How Can I Tell If A Toy Is Safe For My Dog To Use

When considering whether or not you want to purchase a toy, you should check what the manufacturer has used to make it, as some ingredients arent safe for dogs to chew. Also, consider the toughness of materials and how durable the toy will be in comparison to your dogs regular activities. When in doubt, consult your vet for advice.

Zukes Mini Training Treats Magnum Golden Retrievers 1000 Piece Jigsaw ...

Some of our favorite training treats for dogs like the Mini Golden Retriever are natural training treats that are low in calories and highly palatable. This is what we like about Zukes Mini Training Treats listed above.

These dog treats are specifically designed for training and will help keep your MIni Golden Retreivers attention, especially if you only pull them out during training sessions.

Remember, try to refrain from scolding or punishing your Mini Golden Retriever during training sessions, as this could lead to a breakdown in the bond between you two. It could also cause him to shut down, which will hinder his learning process.

Petstages Dogwood Stick Dog Chew Toy

Best Water/Floating Dog Toy

If you spend a lot of time near water, a toy that floats is important for you and your Golden. Petstages created an innovative toy that uses real wood and synthetic materials for a safe, durable, stick.

Thats right, when they say stick, they mean it. This dog toy looks very much like a stick youd find in the backyard, and it behaves like one as well. However, this stick is much safer than any youd find outdoors.

With thousands of reviews, many pups and their owners appreciate Petstages stick for its durability and function. If your Golden loves chewing sticks, this may be a safer alternative for you.

What Makes Interactive Toys Great For Dogs

The amount of dog toys available is massive, and while some of the common and more basic toys are great to have around the house, these can become boring very quickly for your dog.

Interactive toys are different because they offer something exciting and unusual for your dog to play with, and this means theyll stay entertained for longer! There are a few different options when it comes to the interactive toys available:

  • Noisy toys that will produce various sounds when your dog moves or bites on the toy.
  • Movement toys that will move on their own, or take unusual directions when pushed around by your dog. Your dog can create their own dog games this way!
  • Content toys that dispense objects when your dog moves the toy around or solves the puzzle. Double action for more fun!

Remember that you should make sure that your dog is supervised when playing with any toys for the first time or toys that can break.

Zippypaws Plush Dog Toy

  • Perfect for medium to large breed dogs.
  • Hide-and-seek puzzle toy.
  • Keeps dogs entertained for hours.
  • Great for inquisitive Golden Retrievers.

This interactive toy will pique your pups interest. Simply squeak the chipmunks to get their attention and then stuff them into the log to hide them. Another squeeze and Fido will be chomping at the bit to bury his nose into the log to find them. It can take a while to find them, which will make your pup want to find them over and over again.

Plus, this toy can double up as an indoor fetch toy, or a treat can be hidden with the chipmunks for extra rewards. You can purchase the squeaky chipmunks on their own if they need replacing due to excessive chewing. Or when it is past its best, and the squeakers stop working.

We love the versatility of how it can be played with, and its another machine washable that makes our lives much easier.

Kong Jumbler Football Dog Toy

The KONG Jumbler Football puts a new spin on a classic game of fetch. The tennis ball inside the football jumbles around and gives off a loud squeak. The exterior football has enough give to it that will allow your Golden Retriever to easily grab it and shake it.

With two handles on each end, this football is easy to throw and easy for your dog to fetch. The lightweight design of this toy makes it great for water play too! It floats and thanks to its bright colour it can easily be spotted in the water or on land from a distance.

KONG is known for making toys that are durable and built to last, and the Jumbler Football toy will last through numerous play sessions.

  • A fun and versatile toy that jumbles, bounces and squeaks.

Make A Scavenger Hunt For Your Dog

Hide some of your dog’s favorite treats around the home and help them search them out. Kids really like getting involved with this game and picking the hiding spots. You can do this outdoors in a securely fenced yard as well, just make sure you watch out for toxic mushrooms and remove them before setting up your dog’s scavenger hunt.

I suggest using some stinky high-value treats for a scavenger hunt, as often dogs won’t work hard to find their regular dry food. Help them find each item and give lots of praise when they do!

Frisco Plush With Rope Squeaking Monkey Dog Toy

This soft plush toy is perfect if your dog is gentle with their toys, or if they enjoy comfort items. This toy comes with built-in ropes so you can use it as a tug toy or even throw it to play fetch.

Your dog will like chewing on the ropes when they feel anxious, and the plush toy has a built-in squeaker that makes the plush part fun to chew on. The noise of the squeaker will be exciting for your golden retriever and encourage them to interact with the toy.

The toy has a soft feel, but it doesnt have a lot of stuffing in it. If your dog destroys it, the small quantity of stuffing makes the toy less messy and dangerous.

Using Chew Toys For Training

Ravensburger: Jigsaw Puzzle

Two of my favorite ways to use chew toys for training are:

  • To train puppies to not chew on household items
  • To help with crate training
  • When it comes to teaching your puppy to not chew on household items, heres what doesnt really work:

    • Yelling at them
    • Spraying bad-tasting liquid on items
    • Punishing them

Heres what does work: getting them to want to chew on other things and teaching them not to chew on things besides chew toys.

If you see your puppy chewing on your shoe, interrupt them with a clap or a Nope! and then give them an enticing chew toy to chew on .

Once they start chewing on the chew toy, instead of the shoe, praise them and let them know theyre doing a good job.

Pretty soon when they have the urge to chew theyll be looking for a chew toy that they know is ok to chew and they like chewing it.

For crate training, durable chew toys are great for keeping them occupied in the crate.

If theyre in the crate stressing about being alone, youre going to have a tough time getting them comfortable in there.

But if theyre in the crate going to town on a chew toy and loving life, theyll soon realize the crate is not so bad.

What To Look For In A Good Toy For Golden Retrievers

The good news is that its not difficult to find a toy your golden retriever will love. These dogs are playful and curious by nature, and they enjoy discovering new toys and games.

Golden retrievers possess incredible control over their bite. They can carry fragile objects in their mouth. However, some dogs tend to get rough with their toys.

Observe how your golden likes to play. Are they careful with their toys? Do they have a comfort item they always pick up gently? Some dogs are gentle with their toys, while others prefer to engage in destructive behaviors like biting, chewing, shaking, and throwing toys. If your dog is rough with their toys, look for durable items.

Pay attention to the size of the toys you pick. Look for small toys for a puppy, and introduce new toys as your pooch grows. A small toy can become a choking hazard if its not adapted to your dogs size.

Golden retrievers are an active breed. Toys are a great way of promoting activity and will help your dog get the exercise they need. Look for toys you can use to play fetch, like balls and Frisbees.

    Tea Towel Snuffle Mat

Snuffle mats are pieces of fabric with lots of loops, flaps, or pockets that can be used to hide treats. The point is for your dog to sniff for treats hidden in the fabric. If youre handy with a sewing machine, you can make your own snuffle mat out of sturdy fabric. Simply stitch pockets and flaps all over the material to allow you to hide bits of food.

A simpler, sewing-free alternative is to buy a plastic mat. Look for one with a grid of holes already in it, like a rubber sink mat, or poke holes in the mat yourself. Then tear fleece into strips that are six to eight inches long. Tie a fleece strip through each hole in the mat until the top of the mat looks like a fleece forest. Once youve filled all the holes, toss a handful of treats on the top of the mat then watch your dog snuffle through the fleece to retrieve them.

An even easier version of the snuffle mat can be made from a tea towel. Lay a towel flat on the floor and place some treats in the center. Then fold the towel longways across the treats. Next, tie the towel in a loose knot so the treats are in the middle. Your dog will have to figure out how to untie the tea towel to get at the treats inside. Easy for you to make, but not easy for your dog to undo! To add to the challenge, tie several tea towels together in a row with treats in each one.

Chew Toys As A Training Aid

Two of my favorite techniques to train using chew toys are:

  • To teach pups not to chew on things around the house 2. To assist in crate training
  • Heres what doesnt work when it comes to educating your puppy not to chew on household items:

    • Angry at them
    • Spraying goods with a foul-tasting liquid
    • They are being punished.

What works is to get them to chew on other things and to teach them not to chew on things other than chew toys.

If your puppy starts chewing on your shoe, stop them with a clap or a Nope! and give them a tasty chew toy to chew on .

Praise them and tell them theyre doing a wonderful job after they start chewing on the chew toy instead of the shoe.

When they have the urge to chew, theyll quickly hunt for a chew toy that they know is safe to chew and that they enjoy chewing.

Durable chew toys are ideal for keeping dogs active in their crates during crate training.

Youll have a hard time getting them comfortable in the crate if theyre stressed up about being alone.

However, if theyre in the crate chewing on a chew toy and enjoying life, theyll quickly realize the crate isnt that horrible.

Golden Retriever Tries Nina Ottosson Dog Puzzle Toy // Brain Game For Mental Enrichment & Boredom

Finding toys for Golden Retrievers is not hard for me, being an owner I have to admit that the tennis ball seems to be the toy of choice. I have tried the Frisbee, Tug toys etc., but basically I let him make the choice, that is ones that he enjoys playing with the most. He will let you know, so dont go thinking just because you like it that he is going to.

Training Your Golden Retriever To Fetch And Drop For Frustration Free Playtime

Toys are an excellent way to train your Golden Retriever how to fetch and drop. It makes playtime less frustrating for you and them. Remember, Goldens love to please their human companions and respond well to praise.

Golden Retriever puppies start chasing balls at a young age, even if theyre clumsy about it and too small to grab the ball. Start by slowly rolling a ball back and forth between your hands. Theres a good chance your pup joins in the fun.

Gradually extend the distance between you and save your praise for when they pick the ball up. Naturally, your pup wants to know why youre excited, so theyll return to you. Take the ball and immediately roll it back, so your dog knows theyll get it back.

Once your pup has this process down, start incorporating the drop it part. You may have to demonstrate several times by using the words and prying the ball out. Praise your pup when the ball is out of their mouth.
