Huntleigh Golden Retrievers is located in Alhambra, Illinois, about 30 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. We have been breeding and raising Golden retriever puppies for over 30 years, including show quality dogs and great family pets. Our dogs are excellent companions and we are focused on raising healthy and socialized Golden retrievers. Many dogs from Huntleigh Golden Retrievers have grown up to be active therapy, service and hunting dogs. Others continue to participate in obedience, agility and rally trials.

Darleen Harmon, the founder of Huntleigh Golden Retrievers, started showing dogs in 1984 and is a member of both the local Golden Retriever Club of Greater St. Louis and the Golden Retriever Club of America. As a breeder, Darleen is focused on matching up the perfect dog with the perfect family. By spending time with the puppies, Darleen is able to evaluate their temperament and match the puppies with a suitable family.

When breeding dogs, Darleen is careful to consider longevity and temperament. She actively investigates the role feeding, environment and genetics play in a dogs development and likes to stay in contact with the families to learn how the puppy is growing. As a breeder, Darleen wants to support you even after you bring your puppy home.

Beloved Dog Found After Nearly Four Years

Sparkle, a 6-year-old Golden Retriever, has spent half of her life missing and away from the two women who love her the most her original owner, Caroline Buettner, who lives in Aurora, Neb., and her current owner, Darleen Harmon of Alhambra.

The pure bred, missing for nearly four years, was reunited with her Illinois family in May utilizing the technology of the microchip that was placed in the dog shortly after her birth.

Buettner, who breeds and raises Golden Retrievers, originally gave Sparkle to Harmon in 2007, when the dog was a year old.

Harmon said she and her family experienced an immediate connection when Sparkle entered their home. Not to mention that Harmon and Sparkle shared the same birth date.

Shes just one of those special dogs that come into your life, Harmon said. She is very affectionate and loves toys.

Harmon and her husband, Thad, own Huntleigh Kennels and have been breeding and showing goldens for the last 30 years. The kennel is recognized as a reputable kennel in the Golden Retriever Club of America, and their dogs have won numerous American Kennel Club awards throughout the Midwest.

It was a routine day in the Harmon household the day Sparkle went missing from her Alhambra home, which is surrounded by acres and acres of farmland, perfect for the breed.

“I had to leave for work, so I told my son Travis about her being outside and asked him to let her in. He called me at work later and said she never showed up.
