Why Do Golden Retrievers Chew Their Tails
When we hear Golden Retrievers, we usually think of a happy golden-colored dog running and playing. But just like human beings, they can also have psychological issues like stress, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder , separation anxiety and depression that cause them to chew their tails. Golden Retriever biting tail may also be due to boredom and loneliness. Two classic scenarios that will cause them to chew their tails are putting them in crates that are too small and; leaving them in the house alone.
How To Differentiate The Golden Retrievers Observing Their Full Coat
All types of Golden Retrievers have a unique structure and characteristics. Therefore, it is easier to distinguish them.;
However, sometimes their similarities may overcome the differences. And it becomes difficult to differentiate.
Thus, Embrace Pet Insurance has a general guideline that makes it easier to distinguish. The guidelines are as follows;
|American Golden Retriever|
|Dark golden to intense yellow coat||Lighter yellow or golden coat||Thinner hair coat with moderate golden to yellow color|
Furthermore, the best way to determine the color is the detailed observation of the coat of Golden Retrievers. However, close observation in certain areas helps to know the shade of your pet. The areas are:
- Behind the ears the color of the clump of hair behind ears is the shade of your Golden Retriever.
- Tip of ears
- Feathery hairs- the color of the thread of hair that strangles in the legs and tail of the Retrievers denotes their color.
Generally, the Golden Retrievers have very dense and soft fur. But sometimes, their coat may become thinner. Do you know the reasons behind the thinning of the hair coat in your Golden Retriever?

What About A Non
Some people consider non-fluffy golden retriever puppies to be less attractive compared to their fluffy counterparts.
While that may be true to a certain extent, having a non-fluffy type may be a blessing in disguise. This is because you have less hair to worry about. This means fewer grooming sessions for you as well.
The best grooming tool for a non-fluffy golden retriever is the bristle brush. It is less intense and is ideal for your pup.
Like his fluffy cousins, a non-fluffy Golden doesnt require any shaving or trimming. A weekly brushing schedule should do the job.
At this stage, expect the puppy to play with the bristle brush and chew it up.
Dont worry. That is the whole process of getting him used to it.
After a few sessions, he will be comfortable with grooming and will give you an easy time.
Other Factors To Consider
Reducing normal levels of shedding is pretty simple when you break it down, and weve discussed the main methods in which you can do this.
But what if the shedding isnt normal? Well, like all dogs, Goldens can sometimes shed beyond what is considered normal. And in some cases there can be an underlying cause for this.
For example, if your Golden has dry, irritated skin, this can sometimes be due to an allergy arising from the food theyre eating, fleas, or their environment. And in some cases, it could be related to stress, because dogs that are stressed can shed excessively.
So if you are concerned that the amount he is shedding isnt within the realms ofnormal then the best thing to do is contact your local veterinarian. They are going to be the best source of information here, and should be able to identify the cause and help you get it sorted.
Just keep in mind that normal shedding in a Golden Retriever is going to be higher than it is for a low shedding breed like the Norfolk Terrier for example. And, as mentioned, they do shed heavily a couple times per year. So an uptick in shedding is not always a cause for concern.
Do Golden Retrievers Coats Get Darker

What About Golden Retrievers And Allergies
Now, if youre looking for a golden retriever with a short coat for allergy purposes, you might be barking up the wrong tree.
For one, its not exactly the fur that causes allergic reactions.
Most people are allergic to dander , and possibly the saliva and urine .
So getting a golden with shorter fur wont necessarily help you if youre allergic to goldens.
There will still be dander everywhere, and theyll probably have a hard time not licking your face because theyre so full of love

Undercoat Rake: Gopets Dematting Comb
Another tool that you need for your Goldie is an undercoat rake. This tool has rake-like teeth that help pull loose undercoat. Its also useful in breaking stubborn mats and fixing tangles on the lush coat of a Golden Retriever.
For this, I recommend the GoPets Dematting Comb. This is an undercoat rake with two useful sides. Each side has different numbers of teeth to suit the density of your dogs coat. Also, it has sharpened inside blades that cut through mats.
Nevertheless, the tips of the rake are rounded and will not injure your Golden Retriever. I also like the non-slip and soft silicone handle that makes it easy to hold.
Lastly, each purchase of the GoPets dematting comb supports animal charities. For me, thats a great way to help less fortunate pets while keeping yours healthy and well-groomed.
The only thing that my Goldie doesnt like is the sound the tool makes whenever it cuts matted fur. Other than that, its a handy tool that will save you from the hassle of grooming. It provides a huge difference as compared to using a brush alone.

Fleas Ticks And Parasites
Fleas and Ticks cause your dog to be very itchy and uncomfortable, which leads to excessive scratching and hair loss.
Fleas and Ticks can be treated with flea shampoos or insecticides from your vet or pet store. Pet bedding and anything they lay down on must be go through the laundry. And you may need to do a very thorough cleaning of your home.
Do NOT take a dog with fleas to a dog groomer, as it may spread to other dogs.
Cleaning The Eyes And Ears
Unfortunately, ear infections are common among Golden Retrievers. Its their long floppy ears that leave no room for aeration that are typically to blame.;But fortunately, with a little care and attention, you can prevent such issues.
When you bathe your dog, take time to wipe inside their ears with a ball of cotton wool and some mineral water. In addition, white vinegar in warm water is also good enough for regular ear-wiping.
I squirt some cleaning solution in his ear, rub it with his ear closed, than clean the gunk out with a cotton ball after he shakes his head. NEVER use q tips!
Should you notice that your Golden is shaking his or her head or scratching the ears against a surface, its probably itchy. You should check for signs of infection or ear mites. Discharge and redness will eventually manifest with an infection.
When signs of infection or ear mites are identified, do a more thorough job by inserting five drops of mineral water into each ear canal. Let it sit for a minute before wiping it out with cotton wool.
If this routing ear-cleaning is done for three days without improvement, take your Golden to a vet. Discharge is always a sign of bigger problems and should be reported immediately to the dog doctor.
A little mineral oil and a ball of cotton wool should also be used to wipe the eyes. Just pay attention not to get it into your Goldens eye. Discharging eyes are also a sign of infection and should be checked by a vet.
