How Much To Feed A Golden Retriever Puppy

Golden Retriever puppies should eat three to four times a day until they are six months old at scheduled intervals. They require more calories and frequency at this young age. It is not best to feed them extra food as they could become overweight. They should be lanky with long legs at this stage in life.

How Much Should You Feed Your Golden Retriever Puppy

How much you feed your puppy depends on what your veterinarian says and what the label on the dog food says.

Its tough to make general statements like, feed your puppy one cup per day, because 1) all puppies are different, and 2) different foods have different caloric densities.

One cup of Brand X food may have 300 calories per cup, while Brand Y has 400 calories per cup.

And heres an example of why it depends on the individual puppy

When we first got our puppy, Oliver, we were feeding him what the package told us to feed him.

During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age , and he recommended we feed him a little more.

So when deciding how much to feed your puppy, read the label on your food and talk to your veterinarian to see whats best for them.

As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies.

Most people feed their puppies three times per day, and then eventually transition to two times per day when theyre a little older.

At this point, theyre not growing as much, so they dont need to eat as frequently, plus it will usually help them poop less!

For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old.

Thats when we switched to adult dog food and changed to feeding him two times per day.

Should I Feed My Golden Retriever Table Food

Royal Canin Dry Dog food

Feeding your Golden Retriever table food is not the best practice but a small amount of dog healthy table food is fine. Some example table foods that are healthy for them are carrots, blueberries and plain yogurt.

Just be aware that feeding them too much table food can throw their entire diet out of whack. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. You will need to reduce the amount of dog food they get and table food should never be more than 10% of their diet.

Do Golden Retrievers Need Grain In Their Diets

Many Golden Retrievers can benefit from grain in their diets because it is an excellent nutrient. Grains are carbohydrates that give energy, plus they are full of other nutrients like antioxidants and fats . However, not all dogs can tolerate wheat or grain in their diets. Many dogs have allergies to grains, so they need grain-free diets. However, they can still benefit from other carbs like veggies to get their carbs.

What Can You Expect From The Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy Food

For starters, the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy Food comes in a beautiful carton box that is stiff and noncollapsible. Usually, it comes with a weight of 30 pounds, a quantity that proves ideal for puppies since you can use it for a long time. With amount of puppy food, you will not need to purchase another box for 2 months or more. However, this period is dependent on the number of puppies you have. This food is formulated for puppies of all ages, from 8 weeks when they can eat solid food to when they are 15 months old.

The packaging is clearly labelled, indicating the rations that are ideal for puppies of different ages. One of the most unique features of this packaging is the fact that it locks moisture out, keeping the food fresh and safe before opening and within the duration of use. This way, you can be guaranteed that your puppy will consume food that is safe with low risk of moulding.

Perhaps what is most important about the food is the ingredients used. Notably, the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy Food is incredibly well constituted to provide more than a balanced diet. That said, it is a commendable thing that the packaging keeps the food in stellar condition throughout since highly nutritious foods are prone to quick degradation by micro-organisms.

How Much To Feed A Golden Retriever Adult

Royal Canin Golden Retriever Adult

Golden Retriever adults should eat around twice a day. What is more important is the portion size of those meals. The portion size will vary depending on age, weight, activity level, and health conditions of your Golden Retriever. After being spayed or neutered, your Golden Retriever may not need as many calories so consulting with your veterinarian would be a good idea.

Golden Retrievers reach their full height and weight between 12 and 18 months old. They will usually weigh between 55 and 75 pounds. When your Golden reaches adulthood, their caloric intake should decrease.

During adulthood, they should be eating two scheduled meals a day. If they do get hungry between meals, give them a good, healthy snack that will tide them over until the next meal. Check out our article Best Dog Treats for Golden Retrievers for some healthy treat ideas.

Royal Canin Golden Retriever Dog Food Recalls

Royal Canin Breed Health Nutrition Golden Retriever Adult Dry Dog Food ...

In a few instances, Royal Canin dog food has been recalled a few times. However, this particular food has never been recalled.

Many of their foods were recalled in 2007 in connection with the large melamine recall. A rice supplier was putting melamine into their rice, which is quite toxic. However, it also helps prevent molding, which is why they put it into the food. Several dogs became sick, which prompted an investigation.

Many dog food companies used this supplier, so Royal Canin was not the only food that was recalled.

In 2006, Royal Canin also had to recall a few canned foods that were exclusive to veterinary clinics. These foods contained too much vitamin D3 due to a mess up with the supplier of the vitamin mix.

However, they were very quick to recall the affected foods, which is always a good sign that they take responsibility.

What About Feeding Your Golden Retriever A Raw Diet Or Homemade Food

You probably noticed that a raw diet was the fourth-most popular diet Golden Retriever owners feed their dog.

Heres what Dr. Lisa Freeman, from the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association study, had to say about it:

We also emphasize that changing to a raw or home-prepared diet may not be sufficient to improve cardiac abnormalities and may increase the risk for other nutritional deficiencies or infectious diseases.

What To Look For

The reason I always recommend commercial dog food over homemade is that the former is carefully prepared to fulfill the dietary needs per meal. And it is all right there on the label. From the amount of proteins and fat to the total caloric content per cup.

Here is what you should look for on the label.

  • Lean Meat The best food for Golden Retriever is one that has meat as its first ingredient, and that meat should be lean. Poultry is preferable over red meat because it has the right amount of fat as well.
  • Low Fat Keep in mind that large breeds have a slower metabolism, which means they are more susceptible to weight gain. I would say go for anything that has around 10 to 15% fat. However, you should focus on fiber as well because it can help with fat metabolism.
  • Good Carbs No active breed can thrive without carbs. Look for quality vegetable sources such as potatoes or other tubers. These sources are also rich in minerals and vitamins essential for healthy bones and teeth.
  • Fatty Acids Goldies are quite furry, which means you should look for fur-friendly ingredients as well. Fatty acids from fish can do wonders for the skin and coat of your baby.
  • Fillers and Additives: Go for a filler-free food that doesnt contain artificial flavors or additives. This should also be your criteria for snacks and treats.

How Should You Go About Feeding Your Puppy

Even though this food is made for puppies, the quantity of food dispensed is dependent on the puppyâs growth stage and health needs.

Before getting about feeding the little canine, ensure that you are certain of its age and that it is in the right state of health. You may have to increase or decrease the recommended rations depending on an array of health factors such as obesity and anemia among others. The below table gives a detailed breakdown on how to feed your puppy.

Royal Canin Golden Retriever Dog Food Ingredients

Royal Canin

Because this food is designed specifically for Golden Retrievers, it is a little bit different than other foods. Firstly, Golden Retrievers often have a hard time maintaining a healthy weight. Therefore, this food feature ingredients that are low in fat.

However, it does have a decent amount of protein at 23%, thanks to the chicken by-product meal that is the second ingredient.

The first ingredient is brown rice, which is high in fiber and carbohydrates. Brown rice is a great option for many Golden Retrievers, as it is high in fiber and carbohydrates. Fiber helps dogs stay full so that they can maintain a healthy weight.

Oat groats, brewers rice, and wheat all add to the overall fiber of the food, which helps keep your Golden Retriever fuller.

However, we do not recommend this food for extremally active dogs, as they will likely need more calories and fat. But for your average Golden Retriever, this option is quite good.

Sample buyer reviewI have four furry children from small to extra large, all picky in their own way : Treats, bones, & obviously food. All four of em absolutely loved this brand! Theyve been on it for only a week, & I can already tell how healthier their coats look, & a bit of needed weight loss.

Is The Raw Diet Good For My Golden Retriever

According to The American Veterinary Medical Association, feeding the raw diet to Golden Retrievers is not recommended. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens.

However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help.

Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods.
