Golden Retriever Cost Breakdown:

3 Adorable Designer Dog Breeds | Petland Florida

Now that you know the price range to buy a golden retriever, we need to examine the additional golden retriever costs that you can expect when you bring your new puppy home like veterinary care, food, toys, and more. Its important to remember that when you buy a puppy from a reputable breeder, you are more likely to encounter lower golden retriever costs over the lifetime of your pet.

Its important to give your golden retriever the health checks they need in order to grow strong and healthy. According to the American Kennel Club, there are some essential steps and vet bills youll need to take care of before your golden retrievers first birthday:

  • Full physical exam: $50 $100
  • Recommended vaccines : $100 $200
  • Rabies vaccine: $10 $20
  • Heartworm preventatives: $70 $200
  • Total price of veterinary expenses: $335 $665

To ensure you get a healthy dog, its generally better to buy a golden retriever that has already had its first round of health checks, vaccines, and paperwork. This will ultimately save you time and money on your golden retriever price because breeders often pay lower veterinary rates than individuals do.

Distemper, for example, is a highly contagious disease that attacks the gastrointestinal, respiratory, and nervous systems of dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure just a lot of expenses and stress which really adds to your overall golden retriever cost.

Or if an owner does not keep on top of his pets health, he may wind up spending quite a bit of money on vet bills and medical fees.

So, how can you save money and still have a healthy, happy puppy?

The Price Of A Golden Retriever

A golden retriever puppy can cost up to $3,500, depending on multiple factors, like the place you get it from, its age, and the dogs parents.

One of the most important aspects when getting a dog, aside from making sure it will be a purebred, is to make sure that the pet is healthy and doesnt have any birth flaws. This means that if youre planning to go to an animal rescue center to get a dog, make sure you visit one that works with a veterinarians office or at least keeps background health records of the dogs.

Usually, animal shelters have professional staff to take care of the animals, feed them and give them medication, but that doesnt mean that the pet cant have a birth flaw or an illness that cant be cured. Some pet rescue centers will offer free adoptions, while some will charge anywhere from $200 to $600.

Average Golden Retriever Price For Breeders

Golden Retriever

On average, the low cost of breeding is around $15,828. However, most breeders will find that they spend closer to $7,744 to breed and raise a litter of healthy pups.

And for those who are aiming for show quality litters, the cost is even higher. In fact, breeders who are breeding show quality puppies will likely spend upwards of $24,000 in the end!

For a more conclusive breakdown of the process responsible breeders go through to ensure their litters are born healthy, .

But does that mean if you get a puppy at a lower Golden Retriever price it is more likely to have health issues?

Lets find out.

Did you know that puppies make up a massive part of a billion-dollar pet industry?

While this may come as no surprise to most of us dog lovers out there, the truth is that not everyone who has jumped on the puppy-selling bandwagon understands or even cares about responsible breeding practices.

And who pays the price in the long run? The puppies and their owners.

You see, puppies who are bred by irresponsible breeders are more likely to have health and temperamental issues down the road.

So, while you may be paying less for a puppy upfront when going through one of these sources, in the long run, you could wind up paying much, much more.

But how do you avoid puppy mills, backyard breeders, and unprofessional online sellers?

The Cost Of A Golden Retriever Owner License

Some US states will require you to get a dog owners license before getting a Golden Retriever. The license itself shouldnt cost more than $50. Some niche clubs will charge you $100 or more for a subscription if youd like to enroll your pet.

Healthcare Cost

Golden Retrievers are prone to developing all kinds of diseases, including skin problems, hypothyroidism, cancer or allergies, even if they dont show initially on their health records. These illnesses wont show up at a certain age and any of them might occur when you least expect it. Skin problems can be avoided with proper attention.

Among the most common illnesses your Golden Retriever might have to face are:

  • heart conditions
  • eye problems
  • hip or elbow dysplasia

To avoid these diseases or spot them early enough to be able to cure them, periodic visits to a vet are recommended. An early visit just after you bought your puppy is a great idea, seeing that along with a general health consultation, your dog will also receive its annual immunization and health tests. An initial vet visit should cost around $300.

Golden Retriever Price Small Dogs Vs Large Dogs

According to the American Kennel Club, the total lifetime cost of raising a dog depends on the dogs breed, age, and size.

In fact, studies show that smaller dogs may have a lower monthly cost but will incur the most money in the long run due to their longer lifespans.

Larger dogs may cost their owners more per month but will cost less than smaller breeds overall.

On average, the total lifetime cost of owning a dog is between $14,480 and $15,782.

The University of Veterinary Medicine found that the first year of owning a puppy is actually the most expensive for dog owners. Many pet parents spent $2,674 for the smaller breeds, with larger dog breeds costing closer to $3,536.

This is due to the fact that preparing for a puppy, buying his food, toys, bedding, and more, will all be included in the overall, upfront cost of purchasing or rescuing your puppy.

Is It Better To Buy From A Pet Store Or A Private Breeder

How much is that doggie in the window?

You may save money and trouble by doing your homework and finding a puppy outside a pet shop.

People buy dogs from pet stores because they are uninformed or making an emotional decision, said Barry Wyerman, secretary of the Oakland County Kennel Club. People say they cant go into a pet store it tugs at their heart strings to see puppies living in these 2-by-2 crates. They cant even go in, because they know where those dogs come from, see how cute they are and its an extremely emotional conflict.

But on a recent Friday evening, Petland Novi was full of people cooing over the puppies behind glass in those crates.

One woman said she brought her daughter and some of her fellow Girl Scouts, just to look.

Employees brought out a Yorkie and a peke-a-poo, a mix of a Pekingese and poodle, and the puppies romped in a pen while the humans gathered around to lean in and pet them.

A miniature poodle recently purchased at Petland Novi sold for $4,000, and Gage Liberati, a store manager, said some dogs there sell for as much as $6,000.

My taste in dogs runs more to the Heinz 57 variety — mixed-breed mutts in shelters or with rescue groups and desperate for permanent loving homes. For those of you intent on owning a purebred puppy, youll find plenty of responsible breeders operating within the law.

But when it comes to the retail sale of dogs and cats by businesses such as Petland, whose Frisco location was recently found to have several problems by the Humane Society of the United States, Im increasingly skeptical. Municipal ordinances with even the sharpest teeth seem unable to prevent potential harm to both pets and the people who buy them.

Frisco began reviewing its pet-sales regulations after the Humane Society waved a slew of red flags at the long-controversial Petland, the only animal store in the city and the site of occasional protests since it opened in 2003.

An undercover investigator with the advocacy organization found poor conditions in areas where dogs were housed. Some of the underweight, malnourished and sick dogs, often with bloody stools, did not receive veterinary care, according to the Sept. 12 report. When puppies were nursed back to health and sold, their owners werent told about their illnesses, the Humane Society said.

Petland disputed every single claim and called the investigation irresponsibly inaccurate and clearly uneducated.

We visit breeders weekly and also participate in corporate coordinated breeder trips, she wrote.

Furthermore It Is Always Wise To Go Through Reputable Breeders Or Rescue Shelters You Trust

The great news is that not all breeders cost an arm and a leg. If you really want to save some money but still find a healthy puppy, rescuing a dog is a wonderful option.

Of course, if you have your heart set on a puppy, you have a better chance of finding one through a breeder.

And while breeders usually do cost more than shelters, you still may be able to find some that are in your price range.

Golden Retriever Price What Makes The Difference

But what is the difference between a lower cost Golden Retriever puppy from a breeder and a higher cost Golden Retriever puppy?

The difference is show quality.

Typically, puppies bred for show are going to be more expensive than puppies bred primarily for companionship.

But dont worry, you wont be sacrificing your puppys health if you choose a companion puppy over a show quality puppy.

In fact, sometimes the difference between a $3,000 show quality pup and a $500 companion pup is as small as the color of the coat.

With that in mind, lets go over the overall cost of a Golden Retriever puppy!

What Are Goldendoodles And How Much Do They Cost

If youre interested in something a little different, then consider the amazing and adorable goldendoodle! These loveable doggies are an increasingly popular crossbreed between a golden retriever and a poodle. Its no wonder why people are going crazy over them goldendoodles are friendly, social, easy to train, and very healthy. But wait, it gets even better, because the majority of poodles are considered hypoallergenic, most goldendoodles have a low-to-non-shedding coat which minimizes allergic reactions.

Generally, you can find goldendoodles ranging from $1,000 to $2,400.

The goldendoodle price you can expect to pay will depend on the type of goldendoodle you choose to purchase. The F1 goldendoodle is going to be a less expensive option. This is due to the fact that they often look very similar to a golden retriever but with wavy hair and a moderate amount of shedding.

On the other hand, F1b goldendoodles usually come at a higher price because their hair sheds less and is more hypoallergenic.

Nowadays, with so many options to buy your new dog, theres a growing problem you need to be wary of: the rise of puppy mills.

Puppy mills are dark and depressing warehouses where dogs are grown without love, exercise, and health care. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals , heres a summary of what you can expect from these awful places:

Please dont support animal cruelty.

Here are some critical points to watch for:

Breeders Vs Pet Stores

Wyerman, a Novi resident, said although prices vary depending on popularity of breeds and number of pups in a litter, most people can purchase a purebred dog from a private seller for between $600 and $1,500. Besides offering lower prices, reputable breeders strive to maintain healthy bloodlines in dogs, he added.

There are three levels of dog breeders, said Wyerman. The first level are people who are very committed to the breeds, they know everything about that breed. They can look at a puppy and know what that dog is going to do. Its like trying to pick Miss America out of a baby, but they are conscious about breeding a healthy dog, they test the health of dogs before they breed them, they look for genetic markers.

The second level of breeders are ones that breed dogs based on what the dog looks like, or with personality and temperament in mind.

The third level, or the one Wyerman said people dont like to talk about, are the commercial breeders, who own large kennels and are in it for the money, some of whom sell to pet stores. A litter of six or seven puppies selling for $4,000 each equals more than some people make in an annual salary, he added.

Dogs end up in pet stores, and its a ready market, said Wyerman. What is cuter than an 8-week-old puppy? The downside is you pay a premium. And what goes along with that is you dont have a health history or know the temperament the parents had.

Its a trend that Wyerman doesnt particularly like.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy Food For A Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers are large breed dogs that require plenty of food and exercise.

Generally, basic dry golden retriever food can cost about $100 $250 per year for a 30-pound bag every 1 2 months. High quality dry food might go between $200 $400 per year for the same quantity and frequency.

Wet dog food will cost a bit more and range between $400 $1,000 per year for 1 3 cases of 13-ounce cans per month. The cost for food will depend on the size, age, and activity level of your companion.

When you buy dog food, always check the labels and make sure they meet the standards of the Association of American Feed Control Officials while they dont regulate, test, or certify pet foods in any way, they do establish the nutritional standards for complete and balanced pet foods. Fortunately, the cheaper brands of dog food can be just as good as the more premium brands as long as they meet the standards of AAFCO and are made with minimal processing. When making your decision, make sure to avoid artificial ingredients and preservatives where you can, since they could cause health problems for your dog.
