So You Want To Adopt A Puppy

We understand! We love Golden Retrievers. And we would like to help you make an informed decision as youconsider your options for bringing a new dog into your life. If you love dogs, it is important to be a conscious consumer. This involves doing your research on the pet industry to ensure you are not supporting a person or company who does not have the dogs well-being in mind. GRRR has created this guide to help make that easier for you.

Breeders Vs Pet Stores

While purchasing a puppy from a pet store may seem like the more accessible and cheaper option, that certainly doesnt mean its the right choice for you.

When you purchase a Golden Retriever puppy from a pet store, youre much less likely to receive the kind of assurances and services that a high quality breeder can provide.

The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. The Humane Society defines a puppy mill as: an inhumane high-volume dog breeding facility that churns out puppies for profit, ignoring the needs of the pups and their mothers.

In other words, when you buy a Golden Retriever from a pet store, youre likely to be purchasing a puppy that could have very well come from a puppy mill. As a result, you wont know anything about where your pup came from, and you wont receive any of the support youd receive if you go through a qualified breeder instead. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores.

When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems.

While pet stores usually provide some form of checkup and vaccination service, the veterinary care they provide is likely to be the no-frills kind, meaning theres a higher chance they could miss something that a more qualified examination would likely find.

Golden Retriever Puppies Breeders Info Faqs

Puppy Mill Rescue was founded on the philosophy that owners should make educated decisions when it comes to purchasing a puppy. With the help of our dog owners we are able to match puppies with the perfect family and at the same time help save and rescue puppies who are less fortunate.

Golden Retrievers are one of worlds most popular dog breeds for pets, since they have been bred to have traits favorable to companionship. In addition to being skilled at herding, hunting, and a number of other useful trades, many owners praise the Golden Retriever for its nurturing personality and safety around families and guests. Their looks, temperament, FINISH HERE

Golden Retrievers are often regarded as one of the best looking breeds available and have won top honors at the worlds most prestigious dog shows many times over the year. During the 1800s English breeders were concerned with looks just as much as with a dogs usefulness and temperament. Especially with long haired breeds like the Golden Retriever, breeders played close attention to the consistency and length of their dogs coats.

Golden Retrievers are one of the most friendly dogs to have around kids. Their loyal and servient attitude allows them to be playful around small children, but their instinctual concern for their owners makes them careful not to aggressively bump into smaller children.

Rescuing Puppy Mill Dog Is Worth The Challenges

About eight months ago, we lost our dog, a 17-year-old Pekingese. Over our 39 married years, we had eight dogs, and six of them were rescued.

Living on the Thunder Bay River, seven miles northwest of Alpena, we had a perfect spot to have our Su-Ming and the rescues, plus Gods collection of ducks, swans, geese, eagles, deer, beavers, bear, wild turkeys, otters and other types of wildlife.

But having no house pet was a huge void in our lives. So we decided to rescue or buy a dog. Because of COVD-19, dogs were in a large demand and hard to find. So we thought we would buy a Pekingese and were surprised at the price of $5,000 compared to the $600 we paid for Su-Ming.

It was off to the internet to find that dog. I spent about 80 hours of researching rescue dogs and the providers of these dogs. Along the way, I learned a simple rule.

I responded to three providers in Michigan and Ohio and two in Indiana, each with three picks from their available dogs on their webpage. There were eight to 12 pages of required questions about you, your veterinarians and your present or past dogs. Then you had to agree to their rules. We selected the golden retriever group from Waterview, Ohio, a wonderful group of volunteers that had an excellent record of service.

The sound of a train horn, the garbage truck, a fire engine, a jet or helicopter, a school bus with kids getting off, in snow the first time or even watching TV! Other dog noise does not affect them. But when a doorbell rings, OMG!

Only Purchase A Puppy From A Reputable Breeder

We encourage you to adopt, but if you have your heart set on a Golden Retriever puppy and are unable to find one at a rescue or shelter, it is essential that you purchase a puppy only through a reputable breeder.

  • Many dogs available at pet stores or online through both private websites and classified sites such as Craigslist originate from puppy mills.
  • Puppy mills are large commercial operations that put profit above the well-being of the dog. You can think of them as the equivalent of factory farms for dogs. They are often filthy, overcrowded, and are cruel or negligent in their treatment of dogs. Lack of adequate access to food, water, socialization, and veterinary care is typical. There are estimated to be 10,000 of these commercial breeders in the US alone.

Can You Open Your Heart and Home to a Puppy Mill Survivor?

You may have read at length about puppy mill breeder dogs or just learned now about this travesty of the dog world. Puppy mill breeder dogs are adult dogs of all breeds who have lived their entire lives being repeatedly bred by commercial breeders whose sole motivation is to turn an easy dollar. The resulting puppies are typically sold to pet stores or via disreputable Internet sites to an unsuspecting public while the adults remain in the puppy mill to reproduce again.

Guidelines For April Fund Grant Applications

The April Fund of the Golden Retriever Foundation is intended to help rescue groups defray veterinary expenses for an individual dog due to a single, extraordinary treatment or procedure. It is also used to assist groups with veterinary costs when they suffer a sudden influx of dogs from a puppy mill. It is designed to help rescue groups deal with abnormal situations, not as a subsidy for routine health care of rescued dogs.

  • The turn around time once the request is received is approximately one month.
  • The minimum amount granted per dog is $250. If the dog is from a puppy mill, this minimum is waived. The maximum award per dog per year is $400.
  • No requests will be considered for expenses incurred more than six months prior to the date the application is received by the Golden Retriever Foundation.
  • Applications are considered on a case-by-case basis.
  • There is a $5,000 cap on the amount which any one rescue group may receive annually from the April Fund. This cap may be waived in emergency situations.

The April Fund is supported by direct contributions, augmented by funds from rescue contributions to the GRF. The directors strive to make an equitable distribution of the available resources among rescue groups, but they may find it necessary at times to deny otherwise qualified applications because of a lack of immediate funds.

The Chiayi County Government holds an adoption lottery for 14 golden retrievers it rescued. The Chiayi County Government holds an adoption lottery for 14 golden retrievers it rescued.

TAIPEI After rescuing 14 golden retrievers from an illegal puppy mill, the Chiayi County Livestock Disease Control Center held a lottery on Thursday to find them new owners from a pool of 1,380 applicants.

According to the Chiayi County Government, after the LDCC received a report about unauthorized sales and breeding of dogs late last year, its staff and the police discovered an illegal golden retriever puppy mill. Though the owner, surnamed Chen , denied he was engaging in such activities, he was unable to tell the LDCC where he got the dogs, which were not registered or vaccinated.

The LDCC also found items such as oxytocin, fertilization tubes, microscope slides, and antibiotics on Chens property. It seized the dogs and fined Chen NT$233,000 for violating the Animal Protection Act, a record high for Chiayi County.

Chiayi County LDCC staff members say the dogs are very friendly.

After news of the incident went public, the LDCC received so many calls from people all over the country looking to adopt the dogs that it decided to set up an online application to vet potential adopters.

On Thursday, the golden retrievers were brought to the LDCCs lottery event, where Chiayi County Magistrate Weng Chang-liang personally drew the numbers.

To Apply For An April Fund Grant

Grants are made only to recognized rescue organizations for dogs under their care, not to individual owners or foster homes. Any of the following items on file with the GRF or with GRCA’s National Rescue Committee will satisfy the Foundationâs accountability requirements:

  • A copy of the rescue group’s current IRS 990 form
  • A current, completed GRF Rescue Group Grant Application
  • Participation in the most current NRC rescue group survey

Note: To maintain the integrity of the program, the GRF will expect rescue programs seeking GRF support to have participated in the GRCA National Rescue Committee’s Annual Survey, to submit a copy of that survey with their grant request, or to authorize the GRF to obtain a copy of the submitted survey from the NRC. For new organizations not functioning during the previous survey year, GRF expects these organizations to be known to the NRC and to be listed on the State Listings of Rescue Programs . This will be verified with the NRC.

Please remember that the purpose of the April Fund is to offset exceptional medical expenses, not to pay the ordinary vet costs that are incurred with each rescue. Groups are asked to monitor their own requests with this in mind. If you have questions concerning your application, contact the Foundation directly by e-mailing, writing or calling any of the directors.

Missy & Buddy: Female 2 & Male 3 Years Old

Rescued Golden Retriever Puppy Mill Dog Treats Toy Like Her Baby | DOGS

Missy and Buddy – they are a new couple from a backyard breeder who have really become attached to each other. We would love to keep them together to make their new lives that much easier. Missy is the blond cutie and is 2 years old. Buddy is the redhead and is 3 years old.

Missy loves attention, loves playing with the resident dogs in her foster home , but has to be reminded every so often to slow it down. This playing thing is new to her, so we’re sure she’ll get the hang of it.

Buddy’s foster describes him as confident and energetic, but calms down nicely. He loves to play with toys and balls . House training is coming along nicely. Buddy does have a strong prey drive and will need some work on the leash. Like lots of Goldens, he’ll eat as much as you give him.

A conventional fence is required.

If you’d like to seriously consider Buddy and MIssy, please fill out our online adoption application

Famous Puppy Mill Survivor Eleanor Enjoys New Life And New Home In Ames

Eleanor, a 5-year-old golden retriever who resides with her owners Jason Long and Mindi Callison of Ames, enjoys walks in the woods, grooming and pampering of all types, and being one of the pack in a home shared with four other rescue dogs.

She has a social media following and her TikTok videos have garnered millions of views.

Short in stature for a canine of her breed, her warm yet sad eyes conceal a history of trauma unfathomable to most animal lovers.

In August 2021, HavaHeart Rescue in Springfield, Missouri, purchased Eleanor from Seymour, Iowa, puppy breeder Daniel Gingerich in an emergency auction the USDA allowed the breeder to hold. HavaHeart Rescue was the highest bidder. Eleanor then went to live in a foster home before being adopted by the Ames couple in November 2021.

We had no idea that had auctioned off more than 300 dogs at a puppy mill auction, including Eleanor, which of course a lot of people dont even realize is a thing. It was an emergency dispersal sale, Callison said. Normally auctions have a catalog that goes out months in advance. This was all thrown together in two weeks. So local rescues in Missouri were like, clearly somethings wrong. No name was attached to the dog auction. But once they got all the paperwork, the rescue googled Daniel Gingerich and came across Bailing Out Benji and then told us about what happened to Eleanor.

When Eleanor came to live in Ames, she was slow to trust Callison and her husband.
