Do Golden Retrievers Need Another Dog As A Companion

Golden retrievers are sociable animals that will get on well with other dogs and also cats, which means they make a great second pet. But no, a golden does not require another dog as a companion.

And just because you have another dog will not mean that your dog can be left alone for longer periods of time.

Sneaky Ways To Find A Rescue Golden Retriever

If Seattle Golden Retriever Rescue doesnt have a Golden for you, and none of the rescues in nearby states do either theres still hope!

There are three other ways you might be able to find a Golden who needs your home.

The first way is to scour your local animal shelters.

Yes, its a long shot, but you might get lucky and find a Golden Retriever there.

You might also fall in love with another dog who needs your home!

The next way is to keep an eye out on your local Golden Retriever Facebook groups.

Ive seen several people post in there trying to find a new home for their Golden that they can no longer keep.

People are all over these posts, so youll have to be quick to reply.

Also, be sure to watch out for scammers!

The next way to find a Golden who needs your home is to get involved in your local Golden Retriever club.

The members there might have insider info on a Golden who needs to be rescued.

This is another long shot, but it could be worth it.

The more Golden Retriever lovers you know, the more likely you are to find one of your own.

And speaking of Golden Retriever Clubs

Can Golden Retrievers Be Left Alone

Golden retrievers are very social dogs and they dont like to be left alone for long periods of time.

They are also highly intelligent, which means they are smart enough to get into trouble if you leave them with nothing to do for hours on end.

Every golden is different, but as a general rule, they should only be left alone for a maximum of eight hours at a time.

How The Pslra Rescue Program Works

Golden Retriever Rescue Washington

Our rescue program has from the very beginning been affiliated with Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue. This provides PSLRA with liability insurance and many support services. Labradors come in to the Rescue program in two ways.

  • Stray Labradors who have been turned into Puget Sound area shelters are held by animal control for three days, not counting the day of impound or any days the shelter is closed.
  • If not claimed by their owners, the dogs are then made available for adoption.
  • At this point, we can refer potential adopters, , directly to the shelter to adopt the dog.
  • If a purebred Labrador is not placed directly from the shelter, we can rescue the dog and put him/her in one of our foster homes while we look for a new home.
  • Usually, younger Labradors are adopted right from the shelter, and the ones in need of foster care are older dogs.
  • Owners who want to release their Labrador for adoption can list the dog through Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue. We then try to match the Labrador with one of the families from our waiting list.
  • Families wanting to adopt a rescued Labrador must fill out an adoption application with Seattle Purebred Dog Rescue.

Will Your Rescue Golden Be Ready

Golden Retriever, Puppies For Sale, In, Kent, Washington, WA, Bainbridge Island, Mercer Island, Mapl

One of these days you will be returning to work ! Will your dog be as ready as you are?

A favorite quarantine joke: Dogs everywhere think theyre in heaven. Their humans are home 24/7. Cats are contemplating suicide.

Funny, and with a great deal of truth. In fact, our pets are seeing way more of us these days as we shelter in place, and the routines that normally shape and inform their lives have all but disappeared. Dogs especially rely on those daily routines to give them comfort and security a sense that all is well in their world. Based on the good advice of science-based professional trainers and behaviorists, there are some things we can do now to ease the transition when we return to jobs and other activities outside the home.

Many doggy day-cares and dog walkers are temporarily closed, but if yours is operating safely and thats part of Fidos normal routine, consider using their services once a week or so .

Try to keep the pattern of your days consistent meals, walks, play time, etc happening at predictable times. Dogs sleep 10-12 hours a day, much of it when we are absent. If your normally tranquil home is suddenly a beehive of activity, especially if children are around, make sure your dog has a quiet place to safely retreat for well-earned naps during the day.

Tips For Caring For Rescue Dogs

You might want to take a look at our new puppy checklist before bringing home your new puppy. While our list focuses on puppies youll find a lot of items youll also need for a rescue dog.

Unlike brand new pups adopted from responsible breeders, rescue dogs often come with behaviors and habits from their previous homes that may or may not be suitable for their new home with you.

There are a few things you can do to make your dog feel comfortable in your home quickly and start learning new house rules without delay.

Golden retrievers in particular are very intelligent pups and should have no problem adapting if you do a few smart things.

    • Dogs, like children, thrive on regularity, so create a schedule for them. Establish regular eating and exercise times, so they learn to know what to expect.
    • Reward your dog for correct behavior by treating them with food or play. Dont yell or punish. Your dog can develop a negative reaction to this, especially if they have been punished by previous owners.
    • Make sure everyone in the house is giving the same commands and following the same rules. It can be confusing for dogs when people use different commands for the same behavior, or when different behavior is acceptable with different members of the household.
    • If they are not house trained, have them sleep in a crate, but not alone. It is better to place the crate in someones room. They can stop sleeping in the crate when they can consistently hold it the whole night.
