, they can keep each other company while we’re out all day for work, school, and other personal business that we have outside our house. To fulfill this, some owners tend to get another pet and introduce it to the family.

Golden Retriever And Stray Kitten Become Best Friends

The long running stereotype of dogs vs. cats would have us believe that these two furry companions of ours could never be friends with one another.

We’ve long been fed the tropes of the cold and calculating cats being mortal enemies of the loyal and loveable dogs.

They’re forever engaged in a rivalry of the ages, from shows like Tom and Jerry to Garfield and Otis.

It’s a theme that we’ve seen repeated through film, television, books and songs.

However in real life, this myth is well busted.

Sometimes your domestic dogs and cats are happy to cohabitate.

Other times however, they’re not just happy to live together but form deep and genuine relationships.

Introducing one protective golden retriever and her feline companion, a wee kitten.

The golden retriever goes nowhere without her little friend.

Carrying the kitten in her mouth, this doggo brings the kitten with her everywhere.

As both cats and dogs carry their young in their mouths by the scruffs of their necks, this is all to normal for the kitten. As happens with some breeds of cats, the kitten freezes entirely when gripped by her nape.

The kitten was a lost stray who now, in what looks like a rescue facility, has not only food and shelter, but true companionship.

Acting as Mom, the golden retriever even cleans the tiny cat.

She doesn’t quite have the grooming standards that most cat moms do, but it’s the effort that counts.

Usually mother cats can be a lot more tidy in their licking of their baby’s coats.

How To Introduce Your New Kitten To Your Dog

Golden Retriever and Kitten are Best Friends!

A house full of kittens and dogs can be one of the cutest and happiest places in the world. To achieve such a harmonious home, you want to introduce your kitten to your dog in the right way. Just as a bad first impression can have a lasting effect with people, the same can happen when introducing a cat to a dog.

Dogs and cats can become good friends, but it takes time. This is because they have very different body language styles that can lead to some mixed signals. A kitten’s attempt at play might be interpreted as aggression by your dog or vice versa.1 So be prepared to take every step slowly. It could take weeks or more before they’re calm and comfortable with each other. But the result is worth the effort.

Tiny Kitten Becomes Best Friends With Golden Retriever

Five years ago, a sweet little ginger kitten was rescued and brought home to a family with quite a large fur baby: a Golden Retriever named Keelo. With all the comical jokes, metaphors, and memes on how cats and dogs get along, it’s always heartwarming to witness large, gentle dogs extending nothing but love and gentleness to tiny, helpless kittens.

The kitten, which the family ended up naming Koda, was fortunate enough to have a first friend as sweet as Keelo. Golden Retrievers are generally cheerful, trustworthy dogs. Known to get along well with children and other animals, they’re always a delight to be around.

Being the older sibling, Keelo longs for uninterrupted naps. Unfortunately, Koda doesn’t make that possible. She’s always on his case, trying to wake him up, as if to convince him that it would be much more fun to play. As you watch the video, you’ll be surprised to see how quickly Koda has grown.

Introduce Your Golden And Your Cat Gradually

Friendships don’t happen overnight. They’re built gradually, even for pets. Forcing the dog and cat to like each other is not going to bring you much success. So, consider introducing your pets in this pattern:

Week 1

Let your cat and Golden Retriever hear and smell each other from far. You could bring a cloth with the smell of one to the other so that they get used to it.

Week 2

Allow the dog and cat to see each other. Ensure that there is a barrier between the two. The cat could be caged and the dog free, but leashed. Notice any attempt to bark, puff, or jump at each other and use the ‘No’ command to discourage them.

If hostility is not manifested from either side, reward with a treat, a hug, or a compliment. Do this daily for the entire week. And if it gets unpleasant for one pet, you can split it up into multiple short sessions.

Week 3

The face-to-face meeting day is here! Ensure your dog is leashed, and the cat has plenty of options to jump or crawl under should Golden decide to unleash the wolf in them. Make the cat feel secure with many escape routes.

Reinforce their efforts to befriend with a treat or compliment and use ‘leave it’ commands when attempts are made to jump on each other.

Week 4

Be vigilant. You will let your guard down when your cat and Golden are already friends. But at this later stage, total vigilance is a must whenever the two are loose and when they are feeding.

Goldens Are Good At Cuddling

Even though cats are not the kind of animal that likes being held all the time, they enjoy the friendliness of a warm cuddle. Who better than the friendly Golden, and especially when you, the owner, cannot be there to for your cat?

Best cuddle buds. My golden just passed out on the bed next to me. Love her and she doesnt move even when i drool all over her face through the night.

– Heraclitus33

And according to The Spruce Pets, the Golden Retriever is the number one dog breed for cuddling with. As energetic as Goldens can be, they know when to be gentle and docile. It doesn’t matter if you’re human, another dog or a cat.

Cats & Goldens: The Dynamic Duo

The friendly personality of Golden Retrievers suppresses their wolf-ancestry prey drive and allow them to become friends with the cat. These dogs were meant to be friends with all pets and humans .

Goldens will readily befriend cats if both are introduced to each other when young. Still, it’s always safer to introduce cats and Goldens gradually through a series of socialization training.

Because Golden Retrievers love cuddling, bark less, are easy to train, and readily get along with other animals, choosing one as your pet when you already have a cat is a wise choice.

So as far as dogs and cats go, there are few dog breeds more suitable for a home with a cat. As a matter of fact, there are much worst breeds you could have gone with.

Keep Them Separate For Their First Face

Their first meeting should be face-to-face but not in the same room. You’ll want to use a screen door or gate to separate them. Make sure your kitten can’t squeeze through the door or climb over it. Your dog and kitten need to be able to smell, hear, and see each other without touching each other. Just like you did with the closed door, start by feeding them from a distance and slowly move them closer to each other over time.

Introduce Them When They Are Both Young

Do you know the saying that you bend a tree when it is still young? It’s true with your pets too. If you introduce your Golden and your cat when they are a puppy and a kitten, you have a better chance of creating an inseparable bond.

Training your cat and your Golden to be friends when they are young has a high probability of success because neither has become ‘prejudiced’about the other.

What this means is that both your cat and your Golden are more likely to like each other if they have not had any unpleasant encounters with other animals.

If you are trying to train an adult Golden Retriever who has had negative experiences with cats to be friendly to your cat, it’s obviously going to be much harder. The same could be said for a cat who has narrowly survived a fierce chase from another dog.

Territorial Cats

It’s even better if you bring the two home at the same time. This way, no pet has “claimed”dominanceover the home yet. So, it’s unlikely there will be territorial aggression.

If that’s not possible, it’s better to bring the dog in first. The Golden Retriever is not a very territorial dog breed. However, cats can be very territorial– much more than dogs.

Most of the time, the cat will learn to tolerate others. But in some rarer cases, cats can be especially territorial without budging. They never adapt to living with other pets and never get along with them.

Will My Golden Chase The Cat

Once they learn to coexist, cats and Golden Retrievers can be inseparable friends. The dog will even protect and defend the feline should a neighbor’s dog charge after the cat.

However, there is a chance your Golden Retriever will chase the cat. Goldens are dogs, and all dogs have traces of the wolf ancestry. When it comes to prey-drive, few animals will top the wild wolf.

If you bring home your Golden Retriever and let him out of his crate while your cat is loose, you might just be looking for trouble. It’s unlikely that the dog will intentionallyhurt the cat, but a chase-down is a real possibility.

Plus, chasing the cat is a sign of a Golden Retriever that needs more exercise. Without at least an hour of exercise a day, Goldens can take out their boredom on the family cat.

I have 2 cats and while Kenzie likes to chase them, when she does catch them she is pretty gentle. I keep waiting for them to use their claws on her, but so far they haven’t.

– Jennifer

Also, do not forget that Golden Retrievers were bred for hunting roles. While technically the Golden was bred to retrieve game for hunters, they are still capable of instinctively chasing small animals, or their “prey.”

The good news is that there’s not a single aggressive bone in a Golden Retriever. They’re not chasing the cat to kill or harm. Instead, your Golden is probably chasing the cat for fun or entertainment.

The Fact That The Feline Was A Kitten When The Animals Were Introduced May Have Helped In Them Developing Their Close Bond

Golden Retrievers & Husky Meeting Their Best Friend’s ...

According to the AKC, dogs and cats have “behavioral differences,” which can lead to issues. They provided the example of how a dog wagging its tail might indicate playfulness, but a cat “swishing” its tail can be a sign that it’s irritated. On the site, they explain:

“Dogs that misread these signals may end up receiving a swipe at their nose by a bothered cat, and felines may learn to distrust dogs after getting chased around the block one too many times.”

Golden Retrievers Are Golden When It Comes To Forming Friendships With Others

Golden retrievers are considered to be one of the friendliest dog breeds in the world and it makes them perfect family dogs. These dogs usually have shiny, golden-brown coats and they can grow up to be large pooches. Their sociable trait makes it easy for them to bond with humans and other pets. They are also highly intelligent, strong, and obedient, which is a suitable quality for them as hunting dogs, drug-sniffing dogs, therapy, and even guide dogs.

Reward Efforts Of Getting Along And Punish Anti

Dog and cat training is generally about teaching behavior by rewarding when they follow instructions and punishing when they don’t. We do not need to say this, but hitting and other physical punishment is a complete nay!

Instead, reward expressions of friendship and punish when the kitten puffs and hisses at the Golden. We call this positive reinforcement and it works best with Golden Retrievers.

On the other hand, it may be a good idea if you want to seek the help of a professional dog trainer. Check this awesome video for extra tips on how to train your Golden to stay away from the cat.

It’s important to always keep in mind that, with a Golden, you always have the upper hand in training them to befriend cats because of their good-breed traits. Don’t be deterred if it takes a while.

Start Slowly With Supervised Visits

Now it’s time for supervised visits with both pets in the same room. These introductions need to be done slowly, and your dog should always be on a leash. Your kitten should have places to hide or climb to that are out of your dog’s way. These visits might take a few weeks or more before your pets are comfortable with each other.

Take your time. Start on opposite sides of a room, then slowly let them be closer. Some people opt to start the introductions with their dog in a crate before moving on to a leash.

Watch for signs of tense body language. If your pets are relaxed, see if you can distract them or if they stay focused on each other. Will your dog respond to your commands? Keep the visits short at first. Gradually make them longer, and let your pets be closer to each other as long as they act calmly. Reward them with treats each time, so they make positive associations with seeing each other.

Realistically, you might not ever leave your kitten and dog alone until your kitten is older, especially if your dog has a strong prey drive. This isn’t because anything’s wrong with your dog or your cat. The simple fact is that kittens play a lot, and this can sometimes trigger a dog’s prey drive. It’s better to err on the side of caution and take as long as you need. Eventually—especially once your kitten is a little older—your pets will be calm around each other. Over time, they could even become good friends.

It’s well known dogs and cats have a long pop-culture history of being anything but friends. There’s even the phrase “fight like cats and dogs.” But we know, for a fact, that cats and dogs can get along and even become best buddies.

Enter the purr-fect real-world example that shatters this longstanding stereotype. This trending TikTok video of a kitten meeting her dog sibling for the first time has pet lovers everywhere oohing and aahing!

Golden Retriever Becomes Best Friends With A Tiny Cat And The Two Are Inseparable

Dogs aren’t just man’s best friend. They are everybody’s best friends. There is no animal that is off-limits to dogs as they like to get friendly with whoever they meet.

One little cat ended up with the ultimate best friend after meeting a golden retriever named Samson.

The two have a wonderful bond – one that transcends species, and they met in quite an unusual way.

You see, Samson works as a medical response service dog. While he is good at his job, there is something that seems to elude him. Samson isn’t the best at making friends with other dogs. While he’s a sweet and gentle pup, he is a bit too shy around other dogs.

According to Healthy Happy News, his owner, Lea, explained that he’s not the best at relating with other dogs since he’s not sure how to be a dog himself. She said, “Even when he gets time off to play, he has a hard time understanding when he can just be a dog.”

While he couldn’t quite get the whole “being a dog” thing down, he did find that he related to cats. He made this discovery while on a family adventure.

Goldens Are Easy To Train

Owing to their friendly nature, Golden Retrievers are obedient and easily take directions and commands. They are also among the smartest dog breeds.

In fact, when it comes to obedience & working intelligence, Goldens are the 4th smartest dog breed in the world. This type of intelligence measures the ability of the dog to learn and follow commands.

As such, they will readily interpret the intention and desire of their owner or trainer. If their owner’s desire is understood as befriending the cat, then the Golden will do just that.

Keep Your Kitten In A Separate Room At First

You’re going to need to keep your pets separate so they can gradually get used to the smells and sounds of the other in a stress-free environment. Your kitten will need her own comfy room with a litter box, food, water, and a kitty bed.2 A Comfort Zone Calming Diffuser can help her feel safe and relaxed in her new room. This drug-free solution mimics a cat’s natural pheromones to help her feel calm and happy.

Start by feeding your kitten and dog at the same time, but in their own rooms with a closed door between them. Slowly move the dishes closer to the closed door that separates them.

After they’re calmly eating “near” each other, swap their scents by leaving a towel with your kitten’s scent in your dog’s room and vice versa. Every now and then, let your kitten roam around the house while your dog is confined to a room. This helps them get used to each other’s scents before they meet.
