The Genetic Profile Of Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis of Golden Retriever – Overabundance of dandruffs – ICT-A DNA test ANTAGENE

Ichthyosis is a genetic disease with autosomal recessive inheritance. The term autosomal means that the disease is not related to the sex of the animal: both males and females can be affected. Recessive means that it takes two mutations, one in each copy of the gene in question, for the animal to develop the disease.

Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers is caused by a mutation in the PNPLA1 gene, which is found on canine chromosome 12. The mutation is a deletion plus an insertion of DNA into the gene which produces a defective protein. The effect of this deficit in the skin cells is ichthyosis. Through studies of ichthyosis in the Golden Retriever, mutations in the same gene have been identified as one of the genetic defects responsible for ichthyosis in humans.

Ichthyosis In Golden Retrievers

Several breeds of dog, notably the Golden Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier and Bulldog, can be affected by excessive flaking of the skin.  This is present from birth, but may be very mild, so is not noticed until later in life.  The belly may also have darkly pigmented, dry skin.  It does not tend to be itchy unless there is also infection present with bacteria and yeast.  The changes in the skin make it easier for infections to take hold.  Owners typically notice large flakes of skin present in the fur when brushing their dog, or on the floor in areas where they spend time.  Golden Retrievers typically have a very mild form of this disease, whereas other breeds can be more badly affected.

Flexible Reimbursements And Deductibles

With Healthy Paws, you can customize your reimbursement percentage and deductibles as per your financial requirements. Once youve paid the chosen deductible, $100, $250, or $500, the insurance company will pay your pre-selected reimbursement percentage of the actual veterinary bill 70%, 80%, or 90%.

A higher reimbursement percentage or a lower deductible would mean youll pay as a larger amount as the monthly premium. With a 70% reimbursement and $500 deductible, the monthly starting premium for your golden retriever would be $32.83.

The model is quite simple. You can take your dog to the vet, either pay upfront and then claim the amount from Healthy Paws as reimbursement or contact Healthy Paws and ask them to pay the vet directly.

How Do I Make My Golden Retriever Healthy

Regular Veterinary

The Golden Retrievers can be a wonderful, loving and affectionate dog. Because they are purebred, they are more prone to inheritable diseases. These can cause them to live a shorter life span and have a lower quality of their lives. Regular veterinary treatment can prevent or treat many genetic disorders. Preventive measures are often more cost-effective and easier than treatments. Your Goldie can have a happy and healthy existence by getting regular veterinary attention.

Healthy Eating Habits

Lifestyle choices, such as healthy eating habits and regular exercise, are important for your pups happiness in the long-term. Your veterinarian may recommend that your Golden Retriever puppy be fed a high-breed growth food. This can increase their ability to grow and help prevent hip dysplasia.

Controlled Diet

According to the Veterinary Centers of America Golden Retrievers are much more likely than other dogs to gain excess weight. Because of their long hair, Golden Retrievers should be monitored closely to check if they have gained weight. This can be accomplished by paying close attention to your Goldens overall health and routine observation by your veterinarian.

Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers The Skin Vet

Ichthyosis is a very rare skin condition in dogs that is the result of a recessive genetic mutation. The mutation prevents the outer layer of skin from developing properly. Affected skin is rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair. The term ichthyosis comes from the Greek word for fish, as the skin of these dogs resembles fish scales. In addition to the flakes and scales on the body, there may be areas of thickened skin with increased pigment, as well as thickening of the foot pads.

Breeds that have been recognized with ichthyosis include:

  • West Highland White Terriers

Ichthyosis Golden Retriever Care And Prevention

Ichthyosis is a lifelong skin disorder. Though a cure has yet to be discovered, care and prevention are simple and achievable. Owners or breeders of Golden Retrievers with Ichthyosis should have extraordinary patience since this condition may come and go.  Regular vet visitations are also a must to ensure and maintain the quality of the dogs life.

Prevention as they say is always better than cure. As soon as Golden Retrievers are ready to mate, responsible owners or breeders can always avoid the risk of Ichthyosis by screening their Goldens using Golden Retriever Ichthyosis DNA test. This ensures the future litters are free from this disease.

How Does My Pets Age Affect Pet Insurance

Older pets are typically more expensive to insure.

As your pet ages, theyre more likely to suffer the diseases and injuries that are a part of getting old and insurers will charge more to reflect this increased risk.

The exception is puppies and kittens animals under one year old are slightly more expensive to insure because they tend to be more accident prone and at risk of injury at this age.

Insurance for older pets frequently has a co-payment applied. This is where youre asked to pay a percentage of your animals treatment costs and the insurer pays the rest. Co-payments are common in cats from around the age of 10 years and dogs from around eight.

Unlike most dog diseases, Ichthyosis has no cure at this time, however there are some treatments that can help manage the condition. Neonatal ichthyosis and sclerosing cholangitis syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by scalp hypertrichosis, scarring alopecia, ichthyosis, and sclerosing cholangitis.172 Mutations in claudinâ¯1, a tight junction protein, are known to be causative .173 The abnormal expression of the related protein claudin 2 in patients with tight junction protein 2 deficiency has been linked to mechanisms of cholestasis.139 The relationship between structural protein mutations and clinical manifestations underscores the importance of tight junction proteins in appropriate bile secretion and emphasizes the role that disruption of structural components plays in hereditary cholestasis.

Clinical Signs And Diagnoses Of Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis is characterized by dry, thickened, scaly skin that forms plaques of different sizes. The plaques may become whitish or blackish in colour during the disease process. The skin is rough to the touch. Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis will have these patches on the skin, especially on the stomach and chest.

Dogs with the disease will begin to show clinical signs between a month to a year and a half of age. In most cases, ichthyosis will be present for the entire life of the dog. The plaques on the dogs skin are also a gateway for many microorganisms such as bacteria and parasites. In the clinic, the veterinarian can do a skin biopsy and a histological examination. In addition, he can check for the presence of parasites by scraping the affected area.

Two breeds often associated with the inherited skin condition of Ichthyosis are golden retrievers and American bulldogs. So, you could say that those two breeds suffer more from dog dandruff than others.

    Unconfirmed Primary Disorders Of Cornification

    Vitamin A responsive dermatosis

This disorder is most commonly seen in adult Cocker spaniels although cases are reported in Labrador retrievers, miniature schnauzers and Gordon setters. Clinical lesions consist of hyperkeratotic plaques with follicular plugging and follicular casts on the ventral and lateral chest and abdomen. Affected dogs may have greasy haircoats with ceruminous otitis. In the authorâs opinion, this disorder has unique histologic features; however, the patients often have other conditions , which confuses the pathogenesis of the cornification defect . The diagnosis is achieved by a skin biopsy analysis and response to vitamin A supplementation. The histologic features are marked orthokeratotic hyperkeratosis of the follicular ostea, which is more severe than at the epidermal surface. The standard of vitamin A dose for a Cocker spaniel is 10,000 IU/day or 500â800 IU/kg/day. A clinical response is typically seen in 3 to 8 weeks and dogs may require lifelong therapy.

Almost All Good Breeders Incorporate Ichthyosis Testing In Their Programs

Topical polyhydroxy acid treatment for autosomal recessive ...

As testing has become more prevalent over the past 8-10 years, more and more breeders are slowly weeding it out of their lines. Currently my advice for those looking for a Golden Retriever puppy is to only look at breeders that test for it and only from breedings where at least one parent is clear.

As recently as sever or eight years ago, it was difficult to find such breedings. Today, most good breeders are including Ichthyosis as part of their normal testing protocol.

What Type Of Insurance Is Best For Golden Retrievers

When deciding which insurance is best for your Golden Retriever, its important to identify how each policy works in correlation with your dogs health requirements.

A maximum benefit policy is well suited to the Golden Retriever breed. With this policy, there is no time limit, it is more affordable than a lifetime policy, and you can claim more than once for the same condition, something which is great for your Golden Retriever as they are prone to many ongoing health issues. However, it is vital to understand that once the financial limit in this policy has been reached for each condition, you will have to pay for the rest of the treatment yourself.

If this does not appeal to you, then a lifetime policy may be worth an investment. It has all of the same benefits as a maximum benefit policy but your financial limit for each condition resets every year the policy is renewed. A lifetime policy has more benefits, however, they are often the most expensive option.

Ichthyosis Will Not Affect Summer Brook Puppies

However, starting in 2018, we had bred it out of most of our dogs and had mostly clear dogs with a few exceptions that were carriers. These carriers will never be bred to anything except a clear. Because Ichthyosis is carried on a recessive gene, there is no chance of a puppy being affected as long as at least one parent is clear. All of our breedings involve a clear parent.

We have had two dogs with an affected DNA diagnosis in the past. Neither of these two past Summer Brook affected dogs had symptoms that anyone except for me was aware of.

Since my experience with Ichthyosis was insignificant and because statistics from ichthyosis indicated that an affected diagnosis didnt necessarily mean a problem, I was hesitant to place much importance on the test. However, since then, I have talked to many breeders who know of dogs with significant issues. Though these issues dont cause problems for the dog himself, the flaking can be a major inconvenience for the families of indoor dogs. All Summer Brook puppies are inside companions. Therefore, we dont want to risk causing families to deal with black flakes all over their home.

My Golden Retriever Smells Like Fish

If you often see your Golden Retriever licking or scratching his anal area and you notice a fishy smell, then your fur buddy might have anal glands secretion. Anal glands have sweat glands that normally secrete a fishy-smelling chemical that serves as a territory marker when they poop. This anal glands secretion gives out information to other dogs. When Golden Retrievers gets scared they normally have Anal glands secretion in small amounts. However, in some cases, the anal glands become impacted due to soft stool or they have abnormal glands resulting in inflammation which can only be manually vacated by a vet. In serious cases, the anal glands become infected which sometimes signal anal glands tumor.
