Step 3 Now Draw The Back Of The Dog
Now that you’ve drawn the head and face of your drawing, the hardest part is behind you and you should have no trouble finishing this guide on how to draw a golden retriever!
To draw a back for your golden retriever, simply extend a curved line from the head going backward. It will curve sharply at the end as you can see in the reference picture.
Finally, you can extend a jagged line down from the left-hand side of the head for the neck of your golden retriever.
Adding Features With Simple Shapes
Now we will go in and draw the more detailed features of the dog. Even the smaller parts of a dog that appear complex can be loosely captured with a combination of shapes and lines. Let’s break down each feature into simple silhouettes while thinking about the end effect.
?Parts of the head
First, capture the shape of the jaw. Draw the dog’s snout roughly in the shape of a skewed rectangle, then add a line to separate the upper and lower parts. A golden retriever’s snout has sagging skin and an upturned mouth that gives the impression of a smile. It also features a sudden drop at the corners of the mouth. When viewed from the side, the snout should be divided by an S-shape in the lower part of the skewed rectangle.
When drawing the snout from the front, draw a gentle W-shaped line. In the middle of the line, draw another line connecting up to the nose. Make sure the corners of the mouth line arch out.
The golden retriever’s eyes are a little droopy, which also makes them look friendly and gentle. Draw the eyes in a triangle so that you can capture the droopy shape.
The ears attach to the back of the head and flop down towards the front. Try to capture the sagging appearance of the ears with triangles or squares that cover the sides of the dog’s face.
?Parts of the body
Once all of the body parts are in place, start rounding the straight lines and corners. The lifelike silhouette is now completed.
Step 7 Finish Off The Drawing With Some Final Details
In this step of our guide on how to draw a golden retriever, you can add some final details! You can use some short, curved lines throughout the golden retriever to give a look of fur on the body.
A golden retriever has a thick coat, so this will help to convey this! Before you move on, be sure to add any extra details you want for your image!
You could draw a beautiful background, draw in some toys for your golden retriever to play with or draw the body of the owner standing next to it.
How will you finish off your golden retriever drawing?
Step 4 Next Draw The Chest And First Leg
Continuing on for your golden retriever drawing, you can use a jagged line that curves down from the neck and then extends backward.
This will make it look nice and furry! Then, you can draw the first leg of your golden retriever. The front of the leg will be more straight, whereas the back of it will also have a jagged line for furriness.
Once you’re happy with how it looks, you’re ready for step 5!

Step 1 Dogs Head Shape Sketch
Before you draw anything else draw a vertical line that will be the middle of the dog’s head and draw a horizontal line intersecting with it. Try and place the horizontal line around the dog’s eyes. The point of the vertical line is to help make sure that both sides of the dog’s head are even and the horizontal line will later help you place other features such as the ears and eyes on the same level.
Start the head drawing by first sketching out the overall rough shape of the dog’s head . In this case the shape will be somewhat similar to an egg but with a less rounded bottom.

A few months ago I taught you how to draw a dog, but now we’re going to take it to the next level. I am going to teach you how to draw a realistic dog face. Now, I might not be able to teach you how to draw the pooch face from the featured picture above. However, I will try my best and I know you will too!
So, without further ado let’s dive right into and learn how to draw a dog face and impress all the kiddos around you!
How To Draw A Golden Retriever Step
Although there are three types of golden retrievers, they are all very similar. Thus, you don’t have to worry whether this simple golden retriever drawing will look like your pooch or not.
Friendly, active, loving, and cute, golden retrievers have many distinctive features that should be captured by the drawing. Goldens have broad heads, strong muzzles, medium to large dark eyes, and floppy ears. Although this may seem like a lot of details to draw, getting your dog’s features right is actually the easy part.
Most people think that getting the coat just right is the hardest part of any golden retriever puppy drawing. But, since you aren’t a professional artist, don’t worry about capturing the exact shade and color of your dog’s coat.
Things might still seem complicated at this point, but it doesn’t take a lot of steps to draw a detailed golden retriever. In fact, if you have your paper and pencil close at hand, we can move on to the first step.
How To Draw A Dog Face Tutorial
Now, I want to start off by saying that learning how to draw takes time. So please don’t be too harsh on yourself or too self-critical. You might not like your first few drawings, but it is very important that you don’t give up.
Take it as a kid, they love everything they draw, and that’s exactly the approach we need when learning a new skill. Rest assured that as days go by you will be happier and happier with your drawings.
Also, if the written tutorial is too complicated for you, there is a video you can tend to.
I will try to keep it basic enough so that even beginners can keep up, but at the same time, it will be quite detailed because we do want a realistic drawing of a dog’s face. The tutorial we’re going to use today is by the amazing artist from .
What you’ll need
The first thing you’ll need is a picture of the dog’s head you want to draw. You can use your dog’s photo or find one online.
- Sheet of folded paper to prevent smudging
- HB, 2B, and 6B graphite pencils
- Kneaded eraser
Now, if you’re a complete beginner you can simply use a piece of paper from your printer and any pencil and eraser. As you get better and improve your drawing you might want to upgrade the material you use.
Drawing a dog head
I will try to keep this as simple as possible and give you easy, short steps on how to draw a dog face.
You want both ears to align. So you’ll have to sketch a guideline from the first ear to locate the connection for the other ear.
Unique Characteristics Of Dogs And Finishing Touches
Now that the rough shape is drawn, we can go in and add detailed features. To draw the fur, it’s better to draw it in bunches to achieve the proper shape and expression rather than one hair at a time. Let’s add our finishing touches by thinking about what we want to emphasize in our image.
Golden retrievers have black lips noticeable at the crease leading to the nose and at the corners of the mouth. If the dog’s mouth is open, draw the lips along the edge of the lower jaw, as in the image below.
If the tongue is sticking out, it will cover the front teeth of the lower jaw. Having the canine teeth peek out from the sides of the tongue, makes the mouth appear more three-dimensional.
The nostrils look like commas.
A dog’s legs have a characteristic shape. The upper joints in dogs are located close to the torso.
The joints closest to the ground are the heels, and are the toes.
In contrast to the fur on its body, a golden retriever has short, prickly fur on the head. The areas that move a lot have wrinkle lines with noticeable fur. The eyebrow lines, nose muscles, and mouth area add to a dog’s expression.
The long fur on the body falls with gravity and adds movement to the pose. Visualize the bumps made on the skin under the fur, the hairline, and the direction in which it grows. In the case of a golden retriever, it has bushy hair around its neck, under its belly and down from its legs. Draw while keeping the dog’s contours in mind.
How To Draw Dogs
Everybody loves looking at cute animals.Dogs are especially cute because their body language can be very human-like and expressive.Let’s look at how to draw dogs, using a simple combination of shapes.
This time around, we’ll be using the ever-popular golden retriever as an example.
The golden retriever is a popular breed due to its large size, gentle nature, and loyalty. They have gentle eyes that make you smile, adorable droopy ears, and a rich coat of fur.
How To Draw A Golden Retrievers Mouth
To draw the mouth of the golden retriever’s mouth, you have to be a bit prominent.
- First, draw a curved line to make it as the line of the forehead. Draw two little circles as the eyes a bit downwards from the first curve.
- Now draw two curves in opposite directions beside the two eyes to make the nose of the dog. Add two triangular shaped ears from the end of the first curved line.
- Now it’s time to draw the mouth on the face. Draw a curved line that will start from the side of the ears and will end up almost at the middle portion of the forehead line.
- Again draw a small curve from the endpoint of it and join it with the ear of that side. Now draw a small line in between the big and small curve and it will demark the face.
- Draw the nose on the place a little upper of the mouth and the face of the golden retriever is complete.
Golden Retriever Line Drawing
Drawing a golden retriever is not a very hard task to do. You just need to know the outline shape of the dog and you can easily draw its line drawing. Just draw some curves and make the face at first, then add some zigzag lines to make the body and de-mark the fur on them. Now draw the legs and the tail to finish things off.
Step 2 Next Draw The Face For Your Golden Retriever
This second step of your golden retriever drawing is a bit tricky, so don’t be afraid to take it slow and closely!
The eyes will be drawn using some circular shapes with sharp corners on each side. You can then add a big black dot inside each one.
There will then be some short lines around each one, with a long curved line extending down from each one towards the nose.
Speaking of the nose, it will be big and quite rounded. The mouth is then divided into two main sections that come out from a center point on the nose.
Finally, you can add a big tongue dropping down from the mouth.
This can definitely sound very complicated, but if you look closely at the image and try your best you can definitely do it!
Next Draw The Hair Around The Eyes
Remember to always look closely at the reference photo and observe how the fur is arranged and growing. Start at the root of the hair and draw outward the way the fur grows. This gives you a sharp line at the end of the hairs and makes the hair look more natural.
You don’t need to use the same colors I use, these are just guidelines. I use Prismacolor pencils and if you use different pencils the colors will be slightly different, but you’ll still be able to succssfully draw this portrait.
I use a variety of colors to build up the layers; Cream, Rose Peach, Sienna Brown, Beige, Light Umber, Chocolate, Goldenrod, and Dark Brown.
Step 8 Now Finish Off Your Golden Retriever With Some Color
This has been a tricky drawing, so now you can relax with some fun coloring! The golden retriever gets its name from its wonderful golden coat, so that should make for a striking drawing!
You can also color in any extra elements such as a background that you added in the previous step.
Which art mediums will you choose for your golden retriever drawing? A nice bright medium such as acrylic paint or colored pens would be great to compliment this friendly dog!
You could also use something more muted like watercolors or colored pencils for a different approach that would also look beautiful.
We can’t wait to see what you choose!
Getting The Eyes Right
I usually always start with the eyes. If they are not right then the rest of the drawing won’t be either.
The reference photo shows reflections of the window and shadows in the eye. I want to try to convey this in my drawing, so I start by placing those highlights with White.
Then I start layering Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Light Umber, and Dark Brown into each eye using a sharp point and light pressure to build up the layers slowly. I outline the eye and draw the pupil with Black, and use Blue Slate in the highlights.
To finish the eye, I use Greyed Lavender, White, and 70% French Grey around the eye.
How Do You Draw A Golden Retriever Step By Step
To draw the image of a golden retriever, first of all, you need to know about the special features of the dog. This dog is medium-large in size. The built of the body is strong and it has a dense, water repellent wavy coat on its body. Mostly these dogs have origins in pedigree breeding and it is very popular in a large portion of the world. This is why there are several regional variations in it. You can see three subtypes of this dog in terms of the color of a coat, blonde, yellow, and golden.
To draw a golden retriever, you need to have some paper and a marker or pencil. Now put a dot on the left side of the paper so that you can have enough space to draw the rest of the body.
Drawing The Face & Ears
I continue drawing the hair by marking the lightest areas with White.
Then I begin building up layers with lighter colors such as Light Umber, Beige, Peach, Sand, and Goldenrod, working from light to dark. In the darker areas, I use Light Umber, Chocolate, and Dark brown.
I continue layering those colors, but if I see another color in the reference photo, I add it as I work.
In addition, I keep drawing hair-like strokes in the direction the fur grows.
I lay in the darkest areas in the ear with Sepia and Light Umber. I wash the whole ear with Sand using a light touch.
Next I use White in the highlighted areas of the ear to create depth. Then I use a wash of Beige before going over the ear again with layers of Sepia and Light Umber to create more shadows.
With each layer, I draw more details in the ear, repeating the same process with the colors mentioned until I am finished.
I also added Peach, Sienna Brown, Chocolate, Dark Brown, and Burnt Ochre.
When the ear is finished, I move to the other side of the face and ear using the same method and colors.
Continue checking the reference photo as you work, and look for the color placement and apply colors accordingly.

Drawing The Neck And Chest
The next area is the fluffy hair beneath the chin and ear. I draw in the area with Light Umber. This area will go fairly quickly as it doesn’t have the details that the face has, and I will use solvent to blend it later.
Using various colors as previously stated, I add several layers of color so I can use the solvent to blend them smoothly. You need 4 to 5 layers to get a smooth blend when using solvent.
I use a light touch and draw lines to show definition in the fur and shadows. Sometimes, I also use the pencil on its side, softly creating a wash over the whole area. I repeated this step until I got the drawing where I wanted it.
Once the main colors are in place, I continue adding more layers and details, still using pretty much the same colors throughout the piece.
For the solvent blend, I apply the solvent with a little brush and make sure to follow the direction of the hair with the brush. This softens the colors without completely blending them and makes them look more natural. The solvent also makes the colors look brighter.
The next step is adding fine hairs and highlights with Brush & Pencil Titanium White Mixture. I apply this with a small brush over the areas I blended with solvent. You can see this in this photo.

How To Draw A Dog
Please PAUSE the “How to Draw a Dog ” video after each step to draw at your own pace.
For the first few steps, don’t press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the first part of the golden retriever’s body. First draw four small marks for the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it’s easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circles don’t have to be perfect. They’re just guides.
If you do want perfect circles, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. The circle on the right should be smaller than the one on the left, and their edges should touch. Place the circle on the right slightly higher so that the top edges of both circles are at the same level.
Step 2: Draw another circle on the top, left side as a guide for the golden retriever’s head. Draw this circle the same way. First draw four marks that indicate the height and width, then connect the marks using curved lines. The edges of the circles should touch. This circle should be a bit smaller than the body circle on the right.
Step 3: Draw a curved horizontal line across the golden retriever’s head. This is a construction line that will help you place the dog’s facial features later. Add a curved vertical line on the top left side of the head for another construction line.
