Caring For Your Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever Puppies For Sale

Golden Retrievers are usually real big softies and can make a great addition to a home. They are a popular pet for families, but be aware that they are prone to certain health conditions and you will need to make sure your pets been screened where possible to avoid them. Its also really important to keep your Retriever in shape, as they can easily become overweight.

Meet The Golden Retriever

These medium-sized retrievers weigh between 55 and 75 pounds, with the males being noticeably larger. They usually reach their full height by one year old, standing between 22 and 24 inches tall. However, they can continue to grow and gain weight for another year.

These working dogs are powerfully built, with sturdy, muscular bodies. Their broad heads feature wide-set dark eyes, large black noses, and folded ears. Their cream-coloured double coat is their most unique feature, consisting of a dense, water-resistant outer coat and a thick undercoat.

Their fur can be either wavy or straight with lots of feathering. The majority is on the chest, thighs, and tail, but there will often be some on the underbody and front legs, too. Golden Retrievers can be any shade of cream, yellow, or gold. Interestingly, their coats become paler as they get older.

The Golden Retrievers long, thick coat sheds significantly, especially in the spring and autumn. Youll need to brush them every one to two days to prevent tangles and mats, and you should bathe them once a month or so, too.

Golden Retrievers are prone to ear infections like other floppy-eared breeds, so regularly checking and cleaning inside their ears is vital. They are generally a healthy breed that will live for 12 to 13 years, but this breed has a higher cancer rate than other canines.

Golden Retrievers And Other Pets

Well-socialised Golden Retrievers are very easy-going, which usually means they can be great around other dogs and pets, too. Any introductions should be done carefully and following the right advice for your other pet, too.

Always supervise your dog with other pets, even if they have known them for a long time.

Are Comfort Retrievers Low Shedders

Our Comfort Retrievers® are reduced shed, especially when compared to Golden Retrievers. Shed levels are individual to the dog, so while we hope that the majority of our dogs are low shedding, there are those who are moderate to heavy shedders.

There are many factors that influence shedding as well. Some of these include season changes, weather, stress, illness, and a puppy transitioning to its adult coat. For these reasons, we cant guarantee your dogs shedding wont change over time.

A Brief History Of The Golden Retriever

The modern Golden Retrievers we know and love today are descendants of the first Goldens bred in mid-1800s Scotland. These Goldens resulted from a combination between the Tweed Water Spaniel, Bloodhound, and Yellow-Colored Retriever.

These original Goldens were bred to hunt and withstand the harsh winters of Scotland. Over the last 200 years, Golden Retrievers have been bred and refined to create different styles and variations of the great family dog we all adore.

The Temperament Of A Golden Retriever

The hallmark of the Golden Retriever is undoubtedly its friendly and gentle nature. However, its their mild temperament, tolerance, and adaptability that makes them a firm family favourite, especially those with young kids, as these pups are particularly fond of children.

Golden Retrievers are very social beings who crave attention from their owners and are super friendly towards strangers. They build strong bonds with their humans, who they will remain loyal to forever. They want to stay with their pack all the time, which, although cute, means you can never leave them alone for too long. In addition, they prefer to stay inside with the family, rather than outdoors on their own.

Goldens are among the most popular breeds, resulting in many inexperienced breeders pumping out these puppies. Unfortunately, their lack of knowledge and experience means many Goldens lose their gentle and friendly nature. Instead, they can be shy or aggressive due to bad breeding. This is why its essential to find a good breeder when buying a Golden Retriever.

Goldens can get over-excited when they see people and may jump up. While they do it to be friendly, you should not allow your pup to greet people like this. Luckily, you can easily teach them not to do it with simple obedience training. This is especially important if they are around children. While they are gentle, Goldens are pretty big dogs, so they could accidentally knock over a small kid if they are not well-trained.

Common Health Problems In Golden Retrievers

Like any purebred dog, Golden Retrievers may encounter some breed-related health problems throughout their lives. Often, Breed Clubs will also be able to provide advice on what tests your breed may need and where to get these done. Make sure the parents of your puppy have had the relevant health screening to reduce the chances of your puppy being affected by these upsetting conditions.

Golden Retrievers are amongst a group of breeds classed as Category Two by The Kennel Club. These are breeds of dog that have been highlighted as having points of concern visible features which, if exaggerated, might potentially affect the breed in the future and cause health and welfare concerns. For Golden Retrievers, this is because they can have short legs in proportion to their body and a tendency to become overweight.

Some of the conditions Golden Retrievers are more prone to developing include:

  • Ichthyosis a skin disease that causes thickening of the footpads and makes other areas of skin rough and covered with thick, greasy flakes that stick to the hair.
  • English Cream Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever Puppies for sale in UK

The English Cream Golden Retriever is a variation of the British Golden and is known for its distinctly pale coat. Sometimes called Rare White European Retrievers, English Cream Goldens are among the most coveted of all Golden Retriever types, often seen as sophisticated and elegant.

The English Cream Golden has a very pale cream to white coat shorter and thicker than standard American Goldens. They have a stockier build, with males standing around 21-24 inches tall and females standing approximately 20-23 inches. Adult male English Creams can weigh anywhere between 50-75 pounds, and females weigh about 45-70 pounds.

English Cream Goldens have lovable personalities with a calm, friendly nature. They are incredibly smart and easy to train, as well. With that said, English Cream Golden Retrievers are often more expensive than other types of Goldens because of their desirable appearance. Depending on the breeder, the average puppy can cost around $3,500. See our English Cream Golden Retriever puppies for sale for more information.

Types Of Golden Retrievers: Why There Are Really Only 3 Kinds

Everyone is familiar with the Golden Retriever, one of Americas favorite dogs. We all instantly recognize their smiling faces, long golden hair, and ever-wagging tails! In fact, according to the American Kennel Club, Goldens are the 4th most popular breed in the U.S.

You may know exactly what a Golden is, and some people claim there are 8 types, but did you know there are really only 3 types, and theyre all technically the same breed?

If youre looking to add a new member to your family, check out the three recognized types of golden retrievers and the five unofficial types of Golden Retrievers below.

    Bonsaviour Golden Retrievers Staffordshire

Golden Retriever Meets Puppies for the First Time

Our first pick of the litter is Bonsaviour Golden Retrievers, members of the Golden Retriever Club, located in Staffordshire, in the West Midlands of England.

They are a small, but reputable breeder that focuses on producing high-quality, pedigreed Golden Retrievers with an emphasis on good conformation, great temperament, and good health as close as possible to the breed standard.

All of their Golden Retriever puppies are born and raised in-home and are cared for as a part of their family.

Their pups receive lots of love and attention while socializing with other puppies and children, so you can rest assured they are well-behaved before being put up for adoption.

All of the puppies at Bonsaviour Golden Retrievers are properly vaccinated, dewormed, and microchipped, as well as put through health tests and DNA tests in order to ensure they produce only sound, healthy puppies.

In addition to that, all of their pups are kept on a natural diet of raw meat, quality vegetables, and additional vitamins.

Bonsaviours breeding dogs are carefully chosen dames and studs that have pedigreed bloodlines, which is why every one of their litters results in high-quality Golden Retriever puppies.

Because they are a small breeder, Bonsaviour focuses on quality, not quantity. They produce only around three to four litters per year, so if you decide to purchase one of their Golden Retriever puppies, you will need to place a deposit of £300 to reserve a puppy from an upcoming litter.
