When Is A Puppy Potty Trained

As I mentioned earlier, I think this is a somewhat subjective question.

Why is it a subjective question? Because we often dont know exactly when our puppy is 100% potty trained.

Her are a few questions you might ask yourself when deciding if your puppy is potty trained:

  • Is she potty trained when she knows to go to the door and wait for your to let her out? What if she has an accident waiting for you to get to the door?
  • Is she potty trained after she learns to ring the bells on the door to let you know she needs to go out?
  • Is she potty trained if she hasnt had an accident for two weeks then all of a sudden one day she has an accident?
  • Is she potty trained if she does not have accidents 80%, 90%, or 100% of the time?

The thing is youll probably start to notice your puppy understands shes supposed to go potty outside very early, probably within the first week or so.

However, her understanding shes supposed to potty outside and getting her out to her potty spot is your responsibility.

My definition of a potty trained puppy is:

  • I can give my puppy freedom around the house without worrying about potty accidents.
  • My puppy will go to the back door when she has to potty and wait for me to let her out.

Now this definition does not eliminate all potty accidents. The only potty accidents that happen are because I didnt get to the back door in time to let my puppy outside to her potty spot.

Potty Breaks In Specific Areas

Youll probably finds the job to be a whole lot easier if you can get your dog to go in the same place every time. To give you an idea of where to choose for your puppy to take potty breaks, I recommend you look for a spot that is away from doors, windows, pathways, and play areas.

It also needs to be a place thats easy to clean, get to and away from the center of a room . Just make sure that you dont forget to clean it up, as theres nothing worse than leftovers getting leftover!

How To Crate Train Your Puppy

First, youll need to set up the crate

Add in some toys or a blanket in the crate to make it warm and inviting for your Golden Retriever puppy. A few treats can also help make your puppy feel loved and safe in their crate. When you set up the crate make sure it is the appropriate size for your puppy.

A big crate can seem like a good idea for a dog that can grow to weigh 75 pounds, but if your puppy is given too much room, they may feel that they can eliminate in their crate and still have their own space.

If you have a large crate, you can make your crate the appropriate size by closing off parts of the crate with a wooden panel. Also, make sure to put your crate in an area where people usually are to prevent your puppy from feeling lonely.

You can begin crate training by giving the command crate or bed and rewarding your dog with a treat when they successfully enter their crate.

Leave your dog in the crate until its time for them to go potty . As time goes on slowly extend the period of time between potty breaks and the time your dog is in the crate alone.

  • The fastest training method. Helping your dog learn to not eliminate during the night.
  • It gives the owner a break from constant supervision.
  • Prevent your puppy from wandering or sneaking off.

    Step 5: Close The Door

As your puppy learns to love their crate, slowly start closing the door.

At first, youll just close the door and open it right back up.

Then, youll close the door and feed them through it .

The next step is to give them a toy that will occupy them, like a frozen kong or a chew toy with peanut butter on it, and then shut the door while theyre distracted with it.

Open the door when theyre done with the toy.

If theyre comfortable with having the door closed for a short time, you can slowly work up to having the door closed for longer periods of time, and then move on to the next step.

Train Your Golden Retriever Puppy One Skill At A Time

Training your dog should be fun and engaging for both you and the dog. Effective training is supposed to be short, simple, and rewarding. Train one skill per session, and limit your sessions to just 15 minutes. Your commands should be consistent and straightforward. In other words, dont use different words for different sessions.

How Long Does It Take For Golden Retrievers To Reach Their Full Size

While maintaining the energy and personality of a puppy for their entire life, Golden Retrievers only take around one to two year to fully physically mature.

At this point, their bones will be fully grown, and they will require the same amount of physical exercise as an adult dog. Their mental maturity on the other hand, can take up to three years before being fully developed.

#2: What About Specific Foods And Cancer Risk

If you are reading my posts, you are interested in canine and feline nutrition and have likely read other websites that claim that kibble causes cancer or that there are cancer causing preservatives in pet food, but scientific evidence for these claims is very much lacking. These claims are also almost always made by either a distraught pet owner looking for someone to blame for unexpected cancer diagnosis or by a person or business trying to market their own special line of miracle cure-alls. Our old Labrador, Maggie, lived 14 ½ years eating primarily dry dog food , and ultimately died from a stroke-like event that hit her one morning. My 18-year-old cat Oliver is asleep next to me right now, has eaten dry commercial food his whole life and, other than his arthritis, is the picture of geriatric health; while our 3-year-old cat Cosette had eaten a variety of canned and dry foods over her short life, loved eating cat grass every day, and just died from transitional cell carcinoma in her left kidney . I dont blame Cosettes once-a-day cat grass habit for her developing cancer nor do I attribute Olivers longevity and health to dry food; cancer happens even to good cats and dogs.

    When To Begin Training

Training begins before you even bring your new puppy home. Some breeders start training pups before they find a family. Often this training includes things like mild crate training, mild potty training, and corrective behaviors. Of course, not all breeders do this. Not only that, but many people do not find their goldens via breeders, but rather shelters or rescues.

Regardless, its important to note that dogs should not be separated from their mothers or littermates before the ages of 7-8 weeks old. Studies have found this to be damaging to puppys psyche and emotional well-being, which can lead to behavioral issues down the road. Therefore, you can expect to begin training as soon as you pick up your 8-week-old golden retriever!

Needs Vary Schedule To Match Your Individual Puppy

There isnt a one-size-fits-all schedule that will work for every single puppy.

Instead, observe your pups natural rhythms so you can regularly be at your pups bathroom spot at the right time. This will give you ample opportunity to praise your puppy for doing the right thing, which is a huge benefit to teaching the right habits.

Do these strict routines seem like too much to handle?

Dont worry, as your puppy grows, they will need to go out less and less. Dont feel like you have to sacrifice your sanity to stick to a regimented schedule 100% of the time. Use your common sense and youll be fine. We all have a life to live outside of house training your best is good enough.

The Best Cure For Canine Cancer Is Prevention

Cancer begins when carcinogens damage DNA, then wait for just the right opportunity to create cancerous cells.

The good news is your dogs body has a built-in mechanism to kill cancer cells; a gene called p53. However, exposure to toxins and viruses can damage that gene and limit its ability to protect the body from the spread of cancerous cells.

We all know that treatment options for cancer arent all that effective. And that they can weaken your dogs immune system and do other types of damage to the body.

The best cure for cancer is to just not get it in the first place. Happily, there are easy, actionable steps you can take to prevent cancer in your furry family members. Here is a list that every pet owner should be aware of.

Do Spayed And Neutered Dogs Get Cancer More Often

Where I live, in America, its taken for granted that responsible owners spay or neuter their dogs. The population of homeless animals is still large enough that risking an unwanted litter is, to many owners, unthinkable. And spay/neuter is just what people do. But two papers were published, in 2013 and 2014, suggesting that these widely accepted surgical procedures may lead to increased long-term risk of certain kinds of cancers. These studies ignited a debate which had been smouldering for years: are there unwanted health consequences associated with altering a dogs levels of estrogen or testosterone?

The 2013 paper looked at Golden Retrievers. The authors reviewed data from veterinary hospitals, comparing Goldens who were diagnosed with various diseases, those who were not, and the spay/neuter status of each group; they found a correlation between spaying or neutering and cancers such as osteosarcoma, hemangiosarcoma, and mast cell cancer. The 2014 paper used a voluntary Internet-based survey to perform a similar investigation in the Vizsla breed. They also found correlations between spay/neuter status and mast cell cancer, hemangiosarcoma, and lymphoma.

Potty Train Your Golden Retriever Fast

Heres potty training in a nutshell:

  • Take them outside to potty
  • Praise them for going outside
  • Its pretty simple, but not always easy.

To potty train your puppy the fastest, use the Noah Strategy.

    Heres what it is:

    Never an

    Accident in the

    House

If you take them out before they realize they need to go, then theyll always go outside and never have an accident in the house.

Its not about pushing their limits, or getting them to tell you when they need to go outside, its all about making sure your puppy always goes potty outside and doesnt learn that its ok to go inside.

Heres where people mess up potty training

They dont take them outside often enough, so the puppy goes inside.

Then they get mad at the puppy, even though the puppy has no idea why, and they dont clean it up properly.

An hour later, the puppy has been running around the house, chugged a bunch of water, pees in the house again, and it starts all over

So how do we stop this cycle from happening?

    Before The Pup Arrives Home

In a lot of ways, training your Golden Retriever begins before the puppy even arrives home. Dog training demands a tremendous amount of energy and time from both you and your puppy. Not only will you need time, but a few supplies as well.

For this reason, we recommend you have the following supplies ready before your new puppy arrives:

How Long Should Your Golden Retriever Be In The Crate

Crates become a place of safety and security for a Golden Retriever when they are crate trained properly. However, because it is a small and confined space, you never want to leave your dog locked in a crate for too long. Puppies should only spend a maximum of 3 to 4 hours a day in their crate. This does not include overnight sleeping in the crate.

Use this table as a guideline for how long you should keep your dog in its crate during the day:

    Age of Golden Retriever
    17+ Weeks Old 4+ Hours

It is also essential to make sure your Golden Retriever feels at home in its crate. Remember to associate the crate with positivity rather than punishment. This will help the crate training process and allow your dog to have a better night of rest.

English Cream Golden Retriever Aka Platinum Retriever Aka White Retriever

The English cream golden retriever is known by several different names in the U.S. Besides English Cream Golden Retriever, this breed also goes by Platinum Retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, and also simply White Retriever or White Golden Retriever.

Although there is just one golden retriever breed, there are slight differences, except for the coat color, between the English and American retriever types. However, the pale platinum coat is the trait that made English creams sought-after and popular.

What Is The Easiest Dog To Potty Train

QUESTION: What is the easiest dog to potty train?

ANSWER: Border Collie, Poodle, German Shepherd, Golden Retriever, Doberman Pinscher.

Our list is based on Stanley Corens blog post about smartest dog breeds.

I am not an expert of all dog breeds. However, I have worked with many different breeds apprenticing as a trainer at our local doggie daycare.

That being said I have worked extensively with Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers and the majority of my experience is based off these two highly trainable breeds.

I have talked to many trainers and in general the more trainable breeds tend to learn potty training more quickly.

    Crate Training A Golden Retriever

Crate training is a hugely beneficial skill to teach your puppy. It will ensure your puppy cannot do any damage if left unsupervised and creates a safe place for them to retreat to if they are tired.

Golden Retrievers are wired to need to spend time with people. We need to help prepare them for separation at some point.

Crate training will help to prepare them but you need to understand that leaving your puppy alone for too long when young can be problematic in the long term!

Its a good idea to have some rules when crate training golden retriever puppies:

    • Dont disturb or interact with your dog when he is in his crate.
    • Never force him into or out of his crate.
    • Provide nice things for him in his crate .
    • Leave the door open and have the crate accessible all the time!
    • Feed him his meals in there.
    • Only shut the door for short periods of time to start with.

Sticking to the rules will help to create positive associations with the crate. It will teach your Golden their crate is a place he can retreat to and rest .

You should not start crate training with the door closed.

Increasing the time they spend in their crate with the door closed can take two or three weeks. You can use the following tips to gradually increase the time your golden retriever puppy spends in their crate:

  • Have a kong prepared with a small amount of tasty food pressed into it.
  • Place the kong into the crate.
  • Allow your puppy to follow the kong and start eating.
  • Close the crate door and stand next to it.
  • Golden Retriever Sleeping Tips

How Long Does It Take to House Train a Golden Retriever ...

Although being a central aspect of a dogs health and significant portion of his life, sleeping is often an overlooked element when raising a golden retriever. Many owners experience problems when it comes to their golden retrievers sleeping habits, we will teach you a few golden retriever sleeping tips to handle these problems.

Dogs sleep a lot when they arent doing anything, this was inherited from their wolf counterparts, wolfs can lay around and sleep for extended periods of time until they go on another hunt, dogs have retained a portion of this sleep ability. We usually sleep for about 8 hours a night, on the other hand it is not unusual for a golden retriever to sleep longer than that, even more common if it cant go outside to play cause of weather or for some another reason. It wouldnt be uncommon for a dog to sleep in the middle of the morning right after breakfast, be pretty active for a while until lunch and afterwards for a while, then sleep a couple hours in the afternoon, have dinner, play vigorously and attempt to get you to join him, then call it a night and sleep for another 8 hours and waking in time for breakfast again in the following morning.

I will discuss a number of golden retriever sleeping tips that will improve your ability to manage when and how long your dog should sleep, this way you and your neighbors will enjoy quieter nights.

Most Common Types Of Canine Cancer

There are a handful of cancers that afflict canines most frequently. Those include:

    • Lymphoma: Affects the dogs immune system, occurring in the lymph nodes and bone marrow. Progresses in five stages, rapidly if untreated.
    • Hemangiosarcoma: More common in dogs than any other species, this cancer starts in the blood vessels but spreads without warning to the liver, spleen, heart, or other organs. Remains undetected until it is very advanced.
    • Mast Cell Tumors: Very common in older and mixed breed dogs, this form of cancer affects areas of the body with high levels of enzymes and histamines, such as the skin, intestines, and respiratory system.
    • Melanoma: This type of skin cancer usually starts in the dogs mouth and around the lips but is also seen in the eyes, nail beds, and footpads. It spreads through the deep tissue of the skin to other organs.
    • Osteosarcoma: This bone cancer is most common in large breeds, is very aggressive, and spreads rapidly. It can present in any bone, but is most common in the limbs.

Thinking About Getting A Golden Retriever Puppy

Theres a reason that retrievers are the nations most beloved pet. Theyre adorable, loyal, and great with kids.

But no puppy is easy! All of them will go through difficult stages that will be frustrating at times, and one of the hardest surely has to be potty-training.

So, before youve even picked the cutest puppy in the litter, be sure that you have the time and the commitment to truly give it the dedication it needs so you can enjoy all the wonderful things your new puppy will bring to your life.

Make Training A Regular Part Of The Day

None of us master skills without regular practice, and the same goes for your canine companion. Speed up the process by including dog training during daily activities.

Is it time for dinner? Then practice sit before you put the bowl in front of your dog. Are you about to take a walk? Call your dogs name just before you pick up the leash . Practice down and stay after your dogs walk, when he is more likely to respond to your cue. There are many opportunities to practice commands in everyday situations, so use that to your advantage!

What Can You Use To Predict Your Puppys Size

Here are a couple of rule-of-thumb guides to predict your pups adult weight.

Firstly, if your dog had puppies, an average newborn doubles their birthweight by one week of age. After that, their weight gain is a cumulative 5 10 % increase day on day.

But by six weeks of age, small and big dogs gain weight very differently. Small breeds tend to gain 5 oz. a week, with larger breeds gaining nearly six times this at around 2lb 5 oz. a week.

How Potty Training & Crate Training Work Together

Dogs are very clean animals and they naturally try to avoid going potty where they sleep or relax.

We can use this to our advantage by having them sleep in a crate, and then putting them in a crate when we dont want them to go potty, such as when we want them to take a nap or go to sleep for the night, or if were unable to supervise them during the day.

However, this can make crate training tough because if a puppy is in the crate and they have to go potty, theyll usually whine or bark.

If we let them out , they may learn that whining and barking gets them out of the crate even if they dont have to go potty, so they may start barking and crying every time theyre in the crate.

So its a delicate dance of knowing when your puppy will have to go potty, taking them out before they start whining, and making sure to never put them in the crate with a full bladder.
