Consider The Areas That You Will Be Vacuuming

Its a much easier task to remove a short-haired pets loose fur from a hardwood floor, than it is to suck out what seems like half a cat from a carpeted cat tree or the deep folds of an upholstered couch. Thats why its important to consider where youll be vacuuming before choosing a machine. A vacuum with incredible suction and a price tag to match could be overkill for routine jobs.

If Fluffy or Fido routinely sheds anywhere and everywhere, be sure the pet hair vacuum you choose performs equally well on floors, carpet, upholstery and in cars , has strong suction, and comes with appropriate tools to deep clean fabrics and can get into cracks and crevices.

If not, you can make do with a pet hair vacuum with lower suction levels or maybe even a regular vacuum cleaner. Additionally, consider how large an area youll be cleaning, since a portable model may not have enough battery power to do the job without pausing for a recharge.

How To Select The Best Vacuum Cleaner For Removing Pet Hair

best vacuum for golden retriever hair

The foremost thing that you should consider when buying a vacuum cleaner for removing pet hair is suction power.

Make sure that the vacuum cleaner has sufficient power to remove hair from places like carpet and upholstery easily.

Another thing you should consider is the type of surface that can be cleaned using the vacuum cleaner. Make sure that your vacuum cleaner of choice is compatible with the surface.

Some vacuum cleaners are suitable for only carpets and upholstery, while others can clean both hard and soft surfaces.

You should also consider whether you want a portable or upright vacuum cleaner. Portable cordless vacuum cleaners are lightweight and easy to use. On the other hand, they are less powerful than upright corded vacuum cleaners. The vacuum cleaners wont do a thorough job in cleaning soft surfaces like carpets.

You must also consider whether you want a vacuum cleaner that can clean just the pet hair or also stains. The multi-purpose vacuum cleaner can clean both the pet stains and hair. But they are a bit expensive.

Lastly, you should consider whether you want a vacuum cleaner with a steam or suction cleaning process. The former is more through in removing spots from carpet and upholstery, but it can also damage the surface if you are not careful.

The Rug Doctor Portable Spot Cleaner has received a lot of positive reviews due to ease in cleaning dog hair. The vacuum cleaner can easier clean the pet hair, dirt, and grime.

What Else We Tested

We tested 13 vacuums for this guide. These are the ones that didnât make the cut.

What else we recommend and why:

Bissell MultiClean Allergen Lift-Off Pet, Model 2852: This and the Bissell CleanView Swivel Rewind were the best upright vacuums we tested. We decided to include the CleanView Swivel Rewind because itâs more affordable and did a better job of picking up pet hair. Still, if you find the MultiClean Allergen Lift-Off Pet on sale for cheaper, consider picking it up, especially if your home is heavily carpeted.

Bissell ICONpet Edge, Model 2894A: The ICONpet was easy to use, had one of the longest battery runtimes, and charged the fastest. It also did a great job of sucking up cat litter and flour on furniture in its handheld configuration. Emptying the dustbin was mess-free. However, it left behind 23% of the pet hair on carpet and furniture.

Dyson V15 Detect: At $700, this is the most expensive model we tested. It has a bunch of fancy, high-end features, such as a screen that gives you a rundown of what size and how much particulate matter it sucked up. It did a great job of cleaning all of the surfaces, except it left behind traces of pet hair on carpeting and furniture. I liked that the battery charged in under four hours, but it only lasted for eight minutes on top power. I also found the unit was tiring to hold in handheld mode, and I didnât like that I had to keep the trigger depressed for it to run.

What we donât recommend and why:

The Dyson V8 Cordless Vacuum

Dyson states that the charge on the latest model the Dyson V8 lasts a full 40 minutes which really does make it a realistic alternative to a mains powered machine.

If you need to save all your cleaning for a Saturday morning, the V6 is probably not the right choice for you. As I work from home however, this is not a problem for me.

I am still waiting for my holder to be installed on the wall, so at the moment the Dyson takes up space on a table top of counter near to a plug socket for a couple of hours each day.

Occasionally, if I have a cleaning slurge and vacuum intensively, my cordless Dyson gets overheated and cuts out. It cools down quite quickly though, and once it does, it can be charged or used again.

Canister vacuums usually offer greater maneuverability over close edges compared to the upright vacuums. PROS

While very lightweightand easy to maneuver, the PowerEdge Pet generates great suction for its size. Most users report that it vacuums dog hair, cat litter and most other debris without trouble.

CONS

The PowerEdge Pet is only effective on hard floors. Additionally, some users have reported that the wheels may collect hair and become tangled easily. If the wheels stop spinning freely, they may damage the floors in your home.

Customer Review

I have two German Shepherds, so I could vacuum every day and not keep up with it. I have tried virtually every pet hair vacuum on the market with various results.

I was very pleased with how this vacuum worked. With other so-called pet vacuums I may have to go over an area two or three times to get the hair up and this got it on the first sweep even in places where was heavy . The canister is also large which is a big helpAnne Masterson

Best Value Canister Fantastic Performance And Price

Bissell Zing Bagless Canister Vacuum

Although this model isnt specifically designed for households with pets, its worth including due to its great performance, low price and rave reviews.

Views are mixed as to exactly how effective it is on deeply embedded hairs, with some reviewers commenting it can collect around the head before having to be pulled off but others have had no such issues. But all agree it removes hair well from carpets!

Regardless, this pet hair vacuum cleaner offers excellent value for money and generally high performance.

Its particularly effective on hardwood floors although can be adjusted for carpets too with a suction power to rival that of more expensive units.

Top features:

Bad points

  • Noisy The motor is loud in comparison to some of its competitors. Though in fairness its part due to its impressive suction.
  • No beater bar/brushroll It may be worth investing in this attachment separately if you have some seriously ground in hair to remove from carpets.

Miele Dynamic U1 Cat And Dog Upright Vacuum

Miele is one of the prestige names in the vacuum industry, and it has the prices to prove it. This model is the most expensive of all the pet hair vacuums on our list, and while it has huge suction power and does a terrific job at collecting the most stubborn clumps and stray hairs, were not sure its worth more than the Dyson Animal 2.

One big advantage the Dynamic U1 does have over its competitors, including the Dyson, is that its extremely quiet which can be important to those with skittish pets.

The operation of this machine is as convenient as youd expect from a Miele product its cool swivel neck technology lets you steer the machine just by twisting your wrist, and the body of the vacuum can be lowered down to the floor to get all the way under furniture. A handheld turbo brush comes with this model. One more plus: the always-solid Miele construction and engineering.

Filtration is via an SF-AA30 Active AirClean system with activated charcoal which removes pet odor from the air as well as allergens it works almost identically to HEPA filtration, but you can also buy an optional HEPA filter if youd like. The review team considers the U1 Cat and Dog to be a better choice for pet owners than the Miele Twist that some experts recommend because the Cat and Dog has the Active filtration system while the Twist has a lesser, standard AirClean filter. Dirt collection is in self-sealing bags.

Eureka As2130a As One Pet Bagless Upright Vacuum

Best Vacuum for Pet Hair [2021 Review]

This is a slightly older model and replaced by the Eureka NEU180B at position number 3.

Isnt there a decent, cheap pet hair vacuum out there? Yes, there is, even though were not quite sure we understand its name. This Eureka model comes in at a very affordable price it uses the companys multi-cyclonic technology, plus a design which limits twists and bends in the air path, to provide enough suction to collect most stubborn pet hair particularly on carpets.

The AS2130A is quite lightweight but that makes it easy to use and to be maneuvered into tight spaces. It comes with a PET Power Paw for deep cleaning of pet hair as well as a pet dusting brush.

Note as a budget option you could also consider the Bissell 9595A CleanView model discussed below.

This is a relatively-noisy vacuum without HEPA or other special filters, but it does clean up pet hair well and is the best alternative at the lower price level.

Eureka Neu180b Lightweight Upright Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaner

Eureka has come out with a model thats designed for the challenges of pet hair. While it doesnt have any special technology inside , the NEU180Bs rotating brushes provide strong suction and still do a very good job cleaning up after Fido or Fluffy. Add in the moderate price and light weight of this vacuum just ten pounds and you have an alternative well worth considering.

There are some nice features being offered. The dust cup on this bagless vacuum is extra large, and no maintenance is required other than a regular rinsing of the filter. You can choose from five height positions with the twist of a dial, so you can adjust the machine for optimal vacuuming of carpet, rugs, hardwood and even tile.

Theres a stretch hose that extends to four times its regular length and an extra-long crevice tool, in addition to the brush and upholstery tool that come mounted on the vacuum. Unfortunately, though, theres no HEPA filtration. The unit is available in four colors: graphite, blue, green or purple.

The NEU180B may not be the ideal choice for a home you share with a long-haired Yorkie or Maine coon, but its a good well-performing, portable option for cleaning up normal pet hair.

Facts and figures for the Eureka NEU180B Lightweight Upright Pet Hair Vacuum Cleaner:

  • Dimensions: 44.5 x 13.5 x 14 inches
  • Suction power: Not available 8 amp motor
  • Bin Volume: 0.67 gallons

What Can You Realistically Afford To Spend

Last but by no means least is how much you want to spend on your purchase. Prices between different models vary wildly but its generally always a significant purchase for the average household.

Weve all fallen foul of inadvertent overspending now and then so its good to have a spending strategy before you even start looking at your options.

After all, if you look at a $300 item for long enough, the numbers soon start swimming and suddenly the $350 version doesnt seem like much of a stretch! Of course, then the $400 version draws closer too

You should set a ceiling of your uppermost budget before you start looking, promise to stick to it and youll find the buying process much more straightforward.

However, having said that

The Difference Between A Normal Vacuum And One Designed For Pet Hair

For the most part, standard vacuums are designed with a 2 part brush and hose mechanism, meaning theyre brilliant at picking up normal house-hold dust and dirt. The brush is there to stir up any particles, which the hose then sucks up into the hoover bag or dust compartment.

But heres the catch:

The problem with this design when it comes to pet hair is that instead of the brush stirring up the hair, it actually makes the situation worse by pushing it into fabrics and carpet even further.

And even if you do manage to get any of the hair up, the most likely outcome is it will get caught up in the head of the brush rather than going into the hose.

Vacuums designed specifically for pet hair are different:

  • They are much more efficient at removing fur from fabrics and carpets because they come equipped with silicon brushes instead of the more common soft brush on a standard vacuum.
  • Better filtration and more powerful suction are also a big plus for the specialist vacuums, because theyre great at removing dander from the air expelled by the cleaner, meaning its much easier to keep a house with pets nice and clean.
