Getting To Know Your Goldendoodle

Labradoodle VS Goldendoodle | Which Poodle Mix Breeds Is Better?

The main reason that the Golden Retriever and the Standard Poodles were bred in the later part of the twentieth century was to get a guide dog for people who were visually impaired as well as those who would work well with people who had allergies. The breeding was carried out by Australian and North American breeders.

When the low shedding Poodle is mixed with the gentle and agile Golden Retriever, you get a dog in the form of a Goldendoodle that is just too good to be true.

Are Goldendoodles Good For Families

Yes! They are a highly playful breed who loves to socialize and be around their owners as much as possible. They are especially great if you have children around, as they are full of energy and love to play. They are also safe to have around young kids, as they arent known for biting. In fact, its been shown that crossbreeds with retriever lineages are five times less likely to bite a child than a Shepherd or Doberman.

Food & Diet Requirements

Goldendoodles are fairly high-energy dogs and thus, need a diet that can provide for their energy needs. This is especially true during the first year because they are growing rapidly, and theyll need food tailored for growing pups. The food that you give your Goldendoodle should be of the best quality that you can afford, free from filler ingredients like soy and corn, with an animal-based protein as the first listed ingredient or at least among the top three. Theyll need 14 cups of high-quality dry food per day , divided into two meals to reduce the chance of gastric torsion and bloat.

We recommend giving your pup lean meats occasionally as a healthy treat and for variety, and as with all dogs, they need to be provided with clean, fresh water at all times.

How Big Does A Poodle Golden Retriever Mix Get

Goldendoodle: The Golden Retriever Poodle Mixed Breed

Since the Goldendoodle consists of two very comparable breeds in terms of height and weight, theres actually not that many outliers as is often the case with other breeds.

Male Goldendoodle Height: 2224 inches

Male Goldendoodle Weight: 6075 lbs

Female Goldendoodle Height: 1922 inches

Female Goldendoodle Weight: 4565 lbs

However, theyre only comparable when referring to the Standard sized Poodle as a mixed breed partner.

The Poodle comes in three varieties:

  • Toys 10 inches and under
  • Miniatures are 10-15 inches
  • Standards are 15 or more

Your result can be completely different if youre mixing a very small Poodle or one that has a history of smaller ancestors.

Mini Goldendoodle Key Facts

Other names: Mini Groodle, Mini Golden Doodle

As the chart above shows, mini Goldendoodles are not part of a dog breed group , but are considered a hybrid. This is the term used for a crossbreed dog.

As mentioned above, mini Goldendoodles are a hybrid or a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Poodle.

Hybrid dogs are more unpredictable in size, weight, appearance, and traits than purebred dogs. For example, in one litter of puppies, one Goldendoodle pup may have a curly coat, another may have a wavy coat, and another may have a straight coat.

Choosing a mini Goldendoodle is like choosing a chocolate from an assorted box of chocolates. You never know quite what youre going to get.

But for many, the surprise is part of the fun of Doodlehood.

Other Mini Mix Breeds

For other dogs, miniaturization is more complicated and less predictable.

This is because getting a smaller version requires using a smaller, but altogether different breed.

When using this method theres no way to know for sure which parent the puppies will take after.

In fact, theres no guarantee that this will make a smaller dog.

So What Goldendoodle Generation Is The Best

Goldendoodles are generally happy and active dogs, and whats most important is if you suffer from allergies.

When looking for non-shedding and hypoallergenic Groodles, the best generation are F2b, F1b, and F2bb.

If youre not really bothered by allergies and shedding, then you can go for the F1 or rather just pick the generation whose coat you might want for your Groodle.

History Of The Goldendoodle

The first recorded cases of intentional breeding between golden retrievers and poodles happened in the late 60s.

However, it wasnt until the 1990s that the Goldendoodle was officially considered to be a hybrid breed. After breeders saw the success of the Labradoodle, they started breeding poodles with golden retrievers.

The main goal of the crossbreeding was to create a breed that maintained thethe low-dander and low-shedding traits associated with the poodle and had the friendly nature and intelligence that is associated with the golden retriever.

Since the Goldendoodle breed is still young, most of the puppies available on the market are the result of first-generation breeding. There are also, however, many cases of breeding between Goldendoodles.

How To Care For The Goldendoodle

Cute Dogs: Golden Retriever Poodle Mix

No matter the size of the Goldendoodle, they will need about one hour of physical activity every day. This could be in the form of brisk walks around the neighborhood, a run at the dog park, or a backyard training session.

As I noted earlier, these dogs need regular social interaction and shouldnt be left alone for long hours. Otherwise, they may develop separation anxiety or show undesirable and destructive behaviors such as barking or digging.

To ensure good behavior, your Goldendoodle will need plenty of attention and socialization throughout its lifespan.

History And Original Purpose

This hybrid dog breed first appeared in the United States in the 1990s.

Produced from mixing a Golden Retriever with a standard Poodle, the Goldendoodle rose to fame during a time when so-called designer or hybrid dogs were all the rage.

Hybrid breeds are actually not new in the canine world, although having an official name for them is quite new. In fact, every single purebred dog breed we know today began as some form of hybrid dog breed. This includes the Golden Retriever and Poodle.

This makes sense once you realize that hybrid means a dog bred from mixed parentage .

Every purebred dog today came from the same original ancestor: the gray wolf .

In fact, the scientific name for the domestic canine is Canis lupus familiaris .

So why are some people, and in particular certain dog breeders, upset about the introduction of hybrid dog breeds?

Hi Were Royal Minidoodles

We are premier breeders of English Cream Goldendoodles also known as white goldendoodles or British type goldendoodles. We specialize in the miniature stature of goldendoodles using championed lines from both English Cream Golden Retrievers and long legged white Toy Poodles. When we researched our breed we discovered some important things. The health benefits of the English Cream Golden Retriever were superior to that of the American Golden Retriever. The intelligence of the poodle as well as the low to minimal shedding coat gave families with allergies an opportunity to welcome one of our fur babies into their homes. Lastly, the smaller size of the toy poodle produced a manageable size for all families. We decided to breed this combination to offer beautiful, healthy, mini goldendoodle puppies that give us the best of both worlds!

Will Mini Goldendoodles Shed

Mini Goldendoodle – The Miniature Size Goldendoodle

Whether or not a Goldendoodle shed’s is largely dependent on how much poodle they have. There are some exceptions but generally speaking, when you have more poodle you have less shedding. Because poodles do not shed anymore than you or I do, they bring that fantastic trait to the Golden doodle coat. When they are only 50% poodle, most Goldendoodles will still have some light shedding. As a general rule I try to encourage families looking for hypoallergenic dogs to look for a Goldendoodle that is at least 75% poodle which would be an F1B or F1BB Goldendoodle.

Introducing The Gene For Dwarfism

Dwarfism is a medical condition known as achondroplasia.

Introducing the gene for dwarfism is another way breeders can get a smaller dog.

This method doesnt exactly miniaturize the dog.

But, shorter limbs, a longer back, and sometimes an overly large head are often the result.

Does it Cause Any Problems?

This is a fairly easy way for breeders to create a smaller dog. But it results in a lack of normal bone growth and structural deformities.

Some breeds like the Dachshund and the Pembroke Welsh Corgi carry this gene.

Using the gene for dwarfism to create smaller dogs is associated with joint and back problems, including intervertebral disc disease .

Mini Goldendoodle Coat Types

Happy National Puppy Day! This my puppy, Violet

Mini Goldendoodle coat types range from super straight to crazy curly.

Again, this is due to the wide variation between the two parent breeds. The Golden Retriever has a smooth coat and the Poodle has a curly coat. The result?

There are four different coats types:

But wait. You may have seen pics of Goldendoodle puppies and their coats look pretty similar.

This is because coat type isnt prominent when a mini Goldendoodle is a puppy. But as puppies begin to mature, curls start to pop or spring up.

Over time, cute curls, waves, or fairly straight coats replace the mini Goldendoodle puppy coats. Seeing how your Goldendoodle puppys coat transitions is just another factor that brings more fun to puppy days.

Its worth pointing out that, if you are counting on a very specific look, a Goldendoodle might not be the ideal choice for you.

Cross Breeding A Perfect Goldendoodle

Just to achieve a certain temperament, working ability, and appearance, humans have been cross-breeding dog types for millennia.

This is mainly how most purebreds like the Australian Shephard, the Affenpinscher, the Brussels griffon, the Leonberger, the Doberman pinscher, the German wirehaired pointer, and the Black Russian Terrier, became popular.

But simply cross-breeding two breeds constantly is not enough. To be able to achieve consistency in size, temperament, and appearance, breeders need to carefully select puppies with the desired characteristics and breed them for several generations to establish their traits.

The demand for hybrids like the Goldendoodle became high in the last 10-20 years. This is because people generally want dogs that are different from the dogs they are used to.

F1 = Golden Retriever X Poodle

The F stands for filial and is simply a way to denote generation. So an F1 Goldendoodle means First Generation Goldendoodle. This is the initial cross, so one parent would be a purebred Golden Retriever and the other a purebred Poodle.

The F1 generation is a good choice for those who are particularly attached to the Golden Retriever as you are close to the roots and will definitely preserve some Golden Retriever traits in both personality and physical appearance.

These dogs typically have loose, wavy coats. The downside of the F1 generation is they tend to still shed someless than a purebred Golden Retriever but more than some of the later generations we discuss below.

The Appeal Of The Goldendoodle

When the mixed breed craze began in the early 1990s, Goldendoodles were seen as excellent family dogs. Theyre affectionate, highly sociable, and very trainable.

But, another reason these dogs became so loved was the claim that they are hypoallergenic.

In reality, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic breed. Any dog can potentially trigger allergic reactions. This is because the protein found in the dogs saliva, skin, and urine causes allergens.

Many people also mistakenly believe that Poodles dont shed.

They actually do. But you dont notice it because the excess fur gets caught in their curly coat.
