Golden Retriever Lab Mix Care
Since all Golden Retriever Labrador mixes have the double layer of Lab, they need to be brushed weekly, probably more during shedding season.
In addition to weekly brushing, you will need to brush your dogs teeth regularly to prevent dental problems and gum disease. Their nails should also be trimmed regularly.
Do golden retriever lab mixes make good family pets?
Both parent breeds are popular pets because of the friendly, loyal, and gentle but playful nature of these dogs. They are known to get along well with children and other animals.

Costs Involved In Owning A Golden Labrador
There seems to be quite a range in prices for the Golden Labrador starting at $500 and going up to $1800. You should let the trustworthiness if the breeder and the health of the puppy be the guiding factor more than how much it costs. You will need to also spend about $230 on medical tests, collar and leash, a crate, spaying and a micro chip. Ongoing medical costs each year will be $485 to $600 to cover pet insurance, vet check ups, vaccinations and so on. Ongoing non-medical costs each year will be $500 to $650 covering things like food, a license, training, treats and toys.
Exercising Your Golden Retriever Off
If a golden retriever has a strong recall and returns quickly when you call them, wandering off the leash at the dog park is a perfect way to wear out your golden. Generally, golden retrievers are obedient and typically have a strong recall if they are trained correctly. Proper dog training is the key to being able to successfully let your golden run off-leash.
Alternatively, you can use a retractable dog leash to allow more flexibility while still retaining control during walks. For a golden retriever, youll need to make sure you have a strong retractable leash like the Tug 360 Heavy Duty Leash . A leash like this will give your golden plenty of room to run and explore, while staying in your control.
If you have a golden retriever you just cant seem to wear out, you can try adding some resistance to the walk by using a weighted jacket or dog harness like this one on Amazon. To be safe, make sure the added weight is no more than 10 percent of their total body weight. Doing this is more than enough to fatigue a dog with endless energy, and it will help to strengthen their muscles without overworking them.
Another option to increase resistance and wear your dog out is by walking on sand or adding an uphill route on the walk. Choosing a walking route with some challenges will increase the amount of exercise your dog gets from an outing.

Essentially, puppies are creatures of habit and will always need a bathroom break after theyve had a drink, eaten a meal, played, or had a nap.
If you want to make life a little easier on yourself , it pays to get into a set routine.
Obviously, you cant account for everything. But if you can create a schedule based around their regular activities and then time their bathroom breaks accordingly, youll catch more accidents than you miss.

The Instinctive And Adaptive Intelligence Of Golden Retrievers
Even the most qualified canine psychologists agree that a well-rounded system of judging a breeds average intelligence does not exist. The current test of wit for Golden Retrievers relies upon working intelligence and obedience.
While it is a considerable method to measure the IQ of a dog, it does not cover all aspects. Despite this, it remains the most objective procedure to follow when evaluating the intelligence of a breed.
The brainpower of dogs consists of two additional and crucial elements. These are adaptive and instinctive intelligence.
Several researchers argue that adaptive intelligence and instinctive acumen are more important than the one-dimensional factors of obedience and work. Read ahead to gain a better understanding of these two components and how they play into the intelligence of Golden Retrievers.

Examples In Dog Behavior Training
The complimentary book includes detailed information about why your dog behaves in a particular way.
Adrienne says that dogs whine because they have a genetic tendency to do so. This is especially true when the dogs try to communicate with their parents.
If your dog gets distressed from being in a new environment, its a natural reaction. You can be sure that every dog wont get used to the change. They whine to get your attention. Other notable behaviors include:
These behaviors are common in almost all breeds. Each of these behaviors is unique and each one has a reason. Give them what they want, and theyll be satisfied.

Testing a dogs smarts is harder than it seems.
While you cant give a dog an IQ test, one psychology professor found a way to work out how brainy each breed is.
Professor Stanley Coron worked with 200 obedience trial judges to test a range of dog breeds. He asked these judges to record the performance of AKC and CKC recognized breeds. Each breed included in his results had at least 100 responses meaning that the data is pretty sound.
In total 133 different breeds underwent testing. These dogs were then divided into categories based on their performance.
So how did the Golden Retriever rank?
According to Professor Coron, Golden Retrievers are the fourth most intelligent breed!
But what does an IQ test for dogs look like? To test the brains of North Americas dogs, Professor Coron used two main criteria:
Golden Retrievers outdid themselves in these tasks. It only took the average Golden Retriever five repetitions to learn a new task. Furthermore, they were able to perform known tasks on the first try 95% of the time.
These are some smart dogs!
The Golden Retrievers scored better than other brainy dogs like the Doberman Pinscher. They were only outdone by Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds.
The Trifecta Of Retrievers
Did you know there are three types of golden retrievers? Thereâs the British golden retriever, the American golden retriever and the Canadian golden retriever. The difference? In a nutshell, the British and American types have different-looking muzzles and the American golden retriever is darker and taller â although not as tall as the Canadian golden retriever which is also thinner and has an even darker coat.

How Long You Should Walk Your Golden Retriever
Regular walking is crucial for the health of the golden retriever. A long walk helps a retriever to relax its energetic mind and take in all the sights, sounds, and smells they experience along the way.
A golden retriever could literally walk all day long and cover dozens of miles. Fortunately for us, that much walking is not required. Ideally, a good walk for a golden can be 30 to 60 minutes in length. The daily walk with your golden retriever can be done all at once, or it can be done for shorter periods of time, multiple times a day.
The speed of the walk should be pretty fast. A brisk walk is necessary because golden retrievers are difficult to fully tire out. If youre a runner, youre in luck, because there is no better jogging partner than a golden retriever. Running with your golden, however, is not a requirement.
Should You Get A Miniature Golden Retriever
Its hard to go wrong with choosing these small dogs, as their parent breeds the Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel, and Poodle all have even temperaments and great looks.
Whats not to love about a smaller version of the Golden Retriever?
These adorable canines are friendly and smart and they make for good family dogs that are perfect for owners who love to spend time being physically active.
However, these dogs also need plenty of grooming because of their thick coats.

Cognitive Abilities And Social Intelligence
Its been found that the cognitive ability of dogs can be measured quickly, with results showing the structure of their abilities to be similar to what we also find in humans.
A 2017 study found that the social intelligence of dogs is similar to toddlers. Dogs are able to form rewarding relationships with their owners using cooperative communication skills, in the same way that toddlers do with their parents and guardians.
The methods used in this test were similar to those used to test both humans and apes. Surprisingly, the patterns shared by dogs and human infants were not observed in chimpanzees.
While we may like to take that as proof that our canine companions are exceptional other studies point out that their level of cognition is not extraordinary.
It may simply be that as one of the animal species that lives with us in such close proximity, that they are particularly sensitive to our actions.
Certain Breeds Have Specific Instinctive Intelligence
The first thing that is different in each breed is instinctive intelligence. This intelligence can be explained based on what they were bred for. For instance, German Shepherds were bred for herding animals, while Golden Retrievers were bred for fetching. Since certain breeds can be born with specific skills, breed does matter when it comes to intelligence pertaining to certain skills.

Why Shouldnt You Get A Bernese Mountain Dog
Originally from Switzerland, the Bernese mountain dog is used to cold temperatures and doesnt fare well in hot weather. Dont get a Berner if you live in a tropical region where the weather stays hot for long periods of time. Living in these conditions can only make your Bernese mountain dog miserable, and there are many other breeds that are better suited for warmer climates.
Grooming Needs & Shedding
The Afghan hound golden retriever mix needs regular grooming, so prepare yourself for daily brushing your pup.
Bathe them at least once a month and whenever they get too dirty by playing outside in the mud, snow, or dirt.
Brush their teeth about 2 or 3 times a week to prevent tartar buildup or bacteria, and every day if you want to prevent gum infection.
Trim their nails once or twice a month and wipe their ears at least once a week to prevent any infection.

So, we went and surveyed owners on the Golden Retriever Sub Reddit and other popular dog forums to ask them this question. Heres what these owners had to say about their dog:

Golden Retrievers Need Lots Of Training & Exercise
Goldens were bred to retrieve game and hunt in the fields all day.
So if you take a dog with those sort of genetics and pen them up inside all day, youre going to have problems.
A bored dog is a misbehaved dog, which can result in unwanted barking, chewing, jumping, leash pulling almost all unwanted behaviors stem from your pup being bored.
So how do you prevent boredom?
Goldens are smart and need to be both mentally and physically stimulated.
It takes up a lot of time to keep a golden well trained and occupied, so if playing with and training your dog a few hours a day doesnt sound fun, or just isnt possible for you, then a golden might not be the dog for you.
The Vacuum Cleaner Will Be Your New Best Friend
German Shepherd Lab Mix is a double-coated breed, which means they have an undercoat next to the skin with longer hair over the top. Dogs from this crossbreed shed a lot, especially when the seasons change.
If you want to keep her hair shiny and healthy, you should take time to brush her for at least 10-15 minutes, three-to-five times a week. During spring and fall shell need to be brushed daily, and sometimes the use of a shedding blade can be required.
A consistent brushing schedule will help you reduce the amount of hair around the house. However, you should start looking for a vacuum cleaner for pet hair as youll be cleaning your home almost daily.
- cleaning her ears ,
- brushing her teeth ,
- and cleaning her eyes .
While this sounds like a lot, on the other hand, she only needs to take a bath about once a month.
Trimming her nails requires professional help in most cases, because theyre strong and transparent, with blood vessels and nerves. Exercising her on a concrete surface could help you keep her nails in good shape and reduce the number of visits to the vet.

How To Mentally Satisfy Golden Retrievers
Because golden retrievers are smart, high-energy dogs, they need to be mentally stimulated.
If you dont challenge them mentally, theyll start to engage in destructive or unwanted behavior, like chewing up household items, or excessive barking.
Here are two great ways to mentally stimulate your golden:
Golden retrievers love to learn so a few training sessions per day will help keep them challenged and satisified.
Puzzle toys, like frozen kongs, are great for making them think and earn their food.
Many trainers Ive talked to actually dont even have food bowls for their dogs.
Instead, they feed them out of puzzle toys or make them earn their meals during training sessions.
This keeps them from getting bored and destructive.
Personally, we only feed Oliver from a food ball which takes him about five to ten minutes to get all of his food.
Another way to keep goldens stimulated and prevent destructive behavior is to get them to love chewing on chew toys.
Check out this article to learn more about getting your golden to love chew toys.
Golden & Poodle Vs Average Dogs
Now that we know both the Golden Retriever and Poodle rank at the very top of the dogdom, how smart are they compared to others?
For reference, the average dog breed that is, with average intelligence, will need 25 to 40 repetitions to learn a new command. Compared to the Goldendoodles parent breeds, they need 5 to 8 times more repetitions!
Furthermore, average dogs will obey a known command on the first try with just a 50% success rate. This means the Golden and Poodle are nearly twice as likely to get it right on the first attempt.
Whats surprising is that average dogs are some of the most iconic and popular breeds in the world. These dogs include the Australian Shepherd, Great Dane, Siberian Husky, Bichon Frise, Shiba Inu and more.

Are Golden Retrievers Smarter Than Labradors
Labrador Retrievers, often called labradors or labs, are a medium to large-sized breed and have all black, chocolate, or yellow coats. Labradors are known for their loyalty, playfulness, and obedience. Theyre listed as the most popular dog in the U.S.
Both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers are easy to train and are popular companion dogs. However, they do not rank the same in intelligence.
Although they are still fairly similar in terms of intelligence, Golden Retrievers are ranked fourth in Dr. Stanley Corens list of smartest dogs while Labradors are ranked seventh.
Even though they are ranked as seventh, Labrador Retrievers are still brilliant dogs. Labradors are used as therapy, military, and police dogs. They are also trained for search and rescue operations.
They have an incredibly advanced sense of smell, which makes them great for finding narcotics in the police service. Lastly, Labradors have a unique talent for self-training. They are so intelligent that they observe and can even copy some human behaviors.

Are Golden Retrievers Mischievous
Golden retrievers are very smart and love to play.
Those are both good qualities until you as the owner dont want to play!
Heres a quick story about my golden retriever, Oliver.
It was easy to teach him the drop it command as a puppy.
He was very young when he learned that when were playing tug, or if he has something in his mouth, drop it means open your mouth and drop it.
However, hes also so smart that hes learned that stealing rags from the kitchen gets us to play his favorite game, which is keep away.
When he takes a rag from the kitchen and we ask him to drop it you can literally see the gears in his head spinning as he asks himself, Should I be obedient and drop it? Or should we continue to play my favorite game?
The combination of golden retrievers love of playing and their brains can sometimes drive you wild.
