Dog 101: How Long Are Dogs In Heat For

Female Golden Retriever in Heat

Wondering how long your Golden Retriever will stay in heat?

A female dog she starts her heat cycles when she reaches about six months of age, and they continue throughout her life. So, your dog will be in estrus once about every six months which is when she will be receptive to mating.

A lot of hormonal changes take place during this time.

These changes cause pronounced differences in your dogs behavior which can indicate to you that shes, in fact, in heat. These include frequent urination, a swollen vulva, bleeding, increased nervousness, and alertness.

In this blog post, I will answer the question, How long are dogs in heat? in as much detail as I possibly can.

So, lets jump right in, shall we?

Lets start.

How Do I Know When It Is The Best Time To Mate My Dog

This can be difficult. Most dogs ovulate and are receptive around the eleventh day of estrus. The discharge is usually less bloody and the female will be actively looking for a male. The female may stand and present her hind end for the male to be mounted or may tuck her tail to the side. However, ovulation may occur either early or late during the heat cycle.

Golden Retriever Behavior After Neutering

Just like after spaying, you should keep your male Golden calm for up to 5-7 days after his neuter procedure. This will help decrease the risk of his scrotum becoming swollen and allow his incision to heal properly. Your veterinarian will guide you on if they want to see him again after the surgery to remove any stitches. They will also prescribe you pain medications to give him for a few days. If your dog starts to lick at his incision, you will need to put one of those cones of shame on him to prevent his incision from becoming infected.

If your dog had some aggressive-type behaviors or was old enough to want to seek out female dogs prior to getting neutered, you may notice those behaviors subside after he is neutered.

Neutering does not necessarily stop your dog from marking things, such as when they spray urine on objects. This is a learned behavior. If your dog had already started marking things with their urine, neutering them will not necessarily stop this unwanted behavior.

So When Do Golden Retrievers Have Their First Heat

When Do Golden Retrievers Go into Heat?

Well, her heat cycle usually kicks off when she is around 10 to 15 months old, but bigger breeds can start from 18 to 24 months. Smaller breeds might go into heat as earlier as 6 months, especially when they are around other dogs in heat. If she goes beyond 24 months without having her first cycle, then make sure a vet examines your dog as soon as possible to determine whats potentially wrong with her.

Whats great about this kind of dog is that she will, often than not, have regular cycles after her first heat cycle. Tracking her heat cycles can help prevent unwanted pregnancy or prepare for it. And in line with, you need to keep in mind your Golden Retriever should not be bred the first time she goes into heat. Its recommended to consider breeding when she is at least in her second or third cycle and after she has been checked by a vet.

Keep A Heat Cycle Calendar

The more organized and up-to-date your Golden Retriever estrous cycle calendar will be, the greater your dogs chances are in becoming pregnant. Take note of when you start seeing changes in your Golden Retrievers behavior or genitalia. In about 2 weeks, your Golden Retriever will be in an optimal time period to mate.

When To Spay And Neuter Golden Retrievers

In recent years there have been newer recommendations put out for large breed dogs, including Golden Retrievers, on when to spay and neuter. Now it is recommended that you wait until your Golden is at least 18 months old before spaying or neutering them.

The reason to wait until your Golden is at least 18 months old prior to spaying or neutering is to ensure they have a chance to fully go through their version of puberty. A recent study suggests this can decrease the risks of bone and joint abnormalities as your Golden grows.

The information from this study came from the on-going Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, supported by the Morris Animal Foundation. If you are interested in contributing to the research helping to understand the development of cancer and other health conditions in Golden Retrievers, you can voluntarily participate in this study with your dog.

Up until recently, it was recommended that dogs be spayed and neutered before they are able to reproduce. For female dogs, this means before they go into their first heat cycle.

In addition to preventing your dog from getting pregnant, another reason it was highly recommended to spay before their first heat cycle was to prevent mammary cancer. Studies have shown that spaying your dog prior to their first heat cycle can drastically decrease the risk of them developing mammary cancer later in life.

Prepare Male Pups For Breeding

As stated above, its better to avoid breeding male pups. But, if you want your pups to breed in the future and dont want them to get startled by the idea of breeding, youll need to get them used to the act of touching. This is something you can do on your own. For instance, you can touch their mouth, feet, ears, nose, or genitals. Doing so will make your pups accustomed to the idea of touching, and thus, they wont freak out when you will leave them with another dog for breeding purposes.

Please note that you can do this with your female Goldies as well.

When To Neuter A Male English Golden Retriever

Two Golden Retriever First Heat

I am personally much more unsure and therefore flexible about when to neuter a male. Ive read that it is good to neuter them around the same time as a female to keep them from becoming dominant. Ive also read that you should wait until they mature fully or they will have behavior or health problems after neutering them. Because of this extreme controversy, I really dont have a strong opinion either way.

If it were me, I would probably neuter him somewhere in the middle around 1 1 1/2 years of age. The main;danger in waiting until your male is fully grown to neuter him is that he may be prone to find a soul mate. Whenever a female goes into heat here, our wonderful, sweet, obedient and loving boys becomeobsessed and even seemingly possessed. They are not themselves. They will do whatever they can do to get to the female, even if that means breaking out of their enclosure.

If there is an intact female anywhere near where you live and she goes into full estrus, then beware because your male will do whatever he can to get to her. That could obviously be very dangerous, because he could get run over, stolen or produce a litter of pups.

How Old Is Too Old For Goldens To Breed

Most kennel clubs would not accept an application to register a litter of puppies if the female was 8 years old or older at the time of breeding. For registering purposes, female goldens should not be bred after they turn eight years old.;

As far as health goes, it depends on each dogs health status to determine when to stop breeding. Most breeders retire their female goldens when they are 5-8 years old. Female dogs do not have menopause, so they can technically keep reproducing into old age. However, more health complications arise in older dogs, so it is unwise to keep breeding females over 8.

The guidelines for male goldens are less stringent. If studs are healthy, they can keep breeding for a long time. Healthy Golden Retriever males often remain fertile well into old age.;

However, as males age, their sperm count goes down. It makes it harder for them to get females pregnant. Similarly, males can develop arthritis and other age-related conditions which makes it harder for them to mount females and impregnate them. Owners can visit their vet to check their studs sperm counts and overall health status to determine if they can still breed effectively.;

Is Spaying And Neutering Safe

Spaying and neutering are very safe procedures. It is one of the most common surgeries performed on dogs. The majority of veterinary clinics offer this service. Spaying and neutering can also be done at a variety of local low-cost clinics.

Complications related to spaying and neutering are very rare. For large male dogs who are difficult to keep calm, a complication that can sometimes happen after their neuter is a swelling of their scrotum. It will make it look like they were not actually neutered and as if they still have testicles.

This can happen if your dog is too hyper after surgery. It can also sometimes happen if a tiny blood vessel begins to leak into the empty scrotum. It is nothing to worry about. The swelling will eventually subside, but it can take many months to look completely normal.

Doggy Pants Can Be Wonderful

Bleeding is one of the problems that owners may feel uncomfortable during the heat cycle. Even though your dog cleans the discharge by itself, the menstrual cycle-bleeding may cause staining on your beds, furniture and where ever your dog goes.

Specialized Doggy pants would be the best solution for this. After my research, i found the best ones for your dog. Some dogs may not prefer wearing these pants in the beginning. But it is easy to habituate your dog to these pants so that the house does not become messy due to bleeding.

These doggy pants even help in masking the scent of your female Labrador, that helps male dogs to stay away.

So you just brought home a female Golden Retriever puppy, congratulations! There are many wonderful and adventurous times ahead of you, as well as some very responsible decisions for you to make. One of those responsibilities is deciding when to spay a Golden Retriever.

There are many conflicting arguments about what age is best for spaying your Golden Retriever. Vets, breeders and dog owners will all have different opinions, which will probably leave you feeling confused!

For decades vets have always recommended spaying your dog around 6 months or earlier, but recent studies have shown that early spaying can be detrimental to your dogs health.

Spaying early affects your puppys bone growth and increases the risk of developing hip dysplasia, and spaying, regardless of when it is done, has shown to increase your dogs risk of developing certain cancers.

Studies now suggest waiting later to spay, or possibly leaving your dog intact. Leaving your dog intact is not everyones best option, the other option is an ovary-sparing spay.

In this article, we will discuss how spaying affects your dogs risk of cancer, as well as bone development. We will look at the pros and cons of spaying, and discuss options such as ovary-sparing spay.

Do Male Dogs Experience Mood Changes After Being Neutered

As we mentioned before, the primary benefits of having your male dog neutered lie in an overall reduction of the odds that they develop a wide range of canine cancers. While male dogs who are neutered do experience an increase in aggressive behaviors right after the procedure, neutering can make them much less aggressive over time. In fact, neutering has bee proven to create a much happier and calmer male dog over time.

One of the huge determining factors as to whether your male dog will become more aggressive after being neutered is the type of breed they are. Certain dog breeds are naturally more aggressive than others, so the temporary imbalance in hormones that neutering causes can spike aggressive behaviors in male dog breeds that are predisposed to violent tendencies in the first place.

The most obvious physical change that your male dog will go through is the removal of their testicles; however, once the incision scars heal, its barely noticeable. Neutering your dog is great because it bolsters improved health and a longer life overall.

The Average Age Female Dogs Go Into Heat

When a female dog enters puberty, she begins her first estrus cycle. Estrus is when your dog goes into heat, and it’s a period during which she is able to become pregnant. When your dog is in heat, her vulva enlarges, and she may leak a bloody discharge from the vagina and mark territory with her urine to advertise her fertility.

Ensure That Your Golden Retrievers Are Safe When Breeding

Most novice breeders think that their dogs know what to do once they come together to mate. However, thats not always the case. If its the first time for both male and female Goldies, then mating can be quite a challenge, given that they both are inexperienced. As a result, they can injure themselves in the process.

Bear in mind that the male retrievers are more at risk since they are trying to grab the females attention. And if the female retriever is not ready, she can be quite aggressive and may attack the male Goldie in response. Some female Goldies may not even be open to the males advances and may reject the male Golden Retriever.

Male Goldies that are full of excitement and energy may also hurt the female while mating. In the heat of the moment, male Goldies might not be able to control their emotions and may injure female Goldies. Another instance where a male Goldie may end up hurting a female Goldie is when they are inexperienced. Its possible for your Golden Retriever to be unsure of how to go about mating. As a result, it may get frustrated and take out its frustration on its mating partner. Hence, breeders need to keep a close eye on the mood and behavior of both the male and female Golden Retrievers.

How Often Do Dogs Go Into Heat

A dog’s heat cycle recurs roughly every 6 months for unspayed female dogs until 8 to 10 years of age. Nielsen says in her experience, “They seem to show a preference for spring and fallwhen the days lengthen and then when it starts getting cooler.” The first heat cycle, Nielsen explains, will be light and owners may be thinking This is easy! No big deal.“But when the second cycle comes, it’s Holy crap!” Nielsen says.
