MIAMI — The Labrador Retriever is the most popular dog breed in the U.S. once again, according to the American Kennel Club. Labs top the list for the 31st year in a row.
The breed beat out 196 other recognized breeds to take home the honor.
The AKC says Labs’ temperament and versatility are two traits that keep them favorites among American families.
Poodles reentered the top five for the first time since 1997, landing in fifth place.
The club’s annual popularity rankings came out Tuesday, drawn from more than 800,000 purebred puppies and older pooches that joined the nation’s oldest canine registry last year.
There are 197 recognized breeds.

Children And Other Pets
The amiable Golden Retriever isn’t bothered by the noise and commotion of kids in fact, he thrives on it. He’s a large, strong dog, though, and he can easily knock over a small child by mistake.
As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. Teach your child never to approach any dog while he’s eating or sleeping or to try to take the dog’s food away. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child.
The Golden’s attitude toward other pets is the more the merrier. He enjoys the companionship of other dogs, and with proper introductions and training, can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals.

It’s no surprise that the Golden Retriever is one of the top ten most popular dogs in the U.S. It’s all good with the Golden: he’s highly intelligent, sociable, beautiful, and loyal.
He’s also lively. The Golden is slow to mature and retains the silly, playful personality of a puppy until three to four years of age, which can be both delightful and annoying. Many keep their puppyish traits into old age.
Originally bred for the physically demanding job of retrieving ducks and other fowl for hunters, the Golden needs daily exercise: a walk or jog, free time in the yard, a run at the beach or lake , or a game of fetch. And like other intelligent breeds who were bred to work, they need to have a job to do, such as retrieving the paper, waking up family members, or competing in dog sports. A tired Golden is a well-behaved Golden.
As well as giving your Golden Retriever physical and mental exercise, you should also be prepared to include him in your family activities. The Golden Retriever is a family dog, and he needs to be with his “pack.” Don’t consider getting a Golden unless you’re willing to have him in the house with you, underfoot, every day.
There’s one other potential drawback to the breed: He’s definitely not a watchdog. He might bark when strangers come around, but don’t count on it. Most likely, he’ll wag his tail and flash that characteristic Golden smile.

Coat Color And Grooming
Golden Retrievers have a dense, water-repellent outer coat with a thick undercoat. Some coats are wavy, some are straight. The fur feathers on the back of the front legs and underbody, with heavier feathering on the chest, back of the thighs, and tail.
Golden Retrievers come in all shades of gold, from light to dark gold. Some breeders have begun selling “rare white Goldens,” but the American Kennel Club does not recognize white as a coat color for the breed.
Golden Retrievers shed moderately in the winter and summer, and heavily in the spring and fall. If you live with a Golden, you’ll need to adapt to a certain amount of dog hair in your house and on your clothes.
The Golden’s thick coat means lots of grooming. Daily brushing is recommended to prevent tangling, and once a week is the bare minimum. Your Golden will also need a bath at least once a month, often more frequently, to keep him looking and smelling clean.
Brush your Golden’s teeth at least two or three times a week to remove tartar buildup and the bacteria that lurk inside it. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath.
Begin accustoming your Golden to being brushed and examined when he’s a puppy. Handle his paws frequently dogs are touchy about their feet and look inside his mouth. Make grooming a positive experience filled with praise and rewards, and you’ll lay the groundwork for easy veterinary exams and other handling when he’s an adult.

The American Kennel Club released its 2021 list of most popular dog breeds in the United States on Tuesday, using registration data to rank-order all 197 breeds it tracks. The Labrador Retriever topped the list, marking year 31 of the breed being No. 1.
“The Lab’s temperament and versatility are just two of the traits that contribute to its perennial popularity,” the AKC wrote in a press release.
For the first time since 1997, the Poodle moved back into the top five. The AKC stated that most breeds are about as popular as they were in 2020, with a few exceptions, like the Field Spaniel, which moved up 24 places to No. 136, and the Puli, which dropped 21 places to No. 164. The Biewer Terrier, recognized by the AKC in January 2021, debuted at No. 82.
The rest of the top five breeds in the U.S. included French Bulldogs, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds. Bulldogs, Beagles, Rottweilers, German Shorthaired Pointers and Dachshunds also made the top 10.
“The pandemic has been an especially popular time for new dog owners to decide to bring home a puppy,” the AKC wrote.
The list was drawn from more than 800,000 purebred puppies and older dogs that joined the nation’s oldest canine registry last year.

How popular is your pup? The American Kennel Club just announced the organizations annual list of dog breeds ranked by popularity. While many favorites remain near the top, there have been a few recent changes.
Labrador retrievers top the list for the 31st year in a row. French bulldogs maintained last years No. 2 spot, and golden retrievers jumped ahead of German shepherd dogs in third and fourth place, respectively.
Poodles edged out bulldogs for fifth place, making it the first time the breed has made the top five since 1997.
The organization took to Twitter to announce the top 10 breeds with gifs, such as this one presenting the two most popular of all.

The organization reports that there are currently more families with dogs than with children, and that the pandemic has prompted many first-time dog owners to bring puppies home. Because of this, the most popular breeds vary notably in size, temperament and appearance.
Here are the top 10 breeds for 2021:
First recognized by the AKC in 1917, labs didnt make the top 10 list until the 1970s. Finally, in 1991, they made No. 1, a record they have held for 31 years.
Though corgis sometimes seem to rule the internet, Pembroke Welsh corgis were just out of the top 10 on the AKCs list, at No. 11, followed by Australian shepherds and Yorkshire terriers .

Official Standard Of The Golden Retriever
The Board of Directors of the American Kennel Club has approved the following revised Standard for Golden Retrievers submitted by the Golden Retriever Club of America, Inc., to be effective September 1990:
General Appearance a symmetrical, powerful, active dog, sound and well put together, not clumsy nor long in the leg, displaying a kindly expression and possessing a personality that is eager, alert and self-confident. Primarily a hunting dog, he should be shown in hard working condition. Over-all appearance, balance, gait and purpose to be given more emphasis than any of his component parts.
Faults: Any departure from the described ideal shall be considered faulty to the degree to which it interferes with the breeds purpose or is contrary to breed character.
Size, Proportion, Substance Males 23-24 inches in height at withers females 21 1/2-22 1/2 inches. Dogs up to one inch above or below standard size should be proportionately penalized. Deviation in height of more than one inch from the standard shall disqualify.
Head broad in skull, slightly arched laterally and longitudinally without prominence of frontal bones or occipital bones. Stop well defined but not abrupt. Foreface deep and wide, nearly as long as skull. Muzzle straight in profile, blending smoothly and strongly into skull when viewed in profile or from above, slightly deeper and wider at stop than at tip. No heaviness in flews. Removal of whiskers is permitted but not preferred.

Maine Golden Retriever Club
On April 18, 2016, the Maine Golden Retriever Club was approved by the American Kennel Club to hold licensed specialty shows. In July 2011, MGRC wasincorporated to operate throughout the State of Maine as a domestic non-profit corporation and Golden Retriever Specialty Club.
The purposes of the Maine Golden Retriever Club are listed in its bylaws located on this site. Some of its purposes are to encourage and promote quality in thebreeding of purebred Golden Retrievers to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection to urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the AmericanKennel Club to conduct AKC sanctioned events within Maine and promote cooperation and good sportsmanship among its members in the ownership, training and exhibition of Golden Retrievers.
Prior to receiving its license to conduct specialty shows in April 2016, in August 2012, the American Kennel Club accepted the Maine Golden Retriever Club as aSpecialty Club at the Sanction B affiliation level. In September 2014, AKC approved MGRC to hold Plan A matches. MGRC is the only Golden Retriever club located in Maine which is affiliatedwith AKC. In March 2013, MGRC was welcomed as the newest provisional club of Golden Retriever Club of America . In April 2014, the GRCA granted Full Member status to MGRC. The clubis also a member of the Federation of Maine Dog Clubs.

The Blooming Popularity Of The Golden Retriever
The same, unfortunately, cant be said for Guisachan. The Golden Retrievers ancestral home changed hands many times over the ensuing decades, with much of its 20,000 acres eventually partitioned and sold off. The great house itself became an albatross, and in 1939, the roof was removed in order to lower the tax bill. A tangle of trees and underbrush began to grow where there were once drawing rooms and wine cellars.
In 2018, Friends of Guisachan , a non-profit group created to share information about the breeds birthplace, erected a life-size bronze state of a Golden Retriever in the Scottish village of Tomich, along the road to Guisachan. That same year, the group paid to clear the trees from the ruins, and began a campaign to stabilize what remains of the structure.
With its crumbling masonry and gaping window frames, Guisachan is a reminder that the monuments we humans build to the times in which we live often do not outlast us. Dogs, however, are somewhat more resilient. Like those wildflowers for which the first trio of Golden Retrievers were named, they can settle and thrive in unlikely places. And as their popularity blooms, they brighten their new landscapes, always carrying with them a whiff of the people and places that brought them into being.
