Why Should You Adopt

Southern Arizona Golden Retriever Rescue

Dog adoption and cat adoption saves lives. Adopt a dog or adopt a cat and you’ll have a friend for life.

What is the difference between adopting a dog, adopting a cat, adopting a kitten or adopting a puppy versus getting dogs for sale, cats for sale, puppies for sale or kittens for sale from a dog breeder or a cat breeder?

When someone is breeding puppies or breeding kittens, they are creating new dogs and cats who need homes. Some people are interested in a very specific breed of dog, cat, puppy or kitten and they think the only way to find that specific breed is to buy a dog for sale or buy a cat for sale from a puppy breeder or a kitten breeder. Yet animal shelters are filled with dogs and cats who must find homes.

So rather than buying a dog or puppy for sale from a dog breeder or buying a cat or kitten for sale from a cat breeder, we encourage people to adopt a dog, adopt a cat, adopt a puppy or adopt a kitten at their local animal shelter, SPCA, humane society or pet rescue group.

Why Adopt A Golden Retriever From A Rescue

While there are many breeders out there creating amazing little golden retriever puppies out there for you to buy, there are also hundreds of thousands of golden retrievers across the country that need adopting. This is for a variety of reasons.

  • First, Goldens are very popular pets, so there are unethical breeders out there creating puppies for which they cant find homes.
  • Second, many people adopt a gorgeous little pup, only to realize that they grow into a big, shedding dog that requires lots of care and attention. They decide that they simply dont want them anymore.
  • Many loving pet owners need to give up their pets due to a family member who has allergies, moving to a place that doesnt allow animals, moving abroad, or other unavoidable circumstances.
  • Sadly, there are also people who die and leave their pets behind with no-one to care for them, or they simply abandon them.

These are the golden retrievers that find themselves in rescue centers, waiting for new homes.

OUR EXPERIENCE: We had friends buy a Golden Retriever with all the best intentions. Unfortunately, they learned that owning a Golden Retriever did not fit their lifestyle and ended up putting their dog up for adoption.

What Should You Know Before Adopting A Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever shed a lot, and they have long hair. If youre worried about a few strands of hair ending up well, everywhere then get a dog that doesnt shed. These dogs love families because someone is usually home. Theyre not precisely independent, at least no until theyre older dogs. Having someone around isnt just a luxury. Its a necessity for a lot of GRDs. The best thing you can do is research the breed extensively before getting one. Furthermore, fostering a Golden Retriever is one of the best ways to ascertain whether its the right breed for you.

The rescued dogs are then placed into Foster homes or “Foster With Intent To Adopt” homes until they are permanently placed with their new “Forever Homes.” Arizona Golden Rescue is a “Non-Shelter Rescue” with all dogs staying in Foster homes till adopted.

Choosing A Golden Retriever Rescue

Your first consideration should be the location. After all, adopting a Golden Retriever from your home state will prove less challenging than adopting a dog on the other side of the country. Once youve selected a couple of Rescue groups to approach, make sure they have reasonable Goldens to match you with. After this, grill the groups for knowledge. Ensure that youre dealing with experts. Refrain from dealing with Rescue groups who lack insight into their dogs. They should be able to tell you when the dogs were last vaccinated and whether or not they are spayed or neutered. When youre comfortable with your chosen Rescue, schedule a meet-and-greet with their dogs. Oh, and more thing, some Golden Rescue leaders grow attached to their dogs and have difficulty parting ways. So make sure that they are as comfortable with you as you are with them.

Golden Retriever Rescue groups and organizations differ in many ways, so gather all information before committing to a Golden Retriever adoption group of any kind. To aid your search, weve compiled a list of the best Golden Retriever Rescues in the United States. All of the Golden Rescues on this page have been prescreened online. We collected Google reviews and Facebook feedback to come up with this list. In the future, well be adding interviews as well.

Rescuing Vs Adopting A Puppy

Golden Retreiver, Puppies, For, Sale, In, Tucson, Arizona, AZ, Catalina Foothills, Lake Havasu City,

Rescuing a golden retriever while its still young and impressionable is the closest experience youll get to adopt one from a breeder. However, this doesnt mean youll receive the same quality of puppy, either. Usually, dogs that are surrendered to rescues or rescued off the street dont have any breeding or parental history attached to them.

Typically, this wouldnt be a problem many people take pride in rescuing dogs that need homes. However, it isnt always possible to tell what medical conditions a puppy will have when they grow older. You wont be able to determine what the puppy will grow up to look like, either you might think youre adopting a golden retriever from a golden retriever puppy rescue, but it could be a mix or a different breed altogether!

To be fair, these problems can be inherent with irresponsible breeders and not just the golden retriever rescue, but lets operate under the assumption that you would be adopting from an ideal, responsible breeder. With a breeder-quality puppy, you have a good idea of what youll get from an appearance and a health standpoint. In comparison, a rescue puppy has no such guarantees.

That aside, though, the puppys temperament is where you can expect a relatively blank slate. While breeders select for personality to an extent, a dogs temperament is also very dependent on learned behaviors. As long as you adopt a puppy while its young, their character will be shaped mainly by how you train and socialize them.

No 2022 Cgrr Calendar

We know that many of you are eagerly awaiting our CGRR Calendar sneak peek. After 13 years of having what we feel is the best calendar ever, CGRR will not be having one this year. It has been a bit of a rough 3 months for Deb, as she started having episodes of rapid heartbeat, tachycardia, dizziness and just generally not feeling well. After 3 days in the hospital, having angiogram, cardiac MRI, echocardiogram and another test, we did find out that her heart is very healthy – which is a good thing, but what is causing the problem? The cardiologist feels it is anxiety related, but we wonder if it is an after effect from the COVID vaccine, as she had a bad reaction from her first shot – very similar to what is going on now. She is on a beta blocker, and anti-anxiety meds, which have helped, but we cannot seem to get things normalized.

This has been very frustrating for Deb. Anyone that knows her knows she is not a person to sit still. This has kind of knocked the wind out of her sails, and she has been told by her doctors to try to take it easy for a while.

Don’t get too down about missing the 2022 calendar. Calendar photos that were submitted this year are in a folder with Mary and will be used for the next calendar. Mary loves creating this work of art every year and she is excited to make next year’s calendar better than ever! Thanks for your support and understanding!

Owning A Golden Retriever

Before you consider rescuing a golden retriever from a golden retriever rescue or purchasing one from a breeder, you should think about whether a golden retriever is the right dog for you at all. Too many dogs end up in rescues and shelters every year because they dont fit in well with their adopted families. While golden retrievers are incredibly happy and flexible dogs, theyre not appropriate for everyone.

Golden retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs that could also function as companions. These dogs were bred to have incredibly soft mouths for retrieving ducks and other game after a kill, even in water or marshy areas. As such, theyre devoted, gentle, friendly, and often very smart.

Are Golden Retrievers Expensive To Maintain

Golden retrievers can be relatively expensive to maintain, mostly because they are large dogs and, therefore, generally need to eat a fair amount.

They can also have steep medical bills when they get older as they are prone to a few medical conditions, such as joint issues and cataracts. You should probably expect to spend at least $1,000 a year maintaining a golden retriever.

At the Southern Arizona Golden Retriever Rescue, an all-volunteer team leads the organization dedicated to improving the lives of Golden Retrievers and their adoptive families. Thats their entire mission: to help the whole rescue community thrive. For the dogs in their program, special testing services are conducted, meant to ensure the behavior characteristics of the pets before adoption. They also have events and a book club for members of the SAGRR.

According to their websites, their rescue dogs come into care for many reasons, including allergies, divorce, illness, or even death, sadly. They offer services on an ongoing basis for adoptive parents, including health, education, and training for the new family members. As a volunteer-run rescue, they are constantly looking for community members to assist with the services operations. This includes helping to transport and assist in the recuperation of these special Golden Retrievers in the state of Arizona. Other tasks available to volunteers include logistical help with administrative tasks, public relations, and, of course, fundraising efforts.
