Trained Golden Retriever Puppies

Golden Retriever Puppy First Week Home – Professional Dog Training Tips

We begin training puppies at 4 weeks old. The initial training is to respond to a whistle, a hand clap or a snap. We do this by giving the puppies these cues before we feed. At 6 weeks of age we begin working with our pups on an individual basis. WE teach them to walk on a leash and begin their obedience training with site, stay and down.

We also begin crate training at this time by feeding the pups in individual crates. We strongly believe that crate training is the easiest & most natural way to house train a puppy. Dogs still retain a den instinct. It is the reason a puppy will crawl under a table, couch or chair, its dark, snug & safe in there. The crate is always a positive aspect in a puppys life. If they are being disciplined they need to put outside, NOT in the crate. The crate is a safe haven, where they eat, sleep & feel safe warm & cozy.

Beyond this age, they are working on increasing the time spent in training, polishing up behaviors & learning about the outside world. We take our puppies out on field trips. We will take them to safe places, where they can interact with different people & animals, all the while they are expected to maintain their good behaviors.

Our goal in training is to create a good canine citizen, one that can become an excellent addition to your home, your family & your life for many years to come.

Levels of Training

Differences in the training levels:

Mistakes When Teaching Your Puppy To Come

Here are some of the common mistakes people make when teaching the recall command to their puppy.

Challenging them too much, too early

You want your puppy to always come to you when you ask, and every time they disobey you, they start to learn that they dont always have to come when you call.

To stop that from happening, make sure theyre on a leash until they come to you 100% of the time you ask, and dont ask them to come in situations that are too distracting for them, like at a park, or if a distracting dog or human is around.

Another thing to consider here is that young puppies will love coming to you because theyre like little kids that just want to be close to their mom and dad.

However, when they become teenage puppies many show signs of becoming independent rebels and may find it more fun to run away from you than to run to you.

During these times, dont expect too much and continue to practice the basics and set them up for success.

Punishing them for not coming

If your puppy doesnt come, you dont yell at them, or yank on the leash to get them to come.

Instead, you need to figure out a way to make them want to come to you.

Maybe thats going to a less-distracting environment and practicing more there, or getting a more delicious treat to lure them to you, or squeaking a toy they really love.

Punishing them after they come to you

The name of the game here is getting your dog to love coming to you.

Golden Retriever Personality Traits

While Golden Retrievers dont have a high prey-drive because theyre hypersensitive to sensory input and stimulation as a whole, they can often be extremely excitable. Owners rave that their Goldens remain a puppy well into adulthood because that enthusiasm never wanes, and sometimes its one of their most coveted characteristics.

Other times not so much, as this excitably can become problematic when it seemingly has no end. The first time this is usually encountered is when training a puppy to comfortably walk on a leash. It usually takes a bit longer than usual to leash-train a Golden Retriever.

Lastly, when it comes to dogs as popular as the Golden Retriever, its incredibly important to thoroughly research the breeder youre purchasing your puppy from. The more demand for a breed, the larger the chance irresponsible breeders and puppy mills stress more importance on quantity than quality. If your dog is a product of irresponsible breeding, no amount of training is going to change their propensity to demonstrate poor characteristics.

With that being said, these are simply things to be aware of in the training process, and not points to dissuade you from purchasing a Golden Retriever. Theres a reason theyre Americas #3 dog, and thats because by in large theyre fantastic companions, lovable home bodies, and have astounding temperaments.

Visiting The Bathroom Spot At Night

Trained Golden Retriever Puppies

Visiting the bathroom spot at night should be relatively no-nonsense. Carry them if theyre little. Lead them gently with the leash if theyre old enough. Head straight to their designated spot, say your chosen cue word, and praise them gently when they finish their business.

Do not reward your puppy with food or play. The last thing you want to do is teach your puppy that play time happens every night at 2 AM. Potty time, and then back to bed. Your pup must know that nighttime is for sleeping.

Of course no two pups are the same, and some puppies may sleep through the night at 10 or 15 weeks, but this is rare. In general, your puppy should last seven hours by the time they are 16 weeks old.

Congratulations! The hard part is over.

Teaching Your Dog To Obey In Every Situation

I remember teaching Oliver to sit pretty quickly.

Im not going to lie, I was a little proud of how fast he learned, but when we took him to my parents house and I tried to show him off, he would not sit no matter how hard I tried to get him to.

Then when we returned home that night, he was sitting perfectly every time!

Dogs dont generalize well, meaning that even though Oliver knew sit means sit in my living room, he didnt know that sit means sit in my parents living room as well.

Eventually, he learned that sit means sit no matter where we are, but then we faced another problem: whenever other dogs were around he wouldnt pay attention to me and sit when I asked him to.

So heres how to get your puppy to obey you in every situation, even with distractions: practice.

Practice in different rooms in your house, in the backyard, in the driveway, on your walks, at the park.

Also, practice with different distractions around, like around other dogs or people.

And heres a note for when you practice: take baby steps.

You want your dog to obey you every time you ask them to, so slowly teach them new behaviors in new environments, and slowly add in new distractions.

For example, if you just taught your puppy how to sit in the living room, teach them to sit in the kitchen next, not at your local park.

And if your dog is great with obeying while there are no other dogs around, take him to a park, stay 100 feet away from other dogs, then try to get him to obey.

When Should You Start Training Your Golden Retriever Puppy

Puppies are surprisingly smart and you can start training them as soon as you bring them home.

In fact, its encouraged to start training them as soon as you bring them home.

For one, it will help build communication and a bond between you two.

It will also help build their confidence as theyre challenged and they overcome those challenges.

Plus, its great to start training them before bad habits start.

If your puppy learns that jumping up on people gets him pets and attention, its going to be very hard to train her not to do it.

And if your puppy learns that crying in the crate gets them out of it, its going to be very hard to teach him not to do that.

So now that you know puppies are easy to train, and you know you need to start training them asap, how do you actually train them?

Lets get into the training strategies now.

Vigilant Supervision: Behavioral Correction

A new golden retriever pet parent must be prepared to be ever vigilant in watching their new pup like a hawk! If your puppy accidentally pees inside or chews on a household item, you cant yell or punish your pup if you werent supervising them properly. Thats like punishing at a 2-year-old who just burned their hand on the stove-top flames. Yes, inform them that fire is unsafe, and they should never touch the stove when you are not around.

You are the parent, and you are always responsible for their safety and well-beingso that moment is 100% on you. Puppies, in so many ways, are like human children. You would not harm your human child. Therefore, you should not harm your canine child!

Biting & Chewing

Dogs use their teeth for a lot of things. It is a natural canine behavior. However, you dont want your dog biting your neighbors kid or tearing your new comforter to shreds. You need to direct their biting properly, so they know when it is okay, and when it is not okay to chew on something.

To curb their desire to nibble on your favorite shoes, provide your puppy with lots and lots of chew toys. If they start chewing on a household item, redirect them to a chew toy.

Puppies are also capable of adjusting their bite pressure. If your golden retriever puppy has not yet learned what hurts you and what does not, you will need to yelp like an injured dog to let them know. Yes. Yelp.

An Active Puppy Will Pee More Often

Golden Retriever

Some owners get frustrated by their pups seeming ability to hold their pee at night when theyre asleep for 8 hours or more, when they pee every 30 minutes when theyre awake!

This is natural, though. A sleeping puppys metabolism slows right down, so they dont produce as much urine as they do when theyre awake.

Dont forget, playing with your puppy is thirsty work for everyone! So your little one will also be drinking more when awake.

Difficulty Walking On Leash

Some Goldens either never really got the hang of leash training, werent ever trained, or have regressed due to poor reinforcement. Either way, its important to correct this behavior as soon as possible. While on a walk, if your pup goes wild, stop.

Wait until your pup calms down. Once they do, continue the walk. You will literally repeat this repeatedly. Granted, youll need ample amounts of time to make this successful. Try walking three times a day this way for a few weeks to see if the behavior improves.

How To Know When House Training Is Finished

When your puppy has learned to never ever soil in the home, youll know all your hard work has paid off. Most dogs will be between 6 and 8 months old, but it really depends on the dog, your methods, and your level of commitment.

Do not judge your dog by a clock or a calendar. When they have proven themselves trustworthy, you will be free to trust them, but remember, a single mistake in the home can cause a huge setback in house training.

A good level to aim for will be your puppy hasnt even tried to make a mistake for at least 4 weeks. If they do this, you can be fairly sure theyve learnt the correct habits. Why 4 weeks?

A puppy may not make a mistake for a week, maybe two, you then decide they can be trusted, stop watching them and before you know it they make a mistake on your carpet. Then they could be regularly trying to toilet inside your home again.

Some puppies may seem to forget everything theyve learned for a day or two. This is normal their brains are maturing at an incredible rate. Just remember they arent being naughty and continue with your house training plan and dont be discouraged. Your puppy will learn the rules given time.
