What To Look For In A Golden Retriever Breeder

When looking for a Golden Retriever breeder, consider these factors:

  • A reputable breeder will take their breeding dogs to the vet for regular visits. If they do not, you shouldnt work with them.
  • You should look for a breeder who is willing to work with you after you get the dog. Then, you can ask questions about the dog or dog care.
  • Its important to look for a breeder with experience. Consider how many litters they have each year and how they breed their dogs.
  • Make sure you know the health history of the parents and their close relatives. That way, you can get a healthy dog.
  • If you dont want your dog to breed or participate in a competition, look for a breeder who wont ask for your dog to do those things.

The right Golden Retriever breeder depends on you as a person, but any good breeder should be able to answer any questions. If you dont feel 100 percent confident in a breeder, theyre not the right fit.

Avoid Puppy Sales Scams

When looking for a Golden Retriever puppy, be incredibly careful. You may come across the perfect puppy online, but do not commit to any dog until you can visit in person. The dog may be totally different than in their photo.

In some cases, you may find that the dog does not exist. Some scammers can take photos from other dogs and collect payment for the dog. But the scammer will disappear before the buyer realizes the dog is not theirs.

To avoid these puppy sales scams, always visit the dog in person before you sign a contract or make a payment. Make sure the dog looks like the pictures and that they have the temperament that you want.

If you are working with a breeder, be sure to check their credentials and ask for references. You can speak to other dog owners who have gone through the breeder. Finally, do not rush into getting a dog. Even though you may not want to wait, you want to choose a dog thats right for you.

What Are The Golden Retriever Colors

The breed was first considered to be a yellow variety of Flat-Coated Retrievers but was recognized as a separate breed, the Yellow or Golden Retriever, in 1912. A few of these dogs had come to America by way of Lord Tweedmouths sons by 1900, but the AKC did not register them as a separate breed until 1927.

On average, a healthy Golden Retriever can live between 10 and 12 years. The average yearly cost of raising a large breed dog like the Golden is around $1,080 or $90 a month, though the first year of doggy parenthood is often much more expensive.

In fact, owners reported that the first year of raising their dog cost them around $3,625.

This means that if you raise a Golden Retriever from 0 to 12 years, you will be investing at least $15,505 into your dog, though youll likely be spending a few thousand more.

But why, and where do these estimates come from? Lets take a look.

The Story From The Dogs Side

OUR DOGS: So where does your new pup come from? The number one source for our dogs is owner turn-ins. The top reasons people turn dogs in are because a family is moving, experiencing financial distress, have no time for the dog, or owner health issues. Our second source is dogs from shelters. Lastly, we are called on directly at times to take in strays. On some occasions, we receive calls from contacts outside of Florida needing assistance with re-homing dogs from other shelters or rescue situations.

VETERINARY REQUIREMENTS: The first stop for your prospective new family member is to one of our vets. The dogs are checked out, nose to tail, and any problems noted. They are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and vaccinated. As the microchip registry will list GRRMF, it means you have an ally in locating a lost dog if that should happen. Any known physical problems will be dealt with and any continuing health issues will be disclosed to you prior to you making a decision on adopting.

Adopting a Golden Retriever? | What to Expect

You can expect to pay for the vet each year so that your dog can remain up to date with their shots. An annual visit can also make sure your dog is healthy, but you may want to take your dog in more often if they get sick or have other problems.

A routine vet visit costs about $100 for a simple visit, but getting vaccinations and other treatments can increase the cost to $300 or so. The average cost for shots for your dog is $15 to $28, and a fecal exam costs $25 to $45.

Flea treatment can cost $16 to $30 for a flea comb and flea shampoo. You can also get a combination medication to treat fleas and ticks for $50 every three months. A three-month supply of heartworm medication costs about $45 to $60, while six months of medication costs $60 to $120. You can get pet insurance to help cover the cost of these vet expenses.

On average, birthing and raising a litter of puppies can cost $15,800. Most breeders work through deals, wholesales, and many times, use the same bedding and toys for new litters. This can reduce the costs to about $7,700 to breed a litter of healthy puppies.

If the breeder is aiming for really high-quality litters for shows, the cost can climb a lot higher. Breeders who have show-quality puppies can spend around $24,000 on the whole.

What Nutrients Does A Golden Retriever Puppy Need

It is a little-known fact that different dog breeds would have different requirements when it comes to their nutrition. This is true because no dog breed is the same, as dogs have different builds, features, and genetics that would require a different diet.

Golden retrievers are no different, as they are playful, energetic, and intelligent. Their beautiful coats make them stand out amongst dogs. Their nutritional requirements are as follows:

What If The Adoption Doesnt Work Out

If there is a problem with the adoption, please contact the Adoption Coordinator and discuss the issue. Many times there are growing pains when integrating a new dog into the home. Check out this link for some useful tips for the first 30 days after bringing a new dog home. Also, dont be afraid to reach out to the foster family or Foster Coordinator as they can be great resources to help ensure the adoption is successful. Many great friendships have started between foster families and adopters.

If it is determined that the dog wasnt a good fit, the Adoption Coordinator will facilitate the transfer of the dog back to GRRNT. Under no circumstances should you give the dog to someone else, release the dog to another rescue, or release the dog to a shelter. Even after adoption, GRRNT retains a life-long interest in the dog, and resumes ownership if the adopter violates the Terms and Conditions of Adoption or is unable to keep the dog for any reason.

Please also know that returning a dog doesnt mean you will lose your chance to adopt from GRRNT. Sometimes what seems like a perfect fit just doesnt work out. In those situations, GRRNT may work with you to identify a new dog that would be a better fit in your home. Contact the Adoption Coordinator to discuss your options.

What If My Golden Retriever Puppy Wont Eat

There are many things that could cause a puppy to lose interest in their food, such as infections, pain, organ problems, or the way youre feeding them. Here are a few of the most common reasons why puppies stop eating as much as they should:

    • Stress: Your dog could be in a chaotic home, or perhaps he is being bullied by other pets in your home like the cat. Children can abuse pets as well.
    • Digestive upset or obstruction: They may eat food that they shouldnt.
    • Digestive infections: There are many viruses such as Parvo, intestinal worms, bacteria, etc.

When purchasing a dog like a Golden Retriever, it is also a good idea to consider the costs involved with supplying a large breed dog. Caring for a dog properly involves much more than just food and water.

    Consider some common yearly costs:

    • Taking your dog for their annual vet visit can cost $100 to $300 depending on where you go and the services they need. Your dogs vet bills will cost about $1,000 to $3,600.
    • You can expect to spend about $250 to $750 on food per year. In your dogs life, that can add up to $2,500 to $9,000.
    • A license can be free or up to $20, depending on your city. Licensing your dog will cost nothing, or it might cost $240 for their entire life.
    • You can pay anywhere from $0 to $100 each year on toys and maybe more when your dog is a puppy. Dog toys can run you up to $1,200 or more overall.

The annual cost of owning a Golden Retriever comes to about $350 to $1,070. And with the average lifespan being 10 to 12 years, you may have to spend $3,500 to $12,840. But keep in mind that those numbers dont include paying for emergency surgeries, dog sitters, and other less frequent costs.
