English Cream Golden Retriever Aka Platinum Retriever Aka White Retriever

The English cream golden retriever is known by several different names in the U.S.

Besides English Cream Golden Retriever, this breed also goes by Platinum Retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, and also simply White Retriever or White Golden Retriever.

Although there is just one golden retriever breed, there are slight differences, except for the coat color, between the English and American retriever types. However, the pale platinum coat is the trait that made English creams sought-after and popular.

European Golden Retrievers Are Less Likely To Die From Cancer Than American Golden Retrievers

According to this study in Cambridge, 38.8% of golden retrievers from Europe will die from cancer, while, according to the Morris Animal Foundation, 60% of golden retrievers in America will get cancer.

Heres a quote in Vet Street about why this is the case:

When studied in a laboratory, the genes of American and U.K. Goldens are significantly different, suggesting that the risk of hemangiosarcoma is related to a relatively recent genetic alteration.

English Cream Golden Retrievers

Golden Retriever Puppy Toto

In recent years there has been a sharp increase in internet marketing strategies aimed at specifically promoting cream-colored Golden Retrievers. These light dogs are sometimes being presented to the general public as being exceptionally rare or extremely valuable and are often called English Cream Golden Retrievers or Rare White European Golden Retrievers or Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers. Such cream Golden Retrievers are frequently being touted as being healthier, of having better temperament, of having stronger longevity and the implicit suggestion is that they therefore are more valuable than the more golden-colored Golden Retrievers bred in North America. Due to these common marketing ploys the average puppy buyer sometimes mistakes such light-colored Golden Retrievers for being a separate breed. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one Golden Retriever breed, governed by the breed standard endorsed by various recognized Kennel Clubs around the world.

The photo below furthermore illustrates the common shades of cream and gold found on this continent and all of these particular dogs are bred right here in North America. This broad range of color is not only commonly found around the world, but both light and dark shades can also occur in the very same Golden Retriever litter, with full siblings varying in color from very light cream to a rich gold.

Have you ever heard of an English Cream Golden Retriever? Also known as the White Retriever, AKA the Platinum Retriever. This pale-coated dog IS NOT a new and rare breed.

In fact, the English cream and your typical golden are the same dog breed but with different breed standards.

While the platinum golden retriever looks slightly different than your neighboring golden, this isnât a new rare breed as some breeders claim. Similar to its American cousin but different at the same time, the platinum-coated retriever has a lot to offer.

If you are looking for a devoted, highly-trainable, family dog, the English cream retriever might be the right dog for you!

However, while very popular, platinum-coated retrievers are still hard to come by and a purebred puppy can make a big dent in your bank account.

In this article, Iâll tell you everything you need to know about this type of golden retriever and help you decide if this is the right dog for you.

Note: We are using the terms English Cream Golden Retriever, Platinum Retriever, and White Retriever interchangeably in this article.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Are More Expensive

The chances of your neighborhood breeder breeding English Cream goldens are less than the chance theyre breeding gold golden retrievers.

And since the neighborhood breeders are typically pricing their dogs on the lower end, while quality breeders are typically charging on the higher end, its safe to assume that, yes, you will pay more for an English Cream.

Brief History Of American Golden Retrievers

All Golden Retrievers, whether they are American, Canadian, or English, originated in Scotland in 1868 where they were used as superior hunting dogs by sportsmen. The first goldens were registered with the British Kennel Club in 1903. Back then, they were listed as flat-coat goldens. The breed didn’t become popular in the U.S. until the 1920s when anything British was cherished, including dog breeds. In 1932, the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed.

English Golden Retriever Breed Standards Are Different Than American Breed Standards

AKC Registered English Cream Golden Retriever For Sale Fredericksburg ...

Weve already talked about how a golden retriever is a golden retriever, and how they got the name English Cream, but heres another chapter in that story.

The breed standards are different in the UK and in America.

In America, the breed standard for males is 23-24 inches tall at the withers and 21.5-22.5 inches for females.

In the UK, the breed standard is 22-24 inches tall for males and 20-22 inches tall for females.

So the UK is more accepting of shorter goldens, which is one of the common traits of English type goldens.

English Vs American Golden Retriever: Personality And Temperament

The Retriever breed is a favorite for a reason. Golden Retrievers are loyal and calm animals that love to hang out with their family companions. But there are some differences when comparing the personalities of American Golden Retrievers vs. English Golden Retrievers.

English Goldens are known to be calm and mature with proper training. They arent particularly hyper or overly energetic. By contrast, American Goldens are known to have more energy and be a bit more stubborn. Some owners also find that, prior to training, theyre a bit more boisterous in their behavior.

Recognition From The American Kennel Club Vs The British Kennel Club

Several countries accept the Golden Retriever as an official breed. The United States and the United Kingdom have specific breeding standards for Golden Retrievers. You can also find more standards from international dog clubs, such as the International Canine Kennel Club.

The American Kennel Club and the British Kennel Club recognize these dogs as versions of the larger Golden Retriever breed. The BKC made an effort to recognize the Golden Retriever in 1911, and the AKC followed suit and recognized it in 1925.

These organizations are non-profit clubs created to provide expert information and advice on dog breeds and their health and training. As such, the standards from these two kennel clubs play a major role in the agreed-upon differences between American Golden Retrievers and English Golden Retrievers.

Both the AKC and the BKC have their own breed standards, which are quite different from one another. Because of these differing standardsand the quest of breeders to meet these standardsthese two types of dogs have evolved with unique features.

The BKC lists the ideal features of the English Cream Golden Retriever, and the AKC lists the ideal features of American Golden Retrievers. Neither club recognizes sub-types of dog breeds, so they both list the Golden Retriever as a breed but with differing standards.

Besides their official recognition by these clubs, its also essential to understand how these dogs are referred to in different countries.

What Is A Platinum Retriever

The platinum retriever, also known as the English cream golden retriever and rare white European retriever, is a pale-coated variety of golden retriever.

While some breeders advertise platinum retrievers as a rare breed, these dogs are the same breed as regular American goldens.

While similar, these two types of golden retrievers are slightly different. Platinum retrievers have a pale coat, stockier built, bigger head, and rounder eyes. They are also calmer than American golden retrievers, but no less playful or fun-loving.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Shed A Lot

English Cream Golden Retriever Puppies for Sale

Many people claim that English Creams shed less than other goldens, but all goldens shed a good bit.

If shedding is a big issue for you, a golden retriever may not be your best bet.

That being said, there are two things you can do to help with this:

  • Consider looking for a golden retriever that has more of the field build than the show build .
  • Regularly brush your golden.

Are American Golden Retrievers Genetically Different From English Ones

    Somewhat.

Even though American Goldens descend from English lines imported to the U.S. via Canada, the breed evolved and developed differently than its English counterpart because it was bred according to the American Kennel Club standard rather than the standard of the Kennel Club of the UK. Let’s take a look at a few of the differences.

    Facial Structure And Features

    Head

Another obvious difference between English Retrievers and American Retrievers is the shape of their head. The American Golden has an arched head structure and a broader skull, while the English Retriever has a larger and more balanced head.

They both have wide foreheads, but the American Retriever has a longer and deeper one than its English cousin.

    Eyes

Their eyes also have slight differences. The American Golden Retriever has round eyes and fitted rims, with various shades, from medium brown to dark brown. If a dog doesnt have round eyes, then the AKC does not accept it as a Golden Retriever.

The BKC has similar standards, but they also require that the goldens eyes be reasonably distanced.

    Ears

American Retrievers and English Retrievers also have slightly different ears. The American Golden has ears with a front edge that extends a bit above their eye level, so the tips of their ears are at cheek-level.

In contrast, the English Retrievers moderate-sized ears sit at eye-level. According to kennel club standards, both types of Retrievers ears need to cover their eyes when you pull them forward.

    Neck

Finally, both dogs have a muscular neck thats not too long or short.

What Different Countries’ Kennel Clubs Say About Cream

Both Canada and the U.K. accept a broader range of coat colors within the golden retriever standard than the American Kennel Club does.

    U.S.

According to the American Kennel Club website, the standard coat color of the golden retriever is a “rich, lustrous golden of various shades.” The club further adds that the “predominant body color, which is either extremely pale or extremely dark, is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity.”

    Canada

On the other hand, the Golden Retriever Club of Canada seems more inclusive of pale dogs. They state that “the acceptable range of colour in the golden retriever is broad. While a medium gold is always correct, coat colour can range from cream to a darker coppery gold.” The Club adds that as long as specimens are within this color range, they should be judged equally.

    U.K.

The Kennel Club of the United Kingdom seems to agree with the Canadian club’s standard when it comes to cream coats. It accepts a golden retriever that is “any shade of gold or cream, neither red nor mahogany.”

The Golden Retriever has been recognized as a distinct breed for nearly a century.
