Other Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever

Golden Retriever, Puppies, Dogs, For Sale, In Virginia Beach, Virginia, VA, 19Breeders, Chesapeake

The good news for golden retrievers is that there arent many goldens without a home that need to be adopted the demand is greater than the supply.

Of course, thats not so great news for those that want to adopt a golden!

But if the rescues dont have any goldens available, here are two other ways to find goldens in need of a home:

The first way is to join your local golden retriever Facebook groups.

Sometimes people that can no longer keep their goldens will post in these groups asking if anyone can take them in.

These reasons can often include changes to the family, current family members didnt get along with the new pup, or other unfortunate circumstances.

The other way is to get in contact with your local golden retriever club.

People may reach out to them if they need to surrender their dog, or some of the members might know someone who has a golden they need to give up.

This may be a long shot, but if youre patient and determined to rescue a golden, it could be worth it.

And speaking of golden retriever clubs, when you do get your golden retriever, they can be a great resource for you.

Golden Retriever Adoption Process

  • An interested family fills out an application and mails it to the application coordinator. This step takes 1-2 days.
  • The coordinator will evaluate all applications and acknowledge the receipt of the application. During this phase, the coordinator might request extra information where necessary. The coordinator will then inform the coordinator responsible for home visits that the interested family is prepared for the home visit. GRREAT obtains 1000 applications annually. This step takes from 1-10 days
  • The visit coordinator will allocate the visit to an available volunteer wholl contact the applicant to schedule time for meeting the entire family. This step will take 1-10 days.
  • The volunteer will visit the interested applicant in the company of a dog. Theyll explain the adoption process through GRREAT and will answer and ask any questions that might arise. This will take 1-2 hours.
  • Once the visit ends, the volunteer will generate a report using a particular form. The form will indicate the family composition, dog savviness, and environmental details. These details enable a foster home to make a good match. This step will take 1-5 days.
  • The application coordinator will receive the visit report through mail. Upon reviewing it for completeness, the application coordinator will send it to the adoption coordinator. This will take 1-5 days.
  • When You Decide That This Is The Dog For You It Is Time To Begin The Process Of Learning About The Breed And Potential Pomeranian Puppies

You can find out a lot at the breeders home about the parents of the dogs that he has available for adoption. You can also ask about the dam and the sire, and about the offspring that have come before them. You may even get an idea of the dams characteristics from her offspring. Keep in mind that the breeder may also have information about any other dogs that have been in the litter and have come forward as potential golden retriever puppies.

The goal of the Golden Retriever Club of Virginia is to raise the standards of the breed so that they are recognized by the American Kennel Club. This club has made clear that breeders must meet a certain standard before they can join. It is also important to note that you should not purchase puppies from a breeder who cannot provide you with documents or papers that will prove their American Kennel Club membership. You need to know whether or not the animal has had a previous license.

Adoption Applications Closed For The Holidays

    Golden Retriever Rescue Virginia Beach

Interested adopters and SEVA GRREAT supporters:

During the winter holiday season we are going to temporarily paws the adoption process. We would like you to understand why, so here are the reasons.

First, it is very important for a newly adopted Golden to join his/her forever family when things are at their most “normal”. The holidays are anything but “normal” in most households ~ it’s a hectic time of year with more of everything ~ more traveling, more time away from home shopping and visiting, more guests, more food…and this can be very stressful for a new Golden family member.

Second, our dedicated volunteers are also busy with their families and need a well-deserved break during the holidays.

Also, many of the millions of homeless pets in North America are pets that were returned or abandoned as a result of an “impulse” buy. Since many pets are bought impulsively during the holidays, we support “no pet buying” over the holiday season.

Adoption applications are now closed and will reopen in the new year. Soon, we also will not be posting any dogs as available for adoption to our already approved families until after the holidays.

In the meantime, all the Goldens in our care are happily spending this time with their wonderful foster families and are safe and sound and happy ! They’re even probably sharing in the spoils of leftover turkey.

Can Golden Retrievers Be Left Alone

Golden retrievers are very social dogs and they dont like to be left alone for long periods of time.

They are also highly intelligent, which means they are smart enough to get into trouble if you leave them with nothing to do for hours on end.

Every golden is different, but as a general rule, they should only be left alone for a maximum of eight hours at a time.

Why Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

While there are many breeders out there creating amazing little golden retriever puppies out there for you to buy, there are also hundreds of thousands of golden retrievers across the country that need adopting. This is for a variety of reasons.

    • First, Goldens are very popular pets, so there are unethical breeders out there creating puppies for which they cant find homes.
    • Second, many people adopt a gorgeous little pup, only to realize that they grow into a big, shedding dog that requires lots of care and attention. They decide that they simply dont want them anymore.
    • Many loving pet owners need to give up their pets due to a family member who has allergies, moving to a place that doesnt allow animals, moving abroad, or other unavoidable circumstances.
    • Sadly, there are also people who die and leave their pets behind with no-one to care for them, or they simply abandon them.

These are the golden retrievers that find themselves in rescue centers, waiting for new homes.

OUR EXPERIENCE: We had friends buy a Golden Retriever with all the best intentions. Unfortunately, they learned that owning a Golden Retriever did not fit their lifestyle and ended up putting their dog up for adoption.

    Golden China Rescue Update

This is Golden. He’s an 8 year old saved from a slaughterhouse in China on January 20th. Half of his right ear was cut off to make dog ear soup. This dog has been through a lot and was rescued in a joint effort with China Rescue Dogs. When he arrived on May 12 in the United States, he was rushed to the emergency animal hospital with pneumonia and was nursed back to near full strength. He took a turn for the worse and it was discovered he has cancer and most likely needs a bone marrow transplant. At this point, he was too ill to fly in a regular jet and a private corporate jet needed to be found to fly him to our rescue and his waiting to adopt family in Ohio. Even if it is for a few hours, a few days, or a few weeks – we all wanted him to be with his true “meant to be” family. Thank God for non-profit Pilots N Paws who scheduled three different pilots and planes to bring GOLDEN to his family on May 29th.

What To Expect From Golden Retriever Rescue Centers

When you head to a golden retriever rescue center, expect to find a range of dogs that are identifiable as golden retrievers or golden retriever mixed breeds.

They will range in age from puppies to mature dogs and will have different levels of training and socialization.

The rescue center will provide the dogs with medical care, shelter, and training, and at the same time, look for suitable homes for each dog.

Expect the rescue center to ask you a number of questions to ensure you are ready to adopt a golden retriever. They will work with you and consider:

    • Whether your lifestyle will permit you to care for and spend quality time with a pet?
    • Whether you are prepared for the financial burden of caring for a dog for the next 10-15 years, including food, veterinary bills, and so forth?
    • Whether you have the facilities to keep a large dog like a golden retriever?

If you are a suitable candidate, they will then work with you to find the most suitable dog from the shelter for you to adopt.

Dont worry rescues will not place dangerous dogs, such as dogs that bite, in your home.

PRO TIP: If youre looking to adopt a Golden Retriever then you might want to talk to breeders. A reputable breeder will require the people who buy their puppies to return them if for any reason they are unable to continue caring for them. Reputable breeders will sometimes have dogs they are willing to adopt out.
