Saved From Slaughter: A Powerful Incentive To Adopt Dogs From China

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — After several unsuccessful attempts to adopt a dog locally, Tottenville resident Robert Zhen came across the organization No Dogs Left Behind website. NDLB is a non-profit organization that rescues dogs from slaughterhouses and the dog meat market in China.
In May 2020, Zhen officially adopted two dogs through NDLB. Due to the international flight restrictions during COVID, the dogs didnt arrive here in the U.S. until January of this year.
Zhens children, Bernice, 12, and Corey, 10, picked out the names for their rescue pups. Kirby is a Samoyed, approximately four years old, and Yoshi is a two-year-old Golden Retriever.

Both Kirby and Yoshi quickly adjusted to living with their new family. Zhen described both of them as being very friendly and sweet, each with their own personality. Yoshi is laid-back while Kirby is more attached to the hip, always ready for attention and petting, according to Zhen.

The Zhens also adopted a third rescue, Yuki who is a 10-month-old German Shepherd mix, through the Sean Casey Animal Rescue group last year. Zhen says that after getting to know each other, Kirby, Yoshi, and Yuki are now the best of friends

Golden Retrievers Saved From Slaughter Arrive In Miami From China
MIAMI, Fla. A golden retriever rescue group based in South Florida awaited the arrival of 20 dogs from China being flown into Miami along with 20 eager dog lovers waiting to take their new pet home.
A spokesperson for Golden Rescue South Florida said the dogs were abused in China and would have most likely been butchered and ended up in the dog market as food.
Unfortunately, they have meat markets, they eat dogs, so were saving them from the slaughterhouses, the meat markets some of them are owner surrenders, Kristine Minerva, rescue coordinator, said.
The dogs arrived Sunday morning in Miami via China Air. Local families adopting the animals were interviewed prior to picking up their retrievers. Golden Rescue said they make sure that the owner and home are the right fit for the rescued pup and that the accommodations are suitable for the dogs.
The group raised money to bring the golden retrievers here they said it costs a minimum of $2,600 per dog.
It was a big undertaking along with several months of planning including the dogs needing customs paperwork to enter the United States, along with medical exams upon arrival.
China is just one international location for Golden Rescue South Florida. The nonprofit organization has rescued retrievers from Turkey, South Korea, and Puerto Rico, as well as working with other animal advocacy groups and shelters in South Florida.

A Minnesota-based rescue group is saving golden retrievers from Chinas dog meat trade.
NCB4i reports that since 1985, Retrieve a Golden of the Midwest has worked to rescue thousands of golden retrievers and golden retriever mix breeds. Recently, theyve begun saving the dogs from Chinas meat markets. Around 10 million dogs are killed for their meat every year in the country, which is the largest consumer of dog meat in the world.
RAGOM claims that golden retrievers arent usually bred for food, but they are often stolen. I learned while I was over there, they dont walk dogs on leashes,explained Nicole Studzia, a member of RAGOMs board of directors. Its very easy for somebody to jump out of a truck, grab a dog, jump in, and drive off.
Among RAGOMs thousands of success stories is Mama. When the organization found her, shed just had puppies and her eyes held intense sadness, says a RAGOM press release.
Studzia explained, RAGOM village kind of rallied together and a volunteer was kind enough to go over there with her husband and daughter and they were able to bring Mama back with four others. Its unbelievable to me that she made it back there.
Mama together with Georgia, Sissy, Jovi, and Mosby is now being cared for in a foster home and is receiving the veterinary care, love, and affection she needs.

China’s dog meat trade has been going on for decades. As you read through this account of the dog meat trade, you must keep in mind that this is not a cultural tradition and that there is a rapidly growing outcry against the practice not only internationally but from the Chinese people themselves. Please don’t paint the Chinese people with a broad brush.
The stopping of trucks and confiscating dogs on their way to a slaughter house is dangerous work that requires a large group of dedicated volunteers whose sole purpose is to save dogs from the horror in which they’ve been living and a very painful death.
Once there are enough volunteers at the scene, the dogs are confiscated and off-loaded. Some dogs have already perished and must be taken away. The remaining dogs go through a triage and sorted into groups according to their levels of health.
Even if golden retriever rescues were to bring 100% of the dog meat golden survivors over to the U.S., it would not end China’s dog meat trade. What will end it is pressure placed on China’s government by its own citizens and large animal rights groups, such as Humane Society International.
However, bringing the dogs over to the U.S. will support China’s internal anti-dog-meat trade movement and alleviate the pressure in the various shelters, and most importantly, we will have given so many goldens a second chance to live.
The Dogs Are Humanely Killed
Withthe exception of South Korea, Asias dog meat trade relies heavily on theillegal activity of dog stealing to sustain it. The majority of dogs caught upin the trade are family pets and strays snatched from the streets. Dog thievesuse a variety of methods, including poison, and sell the animals to traders andrestaurant owners.
The animals are crammed in small cages in their hundreds unable to move, and piled on the back of trucks, packed so tightly they are unable to move. They are driven for days or weeks, often sick and injured, and many animals die from suffocation, dehydration, illness or heatstroke before they reach their destination.
Dogs shipped to the Yulin festival will come from as far as Anhui, Hubei and Henan in Central China, as much as 1,500 miles away. This is an excruciatingly cruel transport during which the dogs are denied food, water and comfort. Uploading and unloading of dogs is violent, with cages routinely hurled up to the truck and smashed down at unloading.
Bodilyinjuries caused by the sharp wire ends, biting, and rough handling cause untoldsuffering to the dogs. All dogs will end up at a slaughterhouse, liveanimal market or restaurant. The method by which theyare slaughtered varies.
