Want To Ensure Your Golden Retriever Will Be Good Around Kids Do These 3 Things

Why do Golden Retrievers LOVE to Cuddle?

Although most goldens are naturally good with kids, if you want to give yourself the best shot at having a golden thats great around kids, do these three things:

Socialize them

We talked a little about this in the section about aggression, but to make sure that your golden is calm and confident around your kids , be sure to socialize them.

Help them have positive experiences while kids are screaming or running around, or when you bust out the big scary stroller.

Also, get them used to different types of people in different types of outfits and situations.

Train them

When your golden is obedient, youll be able to control them better.

Did your kid just puke all over the floor?

Asking your dog to sit and stay will make your life much easier.

Did your kid just fall and bust their knee?

They might not want your dog all up in their business right then and there, so asking your golden to sit and stay while you make everything better will also make life easier for everyone.

Exercise them

A tired dog is a good dog.

If your golden has pent up energy, they can chew up the house, run around the house, or be more apt to jump on your children.

But if you mentally and physically stimulate your dog, many of their bad behaviors will go away.

You can get some of that energy out by training them, playing games like fetch and tug, and giving them puzzle toys.

Golden retrievers are one of the best breeds for families with children.

Theyre sweet, gentle dogs that love being around people.

Teaching Your Child To Be Good Around Golden Retrievers

So far weve been asking ourselves if golden retrievers are good with kids, but a better question might be this: are kids good with golden retrievers?

Just like you need to teach your golden retriever appropriate behavior around children, youll probably need to teach your children appropriate behavior around dogs.

Make sure that your kid doesnt:

  • grab your goldens fur, ears, tail, paws, or face
  • hit them
  • step on them or their tail
  • chase them when they dont want to be chased

My nephew is a year-and-a-half old and he doesnt quite have the coordination for a gentle pet , so their physical interactions are rather limited until he gets a little older.

They Are Easy To Train

One of the top 5 smartest dogs in the world, Golden retrievers are considered easy to train and can learn an awful lot of commands and tricks.

Of course youll want to master basic obedience together, but you can also impress your friends with all sorts of tricks such as: Learning the names of and fetching different items, putting away their toys, dancing and even bringing you a drink!

Of course, being such an intelligent breed it does mean you simply have to dedicate to regular training, otherwise those smarts can lead to mischief and misbehavior.

Why Do Golden Retrievers Like To Cuddle

Now that weve established that Golden Retrievers are cuddly balls of fur, we should talk for a bit about why do goldens like to cuddle, because this is just part of their charm.

There are a couple of scientific reasons why dogs like to cuddle, and others that are not so-scientific but are just as important to mention.

Why A Golden Retriever Might Not Be Right For Your Family

Although golden retrievers make great pets, theyre not right for every family.

Here are some reasons that goldens might not be good for your family:

Golden retrievers are boisterous puppies

As puppies, goldens are energetic and excitable, and a crying baby or bumbling toddler can get them riled up.

Of course, the toddler and puppy phases will go by quick, so take this with a grain of salt, but just be aware that while your golden is a puppy theyll require extra supervision around your children.

Golden retrievers have needs, too

Golden retrievers are not exactly low maintenance dogs.

Theyre high energy breeds that need lots of exercise and attention.

A house with kids could be the perfect fit for a golden, but if youre always away at soccer practice, or always changing diapers and trying to get the kids to sleep, it may be tough to attend to the needs of your golden retriever too.

Why Do Golden Retrievers Push

When your Golden Retriever leans on you, he or she may just be trying to feel and deepen that bond. Some dogs may lean when they are feeling insecure or fearful. Leaning on you can be his or her way of offering that affection and getting it in return, whether or not there are any underlying feelings of insecurity.

What Is Bad About Golden Retrievers

Despite their friendly and loving nature, Golden Retrievers are purebred dogs, which means that they can be at risk of developing a variety of different health problems. Some of the most common health problems associated with the Golden Retriever breed are cancer, heart disease, cataracts, epilepsy, skin conditions, as well as hip and elbow dysplasia.

Dogs Like Cuddling Because It Provides Warmth

Why do dogs like to cuddle? The biggest clue as to why dogs enjoy cuddling comes from the definition itself: to cuddle is to hold close for warmth or comfort or in affection.

If youve ever seen a puppy pile you know how adorable it is. But aside from being the cutest thing ever it makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint. Puppies snuggle with one another to keep warm. When you get cold you can snuggle up under a blanket or put on some extra layer, for our dogs its not quite that simple.

Cuddling with humans was an important part of canine domestication. Early dogs helped us hunt and alerted us to danger, but we also helped each other out by cuddling and keeping each other warm. In fact, the termthree dog night refers to those really cold nights when humans had to cuddle up with 3 dogs to keep from freezing to death.

For thousands of years dogs and humans have been cuddling up with each other to stay warm.

Why Do Goldendoodles Want To Sleep Beside People

Goldendoodles want to sleep beside people primarily because they are social creatures. Their instincts allow them to feel secure and comfortable sleeping this way since they consider their person to be a pack member.

Dogs, including Goldendoodles, are pack animals. This means that they are evolutionarily compelled to live in social groups.

Since dogs are domesticated, they are primed to accept humans into their social structure and even look to us as the leaders of the pack.

Co-sleeping is a very natural urge, then, for such animals because in the wild it would be safer to sleep with your packmates than to not.

Co-sleeping with your Goldendoodle may also facilitate bonding

They might want to do so because they feel close to you in addition to the fact that having you near helps them feel safe and secure.

Does Golden Retriever Shed More Than Labrador

Labs shed as much as, if not more than, the average dog. Like Goldens, Labs have a double coat. So Golden Retriever vs Labrador shedding is similar, but Goldens usually require more day to day grooming. Their long hairs also show up more when they do shed than the black or chocolate Lab, due to their light color.

Golden Retriever Loves Giving People Hugs On Her Daily Walks

ALL ABOUT GOLDEN RETRIEVERS

Cesar Fernandez-Chavez regularly takes his dog, Louboutina, on walks around Manhattan. However, this little pup, who goes by the nickname, Loubie, has a unique habit for making friends. This incredibly friendly dog always wants to stop to greet strangers, and when they stop to pet her, Loubie loves to hug them by wrapping her forelegs around their knees.

As Fernandez-Chavez said to The Dodo, Its just not a regular walk. Its a walk with hugging. So we dont get to go too far.

Fernandez-Chavez doesnt know where she got it from as he never taught her how to do it. However, its cute all the same that Loubie taught herself to hug people this way.

Prior to Loubie wanting to give out hugs to people, she wanted to hold hands. That particular hand-holding tradition began way back around Valentines Day in 2014, just after Fernandez-Chavez got out of a long-term relationship.

As Fernandez-Chavez explained, She started sitting up and grabbing my hands with both of her paws, and then crossing the other paw over her paw. I remember joking with my friends, At least I have someone to hold hands with during Valentines.’

It soon became Loubies favorite activity, and she quickly began seeking it handholding attention whenever she went out hit the streets of New York.

A couple years later her affection demonstration leveled up when she began to give out hugs.

Because Loubie loved to give out hugs, she got quite popular even rising to the ranks of social media star!

Are Golden Retrievers Good With Toddlers

Just like babies, golden retrievers are known for being good with toddlers.

Goldens are patient and like attention, and toddlers are curious and like to touch things, so theyre usually a perfect match.

We spent Olivers first Thanksgiving at my parents house and they had lots of people over.

One couple brought their two-year-old and he and Oliver played chase all through the house.

It was adorable and the best part was that you couldnt tell who was having more fun they were both having a blast!

However, just like with babies, you wouldnt want to leave your toddler alone with a dog.

Toddlers can often grab, step on, or trip over dogs, which might scare or annoy them.

So as long as you supervise the two of them, golden retrievers are known for being good with toddlers.

Lots And Lots Of Energy

If you enjoy two long walks a day, endless games of fetch and a healthy dose of swimming then this dog will be a lot of fun, however, busy and rather chill on the sofa?

Then this breed may not be for you. Without at least an hour of proper high intensity exercise this dog can became restless and a restless dog tends to resort back to a naughty puppy regardless of how many hours of training you put in.

How Your Goldendoodle Was Raised

If you are not the first owner of your Goldendoodle, firstly, thank you for adopting! Secondly, you will need to be understanding that your dogs previous owners may not have raised them the way you would have.

They might have even come from traumatic, abusive, or just neglectful backgrounds wherein they were not socialized correctly.

Dogs from these backgrounds need patience and kindness from their owners.

They might not be the cuddly dogs you expect in fact, they might act aloof or fearful towards you.

If you are unsure how to handle situations with a dog that has been improperly socialized, you should consult an expert like a trainer and perhaps enroll in some training classes that are appropriate for your dogs unique needs.

Most importantly, if your Goldendoodle appears uncomfortable or becomes scared and aggressive when you try to cuddle, do not force them.

They may become more affectionate with you over time. Even if not, if you respect them and earn their trust, Goldendoodles and other dogs can show you love in other ways.

Even if they are simply comfortable in your presence or follow you around, it is a sign that your Goldendoodle likes you.

Why Do Golden Retrievers Put Their Paw On You

Have you ever noticed the way your Golden Retriever looks at you when they put their paw on you?

Eyes filled with love and head tilted to one side? This is because when a Golden Retriever puts their paw on you, it means that they want to interact with you and it is a sign of their affection.

When you are sat watching TV or working, it is likely your Golden Retriever will put their paw on you in an attempt to draw your attention away from whatever it is you are trying to do, and instead move it to them!

If your Golden Retriever puts their paw on you to get your attention what a polite pup you have!

When a Golden Retriever wants to interact with you or desires your attention, it is also common for them to jump on you that way you have got to play right?!

Your Golden Retriever may be trying to get your attention by putting their paw on you because they are hungry or want something to eat. If it is near a mealtime, this may be the case.

Retrievers are known for their love of food and big appetite if your Retriever is begging for food, they can be trained out of this and taught to follow commands.

If your Golden Retriever has been a little naughty or told off for something, they could be putting their paw on you to ask for forgiveness adorable right?

Golden Retrievers are highly intelligent and can pick up on human emotions.

Forgive your Golden Retriever if they touch you with their paw to say sorry, because this is your dogs way of acknowledging their mistake.

Can Golden Retrievers Be Aggressive

Although golden retrievers are generally loving dogs, just like any other dog breed they can be aggressive.

Aggressive golden retrievers are usually created, not born.

Theyre created from neglect, abuse, and a lack of proper socialization.

What does socializaton have to do with aggression?

Well, aggression from most golden retrievers comes from a place of fear, which usually stems from a lack of socialization.

For example, maybe your golden retriever has never seen a person in a hat with sunglasses on.

One day youre walking on the street and come across a boy in a hat with sunglasses.

He asks if he can pet your dog and you say yes, knowing that your golden loves kids.

But since your golden has never seen a boy in a hat and sunglasses, this particular boy scares him, and he might bite the boy as he boldly approaches your pup and puts his hand towards his face.

So as youre raising your golden retriever puppy, be sure to properly socialize them to avoid fear and aggression problems in the future.

Get them used to being around other animals, noises, objects, environments, and different types of people, so that they grow into confident adults.

Why Do Retrievers Like To Cuddle So Much

In most cases, Retrievers like to cuddle because they love the person they are cuddling with. They very much enjoy showering their owners with love. It is in their nature. Being one of the friendliest breeds, you should expect that they will start to snuggle with you anytime they want to. The warmth they get from people, is one of their most favorite things on earth.

Also, they love their owners smell. It reassures them and makes them feel safer in unfriendly environments. Hence, they tend to cuddle more when you take them to new places.

After sniffing, they feel more energetic and end up playing around. They are very well-behaved dogs, so they will never make a scene or bark at anyone they dont know.

What Are The 3 Types Of Golden Retrievers

While you might think all Golden Retrievers look very similar, the breed actually has three different colors golden, light golden, and dark golden as well as three different types English, Canadian, and American. There are subtle differences between the types of Goldens, but they all fall under the same breed.

Why Do Dogs Like To Cuddle

Cat Loves to Cuddle With Golden Retrievers #shorts

Does your dog like to cuddle? My dog certainly does, and shes quite happy with being a 70 pound lap dog. But not all of my previous dogs were big on cuddling.

And before we begin I want to clarify one thing: this article is about dogs & cuddling, not hugging. Theres plenty of controversy over whether or not dogs like hugs. This isnt about that.

This is about cuddling. Those moments when our dogs choose to be right next to us, the times when our dogs initiate closeness to us. So why do dogs like to cuddle anyway?

Do Golden Retrievers Bite

Yes, Golden Retrievers are known for their good-natured demeanor, but they are still dogs. Sometimes, Golden Retrievers will bite in response to fear or distress. Dogs bite as a reaction to something. If the dog finds himself in a stressful situation, he may bite to defend himself or his territory.

Do Golden Retrievers Like To Be Hugged

There is really no guarantee that someone who likes bacon will also like ham even though they are both types of meat. Similarly, even though they are both forms of showing affection, Golden Retrievers definitely love to be cuddled, but when it comes to being held tight and squeezed, will they also like it?

This raises the question; do golden retrievers like to be hugged?

No! Like all dogs, they dislike the concept of being tightly held or squeezed in an embrace.

This can be attributed to genetics because dogs, in general, are unfamiliar with the idea of hugging. Instead, they are known to place their legs on the back or shoulder of another dog to signify authority over the latter. A concept is known as âstanding over.â

Regardless of this, some dogs are unique. This also applies to Golden Retrievers who are naturally close contact dogs and would stoop however low to please their owners. It is, therefore, not impossible to see a Golden Retriever heartily taking a hug.

Breeding could also affect a Golden Retrievers love for hugs. Though not genetically inclined, a Golden Retriever could be trained to like being hugged, especially when this is a predominant feature among family members at home.

As the Golden Retriever watches, so he learns with a desire not to be left out in this particular display of affection.

Is There Such A Thing As A Dog Being Too Cuddly

This answer depends on each dog and pet parent pair or family.

Some pet parents may not like to be cuddled with their dog regardless of the breed.  If that is the case, then yes, there is a limit to how much cuddle time a person can share.

The good news is that golden retrievers appear to have a sixth sense or intuitive bond with their pet parents at times, and they may be able to anticipate when it is not a good time to cuddle.

No one can say for sure if every golden retriever can anticipate what their pet parent wants and doesnt want.  If, however, a pet parent finds themselves dealing with a golden retriever looking for some cuddle time, these people-pleasing dogs will understand that now is not a good time.

They are very gentle and loving and will probably wait until a better time comes up.

It should be said that pet parents who dont enjoy cuddling up with their golden retriever if this is done too often for this breed could affect their overall health.

Like other dog breeds that thrive in close connection to their pet parents, golden retrievers can feel less connected if their need for attention and cuddle time is not provided.

Golden Retriever Characteristics That Make Them Perfect

Its no secret: golden retrievers are practically perfect, so much so that you cant help but smile as soon as you see one. Chances are, because theyre smiling right back. Goldens are loyal, happy, fun-loving, caring and intelligent, and bring laughter and joy to anyone and everyone whether its their person or a random person happening by. Whats not to love?
