Make A Scavenger Hunt For Your Dog
Hide some of your dog’s favorite treats around the home and help them search them out. Kids really like getting involved with this game and picking the hiding spots. You can do this outdoors in a securely fenced yard as well, just make sure you watch out for toxic mushrooms and remove them before setting up your dog’s scavenger hunt.
I suggest using some stinky high-value treats for a scavenger hunt, as often dogs won’t work hard to find their regular dry food. Help them find each item and give lots of praise when they do!

When it comes to teaching your puppy to not chew on household items, heres what doesnt really work:
- Yelling at them
- Spraying bad-tasting liquid on items
- Punishing them
Heres what does work: getting them to want to chew on other things and teaching them not to chew on things besides chew toys.
If you see your puppy chewing on your shoe, interrupt them with a clap or a Nope! and then give them an enticing chew toy to chew on .
Once they start chewing on the chew toy, instead of the shoe, praise them and let them know theyre doing a good job.
Pretty soon when they have the urge to chew theyll be looking for a chew toy that they know is ok to chew and they like chewing it.
For crate training, durable chew toys are great for keeping them occupied in the crate.
If theyre in the crate stressing about being alone, youre going to have a tough time getting them comfortable in there.
But if theyre in the crate going to town on a chew toy and loving life, theyll soon realize the crate is not so bad.

What To Look For In A Good Toy For Golden Retrievers
The good news is that its not difficult to find a toy your golden retriever will love. These dogs are playful and curious by nature, and they enjoy discovering new toys and games.
Golden retrievers possess incredible control over their bite. They can carry fragile objects in their mouth. However, some dogs tend to get rough with their toys.
Observe how your golden likes to play. Are they careful with their toys? Do they have a comfort item they always pick up gently? Some dogs are gentle with their toys, while others prefer to engage in destructive behaviors like biting, chewing, shaking, and throwing toys. If your dog is rough with their toys, look for durable items.
Pay attention to the size of the toys you pick. Look for small toys for a puppy, and introduce new toys as your pooch grows. A small toy can become a choking hazard if its not adapted to your dogs size.
Golden retrievers are an active breed. Toys are a great way of promoting activity and will help your dog get the exercise they need. Look for toys you can use to play fetch, like balls and Frisbees.
Tea Towel Snuffle Mat
Snuffle mats are pieces of fabric with lots of loops, flaps, or pockets that can be used to hide treats. The point is for your dog to sniff for treats hidden in the fabric. If youre handy with a sewing machine, you can make your own snuffle mat out of sturdy fabric. Simply stitch pockets and flaps all over the material to allow you to hide bits of food.
A simpler, sewing-free alternative is to buy a plastic mat. Look for one with a grid of holes already in it, like a rubber sink mat, or poke holes in the mat yourself. Then tear fleece into strips that are six to eight inches long. Tie a fleece strip through each hole in the mat until the top of the mat looks like a fleece forest. Once youve filled all the holes, toss a handful of treats on the top of the mat then watch your dog snuffle through the fleece to retrieve them.
An even easier version of the snuffle mat can be made from a tea towel. Lay a towel flat on the floor and place some treats in the center. Then fold the towel longways across the treats. Next, tie the towel in a loose knot so the treats are in the middle. Your dog will have to figure out how to untie the tea towel to get at the treats inside. Easy for you to make, but not easy for your dog to undo! To add to the challenge, tie several tea towels together in a row with treats in each one.

Chew Toys As A Training Aid
Two of my favorite techniques to train using chew toys are:
Heres what doesnt work when it comes to educating your puppy not to chew on household items:

Youll have a hard time getting them comfortable in the crate if theyre stressed up about being alone.
However, if theyre in the crate chewing on a chew toy and enjoying life, theyll quickly realize the crate isnt that horrible.
Toys For Your Golden Retriever
Finding toys for Golden Retrievers is not hard for me, being an owner I have to admit that the tennis ball seems to be the toy of choice. I have tried the Frisbee, Tug toys etc., but basically I let him make the choice, that is ones that he enjoys playing with the most. He will let you know, so dont go thinking just because you like it that he is going to.

Training Your Golden Retriever To Fetch And Drop For Frustration Free Playtime
Toys are an excellent way to train your Golden Retriever how to fetch and drop. It makes playtime less frustrating for you and them. Remember, Goldens love to please their human companions and respond well to praise.
Golden Retriever puppies start chasing balls at a young age, even if theyre clumsy about it and too small to grab the ball. Start by slowly rolling a ball back and forth between your hands. Theres a good chance your pup joins in the fun.
Gradually extend the distance between you and save your praise for when they pick the ball up. Naturally, your pup wants to know why youre excited, so theyll return to you. Take the ball and immediately roll it back, so your dog knows theyll get it back.
Once your pup has this process down, start incorporating the drop it part. You may have to demonstrate several times by using the words and prying the ball out. Praise your pup when the ball is out of their mouth.
