Trained English Golden Retriever Puppies: A Start In The Following Areas:
Listed below is what we work on with these puppies. No puppy can be fully trained and dependable in any area until they are close to a year old. This program is just a start. However, it is a very good start for trained English Golden Retriever puppies who are only 10 to 12 1/2 weeks old.
1. House Training
We take away all indoor litter areas before puppies are 6 weeks old. Starting the week prior, we work heavily with them making sure that all of them are doing all of their business outside. We make use a doggy door for this initial training. Although most people dont have a doggy door, what we do in utilizing the door sets puppies up for success when the doggy door is taken away.
Weve found that puppies that are fluent with a doggy door and doing their business outside are highly motivated to get outside when they have to pee or poop. In fact, we believe that initial training done with a doggy door is better. Traditional house training depends on a persons getting a puppy out often enough. A doggy door is a fantastic tool for initial house training. We dont keep our puppies dependent on it. Rather, we gradually move toward puppies being house trained without it. These dogs are often referred to as “White Goldens” or ” English Cream Retrievers”, and have been featured many times on Jimmy Fallon as well as the movie Santa Paws. There are 2 major breed standards in the Golden Retriever world – one is the AKC and in the U.S. registry English Cream Goldens are registered as Golden Retrievers. However, in the KC the standard “English Cream Golden Retrievers” is the most common name given to the light colored European Goldens. The European Golden Retriever is a Golden Retriever with a boxier head and body, and light in color. The bottom line is that our English Cream Retrievers have the wonderful calm disposition of a Golden, with gorgeous looks – what more could you ask for as a family pet. We usually only have one litter /year. Our puppies are raised with love and undivided attention for 8 weeks. We do early neurological stimulation from Day 3 to Day 14, and then continued socialization and attention until they go to their furever homes. And full support from us for a lifetime. We At Summer Brook Are Breeders With High Health Standards
Our first non-negotiable standard in maintaining our reputation as quality English Cream Golden Retriever breeders is this. All of our breeding dogs must pass all health clearances .
Although fair hips and elbows with a grade 1 are acceptable for breeding according to GRCA , we have moved our bar a step higher. ALL of our dogs have hips in the good or excellent range and elbows that are graded as a 0 . We do YEARLY eye tests . Our dogs have had DNA tests suggested by the GRCA and we only breed combinations with at least one clear on each of the DNA tests so none of our puppies can be affected by Ichthyosis, PRA 1, or PRA 2. Health is #1.
Health Tested Golden Retrievers From 100% Imported Lines
Secondly, as Golden Retriever breeders who care about quality, health is of utmost importance. All of our English Golden Retriever parents have passed tests for hips, elbows, heart, and eyes and have had DNA testing. All of our dogs have passed with hip scores equivalent to either OFA excellent or good. We have no dogs rated as fair in any category. We started raising Goldens in 1995 when our 6 children were growing up here on our 23 wooded acres near Hillsdale Lake. Our children are now grown but continue to love the wonderful Golden Retriever and have dogs of their own.
Once you’ve had a Golden, it’s hard to be without one! At Risa’s Goldens, we raise an occasional litter of full English Creme Goldens. We also cross our American females with our English males for an English/American cross that we feel is a “best of both” combination. Our breeding dogs have hip, elbow, cardiac, and eye health clearances as well as top quality champion show bloodlines. Our puppies are fed Life’s Abundance, a top-of-the-line holistic, veterinarian-formulated dog food. Puppies are vet checked healthy and vaccinated before going to their new homes. Breeding Golden Retrievers From 100% Imported Lines
All of our Golden Retrievers are what are commonly referred to in the United States as English Golden Retrievers or English Cream Golden Retrievers. In Europe they are simply referred to as Golden Retrievers. I have heard many people refer to the imported Goldens as White Golden Retrievers. Though they are often a very light cream, they are never truly white. They range in color from the palest cream to a rich gold.
As breeders of English Golden Retriever puppies, one of our goals is to improve this beautiful breed in the United States. It has taken many years to get to where we are today. The picture above is our family in 2010 with some of our first dogs. Two were retired before ever breeding a litter. One of them had only one litter. We dont hesitate to retire dogs that dont live up to our very high standard.
Our main goal as English Golden Retriever breeders is to produce English Golden Retriever puppies who are structurally sound, healthy, and with biddable temperaments. Though we prefer the lighter cream color, color is only secondary.

Two Daughters Wanting Careers With Dogs
My oldest daughter Jenna wanted to be a vet for most of her young life. My younger daughter, Elise, was also wanting a career with dogs. At 12, Elise was unsure what career with dogs she wanted, but both girls had a big passion for animals. Together, they talked Darrell and I into a small breeding/show program that we thought would last only a few years. We began breeding initially purely for the love of our daughters.
The Reason For Our Success
I attribute ALL of this success to the same positive reinforcement program that we use with our 8-week old puppies. It works! Further and most importantly, our training methods produce puppies and dogs that WANT to work. I am more proud of my dogs happy attitudes in the ring than in their actual performance. All of my dogs love to train. Many of the dogs you see at obedience competitions have a do I have to? attitude. Not my Tara and Piper! Our training method builds a desire and love of working in dogs. This desire to please and to work is our primary goal at Summer Brook.
