Why Does My Golden Retriever Bite Me

How To Stop Your GOLDEN RETRIEVER BITING

If your Golden Retriever has been biting at you a lot, you might want to know why and what you can do about it.

This post will show you a number of reasons why it might be doing it and what you can do to get it to stop.

So, why does my Golden Retriever bite me? Possible causes are that it wasnt trained to as a puppy, its teething, you have inadvertently been encouraging the behavior, it wants attention or excitement.

There are a number of reasons why your Golden Retriever might be doing it and it could be due to a combination of reasons. However, there are a number of things you can consider when trying to figure out the exact reason and there are a number of things you can do about it.

Punish Them Subtly And Reward Them Tremendously When They Behave Well :

One of the few useful tactics is to treat your Golden Retriever well. Your dog may be biting due to certain issues like you being harsh and strict with them. Which is why it is important to be soft with them.

This is true for Golden Retriever pups as well as adult dogs. Present them with their favorite cookie or a swimming session if they behave well as per their regular standards.

The best treatment is to reward them when they do good instead of punishing their bad behavior. Keep your punishments less, low, and subtle and your rewards massive and frequent.

My Results From The Brain Training For Dogs Program

From taking the program and testing out some of the tips my dog over the course of a few weeks. I really started to notice a difference in her behavior. Not only that, but there was also a difference in me, and it was all for the better.

Because of that, it gave me the confidence to continue earning and trying new things that the program recommended, to the point where my pup started to stop all of the bad behavior and things once again became peaceful in the house.

After everything, I would definitely say that it was well worth the money I spent and to say the least. The best part was that I also got full access to the course trainer Adrienne Farricelli. She is always there whenever I need her and gave me real tips that I can use right on the spot.

Hello, biting is a common thing at this age. She may be bored – this breed of dog needs a lot of mental stimulation and exercise. You sound really invested in her happiness, so make sure that she gets a lot of walks. While on the walks, put training exercises in place to work the mind. This breed is classified in the sporting group, which means that they are at their happiest when learning and partaking in physical activities. Start with teaching her to Heel when on walks. The Turns Method is good: https://wagwalking.com/training/train-a-poodle-to-heel. Obedience training is a must and will also teach Whiskey to listen when you tell her no as she bites: https://wagwalking.com/training/obedience-train-a-great-dane. Practice and practice, and make sure that everyone in the family is helping out. Read through this guide for pointers and try the Leave It Method: https://wagwalking.com/training/train-an-australian-shepherd-puppy-not-bite. Good luck!

Hello Trinity,At her age what you are experiencing is completely normal and even healthy…even though we as people don’t enjoy being nibbled on, it is normal for puppies to bite each other in play to help them learn, so she has to be taught that people are different than puppies and you can’t bite them. This takes time to teach so try to remember that it’s normal while you are teaching her to be calmer.Check out the article linked below on puppy biting-called mouthing. Follow the Bite Inhibition method starting today, while also working on teaching her “Leave It” from the Leave it method. Once she is good at the Leave It command, then switch from the Bite Inhibition method to the Leave It method to teach her to stop biting completely. When she knows Leave It really well, tell her to Leave It whenever she tries to bite you.https://wagwalking.com/training/train-a-shih-tzu-puppy-to-not-biteFor the chewing, check out the article linked below:https://www.petful.com/behaviors/train-dog-not-to-chew/When she gets especially crazy, I suggest placing her in a crate or exercise pen with a food stuffed chew toy to chew on. Many puppies will get really wound up when they are tired and need some down time.Best of luck training,Caitlin Crittenden

You Must Also Have Your Puppy Examined By A Veterinarian

If you can’t know why do golden retrievers bite;;and this is accompanied by an alarming growling and aggression, then it will be best for you to contact a behaviorist who can better understand what is causing this dangerous display. You must also have your puppy examined by a veterinarian. The biting may be your puppys way of telling you that it does not feel well.

At the same time, educate your children on how to treat the puppy well. They must never startle any puppy or dog. A scared puppy will bite. They must not tease or hurt the puppy. Even the most loyal and tolerant puppy may retaliate if it cannot stand the abuse anymore.

Tips To Help Stop Your Puppy From Biting So Much

Since puppies bite to learn ABI, you dont want them to stop biting altogether at first.

You actually want them to bite a little bit and learn to control how hard they bite.

That being said, letting them go on a biting rampage is not helping the situation, so here are five tips to help you stop your puppy from biting so much:

1. Socialize your puppy

Other dogs are the best teachers of ABI so make sure to get your puppy in kindergarten and set up playdates with dogs that you know are vaccinated.

2. Give your puppy something to bite

If theyre incessantly biting your fingers, redirect their attention and give them something theyre allowed to bite, like a plush toy.

3. Let your puppy know that biting hurts

Some people will tell you to pretend like youre a puppy and cry out when your puppy is biting too much or too hard.

Your puppy knows youre not one of them, so need to pretend to be a puppy, but you can give a little yelp that sends the message, Dont do that, that hurts.

However, this could backfire

Which leads us to tip #4.

4. Remove yourself from the situation

Puppies can often be over-stimulated or over-tired.

Its these times when theyll have the zoomies or go on a biting spree that makes you think you accidentally adopted a great white shark.

If your puppy is in this mood theres no controlling them and its best to remove yourself from the situation.

5. Exercise your puppy

A tired puppy is a good puppy.

At What Age Do Golden Retriever Puppies Start Biting

Training Questions And Answers

BITES CONSTANTLY, I KNOW HE IS JUST PLAYING BUT HE BITES AND TUGS AT MY CHILDRENS HAIR AND CLOTHES AND IT UPSETS THEM, THEY ARE 5 AND 7

Hello Kellie,For the biting, I recommend teaching pup the Leave It command.Leave It method:https://wagwalking.com/training/train-a-shih-tzu-puppy-to-not-biteI also recommend teaching pup Out – which means leave the area, and using the section on how to use out to deal with pushy behavior, and you enforce Out on behalf of the kids after they tell puppy Out, if pup doesn’t obey them. This helps pup learn respect for them as an extension of pup respecting you, and takes the pressure off the kids.https://www.petful.com/behaviors/how-to-teach-a-dog-the-out-command/When pup is overtired, pup will also bite more, so I would crate train pup and place pup in a crate or exercise pen with a dog food stuffed chew toy, like a kong, for a rest time when pup is especially rambunctious.Best of luck training,Caitlin Crittenden

Exercise Your Pups Mind And Body

Puppy biting and nipping can sometimes occur when your puppy is bored. A great way to solve boredom is by going for a walk with your puppy. Not only will your pup get exercise, but being outdoors will allow your pup to experience the sights and sounds and different smells, which will also stimulate your puppys mind.

Be sure to let your puppy sniff and explore, but be careful because Golden Retriever puppies are notorious for trying to eat everything that they shouldnt.

How much exercise should you give your Golden Retriever puppy? A good rule of thumb is 5 minutes of exercise for every month that your puppy is alive. So a 3-month-old puppy should get 15 minutes of exercise a day, a 5-month-old puppy should get 25 minutes per day, and so on. This is in addition to and not instead of playtime.
