About Southeastern Virginia Golden Retriever Rescue

Prior to being adopted all goldens are fully vaccinated, heartworm and stool tested, dewormed and treated for heartworms as indicated, started on heartworm preventative, spayed or neutered, and micro-chipped. SEVA GRREAT is successful due to the tremendous amount of time given by our volunteers, generous donations received from Golden Retriever and animal lovers, and monies received from fundraising events an adoption fees. By the time an average dog enters its adoptive home it will have been supported by 10-12 volunteers and will have cost an average of nearly $700 for medical and foster care and other support expenses.

Update On The Cdc Suspension

The CDC suspension on dogs entering the US from “high-risk” rabies countries has gone into effect July 14, 2021. SEVA GRREAT is actively involved with the non-profit rescues across the country to request an exemption from the suspension. A letter to the CDC was organized by our national representative and signed by over 50 non-profit rescues. The exemption request is for those non-profits who obtain the appropriate permits issued by USDA-APHIS to bring the dogs into the US. Animal Wellness Action is the group we are working with to represent us in Washington and with the CDC. We are also using this letter to explain to members of the Senate and House what the issue is and why the requested exemption will address the concerns of the CDC. While we know a response will not come quickly, initial conversations with the CDC indicate they may be open to discussing this requested exemption.

Adoption Applications Closed For The Holidays

Interested adopters and SEVA GRREAT supporters:

During the winter holiday season we are going to temporarily paws the adoption process. We would like you to understand why, so here are the reasons.

First, it is very important for a newly adopted Golden to join his/her forever family when things are at their most “normal”. The holidays are anything but “normal” in most households ~ it’s a hectic time of year with more of everything ~ more traveling, more time away from home shopping and visiting, more guests, more food…and this can be very stressful for a new Golden family member.

Second, our dedicated volunteers are also busy with their families and need a well-deserved break during the holidays.

Also, many of the millions of homeless pets in North America are pets that were returned or abandoned as a result of an “impulse” buy. Since many pets are bought impulsively during the holidays, we support “no pet buying” over the holiday season.

Adoption applications are now closed and will reopen in the new year. Soon, we also will not be posting any dogs as available for adoption to our already approved families until after the holidays.

In the meantime, all the Goldens in our care are happily spending this time with their wonderful foster families and are safe and sound and happy ! They’re even probably sharing in the spoils of leftover turkey.
