Despite Their Titled Heritage Golden Retrievers Didn’t Win Breed Recognition Until The 1920s
Golden Retrievers were developed starting in 1850 by the Scotsman Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, the Lord of Tweedmouth. Hunting birds was popular at the time, both as sport and as a practical way of obtaining food. Marjoribanks sought a medium-sized bird dog to support the hunt. The breed was developed by crossing a Retriever with a Water Spaniel, then crossing their offspring with Bloodhounds, Irish Setters, the St. John’s Water Dog, and other Retrievers. Golden Retrievers were first shown in 1908, at the U.K.’s Crystal Palace. They were entered as “flat coats ” rather than the name we know them by today.
It took until 1925 for the breed to win official American Kennel Club recognition. Today, Golden Retrievers are still used for hunting and field trials, and they also perform obedience and guide dog work.

The breed standards are different in the UK and in America.
In America, the breed standard for males is 23-24 inches tall at the withers and 21.5-22.5 inches for females.
In the UK, the breed standard is 22-24 inches tall for males and 20-22 inches tall for females.
So the UK is more accepting of shorter goldens, which is one of the common traits of English type goldens.

English Creams are healthier and live longer than their American brothers according to recent reports.
American Golden Retrievers were more vulnerable than the English Cream Golden Retriever to various cancers such as lymphosarcoma, osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, and mast-cell tumors.
But it doesn’t mean that the English Cream is safe for cancer and will live up to its prime age. It all depends on good breeding and good care by a responsible owner.
Here are some other illnesses that English Creams can suffer:
- Eye diseases: English Cream Golden as well as other breeds of Golden Retriever often suffer from congenital eye diseases. Mild levels will make them often have tears, difficult to see. Severe can cause blindness.
- Diseases related to osteoarthritis such as hip dysplasia, dislocated elbow joints. The cause of this disease is due to Goldens encountering accidents and injuries during moving/playing.

Although there is just one golden retriever breed, there are slight differences, except for the coat color, between the English and American retriever types. However, the pale platinum coat is the trait that made English creams sought-after and popular.

As someone who has owned both the American Golden Retriever and the English Cream Golden Retriever, I can tell you that is the case. Any long-haired dog is going to shed. In my experience, my English Cream Gold Retriever sheds worse than my American Golden Retriever. No matter how often I vacuum, there are always white tumbleweeds of fur in my home. My advice is to brush, brush, brush! I generally brush my boys Koda and Jake a few times each week, and even more during the spring and summer when their coats are in full-shed mode.
Most long-hair dogs shed. Regular brushing is important to keep the fur of the English Cream to a minimum.

Why Are They Called English Retrievers And Not Somewhere Else
All the term English golden retriever is thrown around as much as you here cream golden retrievers. Again there is nothing that’s specifically tailored to the dog being English apart from the fact that you can say that the Scottish bred them.

Yes, you may find many English Cream golden retriever breeders breed healthy dogs, but you also may find other golden retriever breeders produce healthy pups as well.
English Cream Golden Retrievers Should Run For 1 Hour/day
Like other types of Retriever, the English Cream Golden Retriever is at his happiest outdoors.
Nothing brings this breed more joy than a game of fetch with their favorite human- except maybe a cuddle at home afterward.
True to their heritage, these guys love to swim and are true waterdogs.
Consequently, owners should try to take these dogs to places where it is safe for them to swim.

#1: English Cream Golden Retrievers Are Not From England
No, most English Cream goldens you’ll find in America are not from England.
Just like French fries are not from France.
All golden retrievers originated from Scotland in the mid-1800s when Lord Tweedmouth bred a Tweed water spaniel and a yellow wavy-coated retriever.
Most American breeders of these goldens either breed dogs from here in the States or import their dogs from all over the world, including:
- Denmark
- The Netherlands
So how did English Cream goldens get their misleading name?
According to Bev Brown, the Kennel Club and the Golden Retriever Club, were the first ones to write up the breed standard.
And in the early 1900s, all dog shows in Britain were held in England.
So in America, we called the champions of those dog shows, “English Champions.”
The “English” seems to have stuck with goldens that look like the English champions in those days, so 100 years later we’re calling them “English” Cream Golden Retrievers.

The most important thing for any breeder is not looks or coat color.

And since the neighborhood breeders are typically pricing their dogs on the lower end, while quality breeders are typically charging on the higher end, it’s safe to assume that, yes, you will pay more for an English Cream.
