How Old Is Archer The Golden Retriever Puppy

13 Things You Need For Your New Golden Retriever Puppy

More recently we had the opportunity to meet Archers litter when they were 4 weeks old and then again at 6 weeks to do temperament testing. Unless you get the opportunity to raise a litter of puppies its unlikely you will get to see much of the early stages of puppyhood.

We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around 7-8 weeks old.

How To Feed Puppy Formula To Your Newborn Puppy

Once you have figured out the formula, you need to think about how youre going to get the formula into the puppy. The best way is to use a bottle.

The size of the nipple would depend on the breed and size of the puppers.

The nipple for a Golden Retriever puppy, for example, is going to be far too big for a Chihuahua. For tiny little puppy babies you might want to invest in a bottle designed specifically for feeding tiny little animal babies, or, if youre on a budget, a syringe will do as well.

Once you have your formula and bottle ready, the next very important thing to pay attention to is feeding the puppy SLOWLY. The hole in the nipple should be big enough for the thick formula to drip out, but it should do so very slowly. The same goes for feeding with a syringe.

The last thing you want is for the pupper to get a bunch of formula in its lungs! Pups can also get formula in their lungs from not suckling in the right position, so make sure they are lying on their bellies with the bottle just a little higher.

Eight Week Old Baby Golden Retriever

After all those weeks of fast development, the puppies have transformed into independent little dogs that are ready to be homed!

An average weight for this breed at 8 weeks old is around 10-11 pounds.

They will be fully weaned, have basic potty and crate training, and have experienced a good amount of socialization.

The training process is far from over, though! The new owners will need to keep training and socializing them so that they mature into well-behaved adults.

Golden Retriever Puppy Waking At Night

Another problem that a lot of new puppy owners experience is night time waking.

There are a number of reasons puppies wake at night. They may be scared, in pain, or hungry.

Puppies may also wake at night because they are lonely and want attention, or because they need the toilet.

For the first few nights after you bring them home, keep your Goldens crate by your bed. This will reduce the risk of them waking out of fear and loneliness because they will see you and know they arent alone.

Puppies will need the toilet through the night when they first come home. So, if you arent using puppy pads, youll need to take them outside throughout the night to pee.

Try not to make nighttime trips out to the toilet too exciting. Otherwise, your puppy may start waking up and crying for your attention.

How to Take Care of a Golden Retriever
  • Pet your Golden Retriever firmly and avoid his face. Dogs dont usually like to have their faces touched, and when you are getting to know your new dog, he might not want you to pet his head. Dont put your face in any dogs face, including your own Goldens. If he begins licking his lips or yawning, it is a sign that you are too close, so back up.
  • Pat his side gently. Another way to pet your dog is to pat his side. Use firm but gentle pats. This will tell your dog that you are ready to play, so only do this when you are willing to let him expend some energy.
  • Use dog toys to engage your Golden Retriever. He will probably love a game of fetch or tug. Toss a ball or a Kong toy and let him catch it or run after it and retrieve it. You can also use a large rope or another toy that wont rip easily for a game of tug. One tip is to be the one who decides when these games are over. Teach your Golden to respect the command, all done, so he doesnt get the idea that he is in charge of when you play.
  • Teach your Golden simple commands. All dogs should know how to sit, stay, lay down, and come. These will keep him safe in many different situations. In addition, he should know how to walk on a leash. Go to a training class if you dont know how to teach these commands, or look for a good dog training book. If you are having trouble, hire a professional trainer to work with you and your dog.

What To Do If Puppies Are Born Dead

Of course, your bitch is likely to be sad, listless, and more reserved after having a miscarriage or losing a puppy after giving birth. Regardless of how or how many puppies die, it will be imperative that both the bitch and the surviving puppies be examined by a veterinarian. For this reason, we again recommend that your dog be accompanied by a veterinarian, who can try to revive stillborn puppies and provide the immediate help the dog needs to prevent any postpartum problems. In this other article, we talk about the resuscitation of newborn puppies.

If other puppies survive birth, it is also important that you observe the behavior of the female to avoid problems. Sometimes the mother can reject and even harm a puppy, especially after experiencing a traumatic experience or if she feels vulnerable. This behavior is natural and can occur for various reasons, being related to the survival instinct that all species have. For more information, you can consult this other article on Why do dogs eat their young?
