Do Kennel Clubs Recognize The Canadian Golden Retrievers

Golden Retriever rescued from China find forever homes in South Florida

Major kennel clubs such as the American Kennel Club , Canadian Kennel Club , and United Kennel Club only recognize the Golden Retriever as the official breed in their standards.

If you look at the written standards, you will not see the breed name Canadian Golden Retriever nor any other variety of the breed.

However, this is not to say that the Canadian and other Golden Retriever types cannot be registered or are not legitimate Golden Retrievers.

It just means that major kennel clubs consider all of the varieties of the Golden Retriever as one single breed.

Hence, you can have your Canadian Golden Retriever participate in conformation and sporting events organized by any of the mentioned kennel clubs.

One thing to note, though, is that some kennel clubs and judges favor Golden Retrievers which are considered more desirable in certain regions or countries.

There are also few points in each kennel club standard that are slightly different from what other kennel clubs state.

Say, for example, CKC allows a coat color in any of the lustrous shades of gold. It does not restrict a light or dark color. The AKC, on the other hand, considers extremely pale and extremely dark shades as undesirables.

As for Canadian Golden Retrievers, they are more favored in CKC sponsored events because they are bred and raised following the standards set by the CKC itself.

Mini Golden Retriever Dog Info

While their name may imply just a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, this Miniature is a hybrid breed that brings together a Golden Retriever and a Miniature Poodle. Unlike full Goldendoodles, a crossbreed between Poodles and Golden Retrievers, these Minis are bred to be as close to the Golden Retriever as possible. This means they have a more similar coat, appearance, and temperament to the Golden Retriever than a Poodle. Their size is significantly smaller than Standard Golden Retrievers.

Often, these dogs reach a weight between 20 to 45 pounds and a height of 14 to 20 inches when measured at the shoulders. Its exact size is very dependent on their genetic make-up and the size of the parents. As they are a mixed breed, they may also come with fewer health concerns, especially when the breeders are committed to preserving the breeds health. The temperament of the Miniature Golden Retriever is often very similar to that of the Standard. They are very friendly, loyal, and caring toward their families, other dogs, and strangers.

Ask About Socialization & Training

Puppies do best with their mothers for the first several weeks. In addition to the nourishment puppies receive from their mothers milk, the puppies also receive important socialization and training by staying with their litter for the first nine weeks. A reputable breeder will work with you to provide opportunities for you to meet the puppy during those weeks.

How To Find Reputable Golden Retriever Breeders

It is essential to get your dog from a reputable breeder and avoid puppy mills and greedy backyard breeders at all costs. Although very low prices should always be a huge red flag, even the most expensive puppies could come from bad sellers, and price only is not a sign of quality. Breeders registered with a kennel club tend to be more serious, but again, it is not enough to decide whether a breeder is trustworthy or not. Along the same lines, an unregistered breeder could be excellent.

Here are the characteristics of good breeders:

Small scale operations

  • Usually only sell one or two breeds, dont have puppies available all the time, and have experience.
  • Raise puppies in their home since birth and show love toward their dogs.
  • Make sure puppies are handled by different people to be comfortable with humans.
  • Knowledgeable about the breed , answer your questions.

Transparency

  • Encourage you to meet them, visit their kennel , and see the breeding dogs and puppies . Good breeders tend to only sell puppies to people they have met in person.
  • Willing to share information about their breeding process. Good breeders dont start breeding dogs under 18 months old and usually stop after 3 to 6 litters.
  • Will ask you to pick up the puppy at the kennel or at least to bring it to you themselves .
  • Will make sure you will be a good fit for their dog and will most likely make you sign a contract spelling out your responsibilities .

Do Canadian Golden Retrievers Differ Greatly From English And American Golden Retrievers

Most of the differences between the Canadian and its American and English Golden Retrievers siblings lie in their appearances.

They only have slight differences which is why it is hard for people with untrained eyes to distinguish them.

The distinct physical trait that primarily distinguishes a Canadian Golden Retriever is its thinner and shorter coat compared to the long and dense coats of American and English Golden Retrievers.

They also have fewer feathering on their neck, back of their forelegs, and tail. The fur of Canadian Golden Retrievers also lays flat on their skin unlike the fluffy coat of the other variants. Their tail is curved just like the American Goldens.

Canadian Golden Retrievers can also exhibit any of the shades of gold regardless of whether it is a dark or light shade.

This distinguishes them from American Goldens whose standard considers extremely pale and extremely dark pigmentations undesirable.

In terms of height, the Canadian Golden Retriever can grow a few inches taller compared to the other two varieties, although it grows slightly less heavy compared to English Golden Retrievers.

On the other hand, factors such as temperament, behavior, trainability, and health are similar across all of the Golden Retriever varieties.

Thus, we can say that the Canadian Golden Retrievers do not differ greatly from English and American Goldens.

You can take a look at these photos to clearly see how the three Golden Retrievers look and differ from each other.

The History Of Golden Retrievers

The Golden is one of the breeds created during the dog-loving Victorian era. The breeds in his background probably included a yellow retriever, the Tweed Water Spaniel, wavy- and flag-coated retrievers and a red setter. Dudley Marjoribanks, Lord Tweedmouth, is generally credited with producing the first dogs that were to become known as Golden Retrievers, but recent research into studbooks, old paintings and other sources suggests that dogs similar to the Golden Retriever, possibly a type of setter, existed before Lord Tweedmouth began breeding them at his Scottish estate, Guisachan. Englands Kennel Club classified the dogs as Retriever Yellow or Golden in 1911, then changed the name to Retriever Golden in 1920.

Golden Retrievers were first registered with the American Kennel Club in 1925 and were officially recognized as a breed in 1932. Since then they have established themselves as versatile companions, hunting dogs and working dogs. Goldens are found doing search and rescue, animal-assisted therapy, arson detection, drug detection and assistance work for people with disabilities. Their energy, enthusiasm and intelligence make them well suited to learning and performing almost any task.

Today, Goldens are among the most beloved of breeds and rank fifth among the breeds registered by the AKC.

Reasons To Choose A Reputable Breeder

Wes

I touched on this in the intro, but here are five reasons to choose a reputable breeder:

  • Health is inherited. If you have two healthy parents , the puppies are likely to be healthy as well.
  • Temperament is inherited. Everything that was said about health also goes for temperament.
  • Inbreeding is a major problem with golden retrievers where dogs that are too closely related can produce unhealthy puppies. Responsible breeders will know and take steps to prevent this.
  • Socialization is important to raising healthy puppies and its the breeders job to socialize them at first.
  • If anything were to go wrong, you would want a breeder with integrity to help navigate the problems, whether that ends up in a refund, a replacement puppy, etc.

Golden Retriever 13 Who Can Barely Walk Has The Time Of Her Life In Giant Leaf Pile

Beautiful dog Darcy has arthritis, but that doesnt stop the happy golden retriever from living life to the full with her puppy-like spirit in this enormous pile of leaves

Theres nothing that quite brings out an inner child – or puppy – like a big pile of leaves, and golden retriever Darcy proves that shes still young at heart in this adorable clip.

Only the tip of 13-year-old Darcys wagging tail can be seen at first, as the goldie rustles around in the huge mound of leaves in search of her tennis ball.

Moments later she pops her head out of the pile with the ball in her mouth, looking very pleased with herself as her owners give her a celebratory cheer.

Darcys owner Ali Cohen, from Surrey, says that leaf piles and her tennis ball are two of the dogs greatest loves in life, and getting older certainly hasnt deterred Darcy from her fun games.

Despite having cataracts, Ali says that Darcy hasnt lost her fetching skills – and would play catch all day given half a chance.

Darcy, affectionately nicknamed Lady D, has also had arthritis since she was four years old, and Ali was told two years ago by a vet that there was no way she should still be walking.

She now has a pull-along trolley that she travels to her favourite park in to make the journey easier for her tired legs.

The video of Darcy was posted in a golden retriever group on , where members dubbed it the cutest video ever and said it had made their day.

Can Breeding Miniature Goldens Be Bad For The Dogs Themselves

There will always be questions raised over the ethics of selectively breeding dogs to fit certain characteristics that suit us as humans rather than those characteristics that are necessary for the breed.

However, breeders have undertaken much research and study in order to create Miniature Golden Retrievers that are not only suitable for people wanting smaller dogs, but that provide benefits to the dogs themselves.

Smaller sized dogs are not only easier to care for, theyre also likely to live longer, as demonstrated by the increased lifespan for Miniature Goldens over the breed standard.

Many dogs will also shed less hair and should avoid the inherited diseases that can afflict Golden Retrievers.

So Where Is The Best Place To Get A Golden Retriever Puppy

Community steps up to help find Nala the lost golden retriever puppy.

There are many places and options available to get a Golden Retriever puppy, some good, some bad, and puppy mills and pet stores just an appalling option to be avoided.

In both cases there will be a vetting process and youll only be given a puppy or dog if you and they are well suited.

But there are other options available and I hope this article has given you some information to help you in your decision.

Please let us know about your experiences of getting a GR from any of the sources above, or even one I may have forgotten. Wed love to hear your story. Thank you.
