Golden Retriever And Labrador Retriever Coat Differences

Labrador Retriever vs Golden Retriever Difference

Easily distinguishable coats are what really make golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers stand out from one another. Golden retrievers are long-hair dogs with solid yellow fur. Nesters who decide to adopt a glorious golden will need to commit to regular bathing and grooming. By comparison, the low-maintenance Labrador retriever’s coat is short, dense and shiny perfectly designed to withstand the elements. Unlike its monochrome cousin, the lovely Labrador retriever’s coat can have a chocolate, black or yellow coloring.

Labrador Retriever Vs Golden Grooming

Both Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers love running, playing, swimming and rolling in mud, leaves, or anything new and interesting they may find on the lawn.

Let even a few days of this activity go by unaddressed, and it can add up to a pretty stinky, dirty dog!

Luckily, both breeds love the water, which can make bathing them much less of a challenge than it can be with other dog breeds!

One thing that can make grooming time easier on you: both Labs and Goldens are very social and eager to please, which means you will likely find you have an enthusiastic canine partner for your grooming sessions.

But the fact still remains that grooming will be a regular part of your life starting the moment you bring a Golden Retriever or a Labrador Retriever into your life.

You may also need to budget for professional grooming and hair trims to keep your dogs coat manageable seasonally, as this can be a bigger job to tackle on your own.

Finally, even with regular at-home brushing and grooming, you will need to be the type of person who is fairly tolerant of dog hair all over your carpet, flooring, car, and anywhere else you and your dog go together.

While Labs need a once weekly brush down unless they are grubby, Golden Retrievers will benefit from at least three times a week to keep that coat glossy and tangle free.

There is a nice guide to grooming your Golden Retriever here.

Training And Exercise Needs

When it comes to training and exercise, this dog is fun. Retrievers, in general, are some of the easiest dogs to train. That being said, the Golden and the Labrador do learn very differently so your puppy might be a tough puzzle.

Goldens learn best through repetition and they are hard workers. They will keep repeating a task until they get it right. They border on obsessive though and it is easy to overwork them so you need to be careful when training your dog.

Labs, on the other hand, hate repetitive tasks. They get bored easily by them and will simply wander away if forced to work on something for too long. Instead, they do best with a few short training sessions every day rather than one longer one.

Labs are also food motivated dogs. If you can tie their training sessions to their meals, you will likely have lots of success. Ask them to sit and wait before eating breakfast or dinner and use treats as a reward.

Your Goldador will fall somewhere in between these two dogs. You might have to wait and see which training method works best for your animal. Regardless, though, your dog will respond best to positive reinforcement. You should be ready to give out lots of kind words and cuddles for a job well done.

Plan to spend about an hour every day outside with your dog. If you do, youll be blessed with a calmer and happier pet in the house.

Labrador And Golden Retriever Mix Temperament

Its hard to predict the exact temperament and personality of any mixed-breed dog since there is no way to tell if your Goldador will take more after his Lab parent or vice versa. However, meeting the puppys parents can help you gauge their temperaments and give you a better idea of how your Golden Retriever Labrador mix is going to be.

Quick Retriever Breed Facts And History

Labrador retrievers have been Americas favorite dog breed for 25 years running. But Golden retrievers still hold their own, always landing within the top five.

Both retrievers share a common ancestor in the St. Johns Water Dog . This extinct breed originated in Canada and was exported from Newfoundland to England in the 19th century.

St. Johns Water Dogs were bred to help fishermen drag their nets across the ice. These retrieving traits have been passed down to the breeds modern day ancestors, making goldens and labs powerful swimmers.

Are Golden Retrievers Smarter Than Labradors

Golden Retriever VS Labrador Retriever- Which Breed is Best For You

Between Goldens and Labs, which is the more cunning of the two? A 1994 book by Stanley Cohen called The Intelligence of Dogs: A Guide to the Thoughts, Emotions, and Inner Lives of Our Canine Companions compared the smarts of Goldens and Labs. Per the information in that book, Labs were declared to be the seventh most intelligent dog whereas Goldens were called the fourth most brainy. That would mean Golden Retrievers are smarter according to Cohen.

The book is old though and is but one piece of research into the intelligence of dogs. The AKC mentions nothing about Goldens being smarter, so dont be discouraged if youre more interested in owning a Labrador. Both Retriever breeds are plenty smart and will continually impress you with their intelligence.

Are They Good With Other Dogs

Golden retrievers:

Their good-naturedness doesnt end with people.

Golden retrievers are great with other dogs.

We did a study and found that 31.6% of golden retriever owners currently have more than one dog, and 57% of those people have a golden plus another breed.

Labradors:

Like golden retrievers, labradors are known for being great with both people and dogs.

If you have or want a home with multiple dogs, labs and goldens are great candidates to be one of those dogs.

How Closely Related Are Golden Retrievers And Labradors

How much in common do the Golden and Lab share? To answer that question, lets examine the historical origins of both breeds.

Labrador Retrievers existed first, sometime in the 1830s. They were bred in Newfoundland by curious European settlers who combined the genetics of St. Johns Water Dogs with British hunting dogs. Labs were favored then by royals such as Sir John Scott, the Earl of Home, the Duke of Buccleuch, and the Earl of Malmesbury.

Golden Retrievers came from Scotland and were first bred midway through the 19th century. As the breed name tells you, Goldens could retrieve on land and in water. To produce the Golden Retriever, prior generations of retriever dogs were bred with water spaniels.

Okay, so there are no matches on the lineage. It doesnt seem like the two Retriever breeds ever intersected in those early days.

Goldens and Labs arent the only Retrievers, by the way. Other, lesser-known Retriever breeds include the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, the Flat-Coated Retriever, the Curly-Coated Retriever, and the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. These Retriever breeds are all recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Grooming A Labrador Retriever

Like the Golden, the Labrador also has a double coat. It consists of a soft undercoat that protects the dog in cold weather, and a top coat that is shorter in length than the Goldens. Also like the Golden Retriever, the Lab does shed its undercoat in warm weather.

Is grooming a Lab easier than grooming a Golden? Labs dont have the feathery furnishings on the ears, neck, and tail like Goldens, so those areas will need virtually no trimming. However, while their coat length is short, they do have a double coat that needs maintenance.

Labs require an undercoat rake to remove the dead hair from the undercoat. You can then use a slicker brush for an overall grooming, and some Lab owners like to use a comb on their dogs as a final step in the grooming process. Like Goldens, the coat of a Lab should never be shaved.

Nail trimming and ear cleaning should also be a regular part of your grooming routine. Labs generally need to be bathed less frequently than Goldens, which reduces the number of regular grooming tasks for potential owners concerned about overall maintenance time. In non shedding season Labs coats are less maintenance than Goldies, but what about moulting?

This article will discuss two extremely intelligent dog breeds: Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers. Both breeds have some characteristics in common, and their morphology, while different, can look similar from a distance. Both kinds of retriever dogs have a fairly similar build and used to fulfill a similar function, which is why they’re classified in the same type.

The closeness between the two retriever breeds means that many people don’t know exactly what differentiates one from the other. For this reason, we at AnimalWised will explain the biggest differences between Labrador and Golden Retrievers.

  • The History Of The Labrador Retriever

The labrador retriever is believed to have originated in Newfoundland and Labrador. They are a descendant from St. Johns Water Dog which was brought to these two islands by settlers during the 16th-century. Many characteristics of the St. Johns Water Dog can still be seen today in labs, such as their love for being in the water and retrieving things.

It wasnt until the early 1800s that the name Labrador was first used with this breed of dog. The original colors were black and yellow, although the chocolate lab came around in the late 1800s.

The Goldador And Its Grooming Requirements

Bathe your Golden Labrador when needed or when they start to smell. Since they are prone to skin problems, frequent baths can make their skin dry.

The floppy ears on these hybrids are also prone to infections, so you will need to clean their ears often.

For their pearly whites, brush their teeth once or twice a week to avoid dental issues. If you and your floor are getting scratches from your dog, its time to trim their nails.

Will you need a vacuum or allergy medicine?

Do Goldadors shed? Yes, youll be needing a vacuum.

These crossbreeds are moderate shedders, and their coats lose even more fur during the spring.

All this shedding means that the Goldador is NOT hypoallergenic. You might need to take allergy medicine if your heart is set on this adorable hybrid.

If your Golden Retriever Lab mix inherits the Labrador Retrievers coat, brush their hair once a week. If their hair is similar to the Golden Retrievers, comb their silky hair thrice a week to prevent tangling and matting.

Whatever their coats texture is, youll have to brush them daily during their shedding season, unless you want to spend all day vacuuming your house.

Labrador Retriever Vs Golden Retriever Training

Training your dog at the basics is a must, but what kind of training experience can you expect with a Labrador versus a Golden?

As we wrote about here, Labs are considered quite easy to train. They love the exercise, they want to make you happy, and theyre highly intelligent. With some treats and lots of verbal and physical praise, you can encourage a Lab to learn just about anything, even guarding.

Golden Retrievers also train with little difficulty provided you put the time and work in. These dogs are smart, ready to learn, and happy to work with you to nail down basic commands such as sit, stay, and lie down.

I highly recommend using an online training program to train your dog yourself, but with the guidance of a professional. This alternative to traditional training is both convenient as well as cost-effective.
