How often should Golden Retrievers be bathed? The maximum you can go without giving both should be no more than 45 days and that is to the extreme end. On the minimum waiting time, I always recommend it to be once every 15 days. In fact, if you bath your golden retriever in a gap of 2 weeks then you are doing great. Giving them a bath too often can be bad for their coat as there are some essential oils that give that glaze to their fur. Too frequent baths with shampoos followed with dry hot air blowers will cause a bad affect on these oils.

When Do You Need To Groom This Breed Of Dog
Golden Retrievers have beautiful golden fur that generally does not need constant brushing, but at least once every week would be good for the dogâs coat of fur. Of course, these dogs also need grooming for their nails, paws, and teeth every other week.
You do not necessarily need to bring your dog to the nearest grooming salon. Grooming dogs are actually quite fun and can be used as quality time with you and your pet companion!

Prepare Them For The Grooming
Preparing your golden retriever is really important and not just before the grooming but also before bath time, brushing their teeth, trimming their nails, or anything that requires tools such as scissors or clippers.
So, how can you prepare them for grooming their tail?;
First of all, you can exercise with them, play, or even take them for a walk, to make sure that they do not have any built-up energy and can stay still while grooming their tail.
The key is to have them calm and still but not too tired or exhausted that they just want to sleep and are annoyed by you trying to groom them.
If you also decide to groom them after a bath, you need to make sure they are completely dry before you groom them.
You can keep them around the tools to make them feel used to them before you actually use them.

Animals in the wild know how to clean themselves very well, and while this is somehow still true with dogs, they do need to take baths every now and then and Goldens are not an exception.

If you want to bathe your Golden regularly or your Golden pooch really needs to because he or she has rolled in something dirty again, make sure you use a mild dog shampoo, especially for dogs with skin conditions.
On average, if you give your Golden a bath once every 1 3 months is fine. Bathing is not a necessity. I know people who almost never give their Golden a bath or shower because the coat tens to clean naturally. When the coat dries, most of the dirt, sand, and mud will fall off. If you regularly let your Golden swim in clean water, the coat will remain beautiful and frequent washing is unnecessary.
If you dont have clean, natural water in your area, the high-velocity dryer, which I wrote about earlier, might also be a good option for you to blow dry the dirt and sand out of your Goldens coat.
If your Golden retriever needs a bath, I recommend giving him or her a shower instead of a bath. Because Goldens have a double coat, its almost impossible to get all the shampoo out of the coat unless you shower them. Bathing them in standing water is fine as long as you can rinse them off with a hand-held shower sprayer to rinse away all the shampoo.

Trim Your Golden Retrievers Coat
A Golden Retriever has undercoat and overcoat, which helps to keep the dog at a comfortable temperature. This combination traps cool air between the coats on a hot day and catches a warm breeze on a cold day. So, avoid trimming your goldens intact skin. With thinning shears, Trim the coat of golden Retriever from feet, leg, body, chest, neck, ears up to its tail. Do not trim the fur too short. Trim the length by tapering the coat from base to its tip.

Common Mistakes Dog Owners Make
There are some common mistakes dog owners make while or after bathing their dogs, so here are some of those so you can avoid them:
- Leaving them wet instead of drying them with a towel or a blowdryer as some dog owners think that when their dogs shake off all the water from their body the job is done and they dont need to do anything.
- Brushing them wrong is actually pretty common even though brushing them seems easy, some dog owners cannot notice that there are knots in their dogs fur and end up making their dog feeling uncomfortable and uneasy;
- Some dog owners also dont know is that they should brush their dogs before and after the bath not just after the bath besides brushing them at least 3 times a week;
- Brushing the wrong way is more common than it should be. Only brush your dogs hair in the direction it normally flows. Brushing in the opposite direction can be painful and leads to tangles and even hair loss.
- Do not try to brush them if their fur is tangled instead you should deal with the tangles or mats first

Golden Retriever Nail Clipping
If you are planning on trimming your pets claws, doing it in the tub is a great idea. Many dogs stand still better for this job when they are in the bathtub.
Choose a nail trimmer for larger claws, such as Millers Forge Nail Clipper. If you can see the quick, or the live area inside the nail that features a blood vessel, clip just above that, removing the tip of the nail.
If you cant see the quicksay, your dog has very dark or black nailsanother method is to look at the underside of the claw. Near where the claw begins to curve, towards the tip, the dead section on the underside will be hollow, like a canoe. This hollow area can be safely trimmed. If you trim too close, and a drop of blood appears, simply apply a styptic powder, such as Remedy+Recovery Styptic Powder, to the area to stop the bleeding.

Phil, its all about the liking and behavior of the dog. Whenever a retriever comes to us for bathing and grooming, we have an oral questionnaire for the dogs parent about how much the dog loves to get wet in water or mud. How frequently does he love to go out? What are his likes and dislikes with regard to him being groomed? For example, some dogs get triggered by the hot air from the blower.
The best way to find if its time for the retriever to be bathed is to look at his coats shine. If the shine is fading away then its a signal to reduce the frequency of baths because the loss of shine signals loss of oils in the skin and bathing is going to reduce the amount of oil in his skin. In such cases, you can use a grooming glove to remove the extra fur coat to keep the dog look good.

Cutting Your Goldens Toenails
Your Goldens toenails should not be left overgrown and should be regularly trimmed. But before you start trimming, I want to advise some caution. Not every dog will be thrilled about this, including our Corgi.
If you plan to do the nail-trimming, its important that you dont accidentally cut the skin. It can be very painful and will likely deter your dog from wanting to get its nails trimmed in the future.
Also, youll want to slowly introduce this grooming routine to your Golden Retriever:
A sharp pair of nail trimmers should be used to avoid unnecessary pressure on the nails. You will also need to consistently persuade your Golden to stay still so that you do not cut into the quick.
Trimming Your Golden Retrievers Coat
The entire coat of the golden retriever doesnt need to be trimmed. These breeds have two coats: an undercoat and an overcoat. The combination exists to keep the dog comfortable in any temperature and season. On hot days, cool air gets trapped between the coats, and on cold days, warm air gets trapped between the coats. Trimming the entire coat of the dog is a step in the wrong direction because it can inhibit the natural cooling and heating system of the golden retriever.
Some owners use clippers while trimming their golden retriever, but this is unneeded. All you need is a good pair of scissors and some thinning shears. Start by trimming the fur on the legs and feet of the dog. Youll need to trim the fuzzy hair growth at the edges cleanly with a scissor. Lift up the paw of the dog and trim the hair between the toes. You will need to comb or brush the hair between the toes before you trim it to allow you to trim it in the best way. The new length should be till the top of the dogs feet. You can now comb it back down so that it is at the level with the dogs pads.
The fur on the feet of your dog should be around ½ inches long. It should be able to lay smooth at the level of the foots surface. Once you are done, you should examine the pads of the dog as well. If you find any cracks in the pads, you can put Vaseline on them. Check to see if the nails of the pup need to be trimmed as well.
