Always Be Vigilant When Sailing

In choppy waters or windy conditions, a dog on a boat could panic. Be sure to keep her confined, or at least wearing a life jacket and on a leash. If your dog does fall overboard, keep your eyes on his or her location at all time. Use your voice to help guide your dog to a spot that is closer to you so you can rescue him or her.

Because of the risk for falling off or swimming away from the boat, dogs should not be allowed to swim off of the boat off-tether. A long lead and/or swimming with a human friend will keep him close by.

Chances are your golden will not need a life jacket; that being said, we still recommend having one on hand. Let your golden experience the water without the life jacket and gain confidence on their own. We find our golden needing the life jacket after a long day of swimming. He loves the water so much he continues to swim even when he is tired. 

At this point, he wants to be held in the pool, so he doesnt have to work as hard but refuses to get out! So putting on the life jacket helps him relax and not have to work as hard. So after a good amount of swimming, jumping, and playing, we put the life jacket on him, and we know he can continue to swim safely. 

Theis the one we use with our Golden Retriever.

It provides the right amount of buoyancy in the water but not too restrictive so they can still run and play on land. We find the front neck float really helps keep their head above water and helps keeps their ears from getting too much water in them. They can also still potty while wearing the life jacket. 

For Golden Retrievers, we recommend the large or extra-large. Our golden is one-year-old and roughly 55-60lbs, and comfortable fits in a large. Check the sizing chart to ensure proper sizing. 

How To Keep Your Golden Safe In The Water

While swimming is great fun, there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your friend is safe. If you always take precautions when swimming with your dog, you will be sure to have a great time!

• Dont throw your dog into the water. Golden Retrievers may love the water, but this will traumatize them. Instead introduce water bit by bit and make it fun for your dog!

• Be aware of the temperature. The thick undercoat of a Golden Retriever means that it does not get as cold as other dogs. But this does not mean your dog can withstand serious cold weather. If the water is getting too cold its time to head home.

• Dont go too deep. Make sure to stay in the shallows when teaching your dog to swim. Up to your thighs is a perfect depth for a puppy to learn to swim.

• Be vigilant. Always watch your dog while they are swimming. Pay particular attention when swimming anywhere with a current. You never know when they might get into trouble.

• Stop if your dog seems stressed. You dont want swimming to be a bad experience for your pup. Make sure to keep it positive and fun at all times. 

• Think about using a doggy life vest while teaching your dog to swim. This can be a great tool to give you and your pup a bit of support while learning. It is particularly useful for adult dogs who might be more nervous. 

Why Your Golden Retriever Suddenly Hated Water

If your dog has suddenly started hating water and is trying to avoid it actively, something could have happened that is making it painful for them to be in water. The two most common reasons are open wounds which could be in spots that are not easy to see and bad experiences.

An example of a bad experience that may have happed is that they got too deep into the water last time and now they are afraid it might happen again when they get into the water.

Physically, Goldens are completely mature by 2 years of age. Mentally, well, that depends on the individual, but usually not before 3 years of age. Even though Goldens are physically mature by 2, you may notice changes in them well past that time. Remember, by nature Goldens are fun-loving and happy-go-lucky, so their perceived maturity may be less because of it.

Dog Breeds That Dont Like Water

Some dog breeds arent born for swimming and its better that they avoid going into deep water. These include top-heavy, short-nosed and short legged dog breeds, such as pugs, boxers, dachshunds and bulldogs. They may tire easily or have difficulty staying afloat. Its also good to note that small dog breeds might not be able to tolerate cold water temperatures.

American Labrador Or English Labrador

Are you aware that there are actually two distinct sub-groupsof Labradors? There is the American Lab and the English Lab, and they arebecoming more and more distinct as time passes.

I actually think there might be a time when you see the AKCand UKC recognize them as separate breeds.

The American Lab is the slenderer, more athletic of the two groups.They have been bred for the AKC hunt tests and field trials. As a result of thesespecific breeding goals, the American version spends more time in the waterthan their British counterparts.

On the other side of the pond, breeders and Labrador owners typically use their dogs for as show dogs. These breeders hold more strictly to the breed standard including a thicker body and square-shaped head. This look has been recognized as the more standard Labrador build.

However, as I mentioned above, I think that might change inthe next 20-25 years.

Because the English Labrador spends less time in the water,the swimming gene is not being preserved by the breeders.

So, it is possible that the English Labrador will eventuallylose that gene altogetheror, at the very least, it will become more randomamong the breed like it is among German Shorthairs.

They are named retrievers for a reason! Swimming isnt the only instinct Goldens Retrievers have. They are naturally born retrievers also! Retrieving in the water is what the golden retriever is bred to do. So you will find them very interested in playing fetch in the water. This will likely help teach your golden to get comfortable swimming. 

Our golden constantly retrievers the goggles floating around in the pool. Hes on a mission when he spots the goggles, even if they are attached to your face. He will still try to retrieve them. This is why goldens are the best and have quite the personality. 

Can Golden Retrievers Swim Naturally

Golden Retrievers have the innate ability to swim, but that does not mean they can swim like fish. This is especially true with respect to puppies. Their body structure and genetics assist them in paddling in the water.

Golden Retrievers love swimming and are good swimmers but it does not mean they can swim for any duration of time and anywhere. Hence it is important to remember that they are dogs and they have their limitations.

So, do Goldens like to swim? Yes. But not every Golden Retriever likes to swim. As i told you my dog Simba hates water and he is really scared of it. The reason why some Goldens are scared of water is that they are introduced to water in an inappropriate way. Their first experience of water might have been scary and disturbing for them.
