What Can I Do At Home To Remove Or Prevent Matted Fur

Regular brushing of your dogs fur is the greatest way to prevent matted fur from occurring. Unfortunately, there is a lot of advice on the internet that might work, but it will be really painful for your dog and not nearly as effective as what I am going to share with you.

I have found the combination of three different brushes to prevent, remove and eliminate matted fur on my Goldendoodle, and I think it will work for you too.

Keep Your Dog’s Fur Trimmed Short

Another option to prevent matting is to keep your dog’s coat trimmed nice and short, which also makes brushing easier. If you go this route, you will need to take them to the groomer more often.

A shorter haircut is only recommended for dogs with single-layer coats double-coated breeds or breed mixes should NOT be shaved unless recommended by your veterinarian for medical reasons. Many dog owners think their double-coated breed will be cooler in the heat if they shave their coat, but shaving their outer coat down actually has the opposite effect! Shaving a dog’s coat exposes their skin and puts them at increased risk of sunburn and skin cancer. Their outer coat is important for both temperature regulation and sun protection. Instead of shaving, a good brushing to get rid of any loose undercoat fur is the best way to help your double-coated dog stay cool.

Pro Tip: Do NOT shave a dog with a double-coat unless you have been directed to do so by your veterinarian.

Should You Shave Your Golden Retriever

Shaving your Golden Retriever is not recommended. The double coat of a Golden Retriever protects their skin from sun, heat, cold, and moisture. Their fur acts as an insulator against both the heat and cold.

Golden Retrievers Have Double Coats

Golden Retrievers do have a double coat. A double coat is a type of fur consisting of two layers. A thick undercoat of short hairs that keep the dog warm and an outer jacket with longer hairs usually referred to as the guard coat. Both the undercoat and guard coat grow to different lengths and independently from one another.

Golden retrievers, unlike other breeds, do not shed their puppy fur. Instead, the puppy fur is pushed aside by the extensive mature hair growing in and ultimately becomes the undercoat. The undercoat tends to be shorter and grows faster than the guard coat. The golden retrievers double layer takes anywhere from three to six months to develop fully.

The thickness of your dogs double coat depends on its environment. Dogs that spend all their time indoors will have a thinner fur than those that spend most of their time outside. Double coated dogs like the Golden Retriever shed their undercoats twice a year, in the spring and during fall.

We recommend brushing it regularly with a good bristle brush. Brushing your golden retriever on a regular will not only make the dogs coat beautiful and healthy, but will also reduce the amount of hair the dog sheds throughout the house.

The double coat helps keep your golden retriever cool in hot weather and warm in cold weather. The fur also helps the dog swim and protect them from debris and dirt.

Dematting With A Dematting Comb

Dematting tools are most useful on double-coated dogs like the Border Collie or Australian Shepherd. Trying to remove a mat by brushing it with a normal brush will cause pain for the dog: ensure you have a proper dematting tool.

1. Inspect the dogâs coat for any sores, open wounds or skin issues. If you find any of these, you may want to see a professional, or simply avoid the affected area.

2. Start from the neck and work your way down the body, gently stroking the dematting tool through the coat in the direction of the hair growth.

3. Work from the root of the hairs to the tip to ensure you donât brush over underlying mats.

4. Use short, gentle strokes and light pressure to remove all knots and tangles. Do not rush the process.

5. Remove the clumps of hair from the tool and discard them as you go.

Other Helpful Tips For Removing A Mat From Your Dogs Coat
