Golden Retrievers were developed starting in 1850 by the Scotsman Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks, the Lord of Tweedmouth. Hunting birds was popular at the time, both as sport and as a practical way of obtaining food. Marjoribanks sought a medium-sized bird dog to support the hunt. The breed was developed by crossing a Retriever with a Water Spaniel, then crossing their offspring with Bloodhounds, Irish Setters, the St. John’s Water Dog, and other Retrievers. Golden Retrievers were first shown in 1908, at the U.K.’s Crystal Palace. They were entered as “flat coats ” rather than the name we know them by today.

It took until 1925 for the breed to win official American Kennel Club recognition. Today, Golden Retrievers are still used for hunting and field trials, and they also perform obedience and guide dog work.

You Shouldnt Pay More For The English Cream Golden Retriever Because Of Color

Labrador Retriever vs Golden Retriever

If you’ve purchased a Golden Retriever, then you know they can be expensive, especially if you buy one from a reputable breeder and they have their American Kennel Club papers. Unfortunately, there are some breeders who charge more for the English Cream Golden Retriever because “they are more rare” than their American counterparts. Truth be told, while you are likely to see more American Goldens than English Creams in dog parks around the country, that is not a good reason for them to cost more. More important than color is a Golden’s bloodline. If you plan to add one to your family, ask the breeder to see the parents and, if possible, to see their paperwork.

Jake, an English Cream Golden Retriever, was purchased from a reputable local breeder who had parents on the premises and whose paperwork reflected his AKC breeding history

English Cream Golden Retriever Aka Platinum Retriever Aka White Retriever

The English cream golden retriever is known by several different names in the U.S. Besides English Cream Golden Retriever, this breed also goes by Platinum Retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, and also simply White Retriever or White Golden Retriever.

Although there is just one golden retriever breed, there are slight differences, except for the coat color, between the English and American retriever types. However, the pale platinum coat is the trait that made English creams sought-after and popular.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Shed More Than American Golden Retrievers

As someone who has owned both the American Golden Retriever and the English Cream Golden Retriever, I can tell you that is the case. Any long-haired dog is going to shed. In my experience, my English Cream Gold Retriever sheds worse than my American Golden Retriever. No matter how often I vacuum, there are always white tumbleweeds of fur in my home. My advice is to brush, brush, brush! I generally brush my boys Koda and Jake a few times each week, and even more during the spring and summer when their coats are in full-shed mode.

Most long-hair dogs shed. Regular brushing is important to keep the fur of the English Cream to a minimum.

Two Presidents Enjoyed Golden Retrievers As Pets While In The White House

Both President Ford and President Reagan enjoyed Golden Retrievers while in office. President Reagan’s Golden Retriever, Victory, was one of six dogs the president owned. President Reagan also enjoyed a stable full of horses at his ranch.

President Ford had a Siamese cat and a mixed-breed dog in addition to Liberty the Golden Retriever and Liberty’s puppy, Misty.

Goldens are also popular as celebrity pets. Celebs who own Golden Retrievers include Miranda Lambert, Jimmy Fallon, Emma Stone, Adam Levine, and Oprah.

Golden Retrievers Are So Popular In Movies Due To Their Obedient Nature

English Cream Golden Retriever Vs. American

Golden Retrievers are often featured in movies and television shows, including Air Bud and Homeward Bound. While the breed is certainly cute, it’s not their beauty that gets Goldens so many television spots. It’s their mellow nature, combined with their trainability.

Golden Retrievers are easy to train, and they perform reliably and consistently. That’s what makes them such popular guide dogs, and it’s also what led the breed to take first in AKC obedience trials when they were introduced in 1977.

Are American Golden Retrievers Genetically Different From English Ones

Somewhat. Even though American goldens descend from English lines imported to the U.S. via Canada, the breed evolved and developed differently than its English counterpart because it was bred according to the American Kennel Club standard rather than the standard of the Kennel Club of the UK. Let’s take a look at a few of the differences.

What Similarities Do English Retrievers And Golden Retrievers Share

All Golden Retrievers regardless of what type they are English, Canadian or American share similar qualities and attributes that this breed is known for.

Here is what all Golden Retrievers have in common:

Intelligence

This breed is very smart, in fact, they are ranked the 4th smartest breed for obedience-command trainability, according to Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs.

Eager To Please and Easy To Train

Golden Retrievers love to please their humans, and will often do anything for a treat or affection/attention. This makes them easy to train.

Loyal and Loving

Golden Retrievers love human contact and they love spending time with their favourite humans. They are known for walking up to complete strangers and saying hello and of course wanting to be petted.

This breed is not shy! But, just because they will pretty much go over to any human for attention, they are very loyal and will sit by their human to protect them.

Great Family Dogs

Either type of Golden Retriever would make an excellent addition to your family. They get along well with children and other animals.

They Love The Water

They are natural-born swimmers. With their water-repellent coats and their webbed paws, this breed was born to swim. It is rare to find a Golden Retriever that doesn’t like the water!

They Shed

Trust me, I own a Canadian Golden Retriever, and she sheds! Any owner of this breed will tell you that shedding is heavy during the spring and fall, but shedding happens daily!

Differences Between An American Golden And English Golden Retriever

There are few differences between an American Golden Retriever and an English Golden Retriever. The reason these differences are seen is because of the way the Golden Retrievers are bred. Several different dog breeds were introduced by Scottish breeders into the mix to develop a Golden Retriever that we love today. The color difference likely comes because of the diverse genetic background of this breed.

American Golden Retrievers have lustrous, rich golden of various shades in their colors. On the other hand, an English Golden Retriever has cream like shades in their colors.

In addition to color, there are some minor differences in the physical structure of these dogs. The head structure of an American Golden Retriever is arched and broad-skulled with no focus on either the forehead or the occipital bones while the arch stretches laterally. The eyes of an American Golden Retriever are dark and medium- or large-sized. The front edge of short ears of these dogs falls right above the eyes, covering them when pulled forward. The neck of an American Golden Retriever is medium long and merges into the shoulders giving a muscular look.

Different Types Of Golden Retrievers And How To Recognize Them

May 11, 2020 By Meg AustwickLeave a Comment

Golden Retrievers are a popular breed that is loved in America and across the world. But, many people don’t realise that there are 3 different types of Golden Retrievers within the breed as a whole!

The 3 most well known types of Golden Retrievers are the American type, the Canadian type, and the English type.

There are some slight differences in appearance that can help you tell the 3 types apart. But they will all have the loving, friendly, playful temperament that the breed is known for.

So let’s find out more about the different types of Golden Retrievers.

English Cream Golden Retriever Breed Guide 11 Things To Know Susan R. Miller

I have always owned Golden Retrievers, the “American” kind. They have ranged in color from light gold to a deep reddish brown. It wasn’t until a few years ago that I stumbled upon the English Cream Golden Retriever.

I was intrigued by the look of the English Cream Golden Retriever and wondered how different they were from their American cousins that I had grown to love. Five years ago, Koda came into my life, two years later, we welcomed home his brother Jake.

Like the American Golden, English Golden Retrievers are intelligent, loyal and eager to please. In fact, as you will learn they have more similarities than differences.

Difference Between Labrador And Golden Retriever Temperament

    English Cream Golden Retriever

The words commonly used to describe the temperaments of both Goldens and Labs are the words we use to describe very good dogs! Both breeds are friendly, reliable, affectionate, gentle, trusting, and kind. But many potential owners wonder about the differences between Lab and Golden Retriever personalities.

Before talking about temperament, it’s always a good idea to remind new dog owners that all dogs are individuals, and breed alone does not guarantee any specific personality traits or behaviors. Meeting the parents, good training and socialization practices from puppyhood into adulthood are the best ways to ensure that you get the kind of dog you want.

Labs and Goldens are both very trainable and obedient, which is good news for novice owners. Canine behavior experts explain the minor temperament differences between Goldens and Labs in terms of degrees. Generally, Goldens are said to be a bit softer, gentler, and more sensitive than Labs.

While both do well in families with children, Labs tend to have the advantage in adapting to households with boisterous, lively, and loud young children. Many Goldens prefer a slightly more calm and tranquil home environment.

It’s always important to take your lifestyle into account when choosing a dog…both the breed and the individual animal. An active family with young children may prefer an energetic Lab, while a retired couple may welcome a gentle Golden instead.

Personality: Are English Cream Golden Retrievers More Mellow

Yes. Typically, English Cream Retrievers are calmer than their American counterparts, but that doesn’t mean they have lower activity levels, especially as a young pup. But overall, they’re easier to train.

In general, Golden Retrievers are known for having that puppy-like trait throughout their life, but English Cream Goldens are said to mature faster, especially when a lot of time and attention is placed into training and socialization.

That doesn’t mean they need less attention and love. No matter what type of Goldie it is, they’ll always look for affection, like when it comes to scary things, like escalators:

All Golden Retrievers are kind, loving, and great with children. They’re extremely affectionate and gentle. For these reasons, they’re known to be great therapy and service dogs.

These social pupper-flies are great with other dogs and cats – even if introduced later in life. They are a very patient breed and tend to get along with all people and pets.

Unfortunately, their social nature makes them susceptible to social anxiety. They’d rather always have someone with which to engage.

Like what we mentioned earlier, English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly trainable. They’re intelligent, loyal, and are eager to please their owners.

You’ll be able to quickly teach your pup commands like Sit, Stay, and Come. With positive reinforcement and a few treats, almost nothing is impossible with this breed.

Labrador Retriever Vs Golden Retriever Which Did You Choose

We hope you have enjoyed reading through this comprehensive side-by-side comparison of Labrador Retriever vs Golden Retriever dog breed similarities and differences!

Remember, there is no “right” or “wrong” choice – only the right choice for you!

Golden Retriever owners will have to consider the risks of cancer, the potential health problems of early neutering or neutering at all, and that additional coat care.

Labrador Retriever owners will need to think about that increased bounciness and pushiness with strangers, and the possibility of separation anxiety or chewing problems.

There is no easy answer to the Labrador Retriever vs Golden Retriever debate.

But what you can be confident in is, as long as you choose your pup carefully, train and socialize them well, either dog is a great bet for a family pet.

When you do decide, we would love to hear your story of which breed you chose and how you and your new canine bestie met one another and knew you had found “the one!”

English Cream Golden Retrievers Were First Bred In Scotland

First seen in Scotland, the English Cream Golden Retriever was bred somewhere between 1854 and 1894.

Around 1868, Baron Tweedmouth of Guisachan bred together his two rare dogs, Wavy Coated Retriever x Tweed Water Spaniel .

The four puppies were used as gundogs and favored for their “soft mouth” grip.

Their skill of retrieval was unrivaled as they could retrieve both in water and on land.

Over time this breed made its way over to America, the first records show the Golden Retreiver popping up in America in around 1910.

Shortly afterwards, in November 1925 the first Retriever was registered with the American Kennel Club being named the American Golden Retriever.

Here are the differences between them:

    1. Colour

Field Golden Retrievers Vs Show Golden Retrievers Overview

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the differences between these two styles of goldens, let’s make a few things clear…

First, these are both golden retrievers, they’re just different styles of the same breed.

And because they’re the same breed, they’re more similar than they are different.

However, they are bred for different purposes, and those purposes influence all of the factors that we’ll discuss here.

Second, let’s clear up some terms.

The term “field bred” and “field” mean the same thing, and the terms “conformation” and “show” also mean the same thing.

And finally, these differences are generalities, not hard set rules.

Every dog is an individual and can be on any end of the spectrum for the factors we’re talking about here.

Now let’s talk about the differences between these two styles…

English Vs American Golden Retriever: Whats The Difference

Golden Vs. Labrador – Differences Between Labrador ...

The Golden Retriever is a loveable, familial breed that can win the heart of nearly every person they encounter. Even though they may not have accents to tell them apart, there are still ways to differentiate between the English and the American Golden Retriever.

Between England and the United States, different characteristics have developed over the years. While the AKC and BKC don’t recognize this breed as two separate entities, let’s discuss what sets these two across-the-seas siblings apart — besides distance.

Disposition: What Makes The English Cream Golden Stand Out

English Cream Golden Retrievers have a robust, solid build and broadheads. They’re also known for their dark, round, puppy-like eyes.

Their glossy coat is cream-colored, but even the whitest shade would still have gold highlights through their fur. They’re not actually white, so it’s more appropriate to use the term “cream.”

But did you know that cream was only added to the English standard in 1936? Even with selective breeding, it took years before they got called “English Cream Golden Retrievers.”

Overall, Golden Retriever colors come in different shades of gold – from light to dark.

English Cream Golden Retrievers Should Run For 1 Hour/day

Like other types of Retriever, the English Cream Golden Retriever is at his happiest outdoors.

Nothing brings this breed more joy than a game of fetch with their favorite human- except maybe a cuddle at home afterward.

True to their heritage, these guys love to swim and are true waterdogs.

Consequently, owners should try to take these dogs to places where it is safe for them to swim.

On average, this breed needs around two walks each day, 30 minutes each in length. Try to keep these walks varied to keep their interest and prevent them from getting bored.

Although very good natured, like any other breed, they will grow bored if their exercise needs are not met .

Do You Know All The Different Types Of Golden Retrievers

You might have noticed that not all Goldens look alike. Some are fair, others dark. Some are lanky with minimal feathering, while some look like teddy bears.

Golden Retrievers Are From Scotland Vs Labs From Canada

Golden Retrievers were bred from wavy coated Retrievers and Tweed Water Spaniels. Labradors were selectively bred from St. Johns Water Dogs.

The Golden Retriever originated in Glen Affric, Scotland in the 1800s. Lord Tweedmouth mated a wavy coated Retriever with a Tweed Water Spaniel.

The Labrador Retriever originated 4,000 miles away from Scotland in Newfoundland, Canada.

Canadians selectively bred the Newfoundland breed with smaller water dogs to create a St. Johns Water Dogs. The St. Johns Water Dog was then imported to England and used as retrievers in shooting sports. After arriving in England the breed officially became known as a Labrador Retriever.

Goldens were officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1925, 8 years after the Labrador was officially recognized in 1917.

They Are Actually Called Rare White European Retrievers

Recently, the term English Cream Golden Retriever , but what dog breed are they?

Sometimes referred to as Rare White European Retrievers or Exquisite Platinum Imported Golden Retrievers, these canines are often claimed to be healthier than standard Golden Retrievers.

    However, this is untrue.

An English Cream Golden Retriever is a Golden Retriever that is paler in coat color and English in origin.

They are not pure white, but instead a pale yellow to cream.
