Woman Sues After Lost Dog Found Adopted Out To New Family
CHICAGO – A Chicago woman is heartbroken after her lost golden retriever was adopted by another family. Now, shes taking legal action in hopes of getting her dog back.
Karly Moran-West, 20, says she knew her golden retriever, Zeus, was a perfect match for her the moment she first saw him as a puppy.
Zeus was very outgoing. He came straight up to me. He was playing with us, and I was like, That is the one I want. He acts exactly like me, she said.
For six years, Moran-West cared for Zeus until he escaped from the backyard of her fathers home in January 2020. The dog had his name and his owners cellphone number embroidered on his red collar, just in case.
But in a lawsuit, Moran-West alleges the Chicago Department of Animal Care and Control didnt call her when its workers found Zeus shortly after he went missing. He was instead turned over to Fetching Tails, an animal rescue agency.
Im still blown away by the fact that theres a dog with a collar, with a phone number, and nobody saw fit to call, said Jonathan Rosen, Moran-Wests lawyer.
Zeus was adopted by another family. That family has since said they wont return him to Moran-West.
Moran-Wests lawsuit argues the city and Fetching Tails violated Illinois law, which requires animal care agencies to make every effort to find owners of lost dogs.
Moran-West is heartbroken over the incident. She says when she found out that Zeus had been adopted by another family, she cried for two weeks.

At Red Prairie Retrievers we raise and train Golden Retrievers in Gillette, Wyoming. We were blessed with our first golden in 2009 and have a lifetime of experience working with dogs. We are active members of Boomtown HRC, Casper WY and participate in HRC and AKC field events. It is our belief that the more we do with our dogs, the better their lives are, so we also train our dogs towards earning their CGC+, TKN+, VHMA and participate in other fun sport titles like Dock Diving and Air Retrieve! We are also very blessed to get to work with a handful of trainers, including service and field to produce working service dogs that are donated to handlers in need. Our goldens make fantastic pets as well as working partners! We currently have dogs excelling at SAR, service work, agility, hunting, hunt test, dog diving, and therapy work.
We have been blessed to be able to better our breeding/program, as we have grown and become active in education, research, and more involved in sport work and service work. These opportunities have allowed us to connect with other breeders and trainers along the way!
