How Often To Bathe Your Golden Retriever 5 Tips No One Tells You

    Grooming

Animals in the wild know how to clean themselves very well, and while this is somehow still true with dogs, they do need to take baths every now and then – and Goldens are not an exception.

    However, due to their unique coats, bathing a golden retriever is more than just hosing them down. But we need to first answer an important question;

How often do you need to bathe your Golden Retriever? Golden Retrievers should be bathed only every 6-8 weeks or when needed. Bathing them too often could cause serious harm to their double coat. Daily brushing and regular grooming are crucial to keeping their coats clean and healthy.

Some golden retrievers give their pups baths every couple of weeks, but this is just too often for me, especially in winter, when it’s cold and giving your dog a bath can do them more harm than good.

Dogs are often good at keeping themselves clean, so the bath’s main job is to clean their coats.

Now that we have this out of the way, let’s really dig deep into the topic, because I think there’s more to the discussion than just telling you to not over-bathe your golden retriever to not ruin their beautiful coats because you probably already know that.

Instead, let’s do something different – like answer those questions you have right now and don’t want to ask.

What Type Of Shampoo Should I Use To Wash My Golden Retriever

According to many canine experts, it’s not recommended to wash your dog using dish soap or human shampoo. This will most definitely strip your dog of its natural oils. Plus, shampoo made for humans is too acidic for regular use on a Golden Retrievers hair and skin.

The best shampoo to use is one that’s specially formulated for dogs. It’s recommended that you use a highly-rated oatmeal shampoo like at amazon.com to help in the nourishment of their coats. It’s organic, soap-free, and contains vitamin E and Aloe Vera to naturally soothe and moisturize sensitive or dry skin.

While using this shampoo, you should wash your pup from front to back, gently scrubbing your dog’s fur to get the dirt that’s attached to the undercoat.

When drying your Golden Retriever you can choose to use an old dog towel, but many people choose to use a blow dryer on their dog in order to make sure that all their fur is dry. A double-coated dog, like a Golden Retriever, can stay wet for hours, even after being towel dried so a hair dryer can really speed up this process.

A pet-friendly hair dryer like this on amazon.com, can also help with regular grooming. It’s temperature controlled so it won’t get too hot for your pooch.

Golden Retriever Grooming: How To Bathe Your Golden Retriever

You will always want to keep the beautiful golden coat of your dog shiny and healthy looking. This can be achieved by giving him a regular bath. This is part of Golden Retriever grooming. Following these simple steps on how to bathe your Golden Retriever will help keep your dog well groomed and healthy.

The PreparationBrushingBefore bathing your dog as part of your Retriever grooming process, brush your dog’s coat gently and comb out all tangles and knots. Skipping this process will tighten the tangles and knots as it gets wet.

Bathing Area & ToolsAlways prepare things you might need on hand before proceeding with the next step. Ensure that you place them within your reach for easy access as you work on your dog’s bath.Your dog may enjoy getting washed outside the house but the water might be too cold for him. A dog tub or your bath tub is a better option when giving bath inside the house. Use dog shampoo for dog baths. Medicated shampoos are recommended if your Retriever has fleas and psoriasis. Conditioner helps prevent tangle hair on your dog. Let it sit in for few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. A towel will make drying easy.

Meeting Another Dog: How To Introduce Your Puppy To A New Dog

    Golden Retriever Puppy

It’s important to socialise puppies when they’re still young to really make sure they’re at their friendliest and kindest with other dogs as adults. In humans’ or dogs’ worlds, everybody likes a friendly guy.

A good way to do this is by organising a visit from one of your friend’s dogs.

PRO TIP: The other dog should be friendly with puppies, and up to date with their vaccinations!

    How to do it

  • With your friend’s dog on the lead, bring your puppy into your garden, or a friend’s garden if you don’t have one. .
  • Sit quietly with your friend and their dog.
  • Let your puppy decide when they want to say hello to the other dog. At this stage they might be a bit wary, or they might be partying their heads off. Either is fine!
  • PRO TIP: Just remember there’s no need to force your puppy to come say hello…letting them take control of how they want the interaction to go will make them feel much more confident.
  • Give your puppy a treat while your friend gives their dog a treat – gotta make it a nice experience for both doggies.
  • Repeat giving them treats around 5 times during the visit.
  • PRO TIP

We know that all you may want is to let loose in some off lead play. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, keep the adult dog on lead for now; there will be plenty of time to play later on. Don’t worry you’re not being a Debbie Downer, you’re just making sure your puppy is safe, and is able to go one step at a time!

Taking Your Golden Retrievers Hair Length Into Consideration

Did you know: the shorter your Golden Retrievers hair is the less often you have to bathe them? Although this may be a fun fact, it’s not recommended to cut your dog’s hair short. Some people even go so far as to shave their Goldens!

This, however, is not recommended! When you shave a Golden Retriever you are exposing their skin and undercoat to the harmful environmental elements around them, including the sun and temperature extremes. Shaving a Golden Retriever can not only eliminate the dog’s ability to regulate their body temperature, it can also permanently damage their coat.

It should be noted that combing your dog often is actually more beneficial for your dogs skin and coat than it is to bathe them. Brushing your dog daily or weekly is not only encouraged, it’s recommended.

Regularly brushing your Goldens fur will go a long way toward a healthy coat that’s free of tangles and parasites.

Bonus Tips To Make Bathing Your Golden Retriever Easier

The Golden Retriever: A Guide for Owners

Tip #1: Introduce your golden retriever to the bath equipment prior to bathtime

Tip #2: Exercise your golden before bathtime

If your golden is full of energy, bath time will be much harder.

Play some games or exercise them beforehand to get some energy out so they’ll be more relaxed in the tub.

Tip #3: Give lots of treats throughout the whole process

And if they enjoy it, it’ll be much easier for you.

Tip #4: Place a bath mat in the tub

If you bathe them in a tub, placing a rubber bath mat on the floor will help them get some traction and not slip and slide all over the place.

Step 2: Brush Out Any Dirt Of Debris From Your Dogs Fur

Especially dogs who have found mud puddles to play in, the mud or dirt could cake under the fur, which could cause mats or skin infections.

Brushing a dog before a bath also helps to break up tangles that may hold dirt in that could cause issues afterward.

Starting from the top and front, by the back of the neck, work your way back towards the tail and down towards the belly. This will help to remove dirt and debris that might otherwise end up in your tub or down your drain.

Taking the extra 5 or 10 minutes needed to brush your dog before his bath can also help him to prepare mentally for the whole bathing process, which could help it go more smoothly as your dog knows what to expect next. Follow the same steps each time will help your dog be prepared as well.

How Often Should You Bathe Your Golden Retriever Puppy

One of the most frequent questions you’ll ask as a dog owner is how often you should bathe your pet. Every week? Once a month? How often is too often? The truth is, there is no perfect answer, and the frequency with which you need to bathe your golden retriever is based on several factors. When it comes to bathing, it’s crucial not to overdo it or neglect the chore unduly. Read on to discover what our trainers at Golden Meadows Retrievers recommend.

Factors To Consider When Bathing Your Golden Retriever

Golden Retrievers have a double coat of fur which is common in water dogs. The natural oils found on their fur serve as water-repellant and dirt resistant. To keep the oils spread evenly, you will need to brush your dog’s hair. This will also prevent tangling and matting.

    Nevertheless, bathing your Golden Retriever is still important. The frequency of the baths will depend on a number of lifestyle and environmental factors. They include;

    • The amount of time spent outside the house. Mostly, a dog that spends a lot of time indoors gets dirty less as compared to those that roam outside throughout.
    • The frequency of swimming. Dogs are built for the wild life and they are capable of taking a dip in nearby water bodies. Frequent swimming may make a dog smell and dirty. This is well evidenced if a dog likes to swim in an algae-filled pond and dirty water bodies.
    • The rural and urban environment. Often, dogs in rural settings get dirtier faster than city dogs because they are exposed to the outdoors more often.
    • Parasite issues in the local area. If there is a parasite problem in your area, you will be forced to increase the frequency of baths.

How often do you wash your hair? Odds are that you wash them at least twice or thrice in a week. This is important to keep your hair healthy and clean because they are exposed to dirt and other elements. Your beloved Golden Retriever has a lot more hair than you do and they are not just always exposed, but also frequently come in contact with grass, dirt, and other surfaces. So, it is obvious that your Golden Retriever needs a bath to keep it looking at its best. However, the bathing schedule of dogs is different from humans. In this post, we will tell you how often and how to bathe a Golden Retriever.

Where Is The Best Place To Bath Your Golden Retriever

Where to should you bath your Golden? It is an important question because if you do it in the house or apartment, you could end up with wet paw prints racing through the house and on the furniture.

Maybe you already have your Golden accustomed to baths and you are not worried about her bolting for another location.

If that is the case, then great job. Keep it up.

On the other hand, I know that if my dog gets out and runs through the house leaving behind her a trail of soap suds and dirty paw prints, I know how much trouble I will be in.

I would rather not risk it. So, I simply set up somewhere that, if my dog does break loose, I don’t have to worry about what my wife is thinking.

There are two places that I like to go.

The first one is an actual doggy wash near my home. This one might be the best because there are leashes that keep her where I need her in order to vacuum out her hair.

If you can’t get to an official doggy wash, then try your backyard with a hose, or, better yet, a swimming pool

This will keep your dog cool in the summer months. Additionally, when she gets used to the pool, she will be easier to bath.

Starting Bath Times With Your Golden Retriever Young

If you get your golden as a puppy, it is best to get them used to bathing rather than trying to teach an adult to tolerate it.

Even if you are just letting your puppy play in the bathtub, this still helps them to associate the tub with positive things rather than negative.

Trust me, if your dog starts to associate the tub with negative experiences, you will have a huge fight on your hands.

Puppies are a lot easier to train than adult dogs, so starting your training on a puppy is best. The younger, the better when training a puppy, but do not bath dogs younger than 8 weeks of age unless it is absolutely necessary, such as to treat for fleas or they are severely dirty.

The Best Water Temperature for Bathing a Puppy

Since a dog’s body temperature is higher than a human’s, they will feel the cold faster than we do. For this reason, I have always found it best to use warmer water for them, such as you would use with an infant human.

Puppies, like any baby, can have body temperature dropped too low by being in too cold of the water. For this reason temperatures around 75 to 80F are appropriate.

How Often Should I Bathe My Golden Retriever And Why

We wash our hair daily or at least 4 to 5 times week, the reason for that is the excessive dirt and oil in our head and the body as well. We wash our body to feel clean and fresh if we don’t wash up for 3 to 4 days we smell like s***. Yeah, that’s true if you are living in a moderate weather region, if it is colder or snowfall season you are good to go for maximum four to five days but not more than that. Bathing has excellent levels of benefits to the body as well as the mind.

Same is with your Golden Retriever, your dog has way more hair than you do, and those big long dual coated hair are always exposed to the outside environment. The dog body significantly gets in contact with ground, mud and other surfaces. This way your golden retriever gets a whole lot dirty even if he doesn’t look that dirty to you. The golden retrievers are very sensitive dogs, they love to be clean and tidy every time. So the question is you have to bath your dog but how often should you bath him or her? Well, ladies and gentlemen, we will provide the best guideline to bath your beautiful and glamorous Golden Retriever.

Introducing Nose Work To Your Golden Retriever Puppy

golden retriever puppy has a bath

Besides your puppy’s talents and impressive skills, for most breeds it’s actually their nose that deserves the most praise. Let’s play a game of hide and seek with a toy to spotlight their gift of good sniffs!

    How to prepare

    • Find an old towel to use.
    • Stuff a Kong or a toilet roll with some food

    How to do it

  • When your puppy is out of the room, hide the toy under a towel.
  • Bring your puppy in and encourage them to find the toy by using the cue word ‘find it’.
  • Use your wonderfully cheerful voice to give your puppy some extra encouragement.
  • Good job! There’s no better reward than finding a toy with food inside.
  • TIPS

    ·   Don’t make it too hard to begin with though…let some of the toy poke out from under the towel

    ·   Once your puppy has had a few practice runs you can start to make it more difficult. I could personally play this game all day.

If only this could work so they help us find our keys….maybe we’ll teach them that trick when they’re older.

Easier Alternatives Than The Bathtub For Dog Bathing

Another approach to the dog bathing dilemma is to teach your Golden Retriever dog to jump into the dry bathtub as a trick.

Reward him with a yummy treat, and he’ll be a pro in no time.

Then, on bath day, just ask your dog to hop into the dry bath tub.

Make sure the door to the room is closed and your favorite dog bathing products are handy.

You can also use a shower stall if it happens to be large enough, and you don’t mind climbing in with your pooch.

Whether you use the family bathtub, a shower stall, or a specially designed dog bathing tub, your dog will feel more secure if you place a rubber mat in the bottom of the tub or stall so he doesn’t slip.

Best Shampoos To Use For Bathing A Golden Retriever

Take a look at some shampoos that you can use for cleaning your Golden Retriever.

Earthbath All Natural Shampoo is one of the most popular pet shampoos currently available in the market. It is a good option for you if you want to wash your beloved Golden Retriever with natural products rather than chemicals that can be rough on your pets’ skin.

One of the best things about the Earthbath shampoo is that it is available in a variety of types and scents. Earthbath offers products for very specific needs like sensitive skin, itchy and dry skin and hot spots. There is even a tearless Earthbath shampoo that you can use if you own a Golden Retriever puppy. Earthbath has also made a shampoo that can brighten dull coats and we recommend it for Golden Retriever parents.

There are a variety of highly-recommend products made by Earthbath. Some of them include:

    • Shed control shampoo

Lathering is something that many natural Golden Retriever shampoos struggle with. But, the non-soap based shampoo-conditioner is great in terms of lathering. The lavender and coconut oil have been added into the product to help your Golden Retriever relax. This is great if you have a pooch that hates to bathe.

Another Dog Bathing Tip: Towel Drying After Bathing

Use a towel to wipe off the remaining water, using a patting or squeezing motion rather than a rubbing one. This will avoid matting or tangling the fur.

Dry the top of his back and head first, then his belly and legs.

When you let him out of the dog bathing area, don’t be surprised if he charges around the house like a wild thing. There’s something about finishing a bath that makes the calmest dog go temporarily crazy.

Maybe he’s just really glad it’s over!

Where Should You Give Your Golden Retriever A Bath

    Golden Retriever Photo

Puppies are usually small enough where they can get baths in the sink or a large bin.

But when they get bigger you can wash them in the tub or shower.
